Sincerely,

ASK LADY WANDA QUESTION #1

Dear Lady Wanda, My son recently got a new job and is moving out. I am pleased to know that he is moving forward with his life. We have always talked to him about good credit and overall survival, as well as made sure he had a balanced life which included God. But in his teens, he thought that we were strict because his friends’ parents had few rules and he still mentions this although today he is in his early 20s. Now that he has his apartment, his attitude is arrogant and disrespectful. He seems to still resent how he was raised. Part of me wants to say good-riddance because he is so ungrateful at times. How do I deal with this because he is still my son and I still want to be a light?

When I’m on the other end of those messages, I have an easier time reading a longer email that is well-written than reading a short-hand email, trying to figure out if the writer meant “there” or “they’re.” If I had a penny for every email I get from an indie artist inquiring about career coaching that doesn’t have a greeting, punctuation, or decent grammar, I’d be on a plane to Tahiti right now. I stare at my computer screen, about to book a mentoring session when really, I want to scream, “Have you heard of spell check… or periods?” But alas, my coaching sessions are not focused on proper grammar. They are, however, focused on getting results in your chosen career. EmpoweringE n r i c h i n g E n e r g i z i n g E l e v a t i n g Electrifying

Life

Changing Anointing Sonya McGuire is a preachers’ daughter who learned to sing, act, and appreciate music at a very early age. With music playing such a dominant role in the home, Sonya had no choice than to follow the unofficial “family business.”Initially, Sonya chose drums to express her musical creativity and talent. Later she developed a love for singing and directing, quickly becoming the obvious choice for musical director at her father’s church. If describing Sonya McGuire in one word it would be anointed. She is truly a multi-gifted individual. She is a gospel singer, recording artist, songwriter, musician, and Radio Personality for Freedem Radio.com. Sonya truly has ministry at the heart of all she does. Sonya’s unique ministry and style of praise & worship, has electrified audiences, offering them an original praise and worship experience. With vocal ability that is comparable to none and marveled by many, Sonya incorporates thought provoking lyrics with unmistakable jazz overtones into her music. Her organic songwriting abilities blend soul, traditional gospel, jazz, funk, and praise & worship. Her gift has made room for her to share the stage with artists such as Mariah Carey, Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribett, Donnie McClurkin, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Fred Hammond, Kim Burrell, Marvin Sapp, Natalie Wilson and S.O.P., Israel Houghton, Karen Clark –Sheard, Rizen, Youthful Praise, Mary Mary, , and the Georgia Mass Choir. Her most recent collaboration with Corey “Coco Brother” Condrey’s Stand Project introduced her most popular single Should’ve Thought About It to audiences across all 50 states.

and transcends racial, cultural, and even language barriers. In 2005, Sonya’s music ministry spread internationally as she was commissioned to deliver several concerts during a twenty-one day European tour. The presence of God was so prevalent during her performances that they became much more than just a concert, they evolved into worship & praise experiences. She’s also ministered in 18 cities in Asia, from Japan to Malaysia. As a result, Sonya has toured annually & has released a European Christmas DVD of her ministry overseas. Sonya shares her gift, conducting choir workshops, conferences, and music seminars throughout the United States. Sonya has received numerous awards and nominations including Best New Female Artist at the 2008 YGEA Awards, Best New Artist at the 2008 Gospel Choice Awards and 2009 Stellar Awards, Best Female Singer for the 2010 and 2011 Gospel Choice Awards. With all her accomplishments, she is yet a faithful servant in her community. Sonya’s the founder of three nonprofit organizations: Sister, Soul & Psalms, an organization that empowers women of the arts; Psalms of Thanks, which serves as a vehicle that provides food, and clothes to those individuals that are less fortunate and The Think Project, an adolescent and teen empowerment movement. Sonya has experienced monumental success of her chart topping first project “My Journey”, and is currently working on her sophomore album “The Next Chapter” to be released in Spring of 2013. 4 Steps to Convert Goals into opportunities and results will start showing up JUST because you got clear about what you Results are up to (and declared it to the universe)!

