LEARNING, FAITH, LEADERSHIP
This past month, the consultant to our international program, Mariko Fujiwara, arranged for a trip to Korea with the sole purpose of reengaging with a country that at one time was strongly represented at Kennedy Catholic. The goals for our trip to Korea were to connect with our past Korean Alums and their parents, to expose Kennedy Catholic to the Korean market to reacquaint them to our amazing school, to engage with agents that are interested in promoting our mission, to engage the perfect Lancer families to the extent we recruit our domestic families and finally to establish partnerships.
Mike Prato - President
“
A spiritual conscience is what ultimately underpins the Lancer Family.
”
Stella Lee ‘07, Sehee Song ‘17, and Justin Ahn ‘11 were on hand to assist in the recruiting of families. The first two days, we connected with 25 families with serious inquiries. Homestay Director Teri Crosswhite and I would have been lost without them. They truly told our story and later that first Sunday night at dinner, alums, their parents and siblings joined us to further share their memories, personal encounters and how helping us was about giving back. I loved hearing that. We engaged agents of many kinds. I did have one heated exchange with an agent only interested in volume not relationships. Yes, contrary to who we are, but we were able to meet with a couple that we have had experience with in the past, who may be our best lead for future Lancers. Unexpected, but most important were the spiritual encounters our parents and alumni shared and how those events shape them today. “I was faced with an ethics question,” one alumnus told me. “As a graduate assistant, I was ‘required’ to cover my department head’s teaching assignment, grade his papers and submit my research under his name. I gathered several of my fellows and I wrote a petition which we all signed. It actually did change that department. I never would have seen this as injustice had I not been taught ethics and morals at Kennedy Catholic.” A spiritual conscience is what ultimately underpins the Lancer Family. The seeds were planted and connections reestablished and confidently, we honored the words of our Advisory Board president, “Seek only those families and students that exhibit what it means to be a Lancer. Your faculty, parent community and student body expect that.” That was delivered by our amazing alums.

advisory period. In direct response to the needs that arose recommendation to add the Community Period at the end of the school day, between 6th and 7th periods. This new Community Period takes the place of the former Advisory Period. The focus of this time allows students to have study breaks, meet with teachers during office hours, attend club and activity meetings, connect Links with their Link Crew, facilitate student government meetings and a variety of other activities. So far this year, the students have had the opportunity to have class meetings, club and activity meetings, study hall, office hours and meet together as Link Crew and Links. The students appreciate the new addition to the schedule. It helps to slow down their day and allows them to attend club meetings and office hours they otherwise may not be able to attend due to their before and after school schedules.

Night Out for the Homeless This year, 15 students and 5 chaperones and presenters attended the Kennedy Catholic St. Vincent DePaul Club Night Out for the Homeless event, from 9pm Friday, September 29 - 9am Saturday September 30. The goal of this annual event is to bring attention to and be in solidarity with the homeless in our community. Stories were told, games were played, and bonds were formed. Biographies of a few homeless people opened our minds to the lives and stories of many who do not have homes. We realized that not everyone without a home has the same story. Students learned about the relief programs and shelters in the Seattle area. Please keep the homeless in your prayers as the days get colder and wetter and the nights get longer.
Father Evoy Scholarship Banquet 2017 Thank you to everyone who attended the 22nd annual Fr. Evoy Scholarship Banquet! The scholarship was founded in honor of Fr. Gerard Evoy, SJ, a devoted priest, gifted educator and administrator. We are so grateful to everyone who gathered with us for a fun-filled evening, with proceeds benefiting deserving young men and women who attend Kennedy Catholic. Thank you to Joe Faccone, for coordinating this special event.

Scoreboard Unveiling After many, many months of hard work and collaboration, we were thrilled and honored to celebrate the unveiling of the William F. Eisiminger Scoreboard on September 25. With the addition of this new scoreboard, we are taking yet another step toward establishing ourselves as the premier athletic program in the region. We are thankful to our facilities team who was instrumental in coordinating all aspects of the installation throughout the summer and fall months. Also, to National Sign Company and Elmecco Electric, our partners in the design and build. This beautiful scoreboard, in Kennedy Catholic colors and bearing Bill Eisiminger’s name, is a much needed addition to Eisiminger Field and will be the centerpiece of all athletic contests for years to come. The placement of the scoreboard (on the outside 2 lanes of the track) was determined during the SEPA Review and Master Planning process. The approved construction permit required the scoreboard to be placed in the northeast corner of the football field and be oriented to the southwest to improve visibility for spectators and minimize visibility from adjacent homes. The installation of the scoreboard remains part of our long-term efforts to continually improve the Kennedy Catholic facilities. Next steps, dependent upon fundraising, include a new 6-lane track that would replace the current 8-lane version.

