COMMUNI-K PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I remember the day this picture was taken. It was the middle of July, 2001 and my wife Laura and I were on pilgrimage in Rome, Assisi and Medjugorje. Traveling by ourselves meant many mistakes with languages, transportation and restaurant ordering, to mention just a few. Despite the challenges, the takeaway for us was an invitation to grow in holiness. We were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, but more Mike Prato - President importantly, I was discerning leaving teaching and working in human resources. I was presented with a very nice financial package and after 25 years in education, I was ready for a change. The last day in Rome, I found myself journaling in St. Peter’s Square. As I turned to look at a low-flying pigeon, I was staring straight at St. Peter who seemed to be presenting me with an invitation. Fifteen years later, I am the president of an amazing school encountering Jesus every day through my relationships with our staff, our students and you. I almost missed the invitation! What does that encounter look like to you? Bishop Sam Jacobs, in his article Heaven is Calling: Encountering Jesus in Real Time, suggests that “every Christian is called to sanctity and sanctity does not consist especially in doing extraordinary things, but in allowing God to act through these encounters . . . having faith in his action that allows us to live in charity, to do everything with joy and humility, for the glory of God and as service to our neighbor.” As we enter the weeks ahead, expect to encounter Jesus in unexpected and equally ordinary ways. Remember, often it results in a course adjustment.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE This school year our bell schedule includes a homeroom time at the beginning of the second period of the day. This five minute time allows us the opportunity to join as a community in prayer and read the daily announcements. Members of the Campus Ministry team and I all have an assigned day to lead the students and staff in prayer. Each week our prayer is focused on a theme. This week’s theme is “Service”. As our Juniors prepare their ISLE contracts, and our students begin to think of how to fulfill their service requirements at the other grade levels, we are hoping our prayers focusing on service will help them. Our days are always so full of activities; work, school, practice, homework - we need to remember to spend time focused on others, and providing for the needs of someone else. Nancy Bradish - Principal
God calls us all to service. We just have to listen. And in honoring that call, we are closer to God.
“Each one as a good manager of God’s different gifts, must use for the good of others the special gift he has received from God. Whoever preaches must preach God’s messages, whoever serves must serve with the strength that God gives him, so that in all things praise may be given to God through Jesus Christ, to whom belong glory and power forever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 4:10-11)

Ben G. named first Lancer Athletics Athlete of the Week As a way of recognizing our outstanding Kennedy Catholic student-athletes, Athletic Director Sam Reed launched what he hopes to become a new tradition this week with the debut of an “athlete of the week” poll which ran on the school’s athletic Twitter account, @OurLancerNation. The poll, which featured 4 outstanding performances from the previous week of fall sports action, ran for 48 hours on Twitter, where students, alumni, friends, and family all were eligible to cast a single vote. At the close of the poll, more than 360 votes had been cast with Senior Football Captain Ben G. winning with 42% of the vote. Ben earned his nomination on the heels of a winning performance versus Kentridge where he threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another. Winning athletes of the week will be recognized in class in front of his or her peers and treated to a variety of small surprises and treats. Their name will also be displayed on the readerboard in front of the school. Reed explained, “The purpose of this program is to provide recognition for all of our student athletes and to celebrate our diverse successes within our own halls,” he continued, “this is a small, interactive and fun way for our Lancer community to recognize the hard work put in by our student-athletes.”
Kennedy Catholic prepares to bring back girls bowling for winter sports season If you listen closely you might be able to hear the crash of bowling pins ringing in the distance, and come this November the student-athletes responsible for those actions will be our own Lancer Girls Bowling team. That’s because Kennedy Catholic is adding girls bowling to it’s offering of athletic programs with the launch of a new North Puget Sound League that will feature six schools – Decatur, Federal Way, Hazen, Thomas Jefferson and Todd Beamer High Schools along with our own Lancer squad. A WIAA sport since 2001 and a club sport for many years prior, girls bowling is a growing sport within the state as it takes place during a winter season that has less offerings than fall and spring neighbors. “I’m excited to bring girls bowling to Kennedy Catholic as I am confident that this sport will create new opportunities for a number of female student-athletes who otherwise wouldn’t have been involved in a winter activity,” said Sam Reed, Athletic Director. “Girls bowling offers all of the benefits and teaching opportunities that come with other team sports, and it will be fun to see our Lancers compete.”
Photo from April, 1999
Registration for girls bowling will begin in mid-October, while the official season runs from November 2 – February 6. The team will practice after school at nearby Hiline Lanes, while the school will be interviewing for a head coach in the weeks ahead.
Bowling has a history at Kennedy Catholic as the school ran boys and girls programs through the 1980s and ‘90s, highlighted by the girls winning a State title in 1999, two years before it would become an officially sanctioned WIAA sport. “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary of the school this year,” Reed added, “resurrecting this program is great way to connect our rich past with an exciting future.”

