What to expect on Bull Day Cattlemen and women are invited to join us on Saturday, March 17, 2018 for our second Bull Day and Cowboy Auction from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join us for coffee and conversation, an education program, lunch and viewing of our bulls for sale in 2018. If you would like to purchase a bull, your first opportunity will be on Bull Day. If you aren’t in the market for a bull, we still hope you will join us for an educational program and a chance to learn more about our cattle operation. For directions, see map on page 10.
Buying a Bull If you are in the market for a bull on Bull Day: 1. Sign-up for a buyer number: We need your name, address and phone number. You will be given a blank index card, aka Buyer Card, with every sale lot listed. 2. Look through the sale bulls. Using the Buyer Card, place a check mark by every animal you might want to purchase. This does NOT COMMIT you to purchasing that animal. It does allow you to participate in the Cowboy Auction for each animal you indicate an interest in. Strategy suggestion: If you want to get a bull purchased on Bull Day, you should mark every lot you would be interested in buying. Therefore, if you don’t get the first lot you marked purchased, you still have multiple opportunities to buy subsequent lots. Remember, marking a lot does not commit you to buying, it only reserves you an opportunity to bid at the Cowboy Auction. You can always decline to bid on a lot you marked if you decide you don’t want it. This makes a no-risk, no-stress sale for you and for us! 3. Turn-in your Buyer Card to registration desk by 12:30 p.m. to be qualified to participate in the Cowboy Auction.
Schedule of Events 10 AM – Registration, Coffee & Rolls Walk through the bulls on your own 12 PM – Lunch: “BBQ Beef Sandwiches & Fixins” 12:15 PM – Educational Program: “Cow Nutrition For Breeding Success” 12:30 PM – Turn in your Buyer Card to registration desk to be eligible to participate in the Cowboy Auction. 12:45 PM – Bull Board will be set and auction starts (see “Buying a Bull,” at left). It will probably take 15 – 20 minutes to auctionoff all of the bulls so you can expect to be done and on your way home to do chores by 1 PM. 4.
A Bull Board (displayed in the lunch/program area) will list the buyer numbers interested in each bull. 5. At 12:45 p.m., a Cowboy Auction will be held based on interest documented on the Bull Board. 6. If multiple buyers are interested in the same bull, a Cowboy Auction (see below) will be held for that lot. 7. If there is only one buyer interested in a lot, that buyer will be given the option to buy the bull at the base-price listed or decline purchasing that lot if they so choose. 8. If there is no interest in a lot, we move on. We understand this format will be new to most people. We will review the procedure for bidding on bulls again on Bull Day so if you have questions, don’t hesitate to call ahead of time or ask at the event.

In an effort to “level the playing field,” number remains. This provides a very simple, low-pressure way to purchase bulls. You will always know what the bid is and who is so to speak, we will conduct a Cowboy Auction at 12:45 p.m. for bidding against you. those interested in purchasing a bull on Bull Day. The only problem with our Cowboy Auction is there can be a Drawing from low-pressure sale approaches of Kit Pharo tie bid when the last two (or more) buyers drop out at the same (Pharo Cattle Company) and Dave Nichols (Nichols Farm), here’s time. When that happens, we will give the bid to the bidder numwhat you can expect from our Cowboy Auction: ber with the lowest Buyer Card number. Bulls then be required to increase the bid by $25 to stay in the auction. If s/he increases the bid, then the bidder with the lowest Buyer sell in catalog order, and only if there is interest, based on submitted Buyer Cards (and documented on the Bull Board). 1. Name. This is the registered name of the animal. 2. Birth Date. This is the birth date of the animal. 3. Paternal Grand Sire. Sire of the Sire. 4. Sire. Sire (father) of the animal. 5. Paternal Grand Dam. Dam of the Sire. 6. Maternal Grand Sire. Sire of the Dam. 7. Dam. Dam (mother) of the animal. 8. Maternal Grand Dam. Dam of the Dam. 9. Age of Dam. Age of Dam at the time of weaning. 10. Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs). The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit in the base time frame for the genetic evaluation. EPDs are estimated from phenotypic merit of an individual and all of its relatives and are estimates of one-half the breeding values. EPDs are generally reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g., lb., in., etc.). 11. Data. The weight for that trait in that column adjusted to a constant days of age by Red Angus Association and Beef Improvement standards. 12. Percentile Ranking. This is the percentage rank of the EPD within the type of animal. Rank groups are Proven and Opportunity Sires, Active Dams and Non Parent under Two Years of Age. See page 4 for EPD ranges for non-proven parents under 2 years of age. 13. Calving Ease Direct (CED). Predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of 2-yearold heifers. Producers want live calves - born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc.

