Emily Boron has been involved in the Shaker Orchestras since Woodbury. Emily has been performed with CODA (Community Outreach of Devoted Artists) and COYO (Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra) for the past two years and was also in the Preparatory Orchestra at the Cleveland Institute of Music in middle school. Emily is co-consul of the SHHS Latin Club and recently won the 1st overall Academic Sweepstakes at the Ohio Junior Classical League convention as well as 1st place in Roman Life and 2nd place in Latin Prose Reading Comprehension at the National Latin Convention. Emily plays on Shaker’s varsity softball team and holds a black belt in Taekwondo. In the Fall, Emily will attend Brown University to study classics and biochemistry as well as anthropology and linguistics along with Latin, Chinese, Italian, and Polish. Emily also plans to join the Brown University Orchestra and Brown’s Chamber Music program and wants to start a club softball team at Brown and practice Taekwondo there. Emily can solve a Rubik’s cube in 13 seconds and enjoys playing the ukulele.
Dennis Brown joined the Shaker Heights String Orchestra this year. Dennis joined band in 5th grade as a clarinetist, switched to bass clarinet in 8th grade, and still plays both clarinet and bass clarinet for Symphonic Band, the high school’s second top band. Dennis also plays guitar, bass guitar, and piano. Dennis also sings and was featured this year in Sankofa as a bass guitarist, pianist, and singer. In marching band, Dennis has climbed their way to the top, from a beginner in ninth grade to squad leader their junior year and this year a field commander, one of four student leaders of the marching band. Dennis has performed in the pit orchestra for two musicals at Shaker: Barnum and SpongeBob. For these productions, Dennis doubled on Clarinet and Bass Clarinet. Dennis has been accepted into Cleveland State University and successfully auditioned into their school of music to pursue a degree in music education. The highlight of Dennis’s musical career at Shaker was being able to travel and perform in France with the marching band, specifically at the Eiffel Tower. It was a

very emotional performance for Dennis, due to it being their final marching band performance, but they are extremely grateful for being given the opportunity.
Liat Browner has been involved in the Shaker Orchestras throughout high school as a member of String and Chamber Orchestra. Liat has also been involved in the Israeli Culture Club and the Fiber Club and has volunteered for the past six years at Friendship Circle, an organization that connects Jewish teens with kids with disabilities. Liat is also excited to be interning at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court for Senior Project. Next year, Liat will attend the University at Buffalo Honors College as a Provost Scholarship recipient. They are undecided about their major but are interested in studying social work and/or public interest law and also in studying abroad in China. One of the highlights of high school for Liat was the Spain orchestra trip! Liat says that especially after Covid, it was so fun to be with friends and to be playing music all together again.
Laila Christian joined the Shaker Orchestras in fifth grade and has continued in them ever since. In high school, Laila played in String Orchestra for one year and has been a Chamber Orchestra member for three years. Laila mainly sings and is heavily involved in Shaker’s Theatre Arts Department, in which they played Sandy Cheeks in this year’s production of SpongeBob. Laila also wrote and composed a musical called Stakeout for this year’s New Stages 41. Additionally, Laila went to nationals for their National History Day documentary sophomore year. This Fall, Laila will attend Ohio University to major in BFA film and will use their time away from home to discover what they really want, whether it be an actress in musical theatre, a film scorer, or a screenwriter. Laila would like to thank Ms. Jelen for advising and believing in them throughout their time in orchestra. :)

Katie Escobedo has been playing the violin in the Shaker Orchestras since 5th grade. As of last year, Katie has found more interest in music than ever. Due to this newfound passion for music, Katie has picked up piano and taught themself how to play all sorts of musical pieces from all composers. This fall, Katie plans to attend The Ohio State University in hopes of becoming a doctor one day.
William Gainford has played the violin in the Shaker Orchestras since 5th grade. Over the years, Will always appreciated that the orchestra teachers were patient and kind because that helped build confidence. Now Will feels like a confident novice in the world of music and will always be grateful for having this as part of their education. This fall, Will plans to attend Baldwin Wallace University. Sadly, they won’t be studying music there, but they hope to have more opportunities to play in the future. The Spain trip was memorable for Will because they were able to visit many beautiful places and forge unique friendships. This is another experience for which Will is very grateful.
Tomas Halldorsson started violin in 5th grade at Woodbury. In 9th grade, Tomas lived and studied violin and music theory in Iceland, during which time they greatly improved their playing to the point where they were able to join Chamber their sophomore year. Tomas is on the SHHS Esports team and will compete this weekend as captain of the Rocket League team. Tomas has committed to University of Miami and will major in Computer Science. After college, Tomas wants to move back to Iceland. Tomas really enjoys outdoor activities like biking and playing soccer and plans to continue playing soccer at the intramural level in college.
Hannah Hanley has been playing violin in the Shaker Orchestra program since 5th grade. For four years, Hannah took private violin lessons outside of school and performed in solo recitals at the end of each year and has recently been trying to learn how