Evoy Dinner 2016 On the evening of September 18, a festive group of dedicated supporters gathered for a four course Italian feast and delightful conversation at the annual Fr. Evoy Scholarship Dinner. For over 20 years, Mr. Joe Faccone has presented this banquet at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church in South Seattle. Proceeds of the event support the Fr. Evoy Scholarship Fund providing many deserving Kennedy Catholic students with tuition assistance. Fr. Gerald Evoy, SJ, was a devoted priest and educator who was passionate about making Catholic education affordable for all families. Thank you to all who attended this memorable event and thank you to everyone who generously supports the Evoy Scholarship.
October 2016 Profile: Colonel Daniel Furber ‘87 Colonel Daniel Furber graduated from Kennedy Catholic in 1987 and after college, he joined the military. Almost 23 years later, working through goal after goal, each one larger than the previous, he is serving as a Project Manager for Transportation Systems in the US Army. Along the way, he earned a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Army War College and a Masters of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School. The military isn’t just his job. Through his years of service, Colonel Furber has come to think of his soldiers as an extension of his own family, and supports them any way he can. When not spending time with his family or his soldiers, Colonel Furber can be found flying his Aviat A1B Husky airplane as a way to create peace for himself. He is also working on following his personal goal of running 20 miles per week. Taking this time for himself allows him to think about problem solving in new ways. As a husband and father of two, he is consistently motivated by his desire to make them proud and he works hard to be an example of success for them. Since his time at Kennedy Catholic, Colonel Furber’s own success has grown, regardless of where he was based, or what project he led. Kennedy Catholic is a place that pushed him forward and holds wonderful memories. He remembers it as a community where he met great people who shaped his life and as the cornerstone of his success.

Emmaus College Sister School Students Visit Kennedy Catholic Seventeen Australian students and their three teacher chaperones visited Kennedy Catholic High School from September 24-28. The students, who attend Emmaus College in Melbourne, Australia, enjoyed the chance to be a part of American culture as they became family members of Kennedy Catholic students for a few days. The host families treated their guests to the sights of beautiful Seattle, home-cooked meals, and perhaps a chance to use the washing machines and dryers before they headed home. The exchange, in its fourth year, was created by Angela Hunter before she retired home to Melbourne. She found the perfect fit in Emmaus College, a Catholic high school very similar to Kennedy Catholic. Students who participate in the trip to Australia and New Zealand are hosted by Emmaus families for the final five days of the trip. They develop life-long friendships, which leads to an appreciation for the importance of a sense of family and home. Beyond that, both Emmaus students and Kennedy Catholic students appreciate the opportunity to experience a different culture from the perspective of a student their own age. We loved having our Australian friends visit and look forward to seeing them when we return next summer. Until then, we will have fond memories of Mr. White (Emmaus chaperone) doing the morning announcements in his lovely Australian accent.
Advent Twilight Retreat: Celebrating 50 Years of Faith Please join us on Thursday, December 1, from 6-8:30pm for a memorable evening retreat honoring our 50 years of faith tradition. All are welcome. We will conclude with a Mass and blessing. There is no cost to attend this event, however, reservations are required by November 20. To register, please send an email to Amy Hall including your name and number of participants in your family. Please include the ages of any guests under 18. 50th Anniversary Annual Fund Drive For 50 years, Kennedy Catholic High School has educated over 9,500 Lancers. As a member of the Lancer Family, you know Kennedy Catholic is not just a school, but a place that offers a transformative experience. Since 1966, we have fulfilled our mission to graduate leaders following Christ in a school community that is accessible, diverse and committed to pursuing the fullest potential of every student. This is achieved through the dedication of professional faculty and staff, a diverse student body, and the generous support of parents, alumni, and the broader community. The Annual Fund supports facility improvements, financial assistance, curricular enhancements, co-curricular programs and helps keep faculty and staff salaries competitive. The success of the Annual Fund is essential to an innovative student experience and directly influences the future of the school in countless ways, visible and invisible. Together, everyone’s support has an impact. Please take a moment to prayerfully consider a gift or pledge to the Annual Fund in this, our 50th year. The amount is not relevant, but the full participation of our community speaks volumes. All gifts and pledges are 100% tax-deductible. Contributions can be made online, or if you prefer to make a donation by phone, please call 206.957.9718. Help us prepare for the next 50 years.
Pray With Us The month of November is a time traditionally designated by the Catholic Church to remember our loved ones who have passed away. In this 50th year since our founding, in particular, we would like to honor those who came before us and who helped contribute to our legacy. Please email names of loved ones you would like remembered at campus masses during the month of November. A prayer card will be completed in their name and the names will be enshrined on the altar for remembrance.

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist Congratulations to Kennedy Catholic’s Allison Z. for being named a 2017 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 PSAT. The 16,000 semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of high school seniors nationally. The semifinalists qualify to compete for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth $33 million. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are named finalists, and half the students in the finalist group win a National Merit Scholarship.