1) Define your purpose, aka your “Statement.” Your “Statement” is the one sentence that will let anyone know your overall purpose both in life and the music biz. This purpose will inspire you in all of your pursuits. You can call it your ultimate goal, but it’s bigger and more useful than that, and it’s something that you can be today, not something that you are waiting to obtain. My Statement is: “I am out to make a living and inspire the world through creating music and sharing my process.” Everything I do is in line with my Statement. This article is in line with it. Performing live, recording a new record, and composing music for a beautiful documentary or a funny video is in line with this Statement. On the other hand, when I received an offer a few months ago to compose music for a violent video game for very little money, I turned it down. It was not in agreement with my Statement. As forks in my road appear, revisiting my Statement helps me take the right path. To figure out your Statement, look at your goals and see what the common denominators are. Ask yourself why you have those goals. What’s the goal behind the goal? Is your goal to make money? Why? So you can travel? So you can express yourself with music more easily? The actions you take will vary greatly depending on the true goal you’re working towards. Once you’ve looked at your goals, write one sentence that answers the question “What are you all about?” Write three different options. Tweak them so they become one clear sentence. If it inspires you and is something you can tell anyone and they’ll understand you immediately, then you’ve got your “Statement.”

2) Assess what you’ve got going on, and what you’d like to have going on. List any and all goals that you have for yourself, your life, and your music career. Then list any resources you already have (people, accomplishments, tangible things, and skills). Now list what’s missing. You may even want to enlist the opinions of family, friends or fans to help fill in any gaps you may not be clued in to. (In my e-course, this is the part where you’d be asked to fill in the “Blind Spot Survey.”) You’d be surprised what you have going for you already! Believe it or not, the next step is to let go of all these goals and remain unattached to them. This means that while you would be super psyched to win a Grammy for “Best New Artist,” you understand that achieving this goal will not define you, and your career can be fulfilling even if you do not achieve this goal. The ultimate goal is to be living the way you want to live, indefinitely, not just until a goal is reached. 3) Figure out your main strength, aka your “Entrée.” Do you have a day job? Are you trying to make money by performing live, by licensing your songs, or by selling merchandise such as CDs and t-shirts? Do you have other sources of income? Do you have other passions? If you were a restaurant menu, all of these ways of making money would be the different “courses.” As an indie artist, spreading yourself too thin will not get the results you want (and you’ll probably resemble a chicken with its head cut off). Thus, it’s time to figure out your Entrée, the main focus of your career. While you may love to work and even thrive in other areas of the music industry, you should focus your skills, energy, and next actions on your Entrée. Continue on page 20 I realized that I had four courses on my menu:

Congrats! You will be amazed how Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com PO. 982, Tuskegee Institute, AL 36087 Ph. 334-421-0843

G.M.W.A. Asst. Chapter Represenative

Carey O’ Neal Sanders, song and guitar master has never given up the desire to get his message of God’s love to an international audience. He is a life-long lover of good gospel music of the “quartet style.” He is truly a quartet singer from his heart. In these modern times when the originality of the “quartet sound” has given way to the contemporary sounds of praise and worship and holy hip-hop and since many of the original good old quartet singing boys have passed on into eternity, Carey decided that while he is Great Songs Like.... yet alive to maintain the integrity of this glorious art form in its purest originality. “Good Deeds”, “Use Me Lord”, “Amazing Grace”, and “Too Late” For Booking, Retail, and Radio Services, Call 803-842-0090 P.O. Performing live, licensing my recorded music, film/commercial composing, and speaking/ teaching. Until I was able to define my Entrée, I was stuck on where to move forward. So I didn’t move at all. I uncovered that, for me, if I expanded in the licensing area, the other three areas would also, automatically, expand. This, indeed, was my Entrée! [Insert loud cheer, sigh of relief, weight rolling off shoulders, etc.] What was next for me was to finish my third record so I could license it. The result of figuring out my Entrée gave me clarity, focus, and motivation. To figure out your Entrée, list all the things you do and skills you have (make records, perform live, co-write with others, etc.) and then ask yourself this: Which one thing that you do, if it took off, would help all the others succeed and expand? This is your Entrée. Now look at those other items. You know, the ones that didn’t make the Entrée cut. Those gigs, projects, ideas, processes – if in line with your Statement – are still important for your career and who you are. They are just not the main focus at this point. They remain on your menu. Keep this list handy so that when you get stopped or challenged while working on your Entrée, you can remind yourself there are other areas in your career where you can take action. 4) Take action! And put your plan into reality (aka a calendar). Write down the results you’d like to see in one year, 6 months, 3 months and 1 month regarding your Entree. (For example, in 1 year, you will have sold 1,000 CDs at live shows, in 6 months, 500 CDs, etc.). In a calendar, write down actions you can take to have these results happen. And then DO THEM like your life depends on it!

