ORIGIN OF ANKARA? Much is the acceptance of the new face of African fashion, That Every Material, Wax,and other Variable Clothing Thread Found on The body of an African is N because of the tribal-like patterns and motifs. Since it's ascension in global fashion, much talk has focused on whether or not African fabric is authentically African given the fact that the fabric was in fact originally made in Europe. Ankara was formerly known as Dutch wax print. It was originally manufactured by the Dutch for the Indonesian textile market. But, by mistake or design, these prints garnered significantly more interest in West African than in Indonesia. Recognizing this opportunity, the Dutch decided to focus on West Africa. As such, the prints changed to reflect African culture and lifestyle more. African print was henceforth born. Nowadays Ankara Is being manipulated by good tailors and has become a symbol of some African nations like Ghana. In the 2014 world cup, the Ankara material was tailored around the Ghanian national team jersey to symbolizeTheirrich culture. In the 19th century West Africans embraced these Dutch wax prints, using and assimilating them into societies as a part of culture and self-expression. The English were manufacturing and selling wax print textiles as well, but the Dutch brands were more popular. It has been suggested that the Dutch were viewed as the “wellmeaning” traders with West Africa, since a lot of West African nations were under English or French colonial rule.

Dutch wax prints carried, and still carry, an enormous amount of prestige and this was mostly likely due to their uniqueness as part of an European industry producing for export markets solely in West Africa. From the middle of the 20th century, though, more effort was made in making design motifs more authentic by using indigenous African textiles to create similar motifs. In the 1920s prints began to feature portraits of local community leaders and chiefs in their designs that people could buy in to celebrate their leaders. This tradition continued with portraits of African heads of states and prominent politicians used as design motifs starting in the 1950s. Designs and motifs that became extremely popular and successful were given catchy names, and they had proverbs and slogans attached to them by West Africans traders in their respective communities, even though these appellations had nothing in common with the designs on the fabrics. Due to this integration of Dutch wax prints, they are said to be “authentically African” even though they were produced and designed in Europe, presumably by Europeans with little or no African input in terms of designs and motifs at the production stages. Up until the 1960s, most wax prints sold in West Africa were being produced in Europe. Post-colonially, things changed. The Ankara Has a rich African history, who could have believed it wasn't born in Africa? Well I guess it is a citizen by association.

Warm up this winter with a touch of sixties nostalgia

C

ape Town, June 2014 Missibaba designer Chloe Townsend and creative partner Lizel Strydom launch a capsule collection usingautumnal inspired leathers sourced on South American travels. A true celebration of sixties inspired colour, the COLOUR BLOCK collection adds a pop of retro glamour to the dreary winter months. The use of on-trend dark navy leather to frame contrasting colours allows them to shine individually with a gold geometric edge. The introduction of exotic textures including patent, sheepskin, snake and crackled leather give the collection's clean aesthetic an alluring edge. The collection boasts two new bag styles and a new jewellery piece alongside iconic Missibaba styles. Pieces within the collection are in keeping with the COLOUR BLOCK theme –single colour panes broken into interesting shapes and framed in matte navy. The San Telmo Hold All is a unisex handheld carrier perfect for day or night. The bag is made ofrich walnut leather with handles and trims in Crazy Horse tan - a vegetable tan leather with hardwearing qualities that ages beautifully. The style is also available with the option of different colours and textures in the middle panel.

The Feria Clutch is a true festival of colour with the added benefit of thoughtful practicality. Credit card slots, room for essentials, a back zip pocket for valuables and quick, easy to open fastening make this piece a wardrobe necessity. The bag can be worn as a handheld clutch or over the shoulder as a small sling. The Daisy Chain is a double-sided neckpiece available in a variety of bold colourways with the reverse in navy vegetable tan. Attached to a long brass chain, the statement piece can be easily adjusted by the wearer to fit their desired length. Chloe and Lizel worked with photographer Lar Leslie on the dynamic COLOUR BLOCK campaign.Shot on Africa's Next Top Model runner up Opeyemi, the campaign brings the collection's retro Autumnal colour palette to life in an eye-catching and slightly offbeat way.

