Program Notes
Plaza de Toros
A “Plaza de Toros” is an arena where bullfights take place. As the bullfighters enter the stadium, they are usually accompanied by Spanish marches such as this one. Referred to as a paso doble, it literally means “double step”.
Above and Beyond
The start of every concert brings about a tremendous feeling of anticipation for what is about to occur. In just a matter of moments, the first notes will resonate throughout the hall and our musical journey will have begun. Above and Beyond is a triumphant fanfare that reflects the unique connection between composer, conductor, ensemble and you, the listening audience. While a musical selection lasts a relatively short amount of time, the emotional highs that touch the human spirit through an exciting performance will hopefully endure forever.
Aquia Landing
Aquia Landing is located at the confluence of Aquia creek and the Potamac river in Stafford County, Virginia. A pivotal transportation point between the southern states and northern ports, passengers, cargo and entire rail cars were transferred from RF&P Railroad to steamboat vessels which carried them from Aquia creek up the Potamac river to Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland. This key location also positioned Aquia Landing as a major gateway along the “Network to Freedom” through which fugitive slaves had to pass in order to reach freedom.
Achilles’ Wrath
The creative inspiration for this piece lies in the opening lines of Alexander Pope’s translation of The Illiad: “Achilles’ wrath, to Greece and the direful of / Of woes unnumber’d, heavenly goddess, sing!” The story tells of interfering gods, brave warriors, and bloody battles when the mighty Greeks fight for Helen of Troy. This piece of music is a unique retelling of an age-old tale of Achilles’ wrath, vengeance and heroic deeds.

Has your band student outgrown his/her concert attire? Consider donating clean and gently used white shirts, black pants, black skirts or black shoes to the band program. The band directors maintain a supply of these items for emergency use by SMS and Woodbury band members. If you would like to donate concert attire, simply send it to one of the band directors with your student.
