Industry Overview: §  The Solar energy sector in Bangladesh has been growing in an exponential rate since 1996. §  Around 650,000 households in rural Bangladesh purchased Solar home systems (SHS) between 1996 to 2010. §  Its popularity is mostly due to innovative financing scheme by NGOs like Grameen Shakti and Rural Service Foundation making SHS affordable and within reach of rural households. §  The World Bank subsidises around 26 NGO engaged in SHS marketing throughout Rural Bangladesh located outside grid electricity §  Major financing is channelled through the leading non banking financial institution Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) §  Despite the success of off grid solar electricity 63% of Bangladesh is still out of the reach of grid electricity. §  This draws a very promising future for off grid solar power solutions in Bangladesh. §  The Largest of the 26 NGOs are Grameen Shakti and Rural Service Foundation both of who are RAL’s major clients along with Rahimafrooz Renewable Ltd.

Solar §  To cater to the solar energy sector RAL manufactures “Rahimafrooz Solar” brand of battery. §  These are 12V, 30-130 Ah lead acid battery @10 hours. §  RAL annually manufactures 26,000 units of Rahimafrooz Solar brand. §  SHS application is booming throughout Bangladesh’s rural household growing at more than 30%. §  RAL currently holds a total market share of over 60%.

The current size of EV population requires a sizeable demand on storage power requirements, due to its dependency on electricity as fuel. §  Realizing the available ‘replacement’ market RAL started manufacturing ‘Ulka’ Brand of battery applying tubular technology of 120-140 Ah @ 20 Hours. §  With an average production capacity of 4,000 units Ulka was formally launched in March 2011.
