M1 If you think it strange to know exactly who you are, while still searching for just who you really are, then you’ve found yourself in the right place. My name is Shane O. Batchelor, an aspiring architect, writer and nature lover. I’m fascinated by the beauty that exists around us, crafted through millions of years of evolution, and uniquely endowed with those traits and characteristics that are emblematic of an artistry and allure only to be found in nature. Nothing we have done, nothing we have made, has, can, or ever will surpass the ephemeral grace of nature. I hail from one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica. You may have visited before, and if you haven’t, you should go. It is there that I first developed my love for nature and the outdoors. Towering green, lush and vibrant mountains delineate the interior, and white sandy beaches with irridescent turquoise waters, define the perimeter boundaries. I’ve driven through the hinterlands of the interior on streets that were cradled overhead by canopies of ferns whose branches and limbs were irretrievably interlocked, like the comforting embrace of a mother and her newborn baby. The beauty of this place is implacably breathtaking. I could not have chosen to be born in a more perfect place. My love for architecture stemmed from my previous occupation, as an alarm installer, wherein I had the priviledge of seeing and experiencing (from the inside out), a dizzying array of architectural styles. I’ve worked on everything from humble shacks to elaborate mansions. What’s remarkable about each of these, is that they’re all equally precious to their owners. There is no difference in value between a trailer and its owner vs a mansion and its owner. Each is meaningful in its own way, and transformative

for the people who live within. For this reason, I am happy to participate in an endeavor that brings fulfillment and satisfaction to those who are willing to partake. Besides being outdoors and listening to, seeing, feeling, smelling, tasting, and experienceing all that nature has to offer, I enjoy (tremendously would be an understatement) the art of woodworking. Perhaps it’s the unmistakable smell of fresh cut wood, or the joy of watching the grain come alive once subjected to the transformative capabilities of an oil or stain. Either way, I’m hooked. Woodworking and me are bff. I have opposing viewpoints when it comes to color and its proponderence in life. On one hand when it comes to nature, I find subtlety is best. Taupes, browns, and greens work well, as complements to mother nature’s offerings, however, when it comes to communicating with our fellow homo sapiens, it’s better to stand out. Bright colors – oranges, yellows, fuschias, even chartreuse work best at grabbing that ever fleeting human attention. As such, these find their way, more often than not, into my presentations and renders, especially when it comes to communicating my concepts and ideas. On this blog, you will find a sufficiently variegated focus. It represents my ever shifting gaze, from architecture, to nature, to theory and philosophy. Do not be surprised to find a poem about nature, mixed in with philosophical jaunts on the impositional nature of the straight line. You may even come across a a piece of design work or two. Either way, I hope you find something that not only peaks your interest, but inspires you to do something that falls outside of your usual purview.

Architecture goes beyond a building’s envelope, spatial arrangement, structure, or form. Key to the success of an architectural work is the user’s experience once he/she inhabits the building. A sussessful, wholistic design must consider the occupant’s p s y c h o l o g y , environmental influences, programming, as well as the health, safety and well being of the user. Color design has the ability to influence these c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s tremendously. This chapter examines the •use • of color in an architectural work, namely, the Schroeder House, by• architect Gerrit • • Rietveld.

Color + Film Color tells stories. Color affects associations, our health, elicits specific responses,
and
impacts
our moods and behaviors. In broad terms, color plays a significant role on our psychologies. Warm colors such as reds and oranges conjure up feelings of courage, bravery, passion, strength and happiness. Film makers have long understood these emotions and tailor their cinematography to color schemes that complement the message and tone of the film. This chapter looks at a cinematographic work, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, analyzing the color choices, and their impact on various scenes.

