Program Notes
Night Ride of the Cossacks combines two Russian folksongs, “Cossack Lullaby” and “Cossack Patrol” (also known as “Meadowlands”), to portray the drama and excitement of the horsemen known as the Cossacks. These famous mounted communities lived in Ukraine and Southern Russia and were known for their bravery, colorful dress and skill as horsemen. The name “Cossack” is thought to refer to a people who were outside of society and therefore made their homes on the remote steppes of Russia.
Escape from the Deep tells the true story of the U.S. Navy submarine Tang and the events that took place in October 1944. Tang was a legendary sub, having sunk more enemy ships, rescued more downed airmen and successfully executed more dangerous surface attacks than any other Allied submarine in the Pacific. It was on its fifth patrol when disaster struck.
Tang fired what would be its last torpedo. The torpedo began on target, but suddenly malfunctioned and turned back toward the Tang. Ultimately, it hit with incredible force. Those who survived the blast sunk to the bottom of the ocean 180 feet beneath the surface, while enemies dropped depth charges from above.
Five men were able to make the daring ascent through the escape trunk, which entailed climbing into a small space and flooding it with water to equal the outside pressure. They were joined by four other men who were thrown from the bridge and managed to tread water for over eight hours. It is a story of triumph amidst incredible tragedy.
Reese’s Summer Day from the composer: “Part of my life’s journey as a composer has included the “Children’s Dances”, and now, in the past several years, it has become rather necessary that I move on to the next generation. In 2005, I wrote ‘Kaylen Dreaming’ for my first granddaughter, and now it’s time for several more movements to be added to the ‘Grandkid Suite’.
My second grand daughter is Jacquelyn Reese and she is, above all other things, a ‘girlie’ girl! Her world is a fancy, dancy Princess place and dress up is just the normal way of life. Her days are full of family and school friends, doting adults, and just a bit of drama with her little brother to make it the perfect recipe for one super summer day after another.”

Has your band student outgrown his/her concert attire? Consider donating clean and gently used white shirts, black pants, black skirts or black shoes to the band program. The band directors maintain a supply of these items for emergency use by SMS and Woodbury band members. If you would like to donate concert attire, simply send it to one of the band directors with your student.

At the high school level, a great number of travel opportunities exist for students–whether touring in Europe with fellow students from the band, choir or orchestra, engaging in a language immersion program to Chile or Germany, or participating in a service project in Southeast Asia.
While all student travel experiences have fundraising opportunities to support the trips, we know these costs are great. The time to start saving is NOW! Our partnership with Huntington will allow you to start a Student Travel Savings Fund now.
Your savings today will give your student the experience of a life time in high school! To start your student’s travel fund, contact Bran don Tufts at Huntington’s Fairmount Circle branch at 216-515-0285.