Alumni Profile: Justin Cox ‘03 Justin Cox ‘03 graduated from Kennedy Catholic with a plan: marry his now-wife Jennifer Cox (Hilton) ‘04, and join the family business. Before he knew it, he had accomplished both. Justin’s family owns a one-of-a-kind business. His typical day varies wildly, but it is all about embracing his and his clients’ creativity. It’s even in the business name: Creative Ice. Before joining the family business, Justin was deeply involved with the Kennedy Catholic family. He and his wife Jennifer dated all through high school and Justin joined the cross country team. Coaches Mr. McMillen and Mr. Lang showed Justin that running could be enjoyable, and that hard work will always pay off. It’s a lesson that Justin has applied to his life since then. On any given day, Justin can be found in the shop with his signature boots and tee shirt. He might be forming the 300-pound ice blocks that are the base of all his projects, crafting a batch of specialty cocktail ice, or etching a company logo in a custom made sculpture. Justin works side by side with his father, Steve, taking ice and turning it into works of art. Their talent and teamwork was highlighted at the 2013 World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they were part of the team that won first place. The competition lasted six days, with temperatures ranging between 40 degrees and -40 degrees Fahrenheit. The challenge required extreme endurance, transforming giant blocks of ice into a custom masterpiece. The finished piece, titled Hunting Dragons, towered over 7 feet tall. In the future, Justin is looking forward to coming back to Kennedy Catholic as a parent. He hopes his two kids, Kyle and Carter, will experience the same sense of community and support with the Lancer Family.

National Merit Scholarship Program Congratulations to Kennedy Catholic’s Sam C. for being named a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and to Florence Marie A. and Noah W. for being named Commended Students. Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 PSAT. The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors nationally. The semifinalists qualify to compete for National Merit Scholarships worth $32 million. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are named finalists, and half the students in the finalist group win a National Merit Scholarship. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.6 million students who took the PSAT in 2016.
International Students Each fall, our global Lancer Family grows as we welcome new international students to Kennedy Catholic and with each graduation, for over 30 years, our international alumni expand. How blessed we are to have both domestic and international students representing the Lancer Family all around the world. Over the summer, one of our current American families planned a trip to several Asian countries. Our Cultural Ambassador, Fil Tribble, contacted an alumna in Japan, then connected her with the vacationing Lancers. Our former student spent an entire day taking the family sightseeing around Tokyo. At the end of August, President Mike Prato, and Homestay Director, Teri Crosswhite, attended educational fairs in Busan and Seoul, Korea. Former Kennedy Catholic students and their parents welcomed our traveling Lancers, networking to assist our team with translations and introductions to perspective students and agents. Sharing stories about their days spent at Kennedy Catholic, both parents and alums glowed with fond memories.

2-Time Olympian, NCAA Champ Meets with Volleyball Program Members of the Lancer volleyball program had quite the experience the last week of September when the coaches took advantage of a short break in their schedule and arranged for a special guest speaker to pay them a visit. That visitor was Courtney Thompson, a 2-time Olympian volleyball player winning bronze in 2016 and silver in 2012. The University of Washington graduate was also part of the 2005 NCAA Championship team and holds a NCAA record for most assists in a game. As decorated as Thompson’s volleyball career is however, it is only part of who she is. Today Thompson regularly partners with some of the top mental conditioning and mindset speakers including Pete Carroll of the Seahawks and Mindset guru Dr. Michael Gervais. Thompson is also the co-founder of the Give It Back Foundation, a non-profit organization that shares the mission of leading the next generation of athletes toward healthy competition and generosity. After the presentation the girls got to hold Thompson’s Olympic medals and pose for pictures, an experience many will never forget!
Brokenshire Returns to Take Lead Over Wrestling Program Kennedy Catholic is excited to announce the hiring of Bobby Brokenshire to lead the Lancer wrestling program beginning in the 2017-2018 winter sports season. His collegiate successes included being named an Academic All-American an a NJCAA National Qualifier. Brokenshire returns to lead the Lancers armed with 20 years of coaching experience including time as an assistant at Franklin Pierce and as the head girls coach at Auburn High School. Captains Council takes to Camp Long for Year-Opening Retreat 30 members of the Kennedy Catholic Captains Council took on the Challenge Course at Camp Long in West Seattle as part of the kick-off for their year of service. Now in it’s second year, the Captains Council is a leadership development and athletic advisory group led by Athletic Director Sam Reed. Participants have been nominated by coaches and former teammates, and represent each of the athletic programs on campus. “This retreat was an important way to start the year,” Reed shared. “With the group split between returning members and new, this experience allowed them to experience something together and to learn about themselves as leaders along the way.” The Captains Council meets monthly throughout the year where they are taught athletic leadership while also serving as a student advisory board to the athletic department.