14. Birth Weight EPD. Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD. BW - Birth Weight. Actual weight in pounds at birth. 15. Weaning Weight EPD. Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. WW - Weaning Weight. The 205 adjusted weight. This is an indicator of growth up to weaning. 16. Yearling Weight EPD. Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. 17. Milk EPD. Predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves. 18. Maintenance Energy (ME). Predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cow herd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Include selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production. 19. Heifer Pregnancy (HPG). Predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers. 20. Stayability (STAY). Predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least six years of age. Why six? That’s how long it takes a female to breakeven given all the expenses of development.

21. Marbling (MARB). Predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. 22. Ribeye Area (REA). Predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness. 23. Animal ID. How we ID animals on the ranch; corresponds to the animal’s ear tag. 24. Tattoo. All animals bear a permanent tattoo in their right and left ears. 25. Registration #. This is the Registration number of the animal. All Red Angus animals can be looked up on the Red Angus website at www.redangus.org and going to the animal search page and using this registration number. 26. Herdbuilder (HB) Index. As the name indicates, implementation of the HerdBuilder Index will assist producers in building profitable herds. 27. GridMaster (GM) Index. While Red Angus has traditionally been known as a superior maternal breed, those who have retained ownership in Red Angus calves know of their potential to excel in the feedyard and ultimately hang a premium carcass. 28. Weight Per Day of Age (WDA). Weight of an individual divided by days of age; in this catalog this represents the WDA from birth to weaning. 29. Average Daily Gain (ADG). Measurement of daily body weight change over a specified period of time of an animal on a feed test. 30. Calving Ease Score (CE). This is our recommendation for CE based upon data and pedigree. 1star is low; 3-star is high. 31. Price. Base price for this animal, represented in US-Dollars.

Terms. The terms of the sale are cash; the right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the ranch. Settlement. Settlement for the full purchased price of the animal with be made the day of the sale. Checks will be held and not cashed until delivery of the bull. Certificate of Registry. A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. Health Status. All cattle are on a complete vaccination program supervised by Dr. Gibb Mouser of Turtle Creek Vet Service of Ten Strike, MN. Any questions concerning health protocols should be directed to Eric or Alaina Mousel and you are welcome to verify any protocols with Dr. Mouser @ 218.368.6827. Breeding Soundness Evaluations (BSE). Breeding soundness evaluation will be conducted post-sale near April 15 to ensure that all animals are at, or as near as possible, to one year of age at the time of testing. We fully guarantee that these bulls will pass the BSE before the 2018 breeding season. If your breeding season is after June 1, we recommend having bulls retested 3045 days before your breeding season begins. If for any reason, you purchase a bull and that bull does not pass a BSE, you will be contacted immediately. You can wait to have the bull retested if you wish; if you do not wish to wait for a retest, you do not own the bull that failed test, no questions asked. A replacement will be provided if possible. Phone bids. We understand that some folks just plain can’t be at the ranch on Bull Day. However, if you are interested in buying a bull even if you aren’t here, we invite you to call one of the Buyer Representatives before 11 AM CST on March 17, 2018 to leave a proxy bid. The buyer rep will keep your proxy bid confidential and will attempt to purchase a bull for you at the lowest cost possible. If you anticipate leaving a proxy bid with a buyer rep on Bull Day, we encourage you to come visit us at the ranch prior to Bull Day and view the bulls. However, if this is not possible, feel free to purchase a bull riskfree with our Sight Unseen Program with a