Angella lessons i have learnt in marriage that only experience have taught me are. 1) As a woman in marriage you should be patient, tactical and strong willed. .2) wise enough that there are some friends you need to stay far away from. hardworking enough to save yourself unnecessary financial drama.

Esther

(married for 3 years)

Patience. I'm an impulsive person, I always want to get things done ASAP in my own way but with marriage I had to learn how to slam the break and consider all parties involved. My husband and the kids. Patience is a virtue and a key tool in making a home work. That's the biggest lesson marriage has taught me so far.

Dupe (married for 25years)

My name is Mrs Dupe Adesina and I have been married for 25yrs. I learnt so many things through the years but the most important one is Commitment to God through daily prayers. it wasn't easy at the beginning until we learnt how to pray together with the help of the Bible. A couple that prays together stays together Another great lesson is saying 'sorry' to each other after hot arguments or squabbles. Even if I felt I was right and he was wrong, I would still ask for forgiveness the next day if he was still angry with me. The sooner we realise our mistakes n ask for forgiveness, the quicker we can move forward. Keeping malice wit each other would b sending wrong signals to the children.

Ankara?

Girls Chat

SUPERWOMAN

Superwoman is a colum that inspires women to do more and as such from time to time we interview women who are making positive impacts in our society so that others may draw inspiration from them.

Another lesson is training your kids with one voice. It wasn't nice for me as a young mom then to say our son must have a bicycle while his dad insisted it wasn't the right time, we must never allow the children to divide us. Any decision we want to make about them must have been made in their absence before giving the verdicts in their presence.

G

irls Chat is a creation of D Superwoman's Org were we ask ladies to share their personal experiences about different things that concerns us as women. Before we proceede, let me use this oppoutunituy to say a very big thank you to shakara360 magazine for giving us this coloum and oppurtunity. i also want to thank all our fans, who got in touuch with us as a result of this column, we wont let you down.

This edition of GIRLS CHAT is exciting, knowledgeable, loaded and very interesting. As a matter of fact it should be called WOMEN'S CHAT. In this edition, some married women give us insights on lessons they've learnt in marriage as a result of being married. Yeah, those lessons that you can't get from reading books or listening to tapes or even mama's speech but by personal experience. I have learnt so much from every woman who has shared her experience with us today and I know you will too.

Couples should also learn how to compliment each other often and often, like saying 'I love you' and 'you look great',these makes the marriage stronger and stronger . Its also good to share same bed every-night even though you have different rooms. After a hard day's job,u both get home, shower and take your dinner, its good to retire to the same bed where you can share your experiences at work and also discuss about the home affairs until sleep takes its toll on you. Sharing different rooms can gradually destroy a marriage. Sleeping in same room and same bed connects us better, its not always about sex... To keep a marriage stronger, couples should go on regular dates, creating time for fun has helped a lot. So many things I have learnt but as I earlier said Put God first and train your children in the way of God so they can be useful to God, you and the society.

Lastly in this computer age,we should not allow our desktops, laptops, phones or any gadgets to create a gap between us and our spouses, we should log out of all social networks to have time for our partners, we should stop receiving unnecessary calls either from colleagues or friends. When your at Home ,give your time hundred percent to your partner unless there are pending office works to complete. Thanks for taking time to read/listen .

Spring Collection

Ankara? ...Sarah Christian Clothing

This collection plays with the rhythm of colour. The tie and dye fabrics play with the illusion of playful splashes of colour. The colours of this collection tie in with the season of spring; the birth of many new colours just after the bleak and dreary winter. "Rinascita" is the italian word for 'rebirth'. This Spring collection symbolises the rebirth of youthfulness, freshness and life. This collection makes that spirit of Spring come alive. The lady wearing these clothes is proud of who she is. She has a vibrant spirit and is not afraid to let it show. Every piece shows different individuals with one spirit. She is always bold and loves the innocence of simplicity and elegance. She is The Sarah Christian woman.
