The Winter Selection is my final season as Artistic Director at Shakespeare’s Globe, and it will be full of treats. It is sometimes easy to forget that theatre is a joyful indulgence; a night out to be told a story, to be entertained, gripped, amused and challenged. As a child, I remember vividly that a trip to the theatre was intoxicating and thrilling. We planned it, looked forward to it, then, when the night came, put on our best clothes and entered the dark world of ‘what ifs?’ The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is the most delicious, the most unique, and most beautiful box of delights there is. Magical and intimate, ancient and immediate, this is the ultimate place to be transported back to a state of wonder, to the primal need to tell and hear stories, and to a world of rare human interaction. And this season, transport you we will! The Winter Selection will take you to a singing chocolate factory in France, the inner sanctum of Elizabeth I’s court, the dark and dangerous world of All’s Well That Ends Well, the palaces of India, the emotional depths of Vivaldi, and the tender chaos of Meow Meow’s Christmas, before we tumble back down the rabbit hole with the return of The Little Matchgirl. I have assembled some of my favourite artists and matched them with the theatrical flavours I hunger for. I believe we are in for the most sumptuous, surprising, heartfelt and touching of seasons. Join us, join me, and pick and mix as many delights as you can. We can’t wait to make these tempting theatre treats, and I can’t wait to savour and share them all with you.

Emma Rice, Artistic Director

A New Musical

‘Add a few ingredients Bold, and brave, and new. Don’t you love how chocolate is so unlike you?’

Angélique makes beautiful chocolates, carefully infused with all the emotion that seems to overwhelm her in daily life. Jean-René runs a chocolate factory that is running out of steam, rather like his own existence. Both seek help from the usual sources: Jean-René favours self-help tapes and Angélique joins a support group, Les Émotifs Anonymes. Romantics Anonymous is an unusual and tender love story in which the obstacles to happiness are not the usual external barriers, but those sneaky little ones we know all too intimately: the ones within. Adapted by Emma Rice from the French-Belgian film Les Émotifs Anonymes, with lyrics and music by Christopher Dimond and Michael Kooman, this new musical promises to be a treat for all the senses. Filled with all the joy and pain it takes to survive and love in the modern world, this is a tale that will lift any heart.

The Dark Arts of Elizabeth’s Spymaster

‘It’s not enough that men are watched; they must think themselves watched, even when they are not’

Espionage, double-crossing and blackmail come to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in this new spy thriller. Spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham oversees a vast surveillance network from the heart of Elizabeth I’s court. As the nation’s relationship with Europe deteriorates and civil unrest grows, Walsingham adopts ever more extreme tactics to keep his queen and country safe. But does he risk losing control of the apparatus he has created and destroying the lives of those closest to him? Matthew Dunster, the Globe’s Associate Director, directs this new play by Anders Lustgarten, an award-winning playwright renowned for his bold approach to social and political questions. The Secret Theatre asks what we are prepared to sacrifice in order to ensure our safety. Shot through with moments of the blackest humour, this smart, tense thriller finds its perfect setting in the shadowy recesses and flickering candlelight of the Playhouse.

Crisis is Born Meow Meow returns to Shakespeare’s Globe for a Christmas show like no other. Following her appearance in Emma Rice’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2016, the post-modern cabaret sensation brings her hilarious and heart-wrenching festive extravaganza to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This most untraditional of Christmas shows combines moments of hare-brained hijinks with poignant and tender reflections on loneliness, lost dreams and the apocalypse. You will not want to miss this chaotic whirlwind of a show, full of wit and surprises, all played out in the majestic setting of the Playhouse.

‘Mad, subversive, anti-festive brilliance... Describing it doesn’t do it justice. Go and see it.’ Time Out

‘A supremely crafted show from a woman with an extraordinary voice and a wickedly witty offbeat sense of humour. Meow Meow is one Christmas present that won’t disappoint.’ The Guardian

Performing in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse 20 – 31 December 2017 Conceived, created and performed by Meow Meow (with a little help from her friends) Originally commissioned by Southbank Centre. This show is recommended for ages 14+

Helena has lost and buried her father. Now an orphan – and an outsider – she pines for the love of Bertram, the son of her adopted family. He too is reeling from the death of his father. Will grief unite or divide them? When Bertram leaves to become the King’s ward, Helena risks her life to win his love, but only succeeds in driving him away. What follows is the story of one woman on a mission: a new kind of heroine who is prepared to stop at nothing to get what she wants. Set in a decaying world where kings are dying and wars are brewing, this is a knotty tale of young rebellion and boundless determination. After her ‘splendid’ (The Guardian) and ‘astonishingly powerful’ (Time Out) production of The Taming of the Shrew in 2016, Caroline Byrne brings this dark, twisted and dangerous interpretation of All’s Well That Ends Well to the candlelit intimacy of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

An ageing Emperor and his Governor rage at the loss of their youth and beauty. Two fratricidal sons are spurred from victory in war to the warfare of love. And all four are besotted with the same Captive Queen. This timely story of passion, politics and patriarchy is a reimagining of John Dryden’s Restoration drama, Aureng-zebe (1675). The Captive Queen is set in the late 20th century during the last days of the great woollen mills of the north of England, but retains a flavour of Dryden’s original Mughal Indian setting. The original score by Niraj Chag re-creates the rhythms of war, of workmanship, and of India, providing the backdrop for the regular beat of Dryden’s rhyming couplets, which echo the relentless whirring of the machines. Barrie Rutter, Artistic Director of Northern Broadsides, assembles a cast of British Asian actors in this wry exploration of the folly of old age, the allure of power, and the bewildering effects of lust and desire.

‘...she shall know this hour, What is a husband’s and a monarch’s pow’r.’

A Reimagining Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons comes to thrilling, theatrical life in an exhilarating show combining Gyre & Gimble’s master puppeteers with a quintet of London’s finest musicians. The performance will conjure a poetic and emotional narrative in response to Max Richter’s acclaimed recomposition of Vivaldi’s masterpiece, which has been newly arranged for the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. This unprecedented collaboration will explore the crystalline acoustic and candlelit ambience of the space in an enchanting new way. As well as being a composer, Max Richter is an accomplished pianist, producer and collaborator, and indisputably one of the most prolific of contemporary musical artists. Gyre & Gimble place puppetry at the heart of storytelling. The company, founded by former associate puppetry directors of War Horse, use puppetry to create compelling characters and tell fantastical, improbable – even impossible – stories. ‘[an] intelligent and deeply felt homage to Vivaldi’s great work.’

‘This out-does both War Horse and   The Lion King in the puppetry stakes.’

and Other Happier Tales To bring our season to a magical close, we welcome an old friend back to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. After a triumphant run in 2016, The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales will once again have you crying with laughter and laughing through tears. As our destitute heroine struggles to survive, she strikes her matches to keep warm. Each match will conjure a new story, a new vision, and we will hold her hand as we tumble down the rabbit hole together. Inspired by the beautiful and devastatingly sad Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Little Match Girl, and combining Andersen’s other tales, The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina, The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales reveals a spellbinding world of magic and mystery. Steeped in the metaphor and meaning that runs through the veins of Andersen’s enduring stories, this will be a night to delight, transport and surprise. For adults and brave children alike, expect music, puppetry, dark magic... and perhaps some modern truths that we would all rather remain hidden.
