Inspiring Makeup Artists herself, can also be an interesting reading for our readers. Many of them may be induced to have the book. The feature on Keerti Joshi, the nail artist and nail educator from Mumbai, is one of the highlights of the issue. Her true story can inspire many a nail artist to give room to their passion for nails despite having a family and full time career.

I

n this issue, we have focused on some exceptional makeup artists. Some of them have carved their niche in the intensely competitive makeup business and some are on their way towards that goal. But all of them are riding confidently and with poise in the tortuous road to success with grit, determination and creativity as their priceless assets. One of the renowned makeup artists of India, Tamanna F Rooz is the subject of our Cover Story. Here we have briefly covered Tamanna’s illustrious career and also about her makeup academy, not only through an article written in third person but also through first person accounts of two of her students and two of her bridal makeover clients. Her work as an artist and a teacher can inspire many budding makeup artists to overcome their roadblocks and take the fight to success. An article about the research and background behind the Seema V Jerajani’s book Art of Indian Coiffures, written by the celebrated hairstylist

The article on pain management through Infrared Sauna will be helpful for not only the general readers but also the industry persons. The feature on summer skin care by none other than Shahnaz Husain is expected to disseminate important relevant information to our beauty conscious readers. Makeup MAsterclass by Atul Chauhan

D Events organised a one day makeup show & seminar by Atul Chauhan, the celebrity makeup artist, on 7th January 2020 at Arya Auditorium, East of Kailash, New Delhi. This show was the brainchild of Arun Chopra & Dharmendra Mishra. The event gave focus on pure makeup education by Atul Chauhan. He showcased three types of makeup looks. Atul Chauhan also shared with the audience international techniques with products knowledge. The event was attended by 350 professional makeup artists; mostly from North India. Komal Deep Kaur from Ludhiana who attended the event, was very excited about the entire session. She said, “Atul demonstrated incredibly well and it was an amazing experience. Cleansing and refreshing the skin assume more importance during summers for removing sweat and oil deposits. Impurities and pollutants tend to adhere to oily and sweaty skin. Overexposure to the Sun and chemical pollutants in the water and air can lead to Sun tan, Sun burn, skin sensitivity, heat rash, pimples and acne

kin fresheners and toners play a crucial role during summer, especially if it is hot and humid. They can help restore the normal balances, can keep the pores unclogged, can help stimulate blood circulation to the skin surface and can help keep the skin glowing. Ingredients like rose water, cucumber juice and water melon juice make good skin fresheners.

Rose water is one of the best known skin toners. Keep a small bowl of rose skin tonic or rose water, in the refrigerator. This way, it is chilled and ready for use. Wipe the skin several times a day with it. Use cotton wool dipped in chilled rose water as eye pads. It removes fatigue and is most refreshing. Use cleansers or face wash containing ingredients like tulsi or basil, neem or Indian lilac, sandalwood, lemon and aloe vera. Look for a matte moisturiser, or oil-free day cream in summer, especially for oily and combination skin. Protect the skin from Sun-effects by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen,

which provides protection from both UV-A and UV-B rays of the Sun. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before going out in the Sun, so as to give the skin enough time to absorb it. Apply it not only on the face, but also on all exposed 40 New Age Salon | FEBRUARY-MARCH 2020

areas, like the back of the neck and the arms. A sunscreen lotion of SPF 15 or 20 should do. Use high SPF of 40 if your skin is prone to pigmented patches or spots. Sun protection is also required while holidaying by the sea or swimming in


BEAUTY TIPS open pools. A sunscreen gel is more suitable for oily skin. For heat rash, pimples and acne, apply sandalwood paste, which has a cooling effect. Sandalwood helps to heal and soothe skin rashes, pimples, acne and boils. Mix sandalwood paste with a little rose water and then apply, as rose water is also a natural coolant. You can also apply paste of basil, neem or mint. They have antiseptic properties and also help to soothe rashy and eruptive conditions. Home ingredients can be used to exfoliate and brighten the skin, like ground almonds, oats, wheat bran or walnut powder. Cucumber or pumpkin seeds, or orange and lemon peels, or even mint can be dried and powdered and added to scrubs. Mix it with a liquid ingredient like water, rose water, orange juice, curd or milk. Rub the scrub gently on the skin and wash off with water. Cleansing the skin at night is of utmost importance; especially in summers, when impurities and pollutants tend to stick to sweaty skin. Cleansing helps to remove impurities. Use a cleanser according to skin type. Try coconut water to tone and soothe the skin in summers. It also helps to remove

tan and brighten the skin over a period of time. Apply on the skin and leave on for 20 to 30 minutes. Face packs can play a vital role in skin care by completing the cleansing process, dissolving impurities, softening dead skin cells, removing them and by adding a healthy glow. Clays like Fuller’s Earth

(multani mitti), have a cooling effect. Rose water is also a natural coolant. Mix one tablespoon of Fuller’s Earth with rose water. Apply the paste on the face and wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes, or when it is dry. Fruit packs can be applied daily and suit all skin types. Mix grated apples with ripe papaya pulp and mashed banana. Yogurt or lemon juice can be added to the mixture. Apply it on the face and leave it on for half an hour. Wash off with plain water. It can not only add a glow, but can also remove tan and softens the skin. Carry wet tissues in your handbag during the day to cleanse, wipe, cool and refresh the skin. Then use compact powder. Art of Indian Coiffures Two decades ago I had visited the Chennakeshava temple, a 12th century Vishnu temple in Belur, Karnataka. I vividly remember the tour guide showing us around the temple and explaining how each sculpture had a unique and different hairstyle. I was so inspired, we are not even aware of such hairstyles or trying to preserve this rich heritage.

