Welcome to the 2023 Chinook Harvest Classic brought to you by the Southern Alberta Angus Club. Steep in Angus history boasting foundation breeders in the Black and Red Angus world in some of the harshest environment you will find across North America. Winters can be relentless only to be saved by a “chinook” that restores sanity to the summers where southern Alberta boasts record amounts of sunlight and heat units. The long summers allow for a variety of crops to be grown such, vegetables, multiple hay cuttings and the world famous “Taber corn”. Amidst the opportunity brought on by the climate this also poses the challenges for the cattle, but when you have the genetics that have been bred in this area, these cattle will carry water all the way to the pay window.
A new format for the Chinook Harvest Classic this year being held at CD Land and Cattle just a few miles southeast of Taber. This event will be a video sale but with the sale cattle being available for viewing just outside. We thank the Domolewski’s for the use of their venue and invite you to check out the action. A great mix of heifer calves and bred females and exciting embryo lots. In our travels across southern Alberta we were able to secure some leading pedigreed females from proven track records, best of all when a consignor is asked for “that” animal and they wince you know you’ve struck gold. That is our intention to get the very best we can.
With a history going back 21 years on the Chinook Sale, there is a special place in our hearts for this sale and the opportunity for consignors with all level of experience to work along side other breeders in honing their skills. Join us on Saturday, October 7th for the Chinook Harvest Classic. If you have any questions regarding the offering, feel welcome to reach out to any of the consignors, sales staff or ourselves at Castlerock Marketing.
See you sale day!
DONATION HEIFER CALF e DUG 38L
DONATION - CD LAND AND CATTLE
Thank you to CD Land and Cattle – Doug and Cheryl Domolewski for this generous donation heifer calf. Proceeds will be directed to the Southern Alberta Angus Club Junior Initiative.
We have been fortunate to experience first hand the great things the Southern Alberta Angus Club is able to contribute to its members and Angus breeders so we and happy to provide this year’s donation heifer. Delia is a heifer calf out of
a 12 year old female who has never really missed a beat. This is our first set of calves out of the Red Wildman Kraken 009H bull and so far we really like what we see with calves that have lots of performance and natural growth.
DUTCH AUCTION PROCEDURE
e The final bid in each round will denote the amount of that bidder’s donation. Ex:
Round 1 – Final Bid is $300 to John Doe. John’s donation is $300.
Round 2 – Final Bid is $250 to Tom Jones. Tom’s donation is $250.
Round 3 – the heifer is re-auctioned on a downward scale until no further bids are received.
e Each $10 purchased (donated) represents one chance in the draw. Ex: John Doe has 30 chances, Tom Jones has 25 chances and so on down the scale.

Donation Heifer
We are extremely excited to be a part of the Chinook sale and while we don’t like to usually sell female,s we are bringing a rip to town. Stellar and his progeny have been on fire the last few years with one of his greatest attributes being an excellent foot, big spread potential with the maternal side ties this together really nicely! With 70 years in the Angus business, we have mixed in some of our greatest accomplishments in breeding in this female, cue in Thundercat 168D and his dam the 78A cow who doesn’t miss! This Paula cow family dates back to a purchase we made from Double Four in 1979 and 44 years later we are still reaping the benefits. Big time heifer here that looks as good as she reads.

LOT 3 - UNRAU ANGUS
A direct “The Rock” daughter out of the famed Blackcap cow family from Allencroft had Shane chasing her right away in the pasture. She’s correct and fancy with a gentle disposition to her with high growth potential. The dam of this heifer is a foundation cow for us and she’s sure to be for her new owner. We think highly of this heifer, unfortunately they can’t all stay at home.
LOT 4 - CUDLOBE ANGUS
UGA 173L
173 is sure to catch your eye in the pen just as she did Shane’s. She is a feminine built female with impressive dimension through her lines coming from a powerhouse of a female in the 100X cow. Basin Safe Deposit is a sought after semen sire with a unique combination of correct foot structure, carcass merit, and phenotype. 173 herself is ranked within the top 25% of the breed for her BW, WW, YW, docility and marbling EPDs. It is not every day you have the opportunity to obtain a female hand picked from the heart of the Cudlobe herd.

