PUBLISHER’S NOTE VOLUME 4 ISSUE 1 • JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
As I look at the editorial content in our January/ February 2017 issue, I am amazed at how much we’ve changed and grown over the last year. I am so deeply proud of this company and the industries it supports. When I think back to our very first issue, I remember being unsure of my creation. But here we are, three and a half years later, and we’re thriving. We are continuing to grow in 2017. SHALE Oil & Gas Business Magazine is now covering news from outside of Texas. We are including information from different plays around the country and abroad. And our arsenal of writers, commentators, experts and supporters is diversifying. I must say that our newly appointed Oil and Gas Editor, David Blackmon, is really helping our team grow to the global brand we’ve always strived to be. SHALE’s radio show, In the Oil Patch, started broadcasting on a new station in 2016 as well. You can now listen in on Corpus Christi’s KSIX 1230 AM station. We have been getting great responses to our show in all of the regions we broadcast and see that the community has an interest in hearing what our experts have to discuss. Looking further into 2017, I see more growth opportunities for SHALE as the industry continues its upward trend. One of our newest additions, the Texas Energy Advocates Coalition (TEAC), will be doing some great things in 2017, including a day of advocacy at the Texas Capitol. TEAC members will be gathering on Feb. 22 to advocate for the energy industry by speaking with lawmakers on the importance of the energy sector in Texas. I hope you’re interested in attending with us. Learn more at teac.shalemag.com. On a personal note, I am honored to announce that I have been elected as the Director of Community Initiatives on the Women’s Energy Network (WEN) Board of Directors. This is an organization I have followed and supported for many years, and I am so deeply honored to have an opportunity to help it grow and flourish. I proudly support WEN’s mission, and the ladies I have met through this nonprofit inspire me to do everything I can to get the word out about it. The timing of this announcement is very appropriate, considering this is our annual women’s edition. I encourage all of our female readers to look into WEN and consider joining if you haven’t already to become involved in an organization that empowers women and creates opportunities to foster career and leadership development.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS What does your typical day at the office look like? There is no such thing as a typical day in chamber world; nothing is the same or routine. Since I wear many hats (chamber, marketing, events coordination, visitors center), I can have a plan before I walk in the doors; but then I will have a member stop by or call and that is when the day changes. I love it that way and wouldn’t have it any other way. What do you like most about your position? That my day is different every day, and that I can be creative and encouraged to do so by the board of directors. I’m very lucky to have a very supportive board of directors. What interested you in entering your industry? The multitasking in small chambers like ours. You can be working on one project like an event, and then put on your chamber hat and make budget numbers work or visit with potential new members. It is never boring. And I learn something new every day. What about your career makes you most proud? Wow, I have a few. That in the six months since I accepted the position, the chamber membership has doubled in what it has been in the past few years, and we’ve increased the value of what a member receives. Also, the relationship with the city of Ingleside has been the best it has ever been. We are so grateful for the relationship we have built with the mayor and the City Council. I’ve very proud of that.

What advice would you give to young women interested in your industry? It’s very simple: Love what you do. If you don’t, then you need to move on. Remember the vision and stay true to yourself, and the rewards will come, I promise. If you want an easy job, this is not the position for you. I love my job and I’m thankful.
campaign that advocated for property tax relief to all local homeowners. I also get to speak to the media on behalf of the association, present at national trade shows about San Antonio, meet with local civic leaders about issues affecting real estate and be a decision-maker for my company. Any day I get to be a part of this diverse industry is a good day. What do you like most about your position? I enjoy the pivotal role that the real estate industry has in a community’s economic development. Because SABOR members are realtors that are held to a higher standard of care for their clients and must observe a strict code of ethics, I represent an organization that protects the American dream of homeownership and makes San Antonio and the surrounding areas a better place in which to live. That gives San Antonio a big advantage as the city competes to attract diverse industries and new companies. To ensure our value as an economic development tool, I enjoy working with city leaders as a community advocate and resource. Besides economic development, I like engaging realtors with volunteer activities that benefit our community in other ways. We regularly participate in events and donation drives with SAMMinistries to help it accomplish its mission of preventing homelessness, and we also give back through Build Days with Habitat for Humanity. What interested you in entering your industry? The idea of working with people in a fast-paced, diverse industry was very appealing to me and it’s what attracted me to the real estate industry. Every day, I get to work alongside so many different people. I learn something from each of them, and seeing issues from various perspectives helps me be a better leader. I also believe in the value of homeownership and enjoy being in a position to effect changes in the industry that can help more and more people attain their dream of owning property.