to play the guitar and piano. Hannah played on the field hockey team for all four years of high school and made it onto varsity for junior and senior years, both years in which the team made it into the final four state championship. Also, Hannah has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. Next year, Hannah will attend Kent State University and major in English and has thought about joining the Kent State Orchestra for at least one year. One of Hannah’s favorite parts of their Shaker musical career was going to Spain and being able to play for people in another country.
Anna Helwig has been involved in the Shaker Orchestra program since fifth grade and participated in both String and Chamber Orchestra at the high school. Anna first began cello lessons through the Music Settlement, where they still take lessons as well as music theory and group cello classes! In high school, Anna has worked as an assistant art teacher in Montessori classrooms, participated in clubs such as Mock Trial, and has been a part of the crew team. Next year, Anna will attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They have not yet declared a major but are leaning toward history. Anna has always loved being a part of the orchestra program at Shaker. Ever since they started out at Woodbury, orchestra has provided them with so many opportunities, and they have met so many talented people along the way.
Lizzy Huang has been involved in the Shaker Orchestras since middle school. Lizzy is a member of the Cleveland Institute of Music’s prestigious Young Artists’ Program and will perform with Meraki (a string trio from the CIM YAP) at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition this May. Lizzy created a nonprofit organization called Youth Bridging Through Arts (youthbridgingthrougharts.org) that aims to bring access to the music community to people from all backgrounds by working with musicians in the greater Cleveland area. Youth Bridging Through Arts has done outreach work at VA hospital, Unitarian Congregationalist Church in Cleveland, the Fairfax location of

After-School All Stars (where the group does music activities with the kids), Shaker elementary schools, and many other places. This fall, Lizzy will attend Harvard College and tentatively plans to focus in music and cognitive neuroscience. Lizzy enjoys chess and reading and considers their involvement with the Shaker Theatre Arts department (as a violinist in the pit orchestras of SpongeBob and Barnum and also as an onstage musician in Cyrano de Bergerac) to be some highlights of their time at Shaker.
Ashlyn Inouye has been playing the cello for around eight years and has played in the Shaker orchestra since moving here in 8th grade. Despite the fact that around two of those years were spent online and not in-person, Ashlyn still loved getting to play with other instruments and learn amazing pieces of music. Recently, Ashlyn won a competitive Music Scholarship for their chosen college, taking $6000 off of my tuition as they continue taking lessons and playing in orchestral groups in college. In addition to orchestra, Ashlyn takes private lessons with Julie King while also taking dance lessons for pointe, ballet, and musical theater at Cleveland City Dance. Ashlyn is also an IB Diploma Programme student and a Girl Scout Ambassador who helps with their little sisters’ troop. Next year, Ashlyn will attend Willamette University in Salem, Oregon with scholarships in music and academics. Ashlyn still remembers how amazing it felt to finally be playing together in person as an orchestra again after online schooling because being able to create music as a group and have this shared experience is really special. Ashlyn says that Ms. Jelen has been a huge part of their “Shaker musical career” by making Orchestra a bright spot in the day with fun music, classes, cake days, concerts, and trips that will always be cherished; additionally, Ashlyn notes that the class does seem to be doing something right in their playing, as the cellos won “Best Section” at competition recently :)
Jonathan Jacques is the Principal Bass of the SHHS Chamber Orchestra as well as COYO (the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra). Jon has served as the co-president of CODA for two

