Phase 1 Introduction

What is The ‘New’?

The idea is to introduce a social media platform, Instagram, for the purpose of teaching and learning through new and relatable content posted on the platform.

Phase 1: Introduction

Target Audience

Aged 45+

SCAD DMGT Faculty

Don’t use Instagram regularly

Motive: To bridge the communication gap between faculty and students, with context to social media.

Phase 1: Introduction

What is the problem?

While Blackboard offers multiple features to create & post information online, it is time and effort consuming for certain activities. For example - while introducing an industry specialist to the students, the faculty needs to provide them with some background, work samples, etc. Instagram could do this in a few seconds as opposed to Blackboard.

Not just this, Blackboard doesn’t provide real time notifications & updates and requires regular check ins for announcements, creating a communication gap.

Note: For now, the idea is to add on to Blackboard and not substitute it.

Phase 1: Introduction

Why do we want to introduce this?

Instagram is a platform which is widely used by university students globally and hence will allow opportunities for collaboration & exchanging information with one another.

With the various features offered by Instagram (live, stories, bio link, highlights, etc.), professors will be able to share latest work of industry mentors, brands and even alums with minimal clicks.

Phase 1: Introduction

Benefits

● This innovation is directed towards improving communication between students and faculty and making them more interactive, engaging and collaborative in nature.

● It will be a new tool which will update and alert the parties involved instantly.

● Instagram will promote visual literacy via pictures, videos, reels, etc. The Instagram account proposed will not be anyone’s personal handle. The professors and the students will have a new handle FOR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES ONLY which will be provided to them via SCAD, just like their Outlook accounts.

Example: In the class you discussed topic 'x' today and the professor shares a reel about it. This would help building a conversation around it hopefully, supporting collaboration & communication between classmates and professors. Not just the professor but the students could share things too if they find it helpful for the course.

Attributes of Innovation

Phase 1: Introduction

Since all the students use Instagram, study material posted online will not go unnoticed. Additionally it will provide an instant contact between the two parties.

Relative Advantage(s)

Instagram has a more convenient and accessible interface than Blackboard (current platform in use). The new features and updates make the dynamic more interesting.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and Instagram runs on this principle. It supports visual literacy via not just images but videos as well, making teaching & learning easier.

Instagram’s algorithm eventually will suggest content based on the professor’s liking, making it simpler and more efficient to share content effortlessly.

Phase 1: Introduction

Trialability

The idea is experimentable and can be easily tested with one cohort of students to begin with.

The students can be asked to follow the professors ‘educator’ account and the professors can share information via group chats, stories, posts, reels, etc.

Phase 1: Introduction

Compatibility

Existing Knowledge Notions and Perceptions Need and Betterment

The use Blackboard Learning will help them understand the basic features of the innovation

Perceived as both a positive and negative platform at times, when used for a good cause, can bring impact

Because their is a need for such a platform, it will improve the overall working of the SCAD system

Phase 1: Introduction

The ‘new’ is fairly observable as the success story of one faculty using the platform can easily be seen and shared with others in the system.

Observability

Phase 1: Introduction

Complexity

Instagram’s Interface is user - friendly but on the contrary it is bombarded with features so could feel a little overwhelming for first time users.
Phase 1: Introduction

Phase 2 Framing

DMGT Professors

They will be the adopters of the platform and hence are one of the key stakeholders. While they will have help, from the TAs, they will still be the key decision makers.

Key Stakeholders

DMGT Students

They will be one of the early adopters of the innovation. While they wouldn’t be decision makers, all decisions made will affect them directly.

Social Media Bridges

The bridge between the professors and the students - the Teaching Assistantis going to be the working hand on the Instagram channel and hence makes up to be a key piece.

The key pieces which will tie all the links together - the faculty, students and the TAs is the Instagram handle / page which will be separate for all given courses.

Inferences From Interviews

Time

There is already so much going on with every professor taking at least 4 classes per quarter, learning and then keeping a new platform up to date will be a huge task.

Existing System

The combination of Blackboard and Outlook work extremely well for the professors as they have been acquainted and used to using them for years now.

Privacy

While it was made clear during the interview that this platform will strictly be used for professional purposes only, professors believe that this may make things informal.

Results Of Survey

Upon asking which platform did they use the most, almost 80% students mentioned that its Instagram.

Also notice that 10% use LinkedIn which probably means that they’re looking for a job. (This gave us an insight for our solution)

79.8% 10.5% Phase 2: Framing

Results Of Survey

As per our hypothesis, close to 80% students check their for notifications

Hence using Instagram as the channel will really help collaborate and connect and improve knowledge sharing beyond classrooms.

Proposed Bridge

As lots of SCAD students are constantly looking for on-campus job opportunities, we are proposing Appointment of Assistants who will act as Social Media Bridges between faculty and students.

Each faculty will have one student working under them for every course and the student can handle the entire social media for all the courses of the respective faculty.