What does your typical day at the office look like? One of the things I enjoy most about my day is that it is never typical! Every day teaches me something new and gives me an opportunity to sharpen my skills as a leader and business professional. I get to work closely with other likeminded people to help the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR) accomplish its goal of being the go-to resource for realtor members and consumers. Tasks can range from little things like adding more online services to our website, SABOR.com, to more complex matters, such as leading the Proposition 1
What about your career makes you most proud? Being on the forefront of providing the tools and resources our members need to help their clients achieve their dream of homeownership is something that I am incredibly proud to be a part of. We have experienced explosive growth in our membership, now numbering over 10,000. We continue to grow because more and more people are able to get into home buying and selling due to low interest rates and the demand for homes created by an influx of jobs to the area. This also means it’s a great time for those considering a career in real estate. What advice would you give to young women interested in your industry? Don’t be afraid to let your leadership qualities show, and never stop learning. Lead by example, instill confidence, innovate, and be an inspiration. By pursuing your goals with integrity and humility, you will earn the respect of your peers and grow in your leadership abilities. Being a self-starter and having an entrepreneurial spirit are great assets for anyone entering the real estate industry. If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to build your own business and work with other professionals who are dedicated to the highest level of professionalism, then consider a career as a realtor.

What does your typical day at the office look like? Being in IT, there is never a typical day. Our Service Center is the heartbeat of IBC Bank, as we support the organization’s entire infrastructure, from retail to back end. It’s our job to keep the bank running smoothly because within the banking industry, each day brings new and dynamic challenges. We work tirelessly to ensure customers never notice if there is an issue and find solutions to keep the bank up-to-date with technological advances. What do you like most about your position? I appreciate the new challenges each day brings. There is never a boring moment in the world of IT. At the Service Center, we work collaboratively on innovative projects that help take our bank to the next level technologically and allow us to better serve our customers. Seeing these initiatives come to fruition is extremely rewarding. What interested you in entering your industry? I didn’t start in IT. My background was primarily in risk management. I’ve been with IBC Bank for 22 years, and during my time here, I’ve been fortunate to learn several aspects of the financial industry and how they work together. This opportunity with the Service Center was the perfect combination of my background in analytics, finance and risk management. What about your career makes you most proud? I’m extremely proud of how my career has progressed and evolved. I started in 1994 as an operations analyst, and last year I became one of the bank’s first female CEOs. What is equally rewarding is being able to mentor and develop my team. Our successes are the result of great teamwork with the common goal of keeping IBC Bank a high-performing organization.

