The allure of the Maldives as an endearing destination of choice has again proved to be an exceptional global hit as it attracted a record high of nearly one million tourists in 2012 – while seeing an upswing in new markets. Maldives saw tourists continue to surge into the islands’ resorts, hotels and guest houses in 2012 with 958,027 arrivals compared to 931,333 in 2011 – a 2.9 per cent increase. Such is the demand for a unique holiday experience that only the Maldives can offer, Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb predicted that the magical one million mark will be surpassed in 2013. His confidence lies in the fact that while the European sector, with a backdrop of continuing economic depression, saw an expected, but limited near-four per cent fall in tourist arrivals, the Middle East, Americas, Africa, and the Asia and Pacific Rim sectors all showed healthy gains of between 9.7 per cent and 49.9 per cent.
