ADVENTURES IN UTOPIA

THE SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR FESTIVAL L I V I N G LE G E NDS

NEW KID S ON T HE B LOCK

P LA N E T OF S O U N D

We are humbled to be hosting across our many stages some of the most respected musical players in their respective fields. Artists that have followed their passion and worked tirelessly to share their talent with the world.

Innovators or upstarts, rule-breakers or genre-benders, whatever you want to call them we love the acts that challenge the musical status quo. Shambala prides itself in help new acts get a platform. Here are just a few of the many new exciting acts to watch out for:

As always, we have scoured all corners of our planet to bring you some amazing global artists. Acts straddling all musical genres and styles play for your listening pleasure.

Mulatu Astatke (Shambala Stage 21:3023:00). It is a true honour to welcome the founding father of Ethio-jazz to the Shambala stage. Mulatu Astatke created a wholly original sound in 1970s Addis Ababa by blending traditional Ethiopian music with jazz, funk and Latin rhythms.

Young Fathers (Chai Wallah’s 21:3022:3 0). Hailing from Scotland, Liberia and Nigeria, Young Fathers have landed on their own original island thrown up by a pop volcano - tectonic plates of genres and seams of molten pop history spewing lava upon which the rich foliage of hook, rhythm and bass grow immodestly in the sun.

Adrian Sherwood (Kamikaze 00:3002:00). A musical pioneer, whose influence is hard to overestimate having been instrumental in numerous labels including Pressure Sounds and On-U Sounds.

Public Service Broadcasting (Shambala Stage 21:45-23:00). PSB’s uniquely spell-binding live AV Transmissions see them weave samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics as they teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future.

Adrian Sherwood

Femi Kuti & The Positive Force (Shambala Stage 21:30-23:00). From royal music lineage we welcome Femi and his powerhouse of a band to close Saturday night on the Shambala Stage. Femi, the eldest son of the creator of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti, joined his father’s band in 1978 and he has been performing ever since. This is a show you cannot miss! Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita (Shambala Stage 13:00-14:15). There have been many cross cultural collaborations of stunning quality over the past few years, but none have come close to the intense and beautiful magic of the meeting of the Welsh harp of Catrin and the kora of Seckou.

AN D T HE BEAT GO ES ON ... AS THE SUMMER SUN GOES DOWN WE TURN ON THE LATE NIGHT FUN SWITCH. EXPLORE THE DARK CORNERS ACROSS SITE TO DISCOVER THE MANY GEMS AWAITING YOU. M R H UN G’ S C H I N E S E L A U N D RY Steeped in Chinese mythology with a good dose of big trouble in little China, we bring you Mr Hung’s Chinese laundry and print shop. Under The Counter and Wonky Hi Fi are combining forces to bring you some of the most forward thinking, electronic bass laced music mayhem to the forefront of your Shambala!

Do you like a late night knees up, drenched in glitter, disco balls, sumptuous cocktails and endless hours of the finest house, techno and disco? Then look no further! By day a glorious fully functioning barbershop, by night discover the secret entrance and enter a world of neon, blistering 4/4 beats, drag queens and freaks!

Up in the woods you’ll find Naughty Morty’s secret ska Bar. They invite you to sample a smorgasbord of madness and delight featuring the Freedom Sound System. DJs Pablo Mangotrasher, Badly, Woodyberry, Rachbean , Shiner, Tofu plus a very special secret guest!

B E Y O N D T H E STA R S A Big Bang was inevitable the moment a stellar collective of Bath based festival folk collided with Ghetto Funk, planet Earth’s leading innovators of bass heavy funk, an underground music genre currently blowing dance floors into orbit from the USA to Australia via Europe and Asia.

S W I N GA MJ I G Ladies and Gentleman boys and girls… Let us transport you back to the world of 1920s prohibition with the Swingamajig Speakeasy! Come and party like it’s 1929 where it’s all things vintage and swing. Curated by The Electric Swing Circus with live bands, cabaret and roaring sounds of the 20s coming from the gramophone.

LAUGH, CRY, SHOUT OR SCREAM! WHO KNOWS WHAT EMOTIONS YOU’LL LET OUT AT SOME OF THE PERFORMERS THAT WILL GRACE THE STAGES OF OUR MORE THEATRICALLY FOCUSED VENUES. T HE SO C IA L C LU B Providing as much talent as is humanly possible within a venue. This year’s theatrical treats include…Sink the Pink the drag super-troop, who’ll make your evening EXPLODE with a glittery bang! And they just had to invite back Tourettes Hero & Captain Hotknives. These guys rocked last year and they’re back with biscuits, swearing and songs about animal sex! In true Social Club style the cabaret will rock your world - every show is different - world class circus, comedy, music and who knows what else. Featuring performers from as far afield as Australia and Circomedia Bristol!