What advice would you give to young women interested in your industry? As women, we need to feel comfortable with taking risks. Brand yourself as a leader, and when an opportunity comes your way, don’t let fear stand in the way of seizing it. There are executive positions across all industries available for women. We should feel confident sitting at the table.
I would like to thank the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission members for their hard work and serious consideration of the issues and facts leading to their decisions on November 10, 2016. I fully agree that continuing the Railroad Commission of Texas for the next 12 years, as well as the rest of the decisions voted out, are in the best interest of the people of Texas. During the six years I served on the Commission, a great deal of my time was spent on the sunset process. I hope the recommendations pass the legislature in the upcoming session and the Railroad Commission will then be able to spend its time solving the important issues in its purview. Often times citizens are quick to criticize but slow to praise. EVERY NEW YEAR, MANY PEOPLE RECOMMIT TO GETTING HEALTHY. WHILE THEIR RESOLUTION MAY FALTER AFTER A FEW DAYS, WEEKS OR MONTHS, THEIR HEALTH SHOULD REMAIN A HIGH PRIORITY IN THEIR DAILY LIFE. BUT WITH BUSY SCHEDULES AND RISING HEALTHCARE COSTS, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AT TIMES. IT CAN ALSO BE A CHALLENGE FOR EMPLOYERS TO KEEP THEIR EMPLOYEES HAPPY AND HEALTHY WITH FAIR HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUMS AND EASY ACCESS TO PROVIDERS. FOR MANY, IT’S A DELICATE BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR HEALTH AND YOUR POCKETBOOK. BUT THERE ARE SOME WHO SEE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS BECOMING MORE READILY AVAILABLE ON THE HORIZON. As the Chief Growth Officer at Baptist Health System in San Antonio, Shana Robinson is working each day to share with individuals and employers those innovations to improve the ease of receiving care and lower the overall cost. Robinson, along with her staff, are working out ways to connect the Baptist Health System with the community to promote a proactive approach to health and wellness. Ultimately she hopes she has brought to the organization and community fresh ideas that will improve the overall health of South Texas. For me, it’s ideas like Baptist Healthy Solutions that make this story worth telling. I enjoy meeting a variety of people on a day-to-day basis, but rarely do I meet such an impressively talented woman such as Robinson, whose ideas are helping so many already. On a personal note, Robinson has moved through the system to find a position she loves in a health system that cares. She is steadfast in her determination to think outside the box to find real solutions for real people. Thankfully the Baptist organization possesses the same determination, giving Robinson the resources she needs to bring her ideas to fruition. “Baptist really cares about the community,” Robinson explains. “The resources they have made available to the public show their commitment to the community, and I’m proud to be a part of that. I live here too, as do my kids. We all have a vested interest in providing good health services.”
Baptist Health System Baptist Health System has been around for more years than most of us realize. I certainly had no idea how long the organization has been servicing the community. It’s not hard to understand why, then, that people are so loyal to the Baptist Health System. For many people who were raised in the South Texas region and with family ties dating back hundreds of years in this community, generations within families have trusted the Baptist organization with their health. It was 1903 when 30 members of the Bexar County Medical Society teamed
18
up with local businessmen to create the San Antonio Associated Charities. The Associated Charities then commissioned the construction of a four-story hospital named the Physician’ and Surgeons’ Hospital on Dallas Street in downtown San Antonio. As the community grew over time, so did the hospital. Baptist Medical Center still stands on Dallas Street serving the community just as it’s always done. After operating for a century as a faithbased, not-for-profit healthcare organization, the system was purchased by Vanguard Health Systems in 2003. The change in ownership resulted in some very positive opportunities, such as the creation of the Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio, which funds not-for-profit health services and education throughout South Texas. Vanguard owned the Baptist Health System for 10 years. In 2013, the entity and all its markets, including the Baptist Health System, were purchased by Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Through the changes in ownership, Baptist has remained faithful to its faith-based mission and its relationship with the Baptist Health Foundation. The Baptist Health System is central to San Antonio and the surrounding areas, with seven acute-care hospitals: Baptist Medical Center, Mission Trail Baptist Hospital, North Central Baptist Hospital, Northeast Baptist Hospital, St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital, Baptist Orthopedic Hospital and Resolute Health Hospital. Each of these facilities has earned the accredited Chest Pain Center designation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The accreditation means that the hospital can deliver the rapid diagnosis and treatment of chest pain, assessment of patients, and ensure the staff is trained to work fast when the minutes matter most. In addition to that designation across Baptist’s hospital facilities, St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital has also earned the designation of Comprehensive Stroke Center, a first in San Antonio. “The Comprehensive Stroke Center at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital is capable of treating
SHALE OIL & GAS BUSINESS MAGAZINE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017
strokes in a way no facility in San Antonio was capable of doing before now,” Robinson says. “The less time we take to diagnose and treat these types of issues, the better result for our patients.” The organization also has dozens of specialty care facilities under the Baptist Health System. Its five Breast Centers focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast-related health. The breast program offered at these centers is nationally recognized and certified by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. In addition, patients will find physicians with special training and expertise in breast care, genetic counseling and testing, advanced diagnostic and treatment technology, and 3-D mammography technology. The system also hosts a school for future health professionals. The Baptist Health System School of Health Professions offers programs in sonography, radiologic technology, specialized coding, surgical technology, nursing, computed tomography, healthcare management, and more. Program degrees range from certifications to associate and bachelor’s programs. In addition, Baptist Health System has its own imaging centers, M&S Imaging, with 10 locations, four MedPost Urgent Care clinics, six women’s and free pregnancy testing centers, HealthLink facilities including one wellness and fitness location and 12 rehab services locations. The wide range of services and convenient locations throughout South Texas make Baptist Health System a popular choice for residents.
Quality of Care What sets the Baptist Health System apart, however, is not its multiple services and locations. It’s the dedication to providing compassionate and exceptional care that has patients coming back to the system for its healthcare needs. It isn’t hard to see why the system has a great reputation when you look at its values. Baptist
promotes compassion, safety, excellence, accountability, innovation and faith from within. Many of these values may seem common to organizations providing care to patients. But one stands out, unique to this organization. “Faith is a large part of our philosophy within the organization. Graham Reeve, our President and CEO, always starts our team meetings with a prayer. I think that shows just how important faith is to Baptist Health System,” says Robinson. The value has roots stemming back to the original faith-based, not-for-profit organization, the Associated Charities. The organization has held onto this principle through changes in ownership and leadership. Even Baptist’s mission statement reflects the importance of faith as an inspiration of its care. The organization’s faith services include spiritual and religious guidance from dedicated team members following various religious practices. These team members are able to help patients and their families through the healthcare process at the most difficult of times. “Sometimes families are so focused on the health of their loved one and forget to care for themselves,” Robinson explains. “The hardest time for families can come when they try to understand that their loved one is going to pass away. That’s when our faith-based services are most important. Our faith-based services can help families through this difficult time, giving them an opportunity to speak with someone on a religious level while they grieve and accept the diagnosis.” Of course, other values are equally important to the organization. Baptist displays its excellence with its accredited Chest Pain Centers and the Comprehensive Stroke Center at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital. The organization’s accountability to its patients shows in its dedication to providing the best care possible throughout the region. Its compassion can be seen throughout the organization, from the faith-based services to its efforts to support the community through the Baptist Health Foundation. Safety is almost inherent to the healthcare industry. Baptist Health System takes the safety of its patients and employees very seriously. Baptist Health System puts great effort into providing a supportive, healthy, and safe workplace for its employees. The system has been recognized for its work to provide a healthy workplace by the San Antonio Business Group on Health (SABGH), which is part of the Mayor’s Fitness Council for the city of San Antonio. The organization promotes