years, has tutored young orchestra students at Woodbury and SMS, and studies piano. An IB Diploma Programme candidate, Jon will attend Emory University as a recipient of a half-tuition liberal arts scholarship and double major in music and biology (pre-med). Ultimately, Jon plans to go into medicine.
Rayne James has performed with the Shaker Orchestras throughout high school in both String and Chamber Orchestra. As a Senior, Rayne was part of the cello section that won Best Section at the 2023 National Orchestra Cup along with the overall 2nd-runner up prize for the whole orchestra. Since Middle School, Rayne has frequently contributed to the Shaker Orchestras as a percussionist. Rayne is a captain of the football team, a KAP photographer, a SGORR leader, and a four-year Honor Roll member. In the Fall, Rayne will attend Wittenberg University on an academic and football scholarship to study journalism and communications and plans to transfer to the Ohio State University as they continue their studies. Rayne plans to become a photo journalist, sports broadcaster, or sports commentator. Rayne has enjoyed their years of playing cello, citing it as a significant part of their identity and who they are as a Shaker student. Rayne believes that if they had never had the chance to learn cello, their life and experiences would be completely different. Rayne would like to thank Ms. Jelen for the experience and for being one of the best teachers in the Shaker Schools.
Asha Jha is a four-year member of the Chamber Orchestra and is proud to have participated in two award-winning trips to the National Orchestra Cup. Asha studies violin at the Music Settlement, where they have been awarded merit scholarships (2018-2022) as well as awards for excellence in violin every year. Asha has volunteered at Music Settlement performances and summer camps and performed with their advanced orchestra (the Amati Chamber Orchestra) as well as with a quintet from this group called Arcos. Asha served as a paid intern for Case Western Reserve University’s Scientific Enrichment Opportunity/Youth

Engaged in Science program, where they worked in the Pathology Department of Dr. Stanley Huang’s lab on examining the effect of genetic knockdown of Delta-aminolevulinate Synthase 1 (ALAS 1) in macrophage polarization. Asha has also volunteered at University Hospital’s Radiation Oncology department and for the Red Cross. Asha plans to study on a pre-med track in college, majoring in either biology or biochemistry, in pursuit of their lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. Asha writes this to the Shaker Orchestras: “From the bottom of my heart, I say, thank you. Thank you for choosing me to be one of the students to be a part of this community, and expand my horizons in classical music. I feel honored to have received this assistance, and this thoughtfulness helps me grow and improve my skills as a violinist. Playing the violin has always seemed to be amazing when I was younger, and where I am now, wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for my family and my teachers. This passion has helped me when I needed to calm down, or just relax. I even strum my fingers on air sometimes when thinking about the beat of a certain piece! It has helped me connect with myself more and continue to help me grow as both a musician, and as a person. These past four years helped me learn to appreciate others and be aware of the actions going on behind the scenes. So, once again, thank you, I greatly appreciate what you’ve done.”
Harrison Lauritsen has been a member of the Shaker Orchestras for two years, during which time they served as the Concertmaster of String Orchestra and also traveled to Spain and New York. Harrison also played in the Cleveland Pops Youth Orchestra and the Amati Orchestras at the Music Settlement and played trombone in the band for 5 years. Harrison also plays rugby and football, works for a handyman, is an Eagle Scout, and enjoys camping. This Fall, Harrison will attend Auburn University to major in building science so they can start a career in construction management.

Nadiyah Marshall has been in the Shaker Orchestra since fifth grade and joined the Chamber Orchestra at the beginning of their senior year. Nadiyah was nominated to join the national Society of High School Scholars and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Nadiyah was also awarded a full ride to Cuyahoga Community College, and although they are already a college freshman, they plan to continue their studies for an associate degree to become a dental hygienist. Nadiyah enjoys swimming, traveling, watching movies, and going for walks with their dog Bear, as well as spending time with their family, especially brothers Auggie, Fitz, and Grey.
Mariaeleonora Milella joined the Shaker Orchestras this year as an exchange student from Italy and enjoyed winning 3rd place in the Orchestra Cup in their hometown! Nora has a 4.5 GPA both here and in Italy and is fluent in 2 languages: Italian and English. Up next for Nora is graduating from Italian High School and then trying the med school test to become a gynecologist. Nora plays the harp, the piano, and is a hammock aerialist, which means that they spend most of their time off the ground, on the silks!
Elliot Miller has played violin in the Shaker Orchestras for seven years. In addition to their work on violin, Elliot has also sung/ performed vocally with the orchestra (“My Shot” from Hamilton) and has introduced pieces to the audience, though the biggest honor has been playing with friends and learning from the orchestra teachers. An IB Diploma Programme student, Elliot has been on the Honor Roll all four years of high school and has won some Mac Scholar awards. Just last month, Elliot did their first acting performance as part of New Stages 41. In the Fall, Elliot will attend the Ohio State University to study art with an emphasis on animation and may dabble in acting/voice acting. Elliot would like to thank their parents, sister Sanaa, best friend and orchestra partner Hannah (Triple H) Hanley, their significant other, and all the other people who have accompanied them on their journey. Elliot hopes you all enjoy tonight’s concert.

