Civic Honoree Carole B. Segal We are proud to recognize civic leader and philanthropist Carole B. Segal with this year’s Spirit of Shakespeare Award. A Chicago Shakespeare board member since 2001, Carole has been a driving force behind the evolution of the Theater and a true advocate of its education and community initiatives. As president of the Segal Family Foundation, she created an endowed fund in 2014 to support our student matinees, making it possible for tens of thousands of young people to experience the magic of live theater. When COVID-19 restricted in-person gatherings in 2020/21, the fund enabled the Theater’s education team to reinvent its programs, serving the needs of students and teachers by creating a new virtual platform, Stream & Study. Beyond her board service at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Carole is a trustee of Rush University Medical Center and chairman emeritus of the Board of Governors of Rush University. She is a life trustee of Illinois Institute of Technology, a trustee of Catholic Theological Seminary, and serves on the board of Overseers of Colorado Mountain College. A graduate of Northwestern University, Carole serves on the NU Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences visiting committee. She is a trustee of Crow Canyon Archaeological Center and is one of the co-chairs of the American Business Immigration Coalition. Carole is co-founder of the Crate and Barrel and founder of Foodstuffs.

TO BE

TO BE supports Chicago Shakespeare in Classrooms and Communities IN CLASSROOMS Shakespeare remains a cornerstone in American schools, but his work is among the most complex texts that a student is asked to read. Our program unites the talents of theater artists and classroom educators to bring Shakespeare to life, improve literacy skills, and instill self-confidence and creative thinking in participants. Each year, Chicago Shakespeare’s nationally recognized education programs partner with hundreds of English teachers and tens of thousands of students throughout Chicagoland and beyond.

IN COMMUNITIES Through the Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks program, the Theater collaborates with arts partners from across the city to develop a multidisciplinary, collectively devised adaption of a Shakespeare play that tours to Chicago Park District parks over the summer. A celebrated annual tradition, this program harnesses the transformational power of vibrant, neighborhood-based collaborations to be a force for positive change within communities. In the summer of 2022 Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks will collaborate with hundreds of artistic partners to create a truly unique production reflective of our city’s neighborhoods, and will play for free in South and West Side parks, engaging people of all ages.