LOT 5 - ALLENCROFT ANGUS
Here is a daughter of Border Butte Backdraft 358G, a herdsire that has left us with females that milk well, desirable udders and best of all, great feet. The dam is from our cherished Blackcap cow family that has left us with a lot of great cows over the years, mix that with Jindra Double Vision and the overall qualities he sired throughout the industry and we have a winner. Study the years of breeding that go into this heifer, Shane had free reign to pick on the calves and we think she’s a worthy opportunity.
LOT 6 - ALLENCROFT ANGUS
Another powerful Backdraft daughter with not only a strong genetic makeup, her design structurally make her one to watch. Also from the Blackcap cow family that has flourished in our herd and gone on to do great things in others, definitely our largest cow family in our herd. A shot of TOD in the background further solidifies the strong foot structure and bone he bred into the cattle carried a lot of performance to them amongst extremely nice udders.

Talk about the full package. 110 is a fancy built female with an impressive EPD profile and pedigree to boot. She is the maternal sister to the Semex sire Cudlobe Comet 91J as well as the first Canadian daughter on offer of the very dynamic and talked about Baldridge Versatile. 110 herself is not to be overlooked as her phenotype speaks for itself and her EPD profile ranks her within the top 10% of the breed for WW, YW, Residual average daily gain, docility, carcass weight and marbling.
LOT 8 - UNRAU ANGUS
This Erica 55E daughter is pretty special not only from her maternal ability standpoint but being sired by the Hot Pistol from Hamiltons who is an own son of the Cowboy Cadillac bull that sold to Hextall’s for a long dollar, and when you have two shots of the Blackcap 27R cow, Syndicate, Kodiak and the Echo cow family you really have something special. This will be our first trip to the Chinook and we are excited with the quality we are headed in with.

When the thought of consigning a female to the Chinook Harvest Angus Sale the one thing was certain was that it was going to be the best we had. 305L is deep bodied well built hfr . Her dam 231A was our pick of the herd when Harry Philipsen dispersed. She is a moderate made cow with extra length that is very fertile having backed up 60 days in the first 2 years we owned her. 305L’s sire Bag of Chips needs no introduction having been a mainstay at Lazy MC Cattle Co. siring bull sale high sellers along with females that have gone on to be highly productive females in the herd. 305L has a great disposition and will be halter broke. If milk and longevity is on your shopping list this girl deserves a look!
LOT 10 - FIREWORK CATTLE CO
This Mossy Oak daughter made it a hard choice on a heifer to consign into this sale. As a first time consigner ever, we wanted to bring our best to town and I think we’ve got her. Out of a 2 year-old we bought from the 50th Anniversary of Red Round Up, you know she’s gotta be good! From day one, we admired the muscle and shape this heifer presented. Smooth front, depth of body, and a good foot what more could you want!? Tikka always had a look to her and it was easy to tell she was gonna do big things. Scoop her up, take her home, breed her right and watch your profit make itself.

Her sire is a son of Final Deal 78z and he is stamping his calves with style, moderate birth weights and explosive growth. This is his first calf crop and to say we are happy is an understatement. Her dam is a big, broody female with tons of milk and maternal instincts. Katie 8L has all of the makings of a productive female and we are confident that she is going to make a positive impact in any breeding program.
LOT 12 - KOPPER LC RED ANGUS
Here is a very functional heifer, out of a first time dam. Dark red, with a dark foot. Lots of style and charisma. Muscle shape with correctness, she is the kind of heifer to hang a show halter on. Backed by some notable genetics in Jackal 20J (Lloydminster stockade, and Olds Fall Classic champions), Red DKF Racer 8E Red Angus Grand Champion Bull that needs very little introduction. Red Shiloh Rosette 54K has all of these attributes and more. She has been bred to our exciting new Herd Sire, Allison Refine 78K. Refine was the High-Selling Black Angus bull at the Allison Farms Bull Sale this past spring and we could not be happier with the way he has developed over the summer. This attractive “Black Wheel Dracarys” son has an impressive combination of calving ease and performance EPDs and stands on a perfect leg and foot structure. Refine 78K was not only used heavily in our breeding program, but also in Allison Farm’s, confirming our confidence in the high quality of this outstanding new sire. Outcross for most! Vet checked safe to calve mid January.