Nico Moulthrop has performed with the Shaker Orchestras since Woodbury and switched from violin to viola this past year. Nico began violin at age 6 and studied piano from ages 4-10. They have studied viola for one year and perform with both the Kaboom Collective and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. Nico also performs for weddings and other events, so let them know if you need music for a special occasion! Nico is an IB Diploma Programme student and climbs at Shaker Rocks. In the fall, Nico plans to study viola and chemistry in the Ohio State University honors college as a Maximus scholarship recipient. Highlights of Nico’s musical life have been appearing on the album Reimagined (with Kaboom Collective and The Accidentals), learning cello for Senior Project, and learning new instruments. As a freshman, Nico looked up to all the seniors in the front of their sections and is proud to fill that same role now that they are a senior.
Maria Pitas is a four-year member of Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the Shaker Orchestras starting in the fifth grade. Maria also sings in the Cleveland Institute of Music Chamber Choir and has been awarded a Scholastic Silver Key for their art. Maria is signed with two agencies and will graduate with at least a 4.0 GPA despite the experience of the pandemic. Up next for Maria is a gap year in which they plan to paint, sketch, draw, doodle, and make art any way they can. Maria has a huge interest in urban planning. The highlights of their Shaker music career include both the 2020 and 2023 Orchestra Cup competitions as well as the amazing trip to Spain.
James Rhodes is a four-year member of Chamber Orchestra. James went to New York with the orchestra freshman year and Spain last year. After graduation, James plans to go on a 2 year service mission for their church before going to college for engineering. James counts their two orchestra trips as the top highlights of their Shaker musical career.

Chris’Shawn Robinson has been a violinist in the Shaker Orchestras for 6 years. Chris’Shawn created many different songs throughout their four years of high school thanks to the help they received in orchestra in how music should be made. Chris’Shawn joined the Say Club to help people in our school with mental health and created shirts with their art to also spread mental health awareness. After graduation, Chris’Shawn plans to create their art business and take a gap year to help their family while taking steps toward their own financial independence. Playing the violin has always been something Chris’Shawn admired, and as much as they wanted to give up playing, their teachers have always made it fun, enjoyable, and interesting to the point where they did not care about how they played but for what they were playing for. Being in orchestra taught Chris’Shawn the qualities of music, the connections it can create with not only the listeners but the people playing it alongside you, and most of all the efforts it took to make it this far.
Angel Rosales has been involved with the Shaker Orchestra program since the fifth grade, which means they’ve been playing viola for almost half their life! Angel is proud to share that in addition to playing viola, they sang twice in their church choir. Angel also played soccer for five years at Shaker and is on the merit roll. In the fall, Angel will attend the Ohio State University to major in health sciences and then plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. One of Angel’s favorite memories of orchestra was performing for the elementary school students and seeing the amount of joy that performance brought to the kids. In their spare time, Angel is an avid fan of sports and sleep.
Del Sanders has been a part of the Shaker Orchestras since fifth grade. When they got the chance to try instruments at Lomond and they played the violin, they felt that it was the instrument for them. They had previously not tried the violin, but it awakened their “musical” side and made them want to try everything else. Now Del also plays guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard and
14
2023 Senior Orchestra Bios cont.
has made songs using their skills on those instruments. They also enjoy covering their favorite rock songs and look forward to making other and even better songs due to their growing knowledge of music theory. Del wants to become a game designer and is interested in computers in general, so they plan to study computer science in college. Del is especially grateful for the chance to study music theory in high school. Though it was difficult at first and they thought they would never get it, everything now seems much easier and more intuitive. Del now analyzes regular songs and is able to predict where each song will go based on what chord is playing. They never thought of music that way before, but now when they hear backup singers and a band of instruments playing, they single out each note and think of what the Roman numeral would be based on what sounds like scale degree one.
Kaia Sharma has been in the Shaker Orchestras for eight years, having played violin from 5th through 7th grade before switching to cello. The moment Kaia got principal chair for the first time was such a big accomplishment because they had always wanted to be principal, even if just for one concert. Kaia is also proud to be attending college on a rowing scholarship, as they have wanted to row in college since their junior year. In the fall, Kaia will attend the University of Dayton as a rowing commit majoring in Health Sciences. Kaia plans to continue playing the cello in college. One of Kaia’s favorite orchestra memories was the Spain trip. It was their second time going out of the country ever and was such a fun and enjoyable experience.
Ryan Stewart has been playing violin in the Shaker Orchestras since the fifth grade as a part of String Orchestra (freshman year) and Chamber Orchestra (sophomore through senior years). Ryan also plays piano and guitar and at one time played percussion. This fall, Ryan will attend the University of Miami in Ohio to major in computer science.