Color + Balance
Balance refers to the relationship of hues to each other when each is perceived to tbe equal in perceived visual weight. Three typical types of balance are defined to include symmetry (formal), asymmetry (informal), and radial (emanating from a central point). Color balance can be achieved by manipulating: Value (lightness or darkness) Hue Balance (complements) Intensity Contrast (brightness/dullness) Size of Color Area (large/small) Good color balance can enhance or diminish spaces by creating an illusion of vertical or horizontal space. Similarly, common errors in color usage can result from too little contrast or single color overload.
Color + Photography We see and perceive our world through color ultimately. From warm beautiful sunsets, to colorful and electrifying auroras, color comprises all physical things in nature. Photography offers us the ability to curate those colorful moments in time, so that we may study, analyze, or simply enjoy them at our leisure. This chapter focuses on my travels across numerous cities, from Miami Beach to St. Augustine. Each offers a uniquely colorful look at our world through the lens of a camera.

M7 Rhythm is movement! Rhythm is a natural evolutionary trait, originating in nature, which can seamlessly be applied to interior spaces. Rhythm is integral to the way we experience and navigate spaces, as it contributes to wayfinding and physical orientation. There are a variety of ways we achieve rhythm, namely: Repetition Alteration Progression Continuation Radiation Designers can create rhythm using colors by manipulating hues, values, or contrast of saturation, among other options. However, as powerful a tool as it may be to invoke color, it can easily become distracting, overwhelming or even chaotic. It is necessary to coordinate and organize the patterns and hues in order to create a harmonious, rhythmic palette.

Color + Retail Perhaps one of the most ubiquitous ways in which we encounter color most often is through our dealings with retail establishment. Companies assidously create and design spaces that manipulate our emotions, in an effort to encourage us to buy more goods. Color palettes are applied, not only to the overall spaces, but to the products, each with a specific effect and intent. This chapter surveys a small retail establishment, and analyzes the way its designers organized the store using color.

M9 Proportion refers to the size relationship between various parts, as well as the visual composition of the whole Scale varies slightly from proportion, and refers to the size or shape of an object or thing, in relation to a known quantity. Both are at once singular, and interchangeable, however, scale especially when combined with the human body, allows us to perceive spaces in relation to our own self referential experiences. Even as we create our color palettes, we must be careful to choose colors that are proportionally appropriate - primary, secondary, and tertiary colors from largest to smallest porportion respectively. Choosing the right colors is as much dependent on the form and configuration of the space, as it is the size. For example, a large, voluminous space can safely handle a dark and intense primary color, whereas that same color in a much smaller space might quickly become overwhelming.

Color + Hospitality Variety is a terminology used to denote the combination of multiple color components, using shape, texture, line and pattern in order to create diversity and contrast. This is critical in countering monotony, while inspiring visual interest. This chapter examines the usage of this principle in a h o s p i t a l i t y environment, the Conrad Hotel, Miami Fl.

Color + Rendering Rendering is a critical tool designers use in order to evaluate multiple options when designing a space. It offers a window into potential outcomes and can sometimes be a significant aid to clients who may not be able to mentally visualize spaces. Rendering offers safe experimentation while producing tangible results. This chapter evaluates a single scene, applying multiple color schemes in order to achieve an optimally comfortable design.

Color + Workplace W o r k p l a c e environments offer unique opportunities in which to use color in order to create movement, continuity, establish program, indicate circulation, add visual stimuli, as well as offer a variety of experiences for the user. Importantly, we experience these spaces daily as we work, which further drives home the need for variety anc creativity to maintain an engaged workforce. This chapter evaluates one workplace e n v i r o n m e n t , examining its effective use of color to create variety.
M12
Color + Culture Different cultures engage with color differently. A variety of influences determine the nature of the engagement, from environmental influences to food. This chapter evaluates the pervasion of color within two different cultures, Jamaica and Peru, through a look at the food each consumes daily.

Color + Conclusion Color pervades our everyday lives. It is inextricable from our daily experiences, and it informs our perception and understanding of our world. Color Theory gives us an underlying understanding of the foundational concepts that are the organizational basis for our use of color. When employed correctly, color can be transformative, and can significantly enhance our standard of living .
