2021 - Year for Hope New Year’s Message: Mr Kirit Patel, chairman and CEO of Motibhai Group

W

e are right into the beginning of 2021 to welcome the new year with the hope that it brings us happiness, good health and a sense of fulfilment in whatever we do. Though we are into another brand new year, perhaps we should take time out to reflect on the year that was. 2020 will be remembered for many reasons; reasons that have tested the very fabric of our society, our families, our professions and our livelihoods. For all of us, regardless of where you are in the world, COVID-19 has been incredibly difficult and essentially changed the way we live. The year 2020 has been an emotionally charged one from COVID-19 hitting our shores to the severe havoc that the recent Tropical Cyclone Yasa wreaked on the Northern communities of our beloved Fiji. No doubt the new “new norm” has now become business as usual and managing risks an absolute necessity. We cannot be complacent but need to be agile. Now that we have entered into 2021, I remind all of us of a very appropriate and relevant quote by the famous French writer Alexandre Dumas in 1872 and I quote: “All human wisdom is summed up into two words; WAIT and HOPE,” unquote. This Coronavirus has taught us to WAIT for a vaccine to be found and HOPE an effective

vaccine will be applied worldwide so that we can all enjoy life and living freely without fear. The challenges brought on us by Cyclone Yasa on our islands has pelted us down again with unprecedented fury. And no Fijian who witnessed its impact will ever forget the experience. I ask that we spare a thought for our sisters and brothers who have lost loved ones during the year, and or may have spent

their Christmas and New Year in temporary shelters with their families as they try to rebuild their homes that were devastated by TC Yasa. Let us hope the New Year is just that — new, and not a rerun of 2020. Although we cannot forecast what is in store for us in the New Year, we certainly can place trust in God Almighty for His guidance, protection and providence. The whole world will definitely look forward to

2021, hoping for renewal, praying that somehow, things will get better. Let’s pray and hope that this new year becomes a watershed year when we will see the last of this awful virus and also overcome the challenges brought by Cyclone Yasa on Fijians. Whilst no one can predict when the world will return to some sense of normalcy, it’s important to look forward to the future with hope as hope drives people. It is the reason many of us will greet 2021 with enthusiasm. We are more determined to make 2021 a year of new possibilities! Motibhai Group turns 90 this year, and as we reflect, we remind ourselves that our purpose is bigger and it is important and necessary in times such as these for us to continue to develop and enhance our services to people and Fiji as nation. Our 90-years of success goes to the commitment to our vision, mission, and values with our executives and staff always at the forefront and the core purpose of our existence. May God bless each and every one of us. And may he continue to bless our beloved Fiji. I, together with our executives, senior management team and the Motibhai Group family thank all our customers, suppliers and all the stakeholders for all your support in 2020 and we wish you and your family a happy, healthy, safe and rewarding 2021.

Good-bye 2020 As we close the chapter to 2020 – which for many of us has not been the year of liking, none-the-less it cannot be disregarded. This is a year that has taught us new things and for some us it has also brought to light our strengths that we never knew existed. While the year gave us a lot of reasons to rain-check a number of celebrations and any other outing or event that may use up some or a lot of our resources, some things just cannot be done without. Such was the case for the Christmas celebrations at the Motibhai Group Suva office. Despite the constraints, the company forged forward with hosting the Christmas morning tea. It was a time to give thanks to each and every staff member for their contribution towards the succession of the company to having retained its bearing as in the previous years. While addressing the staff, Group Marketing and Business Development Manager, Mr Abraham Gomes gave us a few tips to enjoy life and remain happy while doing so. He told us that the key to this happiness is to be aware of the importance of appreciation and showing gratitude. He said these are the things that will eventually bring happiness in our lives and the lives of our family members. In all its entirety, if we look at the year 2020 – we all have a few stories of survival, of unity and humility to take away. With that being said, HAPPY NEW YEAR from the FMCG team.

Staff unite to assist cyclone victims in the north Christmas and New Year for most people is a time of enjoyment and merry making. People make plans for these festivities way in advance, they make reservations, they go the extra mile to ensure that everything is prim and proper. This year, Christmas and New Year would not have been the same for many Fijians living in the North. The entire world is aware that the Nothern Division of Fiji felt the biggest impacts of Category 5 TC Yasa. It destroyed the lives of close to 9,000 families and re-

sulted in the death of four lives which included a baby. Keeping these numbers in mind, the staff of Motibhai Suva conducted a collection to provide some relief to at least a fraction of the people affected. 30 Hampers which included essential items were prepared and will be handed over to the Rotary Labasa team to distribute. The staff also gathered clothing items and other necessary things that could prove useful to the affected people and sent them over.

Consumer promotion ends Having to buy different gifts for various people is such a hassle.

However, smart are the people who sent in their entries for the Nature Valley Facebook competition which ended on the 31st of December. This was the easiest way to give a friend or family member or even yourself a great gift from Prouds worth $200. There are 7 x $200 Prouds Oakley gift vouchers up for grabs. Entering the competition was also very simple, all the interested participants had to do was to buy two box packs of Nature Valley and take a picture of the two boxes with its receipts and send them over to the Motibhai Facebook page or leave them in comments below the post.

Motibhai Group turns 90

O

ften as we progress in our lives, we tend to forget our past. It is imperative to learn from the past so we can inspire our future. It all started with a grocery store in 1931 when Late Motibhai Patel started his own venture and later on was joined by his other two brothers. Today, the group is led by the sons and grandsons of these three enterprising brothers. Groomed in their astute entrepreneurial abilities, their succeeding generation has successfully steered the Group in several new directions. As the celebration's motto, “Celebrating our Past, Inspiring our Future,” makes it clear, that we will blend an appreciation of our Group's accomplishments with a strong commitment to inspiring the future of its members and their profession. The 90th anniversary is a time to celebrate and it also gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to our customers, business partners and employees for their continuous support to our company. To celebrate this milestone event, we have designed a 90th anniversary logo and have a motto that is very much in line with our vision for the year-long celebration.