a healthy workplace and community wellness in San Antonio. SABGH awarded Baptist Health System with the 2016 Gold Healthy Workplace Recognition for its health and wellness promotion efforts. “In addition to Baptist Health System, nine of our Baptist Healthy Solutions clients received the same designation. It really goes to show that our program is working to keep employees healthy. And the recognition and validation is amazing,” Robinson says. In addition to the tradition of faith within the organization, innovation is another aspect that makes Baptist Health System truly unique. Of course, most healthcare organizations tout that they have innovative solutions. But one Baptist Health System program is remarkably unique, because it is used by companies to lower healthcare costs and provide convenient health services to their employees.
Baptist Healthy Solutions Healthcare costs are on the rise. Americans with individual plans feel the effects of high premiums and deductibles. But employers are feeling that pinch on a large scale. The rising costs are forcing employers to get creative in how they can be proactive about healthcare. Baptist has curated a wellness program to help employers and employees. The Baptist Healthy Solutions program is being used by companies throughout the South Texas region and is having great success in changing the landscape of employer-based healthcare plans. The key to Baptist Healthy Solutions’ success lies in its effort to provides solutions in four key areas: healthy lifestyle engagement, expedited access to primary care, acute care navigation, and postacute care navigation. Healthy lifestyle engagement is a pretty common idea among employers. Promoting healthy habits and rewarding employees who make healthy choices are some ways employers have historically encouraged employees to live healthy lifestyles. But, with the help of Baptist Healthy Solutions, employers are able to go further than simply promoting healthy choices. Offering services such as biometric screenings, health risk assessments, claims analysis, interactive online wellness tools, onsite education and health coaching, and on-site immunizations can help employers go beyond traditional healthy lifestyle promotion. Employees can see their risks and get advice from healthcare providers on topics that will help them lead healthier lifestyles, all with the ease of having the services on-site at their place of employment. Expedited access to primary care is exactly as it sounds. That on-site care opportunity expedites the process for employees to receive primary care. Depending on the contracted services, in some cases, this benefit is also extended to employees’ families. So, if Jim’s wife isn’t feeling well one day, she can be seen quickly by a Baptist Health System physician at Jim’s office instead of waiting for an appointment with her primary care physician. Acute care navigation allows employees to receive around-theclock care through the VIP care line staffed with an experienced triage nurse. This service allows families to ask questions, book appointments and more. Post-acute care navigation is the component that is not as

easily available to patients. Depending on the diagnosis and treatment plan, there can be little to no follow-up after a doctor’s visit. But with Baptist Healthy Solutions, employees can benefit from educational programs, personal coaching and post-discharge nurse evaluations. These employee services can be accurately described as a network of care. With services like the VIP care line and expedited appointments, patients will have every opportunity to access the care they need. This includes speedy referrals to and appointments with specialists, such as genetic counseling at the innovative Baptist Breast Center. For on-site care, Baptist offers two solutions for companies with differing needs and budgets. The on-site mobile health unit is a clinic on wheels. This offers mobility and accessibility with flexible hours. The mobile health unit is available for a flat fee per hour with no insurance billing. For companies with more robust healthcare needs, an on-site clinic within the walls of the company is the second option. On-site clinics are staffed with a mid-level provider, supplied and stocked with standard medications and equipment, and have a confidential HIPAA-compliant electronic medical record system. In addition, the clinics can be customized to provide a wide range of services to meet the needs of the company, including a lactation room, audiometry and an X-ray room.
Healthcare for the Oil and Gas Industry Servicing the oil and gas industry, specifically, has its own set of challenges and best practices. This is where the Baptist Health System and Baptist Healthy Solutions can come in handy for oil and gas companies. The energy industry can have specific requirements for their employees. Having a knowledge of the specifications can help healthcare providers offer the very best preemployment screenings and health services in case of illness or injury. Baptist Healthy Solutions offers pre-employment physicals, DOT screenings, essential functions tests and a return-to-work physical assessment after a short-term leave of absence. Many, if not all, oil and gas companies implement health and safety programs and processes to avoid workplace injuries, but Baptist Healthy Solutions can be helpful to companies when workplace injuries occur. Its team is experienced in coordinating care with safety officers and human resources to help reduce injuries and streamline care when an injury occurs. Baptist can also help with workers’ compensation assessments and paperwork, reduce recordables, connect injured employees with the appropriate specialists, and get them back to work as quickly as possible. Let’s focus on recordables for a moment. Human resources and safety team members will know what this term references, but I’ll give a quick overview for those of us who don’t know the importance of this term. Depending on the degree of medical treatment needed, an injury or illness may or may not have to be recorded through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). An agency of the U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA was created to ensure that employers provide safe and healthy working conditions. It’s crucial that healthcare providers offering treatment to a patient with a work-related injury understand the regulations on recordables to not unnecessarily ding the company’s OSHA rating. “When an employee is injured and receives treatment, something as simple as the medication prescribed can
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2017 SHALE OIL & GAS BUSINESS MAGAZINE
21
cause an avoidable recordable incident,” Robinson explains. “And that’s why it’s really important to have healthcare providers that are experienced and know the subtle nuances that can have greater consequences for the employer. In the case of an oil and gas employee with a workplace injury, we would have a provider with knowledge of the OSHA requirements do an assessment on the injury and give appropriate treatment that properly fits the injury. This could potentially save an employer from having their OSHA rating affected for a minor injury.” Of course, the ease of the mobile care unit could also be an interesting and useful tool for oil and gas companies looking to provide easily accessible healthcare to their employees around South Texas. When you consider the time it takes to have an employee make an appointment with a physician, and then wait in the waiting room and finally be seen, a whole afternoon can be eaten up, leaving the employer with an employee out of work for hours for a checkup. Having a healthcare provider on-site and dedicated to seeing only employees of the specific company can reduce time off for regular checkups and immunizations.
Vision and Dedication
BAPTIST HEALTHY SOLUTIONS WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH ROBINSON’S VISION AND DEDICATION TO MAKE THE SOUTH TEXAS COMMUNITY HEALTHIER

