Tilted Square on White, 2017, oil on linen 31 x 31cm
DANICA FIRULOVIC Restrained and reserved, Danica Firulovic’s all-white paintings in square formats have been guided by an interest in reductive, non-objective art and the emotion evoked by the predominance of white. Close inspection of the works reveal evidence of the artist’s hand, in the smooth brush strokes and the lines meticulously drawn with pencil. The outer edge of the support, often left bare and unpainted, exposing the linen, is of equal importance as it frames the white-on-white geometric composition. The reduced palette creates insistent neutrality and connects with the unadulterated geometric shapes, which vary in tonal application and require absorption and slow engagement as the subtleness of white serves as a meditative distraction.

NANCY CONSTANDELIA Nancy Constandelia is interested in the act of painting as a way to enhance and recalibrate the phenomenal body, in order to slow down within this fast-paced world. Her painting practice acts as resistance against the culture of speedin contemporary life. Constandelia creates reductive and minimal compositions which allow the viewer to enter a non-linguistic space beyond our everyday senses. On a temporal level, the viewer becomes the subject of the work as these paintings offer slow release. Her works invite stillness and rumination. Constandelia is an Australian born Chinese artist with an MFA from the University of NSW, Sydney. She exhibits in Australia and internationally. Constandelia has been a finalist in various art prizes including the Blake, Waverley and the Kudos Emerging Art Prize. In 2016 she won the UNSW Art & Design Industry Painting Prize.

ROSE CHRISTINE TRIPODI Rose Christine Tripodi explores the material, transformative and therapeutic possibilities of artmaking. With a contemplative and process-driven approach she has hand-stitched and reshaped pieces of pre-loved linen into a sculpture resembling a protective cocoon. Having worked on these pieces in varied locations, the hand-stitched marks materially record the varied quality of emotions the artist experiences in direct response to these diverse settings. Tripodi relates the needlework processes of alteration, restoration and stitching to a sense of atonement, whereby the handstitched marks autobiographically reflect the process of transformation the artist herself has undergone in constructing the cocoon. Tripodi is invested in the pre-existing history of the old fabrics as carriers of knowledge and their potential to convey a story of fragility, self-growth and renewal. For Tripodi, her engagement with these stories through artmaking, is a catalyst for transformation.
