Professional tips on planning a stress-free, enjoyable bridal gown shopping appointment You have that beautiful ring on your finger and now it’s time to shop for THE DRESS! But what should you expect? Will it be stressful? Will you know it’s the one? This is that moment in your life that you want everything to be perfect. And while we love a good episode of “Say Yes to The Dress” and scanning Pinterest until we drop, these resources can set a bride for disillusionment, frustration or even unreal expectations. Here are some of our tips for making your dress shopping experience fulfilling, memorable, and most importantly fun!
1. Selective Invite
Bring only those individuals who will support you, encourage you and give you that boost of confidence. This is different for every bride. Some brides come completely alone, others bring just their mom (or a mother figure), while some bring the whole, huge entourage. Your comfort, and how you wish your appointment day to go should be up to you though. You should be able to set a boundary on which people you would want to bring. If you have a mom that tends to be negative or a little critical and of course you want her with you, just determine that you won’t let her get you down. An excellent bridal consultant will be able to encourage you and support you and lovingly keep your mom (or sister or negative Nancy friend) in check!
2. Adults Only We get it. You want to include everyone. Maybe it’s your child, or your flower girl that’s only 3 or 4 years old. It could be your niece or nephew that your sister wants to bring. While there is no real taboo or policies on this at bridal boutiques, we find that the toddlers or young school-aged children get bored, tired and sometimes irritable. This can set you up for frustration, distraction, or nerves. But again the appointment is really all about you and your comfort. If you love kids and some whining or running around doesn’t faze you, then by all means bring the little sweeties!

5. Keep Inspiration Pics to a Minimum
A Stylist may ask you if you have pictures. You may be dying to show her your Pinterest Wedding Board. This is a great resource for brides. We highly encourage you to really consider this a resource, inspiration, or a way of communication for you. Many times Pinterest is filled with photos that are very unrealistic. It might be a photo of a dress that you see that is not even available or photographed in a way that is very stylized or photo shopped. You would be surprised how many times we see brides that want all the pouf, glitz, glam and bling possible and then walk out ordering a very streamlined, modern dress with not one ounce of embellishment. And Vice Versa!

Most high quality Boutiques will have Stylists or Consultants getting you in and out of dresses. While the super modest or body conscience bride might find this unnerving, we promise you will get comfortable with us! But if you typically love wearing any type of shape-wear garments, then go ahead and bring it with you. A nice strapless bra might have you feeling super confident until you are ready to shed the bra for seeing how that completely cutout back will look (Pro Tip: Seamstresses can sew in bra cups for those “no bra’ type designs). We suggest bringing along a nice pair of shoes in a heel height that you envision wearing on your wedding day. Towards the end of an appointment when you start narrowing it down to your few favorites, throwing on a heel can go a long way in helping you clarify how you feel in a dress! While we wouldn’t suggest having a full trial hair and makeup done prior to your appointment, we do say that a little attention to makeup and your hair being somewhat fixed also helps tremendously while seeing your self in Bridal Gowns.
4. Be Honest
Listen, we are here to serve you! An experienced bridal stylist wants the very best for you on your dress journey. Be honest if you have a body issue you are concerned with, like a scar, a medial device, or anything you want your stylist to be aware of prior to starting. We are here to help select the best styles. We will ask you to get outside your comfort zone if you are just a little worried about your flabby arms! You might be surprised with an uncovered arm style after all. This honesty also comes to your bridal style investment. We typically hate to use the term “Dress Budget” but money is money and we don’t want you spending more than you need to. We say a dress and the entire bridal look is an investment. Be honest about this with your stylist. She does really want to help you stay within this price point so you can invest your other money in fantastic flowers, yummy food and fun music to keep your celebration going.