Nora von der Heydt has performed with the Shaker Orchestras since middle school and is also a singer with a special interest in early and Anglican choral music. Nora sings in several groups throughout the region, including Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, Trinity Cathedral Choir, St. Paul’s Youth Choirs, the Academy choirs at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Case Early Music Singers, and the Cleveland Opera Theater. Additionally, Nora is an IB Diploma Programme candidate. Nora plans to attend the Culinary School at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City and then attend the University of Toronto.
Veronika Weyer has performed in the Chamber Orchestra since moving to Shaker Heights from Germany two years ago. Veronika has also played softball for Shaker the past two years and is in the IB program. Veronika plans to return to Germany or Austria to study mechanical engineering/management. Because the application deadlines are in late summer/early fall, they don’t yet know where they will enroll, but they are looking at going to school in Vienna. Veronika’s interest in mechanical engineering began when they watched documentaries about airplane crashes and other incidents.
Ruth Wilson joined the Shaker Orchestras in middle school and is a four year member of Chamber Orchestra. Ruth has taken cello lessons and performed solo recitals for over ten years. Ruth has also played varsity tennis for all four years at SHHS and was captain this year in addition to being a four-year member of SGORR. This fall, Ruth will attend Skidmore College and will perform with their orchestra. Ruth’s Shaker orchestra highlights include two award-winning trips to the National Orchestra Cup competition in New York City and winning Best Section award this year. Ruth also enjoyed making music with amazing people (much love to stand partner Matthew, especially for playing with a broken thumb in NYC) and Cake Day (obviously). Ruth would

like to thank Ms. Jelen for being an amazing teacher, role model, friend, and inspiration.
Jacob Zeng has been playing cello with the Shaker Orchestras since the 5th grade and is a three-year member of Chamber Orchestra. Jacob has also been playing piano since age six. This March, Jacob traveled with the Chamber Orchestra to the National Orchestra Cup competition in New York City and helped the group take home the 2nd runner up prize as well as the award for Best Section.
Helen Zhu joined the Shaker Orchestras in fifth grade and has received the Merit Scholarship from the Music Settlement two years in a row. Helen was a rhythmic gymnast for five years (up until Level 7) and won 3rd Place in regionals. Helen has been dancing for 15 years and has been on the dance team for Studio J Academy of Dance for 4 years. Helen’s group dances and studio have won multiple awards at competitions such as TIA, Starbound, On Pointe, Groove, and more. Additionally, Helen has won multiple Special Judges Awards for their solos. Most recently at Groove, Helen’s trio won 1st place in category and 2nd overall while Helen won a scholarship, 3rd in category, 6th overall, and the highest score from the studio for their solo. This Fall, Helen will attend Case Western Reserve University as an Honorary University Scholar. Helen hopes to continue doing some form of dance in college and would also like to study abroad and travel more. Helen’s highlights from Shaker Orchestra include two trips to New York and one trip to Spain.