T HE P LAY HOUS E After it’s storming debut last year the Play House continues to bamboozle audiences with its content. Not for the faint hearted is Tarantino Cabaret an adaptation of scenes from Quentin Tarantino films. So expect blood and gore expressed with humour and sensational style all wrapped up in a royale with cheese. Check out Le Navet Bete, these four clowns are determined to tell their stories no matter what the cost may be. A ridiculous madcap, romp rammed full of acrobatics, improvisation, live music, audience interaction and downright silliness!

WA IT IN G RO O M Want to see immersive theater taken to the next level. Then pay a visit to the Waiting Room. Listen to the lessons of enlightenment whispered lovingly between our loquacious but lost mistress and master. They think they know it all.... the truth is somewhat otherwise....out there... When the light inevitably fades and the crickets start to chirrup, dance away your woes to the Waiting Room’s gallant band adorned in their finest cricket whites, crooning their way into the wee small hours.

COM PA S S TE N T P RE S E NT S … The trademark for this venue is dedication to all things playful and silly! With Mr Wiggles, in-house clown, installed with sinister jokes and crazy contraptions designed to make you giggle, wiggle and squirm there’ll be no end to the fun! With an eclectic mix of new indie bands, cabaret and dawn-seducing DJs, the compass stage will bring brandnew talent and late-night feel-good fiestas to the lovely people of Shambala.

For those un-initiated in the spectacle of the Shambala Carnival, prepare to be blown away be the kaleidoscope of colour and scale of this event. THE BIG SWING DUST OFF YOUR DANCING SHOES SHAMBALANS BECAUSE THE BIG SWING IS COMING TO TOWN! On Sunday afternoon in the Kamikaze, The Shirt Tail Stompers will take you back to an era when real men wore hats and jazz reigned supreme; an era when Fats Waller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie had a generation jitter bugging, jiving and lindy hoppin’.

If you’re new to swing, learn the basics at one of Swing Dance Bristol’s workshops on Friday (16:00 to 17:00) and Saturday (13:30 to 14:30), or just turn up for a quick lesson before The Big Swing on Sunday.

In true Shambala style, fancy dress is heartily encouraged, with two free tickets for Shambala 2015 up for grabs for the best dressed couple. This is sure to be one of this year’s highlights.

£1

You will be charged £1 for your first cup at the bars and, for any future drinks, you simply exchange the dirty cup for a clean one. If you don’t fancy another drink until much later, you can exchange the dirty cup for a cup token instead for convenience. We do need the cups back to wash and reuse, so please return them to the bars throughout the event. If you have one left on Monday, as you leave, you can exchange it for a Shambala key ring and a chance to win free tickets for 2015 at the cup amnesty run by the amazing UpCycle Eco Rangers at Blue Gate exit.

FREE FROM DIS POSABLE PLASTICS! After last year’s resounding success, we are proud to continue with our pioneering disposableplastic-free festival initiatives. In 2013 we banned bottled water completely and introduced reusable bar cups, preventing 100,000 bars cups and 10,000 bottles being used once and discarded, and making the festival site noticeably cleaner! We hope you’ve brought a reusable bottle with you but, if not you can buy a limited edition stainless steel bottle from the FRANK Water stalls onsite with all profits going to their work funding clean water projects in developing countries. FRANK are also helping us provide free chilled and filtered water at all the main bars, in addition to their two water info points – see symbols on the site map.

MAKING WAVES: GLOBAL LESSONS TO IN SPIRE LOCAL ACTION AT SHAMBALA! As part of their Raw Blue campaign, Raw Foundation is ‘Making Waves’ again at this year’s Shambala to create a hullabaloo about the true extent of plastic pollution and its impact! Check out the dynamic art exhibition and get involved with a jam-packed timetable of activities and workshops for kids and adults. This year we’re going to Make Waves by creating more mayhem than ever with some of our workshops, culminating in an event parade around the site. From plankton to fish, we will be making lanterns out of plastic to show how hazardous (and toxic) plastic passes up the food chain and, ultimately, into us. The theme, Plastic Food Chain, will provide a powerful visual reminder to the world of the dangers of trashing our planet for the next generation.

REUSABLE CUPS INITIAT IVE – HOW IT WORK S:

YOU AR E WHAT YOU EAT We work with the cafes onsite to ensure that all food is sourced ethically and as locally as possible. We have strict standards for meat, milk, eggs and fish and require many products to be organic. We work with traders who have the same aspiration and recognise their efforts with our very own Green Traders Award. Here’s the 2013 award winners and why they’re so good!

