Emotive House Degree Project: 2015 Woodbury University Instructor Berenika Boberska Stephen Marshall The development and ubiquity of Tract housing in America has allowed houses to be built quickly and cheaply. However, in creating endless enclaves of identical houses these houses have become constrictive and unresponsive to both the pervasive demands of contemporary life and the forces of the external
environment. This thesis contemplates an alternative form of housing that takes emotion, responsiveness, personality and character as its key drivers. Thanks to the integration of pneumatic systems and alternative construction details, the emotive house can peal its walls, reveal hidden spaces, converse and lirt with the neighbor’s house and in the extreme, protect the neighborhood from the unpredictability of its surrounding environment. Here, a new suburban sphere is formed through the transgression and distortion of property lines where the dialogue between the house, its inhabitants and environment become critical and dynamic catalysts for the radical rethinking of domestic space.

By engaging architectural
history, sociology, economics, and technology in the pursuit of a new domestic sphere. It was clear that
current conditions lacked the ability to adapt to the continuous shiting domestic demands, and the environmental unpredicatability of the site. The necessity to adapt in this ever shiting conditions brings forth the
collaboration between advanced technology and traditional housing systems. The integrated pneumatic systems allows the emotive house to
respond and communicate with the inhabitants, neighboring house, or external threats. The emotive house can inlate and expand the spaces and rooms to allow larger gatherings. Or it could collapse spaces or rooms to make it nonfunctional. The house could communicate with the neighbor’s house and even open spaces to each other
creating a new unidentiied space, that’s neither private nor public. Seasonal brush ires has the ability to completely wipe out neighborhoods. This became a crucial point of the project, where the project splits into two phases. The irst Pre-Fire

pneumatic material. The concrete canvas is a concrete impregnated fabric that is lexible and foldable until its wet, and cured . In case of a ire, the concrete canvas would inlate and harden in the area facing the ire. This allows the house protects not only
itself, but with the collaboration with the neighboring houses it could protect the rest of the neighborhood behind them. This allows a neighborhood to have a irst layer of defence against brush ires.
The Site The site is located in Granada Hills, Los Angeles, CA. The Cul-de-Sac is located next to a ravine and the mountains. This location is crucial
since its the irst contact point between the houses and the ire that threatened the peace of the neighborhood.

Pneumatic Models Models were used in the beginning to igure out an approach to the project. It was important to think about scales and how the pneumatic system could work on dierent scales. For example the big model was built to show to scales of the project, one at the scale of a room and how the pneumatic system can completely change the dynamic of a room by distorting the corners of a room. The second scale could be preserved at 1:1 scale of the how the system could take over the spaces between the structures, creating a new type of insulation that could be
responsive to temperature and dierent condition. Attached to the big model an electronic control board that allows me to con-
trol the pneumatic materials by inlating, and controlling the pressure of the cavity inside the silicone membranes. The smaller study models later became important moments of the project, from a wall that inlate and hit an object responding to that object, a spaces
that is hidden and are only accessible when it inlates, to a slight distortion of a space that turns a homely space to an uncanny one.

This project focuses on the relationship between ilm and architecture. The ilm Metropolis presented an opportunity to morph the illusion and duality in the ilm to a sound building. The building will house the new REDCAT theater. Trompe L’oeil is the concept of creating an illusion, the same way mirrors were used to create an illusion of a miniature model occupying a huge room. Illusion is meant to take a conined space and super-impose programs from around the building to create an ininite space

The son of the city’s mastermind falls in love with a working class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences. The scene revolves around Freder ( the son of the city’s mastermind) visiting the machine room. Freder witnesses an accident in the machine room that takes the life of a lot of workers. Freder then Witness the machine turning into a monster that feed on the workers’ lives. The scene incorporate the Schuton process, the process relying on a miniature model and mirror to create an illusion of bigger building. The scene is shot through a series of single shots.

