Program Notes La Madre de los Gatos This piece derives its title from a nickname given to Mrs. Verda Shine by her colleagues and fellow band directors at Bryd Middle School in Duncanville, Texas. Alone with her fondness for cats, Mrs. Shine earned her nickname for her commitment to the nurturing and support of program staff and students. The piece was written to celebrate her zeal and dedicated service as a Duncanville band director.
Abracadabra From the composer: “This piece is dedicated to my son, and it is at once playful and serious, innocent and mischievous. Throughout the composition I was thinking about magic, not in an evil or frightening way, but as a source of fun and fantasy. My wonderfully playful, sometimes mischievous young son was always in the back of mind, as were images of Halloween with its costumes and jack-o’-lanterns. As the piece nears its conclusion, the music rushes towards what seems to be an explosive finish. But the woodwinds interrupt, fanning out to a questioning whole tone cluster. They are answered by a puff of sound, a final disappearing act.”

Woodbury students make huge strides from choosing their instrument and learning “Hot Cross Buns” to performing increasingly difficult styles of music. Middle School musicians’ skills continue to grow in their concert and jazz groups. The 8th graders were thrilled to join the high school students to perform under the Friday Night Lights. It takes a tremendous amount of expertise, care and funding to make this all happen. Funding supports Woodbury jazz band tees, the SMS Cedar Point trip, SHHS senior gifts and recognition, as well as treats, snacks and water throughout the year for all of our musicians. Band Boosters are committed to ensuring that every student has access to Shaker Band opportunities, especially international travel. Our goal is to raise $10,000 every year so that every band student can afford to attend an international band trip. Annual Patron Levels: Adagio ($10 to $100) Andante (up to $250) Moderato (up to $500) Allegro (up to $1000) Vivace! (more than $1000) Please consider becoming a band patron!