Poco Loco wins the ultimate award for their outstanding commitment to sourcing seasonal produce, cooking on responsibly sourced charcoal and using low energy appliances. Owner Tom Hunt has also just published his debut book – The Natural Cook (mega plug!).

The award which recognises the most improved trader goes to Barn Bacon for their sheer effort and commitment to sourcing and recycling. They source their free range meat from their own farms, are amazing recyclers and reusers and even considered the number of deliveries to site. Yes, we know about the carbon-meat thing, but we had to take our hats off to these guys.

This award is randomly chosen by the Directors for food which has made an impression. There was so much to choose from, but we were bowled over by the quality of the Blue Juice full breakfast – the perfect hangover cure with one of their amazing fresh juices. We’ll be back…

W H AT HAPPEN S TO LEFT-OVER FOOD AT THE END OF THE FESTIVAL?

T HE S U RP LU S S U P P E R C L U B After selling out every sitting last year, The Surplus Supper Club returns once again! FareShare South West and their team of award winning chefs will serve delicious breakfasts, three course dinners, wine, fine cheeses and an unmissable Sunday roast. Is there anything more decadent then eating at a table with china, silverware and a nice glass of bubbly in a field with your wellies on?!

In 2013, FareShare South West collected almost a tonne of edible food at the end of the festival and distributed it to organisations working with vulnerable people. In the UK, around 4 million people experience food poverty while we throw away over half of the food available to us, approximately 4 million tonnes a year!

IN PLACE OF WAR CHECK LISTINGS IN SANKOFA’S AND REBEL SOUL FOR TIMINGS In Place of War, an organisation of The University of Manchester, started in 2004 as an AHRC-funded research project on the relationship between performance and war. We work with creativity across sites of conflict, revolution and humanitarian disaster – helping isolated artists tell their stories to a wider audience and enabling arts organisations working to make social change, share their practice.

We also build cultural spaces (in Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Brazil) through the collection of unused music and film equipment and deliver creative infrastructure programmes in conjunction with partners in developing countries. All our work is about helping isolated artists tell the emotive stories of war, revolution and humanitarian disaster, which is often omitted from mainstream media.

We have worked across the globe in over 40 countries, organising many events; a digital platform to help artists share their work (www.inplaceof war.net inside festivals; and created many critically acclaimed publications.

Each year we mobilise a range of artists from across the world to come to Shambala Festival to collaborate with a range of UK musicians. This year we are delighted to be joined by:

This London based ensemble recreate electronic dance music using a combination of orchestral instruments, synthesizer and drum kit. The result is exciting, unique and simply beautiful. They perform original material as well as remixing producers such as Bonobo, Flying Lotus, Deadmau5 and Squarepusher.

Hailing from Barcelona, The Excitements are a heady cocktail of old school soul and authentic, gritty R&B served with a whole lotta style and attitude. Their live performances are a sight to behold as they blend funk guitar riffs, a tight rhythm section with alto and baritone saxophones all delivered with relentless energy and razor sharp musicianship.

Since they last played in 2010, these gentlemen have not been resting. They have been gigging hard all over Europe and further afield and they have continued to release tracks that have been getting support from Don Lett’s to David Rodigan. Last year they released their debut album, “FORty FOUR”, and they will certainly not let your dancing feet down!

The Moulettes are among the frontrunners of the new British acoustic scene thanks to their sophisticated, unpredictable approach matching precise female harmonies against complex, swirling strings, banjo, lap steel, hammered dulcimer or washboard added in. Wonderful!

A super-band uniting the original players who, in their separate bands, invented Cumbia. Steeped in the psychedelia of 1960’s Peru, they take us on a journey back to the roots of this music. Sparkling guitar work meets loping grooves to make a cool dance-inducing sound that shows the newcomers of the recent Peruvian Cumbia revival exactly how it’s done.

Joe Broughton, of Urban Folk Quartet fame, is one of the country’s leading fiddle players and this, a behemoth of a folk band, is one of his other, more harebrained, projects. The Shambala Stage will be filled to bursting with 47 musicians creating a joyous cacophony. This project of orchestral proportions promises to be powerful, musically virtuosic, fun and original.

Fitty Gomash will be grabbing your partners and swinging your sisters in an epically proportioned, Shambala Stage ceilidh! So, prepare to dosey-do as this Bristol based band play traditional and original tunes. Their live shows are always raucous and there will be plenty of expert dancers to get your steps right. 17:00 - 18:00

THE MOU SE O U TFIT FT. DR SYNTA X , S PA R K Z A N D TRUT HOS M UFAS A This eight piece hip hop act from Manchester produce a slick combination of quality samples and fiendish beats. Influenced by soul, jazz, funk, reggae and classic hip hop breaks, and laced with lyrics from some of Britain’s most promising emcees, this is conscious hip hop at its best. Nice!