Schuton process was irst introduced while ilm metropolis. It was used to insert actors into shots of miniatures of skyscrapers and other buildings. A plate glass was placed at 45-degree angle between the camera and the miniature model. The camera’s viewinder was used to trace the outline of the area which the actors would later be inserted. That area would be transferred onto a mirror and the relective surface that fell inside the outline was removed. The actors were placed several meters away from the mirror so that they would appear at the right size.
Concept The duality observed in the ilm got translated in the concept. The concept revolved around the objective and the subjective side of the brain. The objective (let) side of the brain handles processes, logic, and information that we use to make decisions with our physical reality. The subjective (right) side of the brain responsible for visual imagery, auditory processing, and spatial abilities. The illusion occupy the space in between, by distorting program and superimposing over each other the space between the building will magnify and create an ininite space.

Program Layout The program is split into an objective side and subjective side. The subjective side houses the black box theater and exhibition / screening spaces. While the objective side houses the administrative and academic side of the building. The program is then laid out vertically from private to public, the intention is to force people to the highest level. Then as they circulate down, they experience the illusion the building casts. To be able to make use of the views of the site, the building is elevated from the ground level, this ofers the public program unrestricted views of city scape. Neighboring Buildings

View looking at the Philharmonie
Woodbury University Instructor Berenika Boberska Eric Olsen Gerard Smulevich
The original philharmonie project called for a small visiting musician’s residence within close proximity of the main building. The project focus on the stitching between the urban fabric of Berlin and adjacent buildings program to the site. The project sits between two historical architecture buildings
View from the Neue Nationalgalaerie
Hans Scharoun Berlin Philarmonie, and Mies Van-De-Rohe the Neue Nationalgalaerie in the kulturforum. Keeping a visual connection between the two building is crucial. Berlin is a city with wet feet, water pocket can be found a few feet underground, in the future Berlin will have an abundance of water. The idea behind the design is to resurrect the dormant glacier lying underground, and bring it back to the surface in a new form. The resurrected glacier will take the forum of pink water pipes than run throughout the city. The pipes will create a grid that connects Scharoun and Mies together , but in the same time doesn’t block the visual connection. The
program is inserted in the spaces between the grid.
Concept
Before the ice age speciically the Vistulian glacier 25,000 years ago, the landscape of Berlin was not lat. The sheer weight of the glacier compressed and eroded the ground layers, turning the landscape lat. As the glacier melted the water seeped in the underground layers. During the war buildings were damaged and almost destroyed. The rubble from those buildings turned into rubble mounds that resurrected the original landscape of Berlin. During rebuilding and reconstruction, water pipes get used to move the water from the ground and transfer it in the rivers and canals. This is also seen as the resurrection of the glacier. The cycle of the landscape and glacier losing their form (state) and represented into a new form. In the case of Berlin where the landscape was eroded and compressed by the Vistulian glacier, it was resurrected through the rubble mounds and city scape. In the case of glacier that melted and became part of the ground layers, it is now represented through the water pipes that runs through out the city from construction sites to the nearest river or canal.

Hand Sketches Through out the study abroad trip, a journal was kept to document the visited buildings, and general information about the city of Netherlands and Berlin. These information was sketched out and became in it’s own way part of the design process of the project. These sketches represents my own interest, interpolation, and understanding of the buildings and the city’s urban condition.

Modeling Process
Step 1- Pull out fabric frame and prepare the machine.
The process starts by creating a digital model, from there the grasshopper deinition breaks down the digital model surface to points. By analyzing the points of the surface and inding highest and lowest control points. The deinition communicate with the lower robot arm to pull and push control points on a physical fabric surface. Ater the desired surface is reached the top robot arm would then lay a layer of plaster that hardens the fabric in minutes.
Step 2- Clip fabric to the frame using Alligator clips.
Step 3- Wait for point analyzation from the digital model.
Step 4- Physical response from the digital model.
Step 5- Physical surface ready.