Baptist Healthy Solutions was made possible through Robinson’s vision and dedication to make the South Texas community healthier. With the support of the Baptist Health System, she is seeing her mission fall into place and its benefits reaching thousands of employees. But it was a journey to get to this program. Every part of her background has led her to start this program. Originally from San Antonio, Robinson says she didn’t start out with the intention of being in the healthcare field but ironically has spent most of her career working at healthcare-related companies. As a philosophy student at The University of Texas at Austin, Robinson was unsure of how she would use her degree. She jokingly shares that her father advised against a degree in philosophy, as this didn’t offer many job opportunities upon graduation. But Robinson stuck with her choice. After transferring to The University of Texas at San Antonio, she graduated with her philosophy undergraduate degree in 1992. Following graduation, an opportunity came along for Robinson — an opportunity she did not want to pass up – working – with the city of San Antonio in the International Business Development Office. But the ability to speak fluent Spanish was a requirement of this position. She decided the best way to learn the language would be to immerse herself in the culture by attending the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, or Tec, in Monterrey, Mexico. Listening to her story, I couldn’t imagine leaving my family and everything I know behind to live in a different culture, not knowing the language or even one person in the general area. “It was really hard at first,” Robinson remembers. “I was lonely, and after only a few days I wanted to come home. I called my father, crying, and asked him to fly me back, but he said ‘No, Shana. You committed to doing a year there and that’s what you’re going to do.’ So I did. After a while, I picked up the language and made friends. It was definitely a challenging experience, but I learned a lot and I felt empowered because I knew I could do anything.” It turns out that experience has shaped Robinson and given her more than just an opportunity to learn Spanish. That “I can do anything” attitude has helped Robinson on her path to her current role. Speaking with her, you can immediately tell she has an extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry, which can be difficult to understand. Traditionally speaking, this is also an industry with predominantly male leaders. But Robinson has found that, with the support of her fellow leaders at Baptist, her fearless attitude makes her an effective leader to her team. Robinson has been given the opportunity to start up programs
like Baptist Healthy Solutions to grow the Baptist organization and bring healthcare to more communities in South Texas. She and her team are always sharing the benefits of the Baptist Health System and some of its unique capabilities. She’s the person behind the scenes helping thousands of people get accessible healthcare at affordable rates and excellent care.
She Does It All Life can’t be just about work. Especially not when you have a husband and two teenagers! Outside of work, Robinson spends time with her family. If she’s not running errands for the house, she’s likely at a football or basketball game rooting for her 14-year-old son, Jackson, or cheering on her 11-year-old daughter, Ashley, during an orchestra performance or at a cheer competition. Being a big part of her kids’ lives has always been important to Robinson. “I always wanted to be a mom. And a really good mom. A mom who is always laughing with her kids. I want my kids to always know they are the No. 1 thing in my life,” Robinson shares. Aside from work, her time is predominately spent with her kids at their school functions. She usually spends four to five evenings at school events between her son and daughter. But it’s something she enjoys and feels brings her family even closer together. Robinson is out at these school events so often that she and her husband have grown a strong friendship with many other parents. She enjoys the time spent with her close friends in the supportive role of a proud audience member. After 18 years of marriage, Robinson is happy to say her husband, Scott, is supportive of her role as a leader within the Baptist Health System, a job that can be demanding of Robinson’s time and attention. Scott also has a fruitful career in a sport he loves: golf. Scott designs, constructs and maintains golf courses around Texas. To this day, he has designed seven courses with Arcis Golf around the state. He currently calls the Canyon Springs Golf Club his home base when he’s not traveling to the other courses under his care. Robinson says she is a fan of the sport and enjoys playing it, but finds the game to be too long many times. So, what’s Robinson’s favorite thing to do outside of work when she’s not with her kids? “Shopping,” Robinson exclaims. (I knew I liked her.) It’s understandable, in my opinion, that Robinson like to shop in her downtime. Retail therapy is a soothing escape from the stresses of work and home. It’s time when you can be alone or be with friends and do something enjoyable. And the feeling you get when you find something you love is like a reward for all the hard work you’ve done in your day-to-day life. Shopping is good for the soul, I like to think. And for all the good she’s doing for the South Texas community, Robinson deserves this guilty pleasure.
ROBINSON HAS FOUND THAT, WITH THE SUPPORT OF HER FELLOW LEADERS AT BAPTIST, HER FEARLESS ATTITUDE MAKES HER AN EFFECTIVE LEADER TO HER TEAM

