2022 Senior Orchestra Bios Nichele Abeyesundere has been playing the cello for 10 years and is a 4-year member of the Chamber Orchestra cello section. Nichele serves as the experiment coordinator of STEM Ambassadors and the president of the Math Club. Nichele has also conducted biomedical and public health research at Case Western Reserve University. In the Fall, Nichele will attend the University of Notre Dame to major in neuroscience on the pre-med track. K Armstrong has been a member of the Shaker Orchestras since the 5th grade and is also a member of the Shaker Choirs. K started in Honors choir in 8th grade with Ms. Sharpe and then was in Mixed A Capella with Mr. Clopton-Zymler freshman year. From sophomore through senior years, K has been a member of Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Clopton-Zymler and Mr. LaPete. In the Fall, K will attend the University of Dayton to major in Music Therapy. Catherine Bachovchin is a 4-year member of the Chamber Orchestra viola section. Catherine has also performed with COYO as well as different chamber music groups. Catherine is an IB Diploma Programme student and is on the swimming and rowing teams. In the Fall, Catherine will attend the University of Kansas on a rowing scholarship. The highlight of Catherine’s Shaker music career was performing with Chamber Orchestra at Lincoln Center. Will Berick joined String Orchestra as a beginning upright bass player two years ago. Will performs as first chair trumpet in the Wind Ensemble and also plays piano and guitar. Will is also a varsity swimmer as well as a varsity baseball player. Next year, Will plans to study music composition at Carnegie Mellon University.

2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Magdalena Bowne is a 4-year member of the Chamber Orchestra cello section. Magdalena traveled with the Chamber Orchestra in 2020 to New York City, where the group won the 2nd runner up prize in the National Orchestra Cup. Magdalena also performed with the Shaker Orchestras in Spain. Delilah Burton has been a member of the Shaker Orchestras since 5th grade and is a 2-year member of Chamber Orchestra. Delilah is an IB Diploma Programme Student, a Raiderette, and a swimmer. In the Fall, Delilah will attend the University of Cincinnati. A highlight of Delilah’s musical experience at Shaker would be sharing music with people in Spain. Adam Diaz has played bass in the Shaker Orchestras since 7th grade. Next year, Adam will attend and play football at Kennesaw State University as a full ride scholarship recipient. Inaemi Doibo has played cello in the Shaker Orchestras throughout high school and is currently a member of Chamber Orchestra cello section. Inaemi also participated in NHD and SAY Club. Inaemi will attend college to study communications and plans to continue playing the cello. Beau Gingerich has been involved in the Shaker Orchestras for about 6 years and is a member of the String orchestra 1st violin section. After graduation, Beau plans to join the Navy. Sam Grube has been a member of the Shaker orchestra program for 8 years and is a 3-year member of the Chamber Orchestra cello section. During high school, Sam helped to mentor young string players through the Big Brothers and Sisters orchestra program at Woodbury. Sam is an honor roll student, a commended National Merit Scholar, and captain of the swim team. This Fall, Sam will be attending the University of Chicago. Highlights of Sam’s time in orchestra were definitely the New York trip, the Spain trip, and 6
2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Cake Day. Annika Gulani has been a member of the Shaker Orchestras since the 5th grade. Annika has participated in many arts programs at Shaker, including photography and ceramics, and is a one time silver medalist and a two time gold medalist for the National German Exam. This Fall, Annika will attend Michigan State University for elementary education. Some of Annika’s favorite things about orchestra have been the community and people they have gotten to meet. Annika also really enjoyed getting the opportunity to go to Spain, and of course, Cake Day! Kai Hairston has been playing violin in the Shaker Orchestras since the 5th grade. Highlights of Kai’s orchestra career have included participating in Music in the Parks and doing well on playing tests. Kai is considering taking a gap year after graduation. Kai has enjoyed being a part of the orchestra for so long and having Ms. Jelen as an amazing teacher. :) Annestelle Hipwell is a 4-year member of the Chamber Orchestra violin section, the recipient of a performing arts scholarship for violin from Rochester Institute of Technology, and a selftaught guitarist. Annestelle also played rugby at Shaker for two years. This Fall, Annestelle will attend the Rochester Institute of Technology to major in advertising and public relations. Annestelle also plans to perform in their chamber orchestra and play on their women’s rugby team. Highlights of Annestelle’s Shaker music career include winning 3rd place in the National Orchestra Cup with Chamber Orchestra as well as performing in Spain.