Exploded Axon Structure system: the building geometry is based of ruler surfaces that creates a grid. The grid of the surface becomes its structure. The grid makes the structure more rigid, and resist lateral loads, and since the lines of the grid are straight lines they transfer the loads from the top to the ground. Other systems can now connect to the structure, like skin system, and mechanical, and electrical systems. Operable Panels

Lighting system: since this is a lighting company, lighting plays a big role. The showroom is used to test and exhibit work from the company and it is open to the public. The lighting system uses the seams of the surfaces to blur the boundaries between the surfaces, that way the interior space will look as if it was a continuous undulating Surface.
Panel system: the building is a steel building and the panel system responds to the structure and the geometry. The panel connect to the structure. There is two types of panel, depending on the curvature of the geometry the panels are either square panels, for the not so steep curvature, or a triangulated panels for the steep curvature. Embedded in the panels ixed windows for natural light, mechanical windows for natural ventilation. Panel system in the public zone are thermal metal than peal up to create natural ventilation when the space gets too hot.
Structural System
Passive system: the glass panels allow natural light to penetrate the space, making the building more sustainable. The glass panels are all at diferent angles to diminish the amount of the unwanted direct sunlight, and maximizes indirect sunlight. The thermal metal panel act as a passive system when they peal to create natural ventilation by letting hot air out of the building and cooling the air below.
Passive System
Active System
Active system: air condition pushes cold air inside the building, while the radiant loor stabilizes the temperature inside the space. Mechanical windows are used to create natural ventilation when desired, and to control the amount of sunlight that penetrates the building. Panels open at diferent angles to control the amount of direct or indirect sunlight wanted. Lighting system is used to compensate for natural lighting when needed. It is also used to light up the space at night, and create the atmosphere at night.

The objective of this project is to create a housing dwelling where the tenants get to experience the mountains in the comfort of their homes. The mountain manifest itself in the dwellings in two ways, one is physical where the irst loor of each unit follows the topography of the site to get the experience of hiking or walking on the mountain. The dwelling units will not be separated by walls but completely open. The second way is through camera obscura located in the bathroom of each unit. The camera obscura is an optical device that projects an image of its surroundings on a screen. It is used in drawing and for entertainment, and was one of the inventions that led to photography. The device consists of a box or room with a hole in one side. Light from an external scene passes through the hole and strikes a surface inside where it is reproduced,

Ranch: The ranch house is noted for its long, close-to-the-ground rofile, and minimal use of exterior and interior decoration. The houses fuse modernist ideas and styles with notions of the american western period working ranches to create a very informal and casual living style. Their popularity waned in the late 20th century as neo-eclectic house styles, a return to using historical and traditional decoration.

Cape cod: A cape cod cottage is a style of house originating in new england in the 17th century. It is traditionally characterized by a low, broad frame building, generally a story and a half high, with a steep, pitched roof with end gables, a large central chimney and very little ornamentation. Traditional cape cod houses were very simple: symmetrically designed with a central front door surrounded by two multi-paned windows on each side. Homes were designed to withstand the stormy, stark weather of the massachusetts coast. Modern cape cod architecture still draws from colonial designs.
The spanish colonial revival style was a united states architectural stylistic movement that came about in the early 20th century, starting in california and florida as a regional expression related to history, environment, and nostalgia. The spanish colonial revival style was also influenced by the opening of the panama canal and the overwhelming success of the novel ramona set in alta california. Based on the spanish colonial architecture from the spanish colonization of the americas, the spanish colonial revival style updated these forms and detailing for a new century and culture.
Dingbat: A dingbat is a type of formulaic apartment building that flourished in the sun belt region of the united states in the 1950s and 1960s, a vernacular variation of shoebox style "stucco boxes". Dingbats are boxy, two- or three-story apartment houses with overhangs sheltering street-front parking. The elevation view of a dingbat is "half parking structure, half dumb box.".
Storybook: A storybook house refers to an architectural style popularized in the 1920s in england and america. The storybook style is a nod toward hollywood design technically called provincial revivalism and more commonly called fairy tale or hansel and gretel.