Don’t Hustle Hard, Hustle Smart By: Alex Charfen
I
n business and entrepreneurship, there are few bigger buzzwords today than “hustle.” It’s on shirts and hats, in hashtags and social media profiles. While I have nothing against working hard, I’m noticing a problem with this hustle mindset: Entrepreneurs are making “hustle” their main goal. They feel like as long as they’re killing themselves, they must be doing something right. In fact, they’re addicted to the hustle. Many of us get so caught up in this hectic way of life that we forget to analyze what we’re even hustling toward in the first place. We ask ourselves, Are my daily activities moving me toward my overall vision? Am I working on the right things? But most importantly: Is there another way? How Successful Entrepreneurs Plan After spending time with and consulting for some of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet — people who have grown billion-dollar enterprises and have made billions of dollars themselves — I’ve noticed that their goals are different. They don’t focus on frantically accomplishing tasks or hustling. Instead they look for ways to increase their awareness by any means possible, because they’ve realized that awareness is what creates success. They accomplish that awareness by aggressively lowering Pressure and Noise, a term I use to explain the overwhelming pull of forces surrounding you, that is in their lives, and increasing the protection and support around them so that they can work within their strengths. Successful entrepreneurs understand that the more calm and present they can become, the greater their decision-making abilities will be, and the more likely they are to make the right business moves. They don’t get lost in busywork or spin their wheels, because they have a clear vision they’re driving toward with intention every day. One of the reasons our culture is so obsessed with hustle is that the systems we use to stay organized and accomplish goals actually promote this frantic activity. These systems are driven by agendas, calendars and lists. But there will always be more dates to fill in, more items to add to the to-do list and more appointments to make. That’s why these traditional planning systems start to feel like constraint for entrepreneurs. They drop us into a system where we can’t win. In fact, I’ve found that traditional to-do lists actually become “to-lose lists,” because they don’t really help us win in the day (but they do a great job of reminding us of what we weren’t able to accomplish). I’ve discovered that accomplishing tasks isn’t the main struggle for people like us. We naturally have that inner drive to get things done and push forward. Our problem is that we often do too much, shouldering too
many responsibilities to the point where we can’t find the momentum we need to be successful. Make Your Hustle Intentional The goal of anyone’s hustle should be to create momentum. If your hustle isn’t doing that for you, it’s time to reevaluate your process; because in order for hustle to create momentum, it has to be purposeful and planned. That’s why I tell all of my clients to establish a planning system that’s based on creating intention and generating momentum. If you look at something like Momentum-Based Planning, you’ll find a process emphasizing intention over to-do lists, teaching entrepreneurs to offload where they’re uncomfortable. By focusing on intention, entrepreneurs will know that their hustle — whatever they’re doing — is the the best use of their
time, and accomplishing these tasks will ultimately bring them what they want. And they can hustle and move forward faster by limiting the items that hold them back. This way their “hustle” is intentional, efficient and directed toward an outcome. Most importantly for entrepreneurs, a MomentumBased Planning system shows you the win, because it’s not based on the activities you undertake, but rather whether or not you accomplished your intention for the day. When we’re able to get clear on our intention — what we’re really trying to accomplish — and make progress toward that every day, it provides us with a feeling of accomplishment. We can feel ourselves moving toward our overall vision for where we want to be in the future. And when that happens, our addiction to hustle can be effective, healthy and beneficial.
Successful entrepreneurs understand that the more calm and present they can become, the greater their decision-making abilities will be, and the more likely they are to make the right business moves

OSHA — Enforcer or Your Free Safety Coach? By: Ian Threadgold
T
he answer to the title question is — it can be either! It pretty much depends on the leadership of your company and their attitude toward workplace safety and the workforce. A company whose leadership pays little attention to the safety and wellness of their workforce is sooner or later going to see the enforcer side when Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors visit your facility for an inspection, or after an accident has occurred. Then begins the legal wrangling, fines and maybe even jail time for a supervisor or manager, depending on how they have responded to the investigations and questions. OSHA even has a Severe Violator Enforcement Program for employers who have repeatedly failed to address workplace safety and disregarded regulations. The image of OSHA as the enforcer is obviously well-known. What is less obvious to many companies is how OSHA can also act as a free safety coach, for companies that are willing to be open and work with them. If your company works in a hazardous industry, you should get to know your local OSHA area director and inspectors. OSHA Likes to Work With Industry Since 2014, OSHA has had
an alliance with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the National Service, Transmission, Exploration & Production Safety Network, or STEPS. STEPS is an oil and gas industry network comprised of volunteers from operating companies and contractors working together to reduce injuries and fatalities in the onshore industry. It has worked on a regional basis since 2003, with numerous local STEPS networks. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is a U.S. agency that performs research and makes recommendations to prevent injuries and fatalities. The alliance holds the OSHA Oil and Gas Safety and Health Conference every two years, which is one way best practices are shared to improve safety performance across the industry. The OSHA conference and STEPS meetings are good ways to work with OSHA and increase your company’s understanding of regulatory requirements, as well as improve your safety performance. This is especially true for small companies who have fewer resources to commit to safety than larger organizations. The value of OSHA as a free safety coach will be greater for these smaller companies. Learning from OSHA is a great starting point for a company
without a safety program. It has been shown numerous times that companies with good safety performance usually exhibit good business performance. Ultimately it is the corporate management of the company who must demonstrate leadership by embracing workplace safety and recognizing they need some assistance/coaching. Support Available From OSHA OSHA offers a wide variety of support methods. These include documentation, educational materials and cooperative programs. Documentation: In October 2016, OSHA reissued a document that offers guidance for companies implementing a safety and health program. Titled “Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs,” it covers seven core elements, which are the basic building blocks of any successful management system. It provides excellent guidance, especially for a small company that has little or no existing safety program. Education materials: OSHA has a variety of educational materials to help your company. These include web-based eTools, downloadable software systems called Expert Advisors, training (via the OSHA Training Institute or the Outreach Training Program) and OSHA videos.
Cooperative programs: The agency has several cooperative recognition programs, which include the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) and a free on-site consultation program. The on-site consultation service is targeted at smaller businesses, helping them understand the hazards found in their industries. Successful participation can even make a company exempt from routine inspections for a year. VPP provides recognition to employers and workers in industry and federal agencies that have implemented effective management systems and have injury and illness rates below industry-average levels. SHARP recognizes small-business employers who have participated in the on-site consultation program and have developed an outstanding industry safety and health program. The Choice Is Yours You can view OSHA as an enforcer or as a free safety coach. Fines, bad publicity, injured workers and possibly jail time for some versus helping your company keep your workforce safe (using free resources). It seems like an easy decision to make, but not one that some companies pay attention to.