S LA M B O RE E Slamboree are a cutting-edge extravaganza comprised of multitalented performers from across the globe. The band mix up genres spanning Balkan to dub, classical to drum & bass and breakbeat to electro-swing. Add to this fire-eating, juggling, hula and acrobatics and you have quite a spectacle! 21:30 - 23:00

We are so excited to welcome Femi and his powerhouse of a band to close Saturday night on the Shambala Stage. Femi, the eldest son of the creator of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti, joined his father’s band in 1978 and he has been performing ever since. His most recent album, No Place For My Dream, is a tour de force and sees his return to the essence of Afrobeat. We strongly recommend that you do not miss this show!

C AT R I N FI N CH & SE CK O U KE I TA There have been many cross cultural collaborations of stunning quality over the past few years, but none have come close to the intense and beautiful magic of the meeting of the Welsh harp of Catrin and the kora of Seckou. We are delighted to welcome them to open the Shambala Stage on Sunday with their gorgeous, delicate and intricate music that is still powerful and bold.

A wide ranging, eclectic and progressive musical outlook has always been the approach of Lack of Afro, the brainchild of Adam Gibbons. The latest album follows suit as he harnesses disparate musical styles ranging from funk, soul and hip hop to create a contemporary yet retro musical escapade. 17:50 - 19:00

C O L L I E B UDDZ Raised in Bermuda, Collie Buddz was immersed in the sound system culture of the island from a tender age. He exploded on to the scene in 2006 with pounding beats, catchy melodies and a unique falsetto vocal style. Collie’s voice sits with equal comfort over the jump-up pace of ragga, soca, hip-hop beats or an achingly slow one drop.

Mulatu Astatke created a wholly original sound in 1970’s Addis Ababa by blending traditional Ethiopian music with jazz, funk and Latin rhythms. His trademark organ and vibraphone sounds are intoxicating and unmistakable, inspiring countless musicians to follow in his footsteps. Mulatu continues to expand on his pioneering vision for Ethiopian music, pushing boundaries and reminding us that the original architect is still the undisputed master.

Get your skates on and prepare to shake, rattle and roll your booty as we welcome back a true Shambala institution, the much loved Roller Disco!

An energetic and contagious show across 4 decks producing an inventive, genre-bending mix of glitch hop, breakbeats and d’n’b built on the foundation of the 90s hip hop running through the heart of their inspiration.

This Bristol based duo have a sound that draws on many influences without kowtowing to one in particular. Whilst traversing the whole spectrum between pitch shifted vocals and bass heavy rumbles, their sound is always deep and on point with the vibe.

W O N K A V I SI O N Once again, James “Wonka” Cousins has lined up this Friday’s heavyweight Kamikaze program for y’all. Here he is getting involved with dirty bass music of many textures. 23:00 - 00:00

ROSKA Even among his contemporaries, Roska stands out as a unique proposition. His music - an explosive cocktail of swung house percussion, blocky melodies and body-battering sub-bass - is immediately distinctive and never fails to hit the dancefloor hard.

B.TRAITS Boasting one of the most original sounds on the scene, B.Traits incorporates everything into her sets from breakbeat to jungle, dubstep to dancehall and garage to hip hop. Now, with a Radio 1 show and her own productions, B is set to go far. Very far. 02:00 - 03:00

THE KIDS AREA

THE KIDS FIELD H A S NON-STOP FUN FROM 9 TO 5 EVERY DAY! Outside we have trampolines, the art trike, parachute games, circus skills, crazy bikes, a glitter monster, breakdancing, a musical maze, loads and loads of bubbles and loads more than we can fit onto this page.

There’s loads for toddlers to sing, dance and play with in the Toddle Inn, and we’ve got tonnes of toys and games for them to play with and keep them happy. We also have a brand new elemental free play area with water, sand, wood and a bit of magic to keep the essence of play alive.

In the Arty Farty tent and other art venues you can make silly glasses, bracelets, comic books, costumes, badges, headdresses, musical instruments, your own toys and even help to make a giant dragon!

The Kids Field programme is too jam packed to list everything here so check the blackboards outside each tent for information and times. Parents please come and join in with your kids and show them you’ve still got that play magic. If you and your kids aren’t smiling from ear to ear and completely exhausted after a day in the Kids Field we want to know why. We’ve spent ages putting this all together, so stop reading this and run off and play!

In the Hammer and Nails tent you can play as builders and carpenters, making your very own constructions from wood. In the Chango Music tent you can play in a band, join in a drum circle, beat box and sing all day. Maybe this is the start of your journey to playing on the Shambala Stage one day!