Gablefront: A gablefront house, also known as a gable front house or front gable house, is a vernacular (or "folk") house type in which the gable is facing the street or entrance side of the house. They were built in large numbers throughout the united states primarily between the early 19th century and 1920. A gablefront cottage is a smaller variant, consisting of either a single story or a story-and-a-half. They were typically used as working-class dwellings, most being rather simple in design
Modern: Modern architecture is generally characterized by simplification of form and creation of ornament from the structure and theme of the building. It is a term applied to an overarching movement, with its exact definition and scope varying widely. In a broader sense, modern architecture began at the turn of the 20th century with efforts to reconcile the principles underlying architectural design with rapid technological advancement and the modernization of society. It would take the form of numerous movements, schools of design, and architectural styles, some in tension with one another, and often equally defying such classification.
American craftsman: The american craftsman style, or the american arts and crafts movement, is an american domestic architectural, interior design, landscape design, applied arts, and decorative arts style and lifestyle philosophy that began in the last years of the 19th century. As a comprehensive design and art American colonial: movement it remained popular into American colonial architecture the 1930s. However, in decorative includes several building design arts and architectural design it has styles associated with the colonial continued with numerous revivals period of the united states, and restoration projects through including first period english present times. (late-medieval), french colonial, spanish colonial, dutch colonial, german colonial and georgian colonial. These styles are associated with the houses, churches and government buildings of the period between about 1600 through the 19th century.
Courtyard:
Californian bungalow : California bungalows, known as californian bungalows in australia and are commonly called simply bungalows in america, are a form of residential structure that were widely popular across america and, to some extent, the world around the years 1910 to 1939.
Shoebox: In architecture, shoebox style refers to the functionalist style of modern architecture characterised by predominantly rectilinear, orthogonal shapes, with regular horizontal rows of windows or glass walls. Along the same analogy, it refers to undistinguished styles of apartment houses, such as dingbat apartments. The puritan and repetitive shoebox style is seen as a way to low-cost construction.
A courtyard house is a type of house — often a large house — where the main part of the building is disposed around a central courtyard. The main rooms of a courtyard houses often open onto the courtyard, and the exterior walls may be windowless and/or semi-fortified and/or surrounded by a moat. Courtyard houses of this type occupy an intermediate position between a castle or fortress, where defence is the primary design consideration, and more modern plans in which defence is not a consideration at all. In england the courtyard house was a popular design for large houses in the sixteenth century, after noblemen has stopped building themselves castles, but before thoughts of defence were altogether forgotten in the planning of country houses.

collaboration, observation, analysis, design and representation. This project begins with the analysis and subdivision of a large lot site and the
articulation of a shared set of design guidelines that will govern the development of each subdivided unit, and the lot as a whole. Lotgroups are expected to author a set of CC&Rs that will guide the shared development of each lot. A decision was made to focus the architecture towards water related issues, and means of water collection. CC&Rs provide the architect with an opportunity to consider modes of inhabitation for developments that liberate conventional design strategies from standardized templates and foster experimental models of living that consider
sustainability through economic, social, and environmental means, encouraging both diversity and conformity.

Present day
1964 The interstate 405 was developed and has became a major north-south highway in southern California. This highway has a prominent connection to west wood, and the federal building.
1969 The federal building was built across from the veteran cemetery. It contains 19 loor levels, and controls the social security administration, the VA, most of the various veterans organizations, and the I.R.S..
Present Today protest are being held in front of the federal building, in hope that their voice and opinion be heard by the entire nation, and then globally.

Inspiration for water collection system. Data mining is the process of extracting data (Information) from the users to sell to advertisement Companies that uses diferent medias to get back to the User. “Due to ever-expanding communications network and the immeasurable web of interrelationships they generate, the worlds has shed the anachronism ‘global village’ and is transforming into the more advanced state of the ‘Metacity’. How to study his metacity? Initially, one can describe its vastness and explore its contents perhaps only by numbers or data. Its web of possibilities seems so complex that statistical techniques
seem the only way to grasp its processes.” Winy maas metacity/data town
Site Plan
Investigation of the unique relationship between the government, news media, and the public and how social network is efecting this relationship. This project was inspired by the events that was happening in the Middle East at the same time, and the public ability to stand against the government. This was critical to our site since it
has been an evolving area of protest in the heart of Los Angeles. Using the research project as a tool to design a building which houses a journalism school, a working new media, and a drop box components for critical information. The design concept revolved on reversing the panopticon and giving the public the power to keep an eye on the governments actions. The site is located next to an evolving area of protest and authenticity. The site is in heart of Los Angeles where the 405 fwy meets Wilshire blvd. across from the federal