Make 2017 Healthy
I
t’s that time of year when we start seeing exercise gear and diet drinks everywhere we look; we’re even bombarded with this all over social media. But why does a New Year’s resolution need to be associated with weight loss or a certain body image? Weight loss, especially quick weight loss, doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy, nourished body. What we need to focus on in 2017 is a resolution to nourish our bodies with healthy, nutrient-rich foods. Let’s stop focusing so much on what the scale says or what society says, and feed our bodies with lifestyle modifications and long-lasting results. If you’re a person with a full schedule with a hundred tasks on your to-do list, you’ll want to focus on incorporating nutritious snacks and quick meals into your daily life. While whole fruits and vegetables are best, consider some of these items on your next grocery shopping trip: ● H-E-B Ready, Fresh, Go!: Make it easy on yourself to include more fruits and vegetables in your day. Try out these items for a variety of whole fruit and vegetable snacks that are sure to satisfy.
● H-E-B Fiber Cereal: Add some almonds and a few dark chocolate chips and you’ve made yourself a fiber-rich trail mix. It can be stored easily in your desk or your purse and is perfect for on-the-go snacking! ● Central Market Sea Salt Popcorn: Try this flavorful snack with a generous portion size (nearly 4 cups!).
● Oatmega Dark Chocolate Peanut Bar: This high-fiber, high-protein snack is bound to keep you full as you hustle through meetings, running errands, working out, grocery shopping, making dinner and on and on. ● Halo Top Ice Cream: A creamy indulgent dessert for only 60 calories per serving? Yes, please! And 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein make it a better option for your craving for sweets.
» 28
For quick meals, visit www.heb.com/ recipes and you’ll find nearly 600 recipes that can be made in 30 minutes or less! Look to the left of each recipe and you’ll also find the corresponding nutrition facts — remember, you’re looking for recipes that have at least 4 grams of fiber and 20 grams of protein. Although diet is a major component of a healthy lifestyle, we can’t forget about the exercise component. Exercising doesn’t necessarily need to take place in the typical gym setting — get outside or try a new activity and make it a resolution to find something you love to do. A healthy fitness routine involves a moderately intense activity sustained for about 60 minutes. Try out this routine for three days a week and work your way up to five days a week. Let’s make 2017 a year we support each other to be better to ourselves. Oftentimes, we can be our worst enemy and harshest critic, but that’s not going to help us be our best. Our bodies will function at their best and show us those results as long as we nourish them with everything they need: a healthy diet, daily physical activity and self-love. Appreciate your body for what it is and be thankful that it allows you to wake up and conquer all the tasks you put on your plate every day.

A
h, a new year. It’s about that time to hit the gym and shed a year’s worth of ice cream and french fries. To be honest, 2016 was a tough year. I think many feel the same. And during those tough years, we can let go of our weight loss goals or fitness regimens due to stress at work, busy family life, or just plain lack of motivation. But the time to get back into your routine is here. And this year, I’m sticking to my New Year’s resolution to get healthy! So I’ll be packing up my workout bag and getting back to my favorite gym: Gold’s Gym. I’ve been a customer for a while now, and I must say, I just love that place. The employees are friendly, the clientele is welcoming and supportive (at least in my experience), and the facilities have all the amenities I need. Of course, every location has a specific amenity list. My location offers child care, free fitness classes during daytime hours, a lap pool, a private women’s area with various machines and fitness equipment, a sauna and steam room, and more. The free child care is amazing! I know my son has someone to watch him so Mommy can have a workout, and I’m close by if they need me. I love the convenience factor. And my son, who doesn’t go to daycare, can get some friendly interaction with other kids his age. I love yoga. I think it is so relaxing and invigorating. I feel so good after a yoga class.
It’s amazing! And my gym offers at least three different kinds of yoga for people with various fitness needs and skill levels, so it’s great for newbies and advanced yogis. In addition to yoga, Gold’s Gym offers some really fun classes like Body Pump, Body Combat GGX Cycle, Aqua Fitness, Zumba and more. As far as their machines and fitness equipment, there is a lot of variety to choose from. I personally don’t like using elliptical machines, and treadmills can get boring for me after a while. I prefer to jump on the rowing machine and get into a rhythm. It’s a great workout and I feel like it’s kind of fun! But there are people out there who will run on a treadmill for an hour or really enjoy the stair-stepper, so having that variety there is amazing. Plus, they have every kind of weightlifting machine you can think of, including free weights. I had the pleasure of doing a four-week course with a trainer. It

