LEARNING, FAITH & LEADERSHIP A Kennedy Catholic Lancer Publication
COMMUNI-K PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE There Are No Wasted Conversations! I love the post-Easter readings from the Acts of the Apostles. Only a month ago, a fearful collection of men and women disciples were stunned at the loss of their Teacher (Jesus). To be sure, intellectualizing His teachings inspired faith and thus, belief in His resurrection, but this emptiness was immense. In time, the risen Christ reveals Himself to them, inspiring boldness where hopelessness and fear once resided. This, followed by ringing acclaim by Peter himself to the very group who a month earlier sentenced Jesus to death, is shocking. He went from liar to inspirer! How many were converted that day?
Mike Prato - President
It was not just Jesus’ miraculous appearances that jump-started the church. The Holy Spirit and angels assisted. Such was the case of the apostle, Phillip. An angel appears to him and sends him from Jerusalem to Gaza, via the desert route which was in the middle of nowhere. Most interpretations would characterize this as “the country road, or a road less traveled.” When he arrives he finds a single Ethiopian eunuch who was assisting the queen of Ethiopia. The angel gives him no instructions, but seeing the eunuch reading from Isaiah, provokes a conversation; “Do you understand what you are reading?” The Ethiopian replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” This is music to an evangelist’s ears! Phillip proceeds to teach him about the risen Christ, the teachings of Jesus and the apostles and ultimately, baptizes the Ethiopian into the Church that very afternoon. The rest of the story? The eunuch’s conversion means the “inclusion of black Africans among the charter members of the faith . . . all of which symbolizes from the beginning the African involvement in this new faith that spread throughout the world.” There are no wasted conversations! Ten years ago while standing in line at Dick’s Drive-In, a gentleman approached me. He was the father of Marisol Lucero Sanchez ‘07, who at the time was a junior at Kennedy Catholic. He hands me his card, we have a brief conversation about Spanish initiatives and we depart with a hand shake. This fall, he reappeared asking to meet with me. We spent the next hour talking about Hispanic/Latino initiatives in education and how he, who now works in the office of the president at Central Washington University, is looking for interested partners. Subsequent conversations and a visit to Ellensburg has resulted in a new vision of how colleges and universities can partner with high performing college preparatory high schools in supporting our families of color, especially within the Hispanic/Latino community. This month, this vision was brought to reality. A group of Kennedy Catholic students spent the day on the campus of Central Washington University touring the campus, having lunch with their student body president, being taught by a professor of cultural anthropology before meeting with admissions to identify how this can be accomplished financially. It was an amazing trip! continued on page 15 Kennedy Catholic High School

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future.” ~ Alex Haley May has arrived, and while we are preparing for the end of the school year, and all of the celebrations that will ensue, we are also planning for the upcoming school year. It always feels a little strange to bridge two school years.
Nancy Bradish - Principal
On May 2, 2017 we welcomed our new families with our New Parent BBQ and Orientation. We provided information for our incoming freshman parents to help prepare them for the high school world. I remember greeting parents last year as Principal, and at the same time sharing my own apprehension about this new stage in my own family’s life as I too had a child about to enter high school.
We have another great class coming in next year. This is a testimony to the caliber of education and faith formation the students receive at Kennedy Catholic. The New Parent BBQ is an opportunity to share with our new and returning families all of the new programs and classes being offered and the service work being done by our students. When asked why the families chose Kennedy Catholic for their high school, one parent responded “Because it is a school of God, faith-filled.” Heavenly Father, thank you for your presence with us as we end our journey this school year, and embark on our journey for next. Amen

Spring Break NOLA 2017 During spring break week of 2017, twenty Lancer students and five Lancer staff members participated in an annual service trip to New Orleans in partnership with the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) organization. Since its inception, NOAHH has been working in partnership with hard working, low-income families in New Orleans to build and finance new, safe, affordable homes. The program makes homeownership possible for families who are unable to qualify for traditional home loans but have a stable job, good or no credit, and the willingness to contribute 350 hours of sweat equity to the building of Habitat homes.