The core wraps outside the building to create an entrance ( lips ) to the building. The lips creates a transition between the existing grid and the new grid to the site. I also decided to create a landscaped loor to create a hierarchy between important programs in the building, and its visible from outside. The landscape loor creates a directionality to the building’s entrance from Linbrook’s side.

The investigation of the concept of Nurbs modeling and the construction on reinement of self-similar curve geometries as well as output techniques, preparations for laser cutting and model building. This investigation focused on the basic command of Nurbs curvature using control points to construct said curves. A set of curves is used to create
a surface, which in turn is used to create an object/artifact.
Step2:- The curves set lay lat on the grid.

Clovis Community Medical Center Professional Work from HMC Architects.
The CCMC Phase C Expansion consists of a new 5-story bed tower with a 148 bed capacity, which compliments the two existing towers. Along with the new patient tower on the campus, a new OR Suite/
ED addition, Kitchen and Dining expansion, and Material Management/Loading dock renovation are planned. The new tower will pair with the existing tower to create a protected outdoor healing garden space for patient, public, and staf use.
The Phase C Expansion is an exciting step in completion of the long term CCMC Master Plan principles. Designed with a revolutionary approach to patient care, innovative and cost- efective construction solutions, and equipped with high-tech-hightouch technology, CCMC’s design meets the needs of today’s more demanding customers. Located at 2755 Herndon Avenue, in Clovis, CA, the new Tower, OR/ED Expansion, and service space renovations comprise over 190, 570 SF. They are to be inserted within the campus fabric on the 137 acre site, connecting to the community by a ring road, connecting to Temperance Avenue, Herndon Avenue, and Highway 168. The expansion will allow CCMC to extend its reach into the community by improving service quality and capacity. This will be a positive impact on the entire Clovis Community surroundings. The Phase C Expansion will prepare the way for future phases on the campus, including a fourth tower and additional infrastructure improvements. The design also creates and preserves strategic outdoor areas surrounding the facility for landscape, pedestrian outdoor access for multiple events, daylighting, parking surface and healing natural views within the overall campus. Exterior design of the new Tower will take cues from the existing campus buildings, ensuring cohesiveness of the campus and maximizing eiciency.

Designed with a revolutionary approach to member care, innovative and cost efective construction solutions, and equipped with high-tech Touch technology, skyport’s design meets the needs of Today’s more demanding customers. Located at 1717 technology dr., In san jose, ca, the new 152,550 sf MOB has been inserted within the city fabric on a 10-acre site, connecting to the community by bike, public transportation, and visually by air. This strategic location in an emergent part of the city is characterized by its proximity to the historic downtown and neighboring cities like santa clara, cupertino, and sunnyvale. The skyport MOB will be the irst building on the site that will accommodate another mob and parking garage in future phases. This wellintegrated irst phase sets the stage for a proposed future central entrance and creates a four-story tall backdrop. The mob is visible from skyport and technology drives as well as the guadalupe freeway, welcoming visitors to the heart of the campus. The design also creates and preserves strategic outdoor areas surrounding the facility for landscape, pedestrian outdoor access for multiple events, daylighting, parking surface and healing natural views within the overall campus.

Landscape The Zen-inspired landscape for Kaiser Skyport creates a sot and inviting, yet sophisticated environment for visitors and staf. The landscape
respects and repeats the forms and massing of the architecture with artfully designed paving patterns and planter areas. Monument signage and accent planting at the entry corner is framed by two canary island palms to match those existing on the opposite corner. A town square-style gathering and event area is ocated to the north of the building, with large shade trees, paved plazas and a stepped seatwall creating an amphitheater. This space can be used for a variety of outdoor events, including farmer’s markets,
concerts, and health fairs. 0
