Sexual Violence Awareness Week 2014

Page 1

On behalf of the Sexual Violence Awareness Committee and the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre we welcome your engagement during this year’s Sexual Violence Awareness (SVA) Week. SVA Week provides a much needed opportunity for individuals and communities to raise awareness regarding the prevalence and scope of sexual violence. It is a week in which people are encouraged to talk openly about the realities of sexual violence in our everyday lives while acknowledging the strengths that exist in our community that can contribute to the prevention and elimination of sexual violence. This year’s SVA Week theme is Breaking Barriers: Enhancing Community Response. An essential key to addressing and eradicating sexual violence is breaking down existing social and cultural barriers and allowing for a unified stance against sexual violence. Ensuring that supports are accessible and providing education to all members of the community is a must. By participating in SVA Week you are breaking down barriers and contributing to a safe and empowering community that is ready and able to talk about, respond and combat sexual violence in all its forms. We would like to offer our warmest thanks to all of our staff, volunteers, and partners who have offered support, skills, and an investment towards the success of this year’s SVA Week. Also, great thanks to Budden and Associates, our platinum sponsors for this year’s week. Finally, an immense thank you to the over 370 individuals who have reached out to us for support this year alone and to the thousands of individuals who, due to barriers, have not sought support; your courage and strength inspires us to hope and work towards a community free of violence and inequality.
