It is the mission of the Santa Ynez Valley Jewish Community, just a short forty-minutes north of Santa Barbara, to provide a broad variety of experiences — Jewish traditions, community support and connection, diverse Jewish education, interfaith collaboration, social justice, Tikkun Olam, and pastoral care for the Jewish community of our area. We are affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism and have been a continuing Jewish presence in the central part of Santa Barbara County for more than 40 years.
Representing members having a broad spectrum of Jewish background and observance, the more than sixty families belonging to the Santa Ynez Valley Jewish Community (SYVJC) come together twice a month to celebrate the Sabbath, as well as to mark the Jewish calendar with celebrations including the High Holidays, Chanukah and Passover and lifecycle events. Without a permanent temple building, the community celebrates Shabbat, holidays and life cycle events in member’s homes as well as in several community churches who generously open their doors to the SYVJC.
Shabbat services and adult-education in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley are Rabbi-led once a month by a rabbi contracted to travel to the area. We’ve been fortunate in attracting inspiring rabbis, ranging from interns to those with years of experience, from Los
Angeles, Santa Barbara and the San Francisco Bay Area. K’hillah Shabbats (or lay, community led Shabbat services) are held on alternate Friday nights. These creative and spiritual evenings highlight themes such as Jewish poetry, music, humor or the natural world.
The Santa Ynez Valley Jewish Community holds several fundraisers and social events throughout the year. Memorable is the annual Bel Canto by Candlelight event held at Sunstone Vineyard in Santa Ynez. The only live professional opera on the Central Coast, this popular evening of classical opera singing will be held in the cave at Sunstone on November 15th, where the acoustics are unforgettable. Additionally we host a farm dinner in the summer, this year titled, An Abundant Feast.