New Orleans continues to rebuild housing that was destroyed by the devastating flooding of Hurricane Katrina. During their stay, students and staff had the opportunity to hear first-hand stories of the damage, destruction and personal loss brought on by the hurricane. NOAHH has become a beacon of hope in the rebuilding process by recruiting and deploying tens of thousands of volunteers to construct new homes in damaged, blighted neighborhoods. New Orleans is a city with historically low rates of homeownership and high levels of poverty, yet it is a place of resiliency, hope, and cultural vibrancy. When the group arrived at the Habitat house there was a foundation and sub floor only. By the time the final work day arrived, all of the internal and external framing was complete, the roof rafters were installed, the external sheathing was hung and the foam board was started. Throughout the week they encountered both individual and group challenges. Each presented an opportunity for growth. Communication and team work with each other was essential to success - and most especially, the group learned the value of having faith in each other. Alyson, our Habitat leader, modeled the virtues of patience and strength, confidence and calm. Almost the entire team was inexperienced - yet she was able to make everyone feel capable and productive - helping them gain pride in their work. On Friday, the group had the unique opportunity to attend a Habitat house dedication. They watched as a new home owner received the keys to her home after many months of hard work and effort. The smile on her face was priceless. The week was physically and mentally exhausting, it was challenging on so many different levels - but none of the group would ever trade it for a different Spring break experience. In reflection, the group felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experience and to see the impact they had on others around them - emotionally, physically and spiritually. They realized also, the impact others had on THEM. The experience helped everyone understand the need to continue to commit to making a difference in the lives of others. After all, that is what our faith calls us to do.

Celebrating a Language Far from Dead by Mary Grace C. Kennedy Catholic’s Latin students participated in the 70th annual WABC Junior Classical League Convention from April 7-9. It was the third time our Latin students have attended this Convention, taking place at Warm Beach Conference Center in Stanwood, Washington. The weekend was filled with academic, artistic and athletic competitions, engaging speakers, and an abundance of Roman themed activities. Four of the six international officers serving on the Junior Classical League student board were from Kennedy Catholic. Ruth Z. as the President, Mary Grace C. as the Vice President, Cade H. as the Editor, and Karianne B. as the Historian. All Juniors, these four students spent several weeks throughout the school year prior to Convention planning and preparing for the Classics filled weekend. Kennedy Catholic’s delegation was well represented at WABC JCL, as over 25 total students and chaperones attended. Ms. Tiffany Swalm, the new Latin Instructor at Kennedy, entered into the Convention spirit willingly and was a tremendous help in the planning and execution in each of the four Officer’s duties. Three additional faculty members graciously gave of their time to help chaperone this event; Darren Olson, Mark Ralston, and Susan Lewis. Some of the activities during the weekend included gladiatorial combat, Roman wrestling, “Olympika” races, a toga procession, Roman banquet, and a modern day singing of Homer’s Odyssey. Several Kennedy Catholic students brought home prizes for each of these events. Additionally, Sophomore Chloe D. swore in as the new 2017-2018 WABC JCL Vice President, continuing on Kennedy Catholic leadership in the Latin community. Ruth Z. described it as, “a unique but incredible annual event that we look forward to and that gets better every year. This Convention was no exception.” Overall, the entire weekend was a success as the students and chaperones dove into an enriching experience of the Classics and grew in their love of the Latin community and language.
The Sparrow Project Kennedy Catholic is honored to announce our participation in The Sparrow Club. The Sparrow Club matches children in dire medical need with a school and one or more cooperate sponsor(s). The school “adopts” their Sparrow and performs acts of community service in honor of their Sparrow. The cooperate sponsor matches school service hours with a monetary donation (usually around $1.00 per completed hour). For information and background on Sparrow Clubs you can browse the website at: www.sparrowclubs.org This year the Spring Community Service Classes have adopted Nelson Obando as our Sparrow. Nelson is a 14-year-old boy who was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma brain tumor last year. He is being treated at Seattle Childrens Hospital and is cared for by his brave and faithful mom, Ovidia. Aside from courageously fighting cancer, going through radiation, chemo and surgery to remove the brain tumors, his tender soul and charisma have shown all who know him that he truly is a warrior. Nelson has spent much of the past year away from school, his friends and doing the things he loves. He has endured more medical procedures as a child than most of us face in a lifetime. Despite these challenges Nelson’s mom and he are grateful for life and put their faith and trust in God. Ovidia struggles to maintain a work schedule while being Nelson’s caretaker 24/7. This family faces financial hardship--yet their faith and love make them a blessing to all who touch their lives. The entire school has been invited to complete ISLE hours and any other service in honor of Nelson. Every hour makes a difference in building the relationship between our school, the Sparrow family, and our community! Page 6