You have probably heard that you need 9 months to a year for ordering you dress. However, we want to clarify this just a little bit for you! We really do love seeing brides shop for their dresses as soon as possible so that they have all the options and resources available to them and can check that huge part of the wedding planning off their list. But honestly you can special order a dress with just 4 months or so. You will always want factor in for 6-8 weeks on alterations, so that needs to be considered. Most Bridal Shops have a plethora of designers they have to offer. Each designer or manufacturer has different delivery timelines. Sometimes you can special order a gown and it’s ready to ship to your Boutique in one- two weeks. Some designers have limited availability and each gown is custom cut and will take 4- 6 months. And many Boutiques can offer wonderful gowns off the rack and you will be taking them home that day. This is especially great for brides that plan to get married fairly quickly.
7. A Realistic Schedule
Again we will highlight that the social media influencers, Pinterest and wedding reality television shows will make you feel as though you should leave no stone unturned or that shopping at five boutiques is part of ‘the experience’. But we will just tell you that dress shopping can be tiring. Sometimes it’s emotional. Sometimes it’s frustrating. No one wants to multiply that several times, especially in one day. Our recommendation is to make one appointment at a really quality boutique. If you really don’t connect to a dress and you really don’t find the one, then schedule an appointment at a different shop for a different day.
8. Stop Looking This might sound like a HUGE duhh. But really, do not for one-second rethink your decision. All bridal gowns are “Final Sale”. Once your gown is ordered, move on to other big and equally fun details of the wedding planning. Think about it like this; when your fiancé proposed and you said yes and were so happy, did you keep looking for a better fiancé? Nope! Or at least we hope not. Trust your gut. Trust that feeling of confidence you felt in your step on that day your chose your dress (we promise that sparkle and pep in your step tells us, the professionals, that it’s the one). TIPS AND OPTIONS FOR TABLE LAYOUTS
When organizing table assignments, use these helpful tips to determine the correct number of guests to place at each table and how to help them find their seat. This process might be a bit overwhelming, as it’s the last major checklist item before you tie the knot. When assigning tables for your guests, try to be accommodating by putting yourself in their seat. When they look right, left and across the table, can they have a conversation with those around them? Dinner service is usually a full hour, so guests prefer to sit with people whom they share a connection. After dinner, the plan is for them to be dancing and mingling with others.
RESERVED SEATING DID YOU KNOW 84% OF GUESTS PREFER TO HAVE AN ASSIGNED SEAT AT A RECEPTION? Here are reasons why: • Assigned seating reduces the guest’s anxiety of finding an available seat or table with guests they know and want to socialize • Locating your assigned table speeds up the process of guests entering the reception for dinner • Guests prefer to be directed at large events rather than fend for themselves. If the elegance of a served meal is your plan, please make sure to leave open seats for guests that arrive at the reception without a reply. The “surprise guest” scenario happens at every wedding. It’s the nature of the reply and human error. Being prepared with extra seating is the best plan to accommodate these guests. • Guest count up to 300, leave 2-4 open seats together • Guest count 300 to 500, leave 4-6 open seats together • Guest count over 500, leave 6-8 open seats together

If you choose opening seating at your reception, make sure to set two additional tables above your final guest count. These over-flow tables guarantee everyone will be able to find a seat and feel comfortable with their table guests. It may cost a little more for linens and centerpieces, but it avoids that awkward moment when someone just can’t find a seat. [ Planner Tip: Place a few ‘Reserved’ signs on tables for your wedding party and immediate family. You will want special tables reserved for these important guests. ]

CHARGER PLATES A charger plate is a large, decorative base plate that is not intended for food service, rather for aesthetics during a formal dining experience. In addition to adding elegance to the table design, it also catches food that falls off dinner plates as guests dine. Once the dinnerware and charger are removed, the linens on the table remain clean. Chargers range in size from 10”-13”, so extra room at each place setting must be made to accommodate the plate, glassware, flatware and table décor. Charger plates are not typically used during buffet service as guests assume they take those plates to the buffet. If your wedding reception includes having a Kings/Head Table, you could use chargers to add a décor element and instruct those select few guests at the table to keep their charger at the place setting.

A décor feature for weddings is having one large “King’s table” as the head table to seat their entire wedding party. This large table becomes a creative way to add more dynamic décor to the reception.

Most banquet facilities supply 6ft or 8ft tables to combine into one large table. If using tables provided by the venue, take note that you will need to order enough linens to cover each table. Doubling up on the tables gives you more room for décor pieces. If you decide on using single tables, you will have very limited space to add additional décor elements including charger plates. Banquet tables are 30” wide. Charger plates placed double-sided on a single banquet table take up 26” leaving very little room for glassware, flatware and décor. If your design layout has guests sitting on one side only, then there is plenty of room for a charger and décor.

Louisville has numerous event rental companies that rent custom farm tables or square tables for use in your head table. Consider renting some of these to add a unique design element to your reception space.

There is no right or wrong answer according to wedding etiquette, but most couples prefer to sit with those in their wedding party, family or parents. It is not recommended to split up couples or guests of your wedding party. The diagrams show the maximum number of guests recommended for each table set-up. Add or remove tables/ chairs to suit your seating needs.
SWEETHEART TABLE
Couples can chose to sit alone together during dinner at what is called the sweetheart table. This option sometimes works well when you have struggles figuring out whom to sit with as to not to offend anyone. The following information has been compiled directly from the County Clerk’s Office Marriage licenses are issued in the County Clerk’s office in each county and are currently $35.50 (check, cash or charge accepted). If you have any questions, please contact the county clerk's office in your area.