page 20

reassessing every once in a while to make sure you are still inspired by what you are doing, and that you are committed to a career you love, no matter what the results. And lastly, a little note on being overwhelmed: “Overwhelm” is due to two things: working alone and being stagnant. The cures for overwhelm are to ASK FOR HELP and to GET INTO ACTION.

Wait! Don’t post that music video on YouTube without a sync license! Musicians getting in trouble with the law – well, that’s nothing new. What’s a good music resume without a couple of arrest reports to fill out the career dips? But what about that YouTube “take down” notice you just received for the video you posted of your band covering “Freebird?” You got a mechanical license to release the song on your CD (right?), and the video turned out awesome, so you owe it to the world to post it online. But did you get a sync license for your online videos of cover songs? “When you attempt to ‘synch’ a sound recording of a song with any audio/visual element, you also need to obtain a synchronization license (or sync license). This is a separate, negotiable license that allows you to use a particular piece of music in synch with other visual elements, such as in your music video.”

A little note on the results you’ve laid out for yourself: they are mini goals, benchmarks and targets to reach. Do not be attached to them happening, just keep plugging away and Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com PO. 982, Tuskegee Institute, AL 36087 Ph. 334-421-0843

Laugh of the day.......... A Trip To The Doctor’s Office An 85 year-old man went to his doctor’s office to get a sperm count. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, “Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow.”

The next day the 85- year-old man reappeared at the doctor’s office and gave him the jar, which was clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked what happened and the man explained: “Well doc, it’s like, First I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing.

Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, and still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then and armpit and she even tried squeezin’ it between her knees, but still nothing. The doctor was shocked! “You asked your neighbor?” The old man replied, “Yep. And no matter what we tried, we still couldn’t get the jar open.” HaHa- What were you thinking? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com

-stimulated. I believe websites for music discovery, direct to fan marketing, fund raising and the like, including all of the major social networking sites, can be extremely valuable if used correctly, but they can also devalue you as a commodity very quickly when used incorrectly or too often. It’s a thin line to walk and you’ve got to find the right balance for your specific audience base. And here are some other pitches you may have heard in your travels… Use our service and get new fans! Be “discovered” by a record label! Enter our battle of the bands to win big and become famous (it only costs $100 to apply)! Sound familiar? Of course it does. Bottom line: It comes down to numbers, and in these types of scenarios, the artist is put into a position that only devalues his relationship with fans. The truth: The best way to do all of these things is to get out there and play your music for the people as often as possible. There is nothing more important than the one on one (in person) connection that occurs between artist/performer and listener – especially when it comes to making and retaining new fans. Going the extra mile in these situations makes a huge difference. For instance, when you’ve got the time, try sending a personal email to a fan as opposed to including him/her Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com

page 29

on a mass mailer, email that fan a free preview of a new song, or simply give him/her a complimentary tee shirt to thank them for helping promote your upcoming gig to their friends. Gestures like these keep consumers coming back and build brand (or in this case band) loyalty. After all, if you truly value your fans and treat them like more than money pits for merch sales and mere numbers towards the door count of your next show, they will value you, your artistic vision, and most importantly, your music, MORE. So what does it mean to actually “make it” in the modern music industry? I would argue that “making it” today means being able to survive off of your music – and this can come in many forms. Perhaps you make most of your income touring, or through merch sales, licensing, working at your local coffee shop, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you are able to pursue your art, release what you want to release, write the songs you want to write, play where and when you want to play, and control the rights and ownership to everything you’ve created. If you can make this happen and maintain it, count yourself among the smart and lucky. And this brings us back to the second, and more important, half of Ian MacKaye’s quote: “Enjoy baking, sell your bread, people like it, sell more. Keep the bakery going because you’re making good food and people are happy.” Think about that. He is describing the most basic approach to entrepreneurship. No