Ordinations Priesthood ordination is an incredibly joyful moment for the candidate and for the entire church! After years of discernment and formation, a man is ready to offer everything for Jesus and for God’s people. The three promises of obedience, celibacy, and a life of simplicity provide an opportunity to be fruitful and generative in ministry. The newly ordained becomes a priest for life, chosen by God and the church to offer the sacraments, preach the faith and shepherd God’s people. For the individual seminarian ordination is filled with great support and celebration from their Archbishop, family, friends, mentors, priests, Crozier members, Serra clubs, Knights of Columbus, Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women, seminarian faculty, and even their vocation director! There are many special parts of the rite that make this mass very unique and interesting if you are able to attend such as: the prostration and litany of saints, laying on of hands, prayer of ordination (highlighting the ministry of the priest), anointing of hands with sacred chrism, passing on of the chalice and paten, etc. We hope you are able to attend this year June 25th, 10am at St. James Cathedral. Ordination is a major step in their formation but for newly ordained priests their formation continues through their ministry (the people teach them in their affirmation and in their questions) and through their first five years of being a priest in ongoing priestly formation training. Congratulations to Kennedy Catholic Alumnus Louis Cunningham ’10 who will be ordained a Deacon on May 20 and Alumnus Jeffrey Moore ’06 who will be ordained a priest on June 3. Lenten Day of Service and Reflection: Learning to Welcome the Stranger On Sunday April 2 Campus Ministry partnered with World Relief Seattle to hold a refugee simulation. Students and faculty were given ethnic clothing to wear and family biographies to memorize. Family groups then had to move through four stations including: food station, medical station, US State Department station, and a processing station on their way to gain refugee status and escape to America. After the simulation, students met with a refugee family from Syria to debrief and share stories. The day wrapped with a screening of Salam Neighbor, a movie documenting Syrian refugee camps. Students and faculty said that the experience was eye-opening. All were grateful to reflect on the Gospel call to welcome the stranger.

ALUMNI NEWS Alumni Profile: Rome Delasalas ‘87 On April 17, 2017, Rome Delasalas ’87 completed a lifelong goal. He was one of over 32,000 registrants participating in the Boston Marathon. A dedicated runner, he completes somewhere between 200-300 miles each month. Competing in the Boston Marathon has been a lifelong goal for Rome, one that started back in 1996 when he ran the Los Angeles Marathon. Since then, he has completed sixteen marathons and four Ironman races. Rome’s passion for running has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. As a student at Kennedy Catholic, Rome was a three-time varsity letterman, and held the school record for the 4x100 relay. Mr. Danforth and Mr. Wallitner pushed him toward excellence, encouraging him during countless Spring track practices. Even today, Rome moves through each day with the goal to be better than yesterday. Coaches weren’t the only source of inspiration at Kennedy Catholic. Rome notes that Mr. Paynton, former math teacher, demonstrated that working with numbers and thinking analytically could actually be fun. Mr. Muckerheide focused on the written word and the meaning that could be found in it. Rome went on to have a successful career in the United States Navy, with positions in California, Washington, Japan and Tennessee during his more than 20 years of service. Today, Rome is happily married to his wife of over 25 years, Grace, with whom he shares his son, Christian. He enjoys his time in the outdoors, and working with his Boykin Spaniel on agility and bird retrieval.

Eagle Scout Josh Z. Josh completed his Eagle project during the summer of 2015. He transformed a sloping, often muddy, section of trail at The Cove into a set of gravel filled stairs. The Normandy Park Community Club donated the materials and Mr. Andy Batcho provided expertise and oversight. The original trail was widened and 22 steps were individually fabricated, installed and filled with gravel. The stairs increase the safety of the trail, help decrease erosion and make it easier to enjoy the natural beauty of The Cove grounds.

The Constitution of the State of Washington We bet most of you didn’t even know it existed. After all, it doesn’t receive nearly as much attention as Independence Day. There aren’t any retail sales that capitalize on it. Since it occurs when fall is knocking on the door, it doesn’t entice us to eat outside. But September 17 is a very important date in American history. It’s the date when the United States Constitution was signed by 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. Here in Washington, our state constitution is kept safe in our State Archives. The photos below show the preamble to our state constitution and also features Kennedy Catholics student, Nick B.’s great, great, great grandfather, James Hungate signing the Washington State Constitution in April 1931 as Secretary of State J. Grant Hinkle and Hungate’s wife watch. Hungate was a delegate to the 1889 Constitutional Convention in Olympia, but he had to leave the convention and head home to Whitman County before the constitution was ready for his signature. Hungate’s signing 42 years later was authorized by a resolution of the State and House of Representatives. Better late than never.