In addition to my temple visits, I watched movies of the 1950s, like Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, Amrapali, Mughal-e-Azam and Navrang with a specific aim to discover hairstyles from different eras and had references from the Ajanta Ellora caves.

It was almost unreal and I couldn’t help but imagine how exquisite women must have looked back then. And if they could create these looks without any modern tools, equipment or products, that was a fascinating feat in itself. I created the cover page image with the inspiration from a sculpture at the Belur temple, replicating the hairstyle with the accessories. I was glad that I had picked up on some photography acumen to help me capture the details of these majestic hairstyles. Art of Indian Coiffures is a compilation of my decades of experience that will create a strong foundation and set a benchmark to empower and inspire hairstylists and make-up artists from all over the world to take time away from my teaching and commit to this extensive study. And since this was my first experience in not only writing a book, but researching, photographing and editing, it has been an overwhelming journey. Keerti Joshi is a nail artist and certified nail educator from Borivali, Mumbai, with a 27 year career in finance and marketing with public sector behind her. Ishita Paramanick is a young makeup artist from Kolkata, brimming with creative ideas. Her mother Abanti has been running a salon in Kolkata for more than 23 years now. Ishita got inspired by her mother and decided to have a career in beauty business. She likes to use her innovative ideas in beauty through makeup. The excerpts of her interview with New Age Salon follow: What induced you to enter the beauty business?

In my childhood, I liked to dress our neighbours’ children during cultural festivals and other events. Moreover, I love to do my makeup whenever I can spare some time for myself in my daily routine. Initially makeup was a hobby for me.

aby Deol became a model at a fashion show at the age of 15, which gave her media exposure. “I have been fascinated with arts, culture and designs since my childhood, and the glamour and shine of the beauty industry further attracted me to it,� affirmed Saby. ccording to Sadiya, she and her Co-founder, Darakhshan Husain and Feeroz Akhter long nursed a desire to start their own venture. “We were keen to do something for India’s beauty and wellness industry because as customers we always felt the need for quality salon services at affordable rates. But unfortunately, there was no brand operating in the budget segment in India’s salon business even though India’s beauty and wellness industry has been growing at a rapid pace,” explained Sadiya. The Glam Studios team saw a latent opportunity when they found that almost 97.5 percent of the salons in

India are unorganised. They also found that existing salons in India in the budget space were struggling to market themselves better, struggling to afford well-trained staff, to have access to sophisticated technologies, and to get better product discounts and training. According to Sadiya, “Glam Studios is India’s first and only salon brand till now in the affordable segment. The rest of the salon industry in India comprises either unorganised salons or brands operating in the luxury, premium or mass premium segment.” Glam Studios began in January 2016, with a seed capital of Rs. 30 lakhs and with

All these salon partners are franchised operations of Glam Studios. Their ambitious plan is to include 500 salons within their ambit by 2020-2021 and then keep doubling this number year on year to soon reach 10000 salons in 100 cities of India. Sadiya has a highly ambitious business vision too. “Our vision is to become the largest player globally in the salon space with a mission to make high quality grooming and beauty services available to the guys and girls next door across the world. When it comes to including existing salons within our brand ambit, we on board only those salons which pass our audit criteria for location, salon size and salon business. We also do an owner profiling and only sign up those salons as partners who can understand the longterm benefits of our business model and the advantage of tying up with a brand,” she explained. We are India’s first brand of technology-driven salons, and are the first player in the salon business in the country which came up with centralised call centre consultation and online bookings,” asserted Sadiya, the vibrant entrepreneur.

Of course, training is a crucial element in Glam Studios. “Training is provided at many different levels to our partners. Apart from training our partners on salon management and technical skills i.e. beauty, makeup and hair, we also provide continued training to all staff of salons within the brand of Glam Studios, on soft skills, personality development, sales and customer service. The cost of this training per employee is around Rs.100,000, but this is imparted free of cost,” Sadiya offered. Sadiya imparted pragmatic advice to aspirants entering or thinking of entering India's beauty industry. “India’s beauty industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the country that is doubling every three years. It gives her great pleasure that she motivated so many women to take makeup as a profession. “I have inspired so many women to enter into makeup business and they are now not only financially independent but are doing extremely well,” Prerna asserted with a tinge of satisfaction emanating from her voice. She describes inspiring women to succeed in the beauty industry as her greatest accomplishment in career. “I will continue to fulfill my vision and mission to empower and inspire more journey in makeup business has become extremely rewarding,” Prerna asserted. “Sometimes it can get very exhausting and there are times when it has taken a toll on my health,” Prerna said while talking of her demanding career. “There were times when I didn’t even get time for my family or for myself. But now l have started creating a balance,” she said. But she feels the hard work, the sacrifices for her career was totally worth it. Over the years, she had worked with some eminent clients in India and overseas. “I take a lot of inspiration from Wayne Goss and Charlotte Tilbury; world renowned makeup artists,” Prerna disclosed.