Continue from How do you achieve success P29 No frill, no guarantee of fame and wealth, but if you work hard and intelligently apply your skills, you can “succeed.” After all, the strongest and most reliable asset to your career is you, plain and simple. You are your own biggest fan and wealthiest investor (not necessarily financially speaking), and the greatest thing about living in this era of industry uncertainty is that we now have options as both creator and consumer – and those options are being defined largely by independent musicians like us who are dictating our own business model, thinking outside of the box, and discovering our own path to success. And a lot of times that “success” is not even measured in dollars. You don’t need a record label to release a quality album or song, you don’t need an agent to get your music licensed, and you most certainly don’t need a booking agent to play more shows and go on tour. Does having those things help if the situation is right? Absolutely, it definitely can, but the chances of landing a “fair” deal any more or being “discovered” are virtually non-existent, unless of course you’re willing to give away everything for no guarantee of anything in return.

shows, going on tour, promoting your music grassroots style (using every available tool at your disposal), and most importantly – networking. That’s the key – networking, and accessibility to reliable information, because today it’s not just who/what you know, but rather how you work with them to get what you both collectively want. Indie On The Move This is why we created Indie on the Move, because sometimes, even the hardest of workers and smartest of candidates, even the most talented of musicians, and those who have put in their 10,000 hours, simply lack the necessary information (and more importantly – relevant and accurate information) to get the ball rolling and keep it rolling. So we at Indie on the Move compile, maintain, organize, contribute, and expand our information inventory on music venues, booking data, bands, show opportunities, press and radio contacts, classified listings, music news, etc. for you… for free.

What is that PBS quote we always hear? “Knowledge is power?” Well whoever said that got it right. And somebody else said, “Power to the People.” I believe in that too, and in the current music marketplace, those That said, if you want something, you two things must work together hand gotta get off your ass and go after it. in hand if you want to survive. victim of the latest robbery tactic— there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.

Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation. I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars.

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim. They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run. The police officer said to manually lock your car door by hitting the lock button inside the car—that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you!

Two weeks later, my friend’s son had a similar happening. While traveling, my friend’s son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase—you name it. History of Over Coming Your Addiction Ministry this growing ministry. Over Coming Your Addiction has also received assistance from State Senator Shirley Kitchen and her Staff. Among other things, her office has helped coordinate and sponsor more than one “Anti-Addiction March” in our neighborhood.

DR. CHESTA DAVIS In 1999, the Rev. Chesta Davis proposed establishing an adult outreach ministry at Temple Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to be called “Overcoming Your Addiction”. Grasping the need for such a ministry in our immediate service area, and envisioning its potential for strengthening community ties, the Session (governing body of the church) approved the use of Church Facilities and resources for weekly addiction meetings beginning the summer of 1999. In less than six months this ministry grew from an average attendance of 5-10 participants every week to as many as 25. Meetings were first held every Thursday evening from 7:008:00p.m. In support of a district-wide effort to offer such meetings in at least one location each week, Temple agreed to change its meeting time from Thursday to Tuesday nights. In 2000, our Session (governing body of the church) applied and for, and received an $8000.00 grant from the Philadelphia Presbytery to support Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com

Also in 2000, Temple began an “Annual Awards”, program in recognition and celebration of those who participate in the Twelve Step, Bible- based program to remain “substance free”. Many “graduates” have subsequently joined Temple and are now working with others with their addiction and related problems. From 1998-2000 Overcoming Your Addictions was on radio station WNJC 1360 AM Philadelphia, Pa and in 2009 on WTAN 1340AM Clearwater, Fla. which expanded its outreach to those who wish to remain “substance free”. The “Overcoming Your Addition Ministry” maybe human in form and organization, but its purpose is divine. And that purpose is to render faithful aid to sisters and brothers in pain—people just like ourselves, no better, no-worse—in their determined fight to remain free of substance abuse.