2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Carmen Joachimsmeyer-Gordon has been in the Shaker Orchestras for 7 years and has performed with the Woodbury Orchestra, Middle School Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra. They also played violin in the Spring 2022 musical Barnum. They have received several awards for their acting, including an award for Best Actor in the 2020-21 school year for the High School and a Performing Arts scholarship for acting. In addition to their acting awards, they have also received multiple high regional awards in the Scholastics Art and Writing Competition for five years straight. In addition, they participated in the recent showing of the High School’s Dance Club.They are an IB Diploma Programme student. They have participated in several extracurricular art courses at the Cleveland Institute of Art, including several mock college courses there. They will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology for 3D Digital Design in Fall 2022. They have received several merit scholarships there, including a Performing Arts scholarship for acting. They plan to continue their involvement in music, theater, dance, and art throughout college and beyond. In their sophomore year, they accompanied the Chamber Orchestra to the Orchestra Cup in New York City, mere days before the world shut down. They also participated in the trip to Spain, where they greatly enjoyed seeing the sights. They are very interested in science, especially astronomy and biology, and are glad that their higher education will allow them to pursue these interests. If they’re not drawing, writing, playing music, acting out scenarios as their characters or as existing characters, or researching a very specific topic for character creation, they can be found playing with their cats, playing with, and streaming games for friends. Alex Markland performed with String Orchestra for two years and with Chamber Orchestra for one year. Alex has been playing the violin since 2nd grade. In the Fall, Alex will attend the College of Wooster and will perform with their orchestra as a recipient of a violin scholarship. 8
2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Avery Maytin is a 4-year member of Chamber Orchestra and a 3-year member of COYO. Avery has studied cello with Pam Kelly for 10 years and has been a member of the Shaker swim team for 4 years. In the Fall, Avery will attend Brown University to study biology or chemistry with plans to be pre-med. The highlight of Avery’s Shaker music career was visiting Spain. Sanaa Miller has played the cello in the Shaker Orchestra since the 5th grade and has served as Principal Cello of String Orchestra. Sanaa has participated in SGORR, Global Friendship Club, and SAY club in order to help promote a better understanding among people. Sanaa will attend The Ohio State University as a full scholarship student and is also the recipient of numerous outside scholarships. Sanaa will major in animal science and plans to become a veterinarian. Sanaa always tries to put forth their best effort in orchestra despite being tired or in pain due to sickle cell anemia. With Ms. Jelen’s help, Sanaa is pleased to have developed advanced skills on the cello (such as shifting and vibrato). Lain Patton moved to Shaker Heights at age 12. Lain has been playing cello for 9 years and has been part of the Shaker Orchestra program for nearly 6 years, during which time they were a counselor during the Shaker Orchestra summer camp and enjoyed helping the younger cellists. Lain is also one of the pioneers of the Shaker girl’s rugby team and has been playing rugby for 3 years. In the Fall, Lain will attend the College of Wooster and major in biochemistry as a pre-med student. Lain hopes to be a pediatric adolescent gynecologist. Derich Plaxico is a 4-year member of the Chamber Orchestra viola section and performed with the Mentor Schools orchestras prior to that. Derich participated in Shaker’s Theatre program as an actor in productions such as Macbeth, New Stages 38, and Rent. Derich plans to attend community college in order to transfer credits to another school to study music education! Derich enjoyed being in orchestra class and hearing all of 9Ms. Jelen’s stories and advice.
2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Amelia Proweller is a 4-year member of Chamber Orchestra. Amelia also played clarinet in middle school, has been a part of CYO for 5 years, and has been awarded yearly merit scholarships to pursue music lessons at the Music Settlement. Amelia has been a swimmer for both Shaker Heights HS and the Shaker swimming club team and has run cross country all four years of high school, serving as a senior captain. Amelia has also served as Secretary for Mano en Mano and helped to organize the Pulsera project at the high school. Amelia has also earned the distinction of AP scholar with honors. Amelia plans to attend a small liberal arts college to study Black history, Spanish, and Hispanic studies. The highlight of Amelia’s experience at Shaker was being able to perform in New York and in Spain with friends. Amelia loves partaking in cello sectionals and icebreaker sessions. Amelia always looks forward to orchestra and the positive and exciting environment it provides. Amelia also loves to hang out with friends and family, go on adventures, listen to music, read, and play music with their sister Talia. Talia Proweller is a 4-year member of Chamber Orchestra, where she serves as Principal Viola. Talia is also a pianist, a former member of CYO, and a current member of COYO. Talia is also a Shaker swimmer. In the Fall, Talia will attend the University of Rochester. Sophia Rose has performed for two years with String orchestra and one year with Chamber Orchestra. Sophia earned a scholarship for lessons at the Music Settlement for three years. Sophia also plays guitar and bass guitar and is president of the Science Olympiad and a member of STEM Ambassadors. This Fall, Sophie will study Neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University. The highlight of Sophia’s Shaker musical career was the trip to Spain.

2022 Senior Orchestra Bios cont. Katie Rusnak has been playing violin in the Shaker Orchestras since Woodbury and actually started out on the viola. Katie is a CORE leader in SGORR, co-captain of the women’s tennis team, a copy chief for the Shakerite, and a member of student council. In the Fall, Katie will attend the College of William and Mary to pursue a master’s in education and also study policy and organizational leadership. Eva Xiao is a 4-year member of Chamber Orchestra and serves as Principal 2nd Violin. Eva began playing violin at age 7 and enjoys taking private lessons. Eva also played the flute from 3rd through 8th grade and participated in the Shaker Bands until high school. Evan has run cross country and track throughout high school and was a team captain for both of those teams this year. Academically, Eva was a National Merit Finalist. In the Fall, Eva will study neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh as a merit scholarship recipient. Eva likes to bake and has LOVED Ms. Jelen’s Cake Days. :)