TAP INTO YOUR POTENTIAL was great. My trainer’s name was Cody and he was very patient and supportive of the things I liked and didn’t like to do. He made my workouts fun and showed me a lot of new things I hadn’t done before. After those four weeks, I was more confident in myself walking into the gym and knowing a lot of ways to workout. The best part of my workout though is going to the steam room after really getting my sweat on and just relaxing for a bit. I know my son is close by and being watched over; it’s usually pretty quiet in there and I can just unwind. It really is something I look forward to doing. I guess you can say it’s my reward after a good workout! I can’t say enough good things about Gold’s Gym. If you have the dedication to get into a workout regimen, I would definitely recommend this gym. If you’re on the fence about it, they usually have buddy programs every few months where members can bring in a friend, so keep an eye out for that and go along with a buddy who has a membership. Just remember, if you’re paying for it, you might as well use it. So get in there and be healthy in 2017!

Floating for Health and Wellness By: Dr. Hannah Badrei Photos by: Sofia van der Dys
MIZU Integrative Medicine Clinic + Float Center is a new luxury clinic that utilizes evidence-based general medicine services combined with research-proven complementary therapies such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, nutrition and cognitive behavioral therapy. The idea behind MIZU, which means “waterˮ in Japanese, was developed after my husband, Dr. Mahyar Badrei, and I immersed ourselves in the culture of Japan's Kyoto region. There, we witnessed an inspiring aesthetic and lifestyle approach that helped crystalize our new vision of wellness and healthcare.

MIZU is the first luxury medical clinic to offer Flotation Therapy, also known as restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST), at its Float Center via three state-of-the art flotation pods, housed in private and upscale suites. Flotation Therapy is the perfect complement to our integrative approach of treating the mind

and body to achieve optimal wellness. Having earned a Ph.D. in computational finance at Rice University and transitioning from a high octane and successful career in energy management to drive this new clinic concept, I'm very familiar with highstress environments and the need to fully disconnect and reboot. Our state-of-the art flotation pods, resembling sleek, futuristic spaceships, are the size of a small compact car. Each pod is filled with a highly saturated solution of 1,100 pounds of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) and purified water, only 10 inches deep, which is heated to the exact skin
temperature. While inside the pod, you experience sensory deprivation; the lines between the body and the water surface are blurred, allowing you to be effortlessly suspended and gravity-free. While guests have the option to completely shut the pod or leave it open, turn on a soothing blue light with music, or completely eliminate the sound and light, all of the options create a deeply relaxing environment. A favorite of high-performance athletes such as J.J. Watt and Stephen Curry and celebrities from coast to coast, Flotation Therapy has been shown, through clinical research, to induce deep relaxation, promote meditation, reduce stress hormone levels, relieve joint and muscle pain, and reduce blood pressure. After a few sessions, some floaters have also reported improved muscle recovery time, increased athletic performance, enhanced creativity and mental clarity, and heightened concentration and focus. Personally, I feel better after one float than any 90-minute massage, and I sleep wonderfully that evening. One of the added benefits of magnesium sulfate, especially for women, is that it exfoliates and hydrates your skin and hair, leaving it feeling smooth and silky afterward. MIZU’s unique concept involves targeting all five senses and providing a luxurious and tranquil environment that is conducive to optimal wellness and relaxation. The clinic’s entire aesthetic is an exercise in thoughtful, sensory-driven design meant to stimulate specific cognitive responses. Every detail, including the abstract art, colors, lighting, aroma and music, was carefully selected based on research to appeal to the patient’s five senses.

We have also worked with an American-based master tea blender to create six proprietary herbal teas, which were all formulated based on clinical research to be palatable with optimal health benefits. All of the tea blends (Energy, Serenity, Digestion, Wellness, Detox and Immunity) are available for purchase in the clinic or on our website. After each guest floats, we brew a tea of their choice to enjoy while relaxing in the lobby. MIZU really is the way we need to experience healthcare; this is not concierge or boutique medicine. Our concept promotes health and wellness in a unique environment and context while still providing the traditional medical care with which we are familiar. Integrative medicine, and complementary therapies like Flotation Therapy, is the future of wellness. We are proud to bring this unique, upscale, integrative medicine solution to Houstonians.
