transition s e m m a r g o pr Moving between schools can be a worrying time for pupils and their parents. We use the power of Shakespeare’s stories to explore with pupils the themes of change, friendships and leaving a safe world for an unknown one. By working together, pupils in feeder and receiving schools make new friends and get to know their new school and teachers through the power of performing Shakespeare.

Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 Building Bridges is a unique project developed by Globe Education to ease the transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. After an interactive storytelling session, we work with Year 2 and 3 pupils and their teachers to create an abridged performance of a Shakespeare play.

Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 In the summer term of Year 6, pupils pair up with their feeder secondary school and work with Globe Education Practitioners to explore a Shakespeare play, while also becoming more familiar with their new environment. In the autumn term of Year 7, the pupils build on these workshops by teaming up with their new classmates to create a promenade performance. As with all of Globe Education’s work, projects can be tailored to suit the needs of your staff and pupils. Contact us to discuss how Globe Education can contribute to your transition strategy.

By the end of the project, staff’s initial apprehension was annulled. This was mirrored by the amazed and enthusiastic appreciation of our parents.

Children as storytellers For younger children, stories told or heard can help them understand the world in which they live and allow them to transmit that understanding to others. Talk is a rehearsal for writing, and first-hand situations experienced through drama and role play approaches provide young children with the ideas and language they need for writing. We use Shakespeare’s stories to develop Key Stage 1 pupils’ responses to, and understanding of, stories and their ability to share that knowledge through the spoken and written word. Through active participation, play and performance, pupils are encouraged to think about how stories are structured, how characters behave and the moral dilemmas that confront them. Additionally, it provides teachers with the skills and confidence to lead practical approaches to literacy. Supporting pupil performances Teachers throughout the UK are linking with Globe Education to produce performances of abridged Shakespeare plays at their schools. Teachers are given expert guidance by professional directors and actors to provide advice, support and a team-directing approach to empower pupils of all ages and abilities to speak Shakespeare’s words in front of an audience. Programmes of work are made to measure according to the needs of the group, and we can work around your school’s timetable. Past projects in schools have involved: •

A CPD session by a Globe Education Practitioner on directing Shakespeare’s plays for Key Stages 1 and 2.

A specially abridged script, provided and edited by Globe Education.

Performances can be developed for use in any setting – in a school hall, outdoors, or as a promenade piece.