The couple must appear together. The license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance and the license fee is non-refundable. The license must be used within the State of Kentucky.

You must be 18 years of age to be married in Kentucky without parental consent. Applicants 16 & 17 years old must have parental consent and the license issued in the county of residence of the under aged applicant. If both applicants are under age, the application needs to be made in the bride’s county of residence. No one under the age of 16 may be issued a license unless they are pregnant and have a District Court Judge issue a court order directing the Clerk to do so.
PROCEDURES
No waiting period or blood test is required prior to issuance of a marriage license. The couple must complete an application that includes: • Name and Address • Date of Birth and Age • Place of Birth (If in Kentucky list county, in another state list that state) • Father’s Name • Mother’s First and Maiden Name • Current Marital Status (Single, Divorced, Annulled, Widowed) • Number of Previous Marriages of Bride & Groom • Occupations of Bride & Groom • Race of Bride & Groom • Whether Bride & Groom are related (First and second cousins are not permitted to marry in Kentucky) • Date of Marriage www.LouisvilleWedding.com
1. Marriages shall be solemnized only by clergy, justices and judges of the Court of Justice; retired justices and judges of the Court of Justice, except those removed for cause or convicted of a felony; county judge/executives; such justices of the peace and fiscal court commissioners as the Governor or the county judge/executive authorizes, and certain religious societies. 2. At least two persons, in addition to the parties and the person solemnizing the marriage, must be present. 3. There are no residency requirements or licensing requirements applicable to ministers or priests who wish to perform marriages in Kentucky. 4. A minister or priest, all justices and judges of the Court of Justice, justices of the peace and fiscal court commissioners may perform marriages anywhere in Kentucky. #LouisvilleWedding | 80
UPDATE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD The following information was gathered directly from the Social Security Administration Website. If you legally change your name because of marriage, you need to tell Social Security so that you can get a corrected card. If you are working, also tell your employer. If you do not tell us when your name changes, it may: • Prevent your wages from being posted correctly to your Social Security record, which may lower the amount of your future Social Security benefits. • Cause delays when you file your taxes. [ Important: We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. We cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document. All documents must be current (not expired). We may use one document for two purposes. For example, we may use your U.S. passport as proof of both citizenship and identity. ]
What Original Documents Do I Need? Citizenship • If you have not already established your U.S. citizenship with us, we need to see proof of U.S. citizenship. We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport. [ Important: This documentation is only required if you have not already established citizenship with us.] Name Change If you need to change your name on your Social Security card, you must show us proof of your legal name change. Documents Social Security may accept to prove a legal name change include: • Marriage document (from County Clerks Office) • Court order approving the name change If the document you provide as evidence of a legal name change does not give us enough information to identify you in our records or if you changed your name more than two years ago (four years ago if you are under 18 years of age), you must show us an identity document in your prior name (as shown in our records). We will accept an identity document in your old name that has expired. If you do not have an identity document in your prior name, we may accept an unexpired identity document in your new name, as long as we can properly establish your identity in our records. www.LouisvilleWedding.com

An acceptable document must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph. For example, as proof of identity Social Security must see your: • U.S. driver’s license; • State-issued non-driver identification card; or • U.S. passport. If you do not have one of these specific documents or you cannot get a replacement for one of them within 10 days, we will ask to see other documents. Any documents submitted, including the following, must be current (not expired) and show your name, identifying information (date of birth or age) and preferably a recent photograph: • Employee identification card; • School identification card; • Health insurance card (not a Medicare card); or • U.S. military identification card. [ Note: Your new card will have the same number as your previous card, but will show your new name. We will mail your card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents. ] You should expect to receive your new card to arrive by mail within two weeks after filing. #LouisvilleWedding | 81
TEMPORARY
marriage LICENSE
When you receive your license there is a perforated portion at the bottom, which is your temporary license as proof you are married. You will want to take that form with you on your honeymoon incase proof is needed that you are indeed married. This temporary document is not an approved/recognized legal form you can use to update your social security card.
FILING
your LICENSE
Check in advance with your officiant, church, or wedding planner and find out if they mail the marriage license for you after the ceremony. If not, designate someone from your family to seal it, stamp it, and drop it in the mail with the envelope provided by the County Clerk’s office. It will require extra postage since it is an oversized envelope. They can also drop off the license to any county clerk’s office in the Commonwealth. Once the document has been received by the clerk’s office, you will receive your actual proof of marriage that day if you like. If someone in your family drops it off they can receive the certificate on your behalf. If the certificate is mailed, you should expect to receive the document by mail within 3 weeks.