EVANGELIST MICHELL TUCKER & UNITY Orangeburg, South Carolina

anointing of God flowed in my life as I traveled with Pastor Tucker and doors began to open I was able to share the stage with such recording artists as Evangelist Dorothy Norwood, opened service at pastor Shirley Caesar’s church. Had the privilege to sing with the late Timothy Wright, Ann Nesbitt and the churches of pastor John P. Kee and Apostle Richard D. Hinton, I had the opportunity to record my testimony that God gave me in 2007 “Directions” and “Thank You”. evangelistmichelltuckerandunity.com

My story…In 1999 I encountered a great My Life…Jeremiah 29:11, Born from a mother who was grieving over the lost of a 1 year old daughter and spousal separation I came into a life full of battles. But little did she know, she was carrying God’s Anointed. As I grew, many challenges confronted me, some I won, and some I lost. I soon began to involve myself with church musical activities, soon people began saying “that little Gal can sing”. I said to my cousin “I’m going to be a great singer and preacher one day.” Well the devil heard that and my life suffered. I allowed the devil to control my life in a great way. I began to become promiscuous and lonely. I knew something was missing in my life and I was going to find it. In 1982 I was invited to Garden of Prayer Church, Pastor Ebell Tucker preached “Jesus Loves you”. At the moment it seemed as if God was speaking directly to me and my Answer was yes. I surrendered

warfare with the devil trying to discourage my walk with God. I lost my home, my second child and faced a hurtful divorce, left only to raise a 1 year-old alone working a part time job. Only God knew what would become of me. One Sunday morning being led of God my pastor, Evangelist Ebell Tucker spoke a prophetic word to my spirit “Don’t Take the Devil’s Injection, God is going to give you double for your Troubles.” That’s when the words to my song “Directions” birthed. God encouraged my heart to remind me that I’m his anointed one and that souls would be convicted and converted, the lame would rise from wheel chairs as I ministered in songs. In 2004 another evil attack of the enemy to take me down for the last time, but God stepped in right on time and a victorious testimony of my Life and my Story, through my songs. To God Be the Glory.

PRAY THIS EVEN IF YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE IT! IT WILL ONLY TAKE A MINUTE. Dear Lord, I thank You for this day. I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I’m blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness. Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude. Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You. Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things that are of you. Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. And it is the best response when I’m pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can’t pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will. Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those that are lost and can’t find their way. I pray for those that are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don’t know You intimately. I pray for those that don’t believe. Gospelnewsmagazine@gmail.com

I thank you that I believe. I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers, and for each and every family member in their households. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes, that they are out of debt and all their needs are met. I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees it. I love you and I need you, come into my heart “Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.”

SALVATION Is As Simple As…

ACKNOWLEDGE That Jesus Christ is God’s son!

BELIEVE In your heart that God raised Him from the dead.

CONFESS That you are a sinner and thou shall be saved. The Gift Of

SALVATION For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13 Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me. John 14:6

Prayer Of SALVATION Heavenly Father, I am a sinner. I want forgiveness for all my sins. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for me and rose again. Father, I give you my life to do as you wish. I want Jesus Christ to come into my heart. This I ask in Jesus name. Amen!

Angelic Shaw Sisters Of Dallas, Texas

“Starting All Over”

“He Is A Miracle Worker”

The Angelic Shaw Sisters is a Gospel Singing group from Dallas, Texas. The group members are all sisters. They have been singing together all of their lives. They enjoy sharing the story that they were the church choir at the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church were their father, the late Reverend James Shaw was the Pastor. They have been singing under the name of the Angelic Shaw Sisters for over twenty (20) years. Their newest CD is entitled He is a Miracle Worker. The title song started out as a simple testimony to the Lord and the many miraculous things he was doing in the lives of the Sisters, their Musicians and family. The testimony led them to writing the song. The many Miracles that took place during and directly after the recording made it easy to decide what would be the title song. This CD is traditional gospel but the songs range from ballad like “Say You Love Me” recorded by permission from DJ Rogers, to “Jesus Paid it All” a foot stomping hand clapping quartet song. What ever your musical taste we are sure you will find something on the CD that you will enjoy listening to. The previous CD is entitled Starting All Over and is still available. The CD’s can be purchased on-line at CDbaby.com; hard copies can be purchased from Forever Young Records in Grand Prairie, Texas.