LOT 15 - THISTLE RIDGE RANCH
For our program we found it very important to get a bull like Red BLJ Gizmo 50G into the mix. Our customers were wanting lower and lower birthweights, and we were struggling to maintain calving ease and performance in the cow herd trying to accommodate that trend. The fact of the matter is, our pelvis’s were getting smaller at the same rate as the birthweight. Enter Gizmo. Red TR Goldette 2267K has everything you want in an Angus female, the type we need more of I believe. I expect power and longevity out of this girl. The service sire should produce excellent daughters, and has a great temperament. We picked him up this spring from Matt Janzen, and ran him with 25 heifers. Good bull.
LOT 16 - THISTLE RIDGE RANCH
No frills or ribbons, or curve bending EPD’s come along with this bred heifer. All she has to offer is generations of very good footed, unbelievable udders, and the ability to lay down and give you a calf that will rise to the high end of a bull pen, or worse case, a daughter that will raise many more boring progeny that made the Angus famous as the best no nonsense mama cow out there. If she doesn’t have one of the nicest udders in your herd after she calves, you can send her back, I’m that confident. The service sire is a Red Rust Redeem son out of a stand out Red Towaw Jive daughter. He’s a breeding weapon. By the time the gate is closed, he’s all done and back in the corner smoking.

Very exciting mating here. Preg check shows favour to Credential.

We acquired Badger 529G in the spring of 2020 as the leadoff bull in Six Mile’s Annual Bull Sale. A typical Badger daughter has an impressive udder, stands on a strong foot, is big topped with added rib, capacity, and performance. Lakme 250K represents her sire well in exhibiting all these traits. Plus, she has an attractive dark red haircoat and dark foot adding value to her beautiful Angus phenotype. We believe this stylish bred heifer can work in any environment and will be an excellent front pasture addition to any herd.

LOT 21 - CD LAND AND CATTLE
A long bodied female with a pedigree combination to make a functional momma cow. The Selena cow family made an integral contribution to the foundation of our cowherd and can still be found in many pedigrees today because they are honest, functional and hard working momma cows. Sired by Red YCR Grindstone Amber 1948G, a herd bull who has left with not only very marketable bull calves but after calving his first set of daughters, we believe very practical females as well.
Vet called 35 days pregnant on July 28th
LOT
The Karama cow family has been an anchor in our herd over the years. This cow family, we think a lot of with the power, performance and productivity that has kept them thriving over the years. 335D might be one of the stoutest Pure Product daughters you will find in pastures anywhere, his maternal abilities have been noted as one of his greatest attributes. Give 335D your consideration as a proven matron that has the bone, power and frame with her overall soundness to start a new cow family or perhaps be the dam to your next herdbull. Oh, one more thing she’s as gentle as you can make them as well.

BORDER BUTTE 23
With it being years since we have consigned to the Chinook sale, Shane suggested we make Dale squirm with a deep deep pick… the bred heifers. Admittedly being cattle hoarders and not wanting to sell any of them, this is a tough choice but we also want to make sure the buyer is going to be happy with their purchase. So with that, the pick of the bred heifer pen is open! This bred heifer group might be as strong as we’ve had in a long time from time trusted cow families such as the Eves, Atlantas, Blackbirds, Countess and most of all the Marions which are definitely famous in the Angus world. The females spend the summer down at One Four and are certainly used to traveling big country to make a living. Proper structure is a must when grazing 4-5000 acre pasture.
Selection is due by Dec 1st to allow the new buyer to get their purchase home as calving starts in early January. 50 heifers in total to pick from.
The service sires to the heifers include Tex Playbook, S Architecht, Hart Outlier, Sitz Stellar with the walking sires being WA Tahoe and Lamb’s Sure Thing. Bulls were pulled June 6th.

LOT 24 - THISTLE RIDGE RANCH
Because our Black Angus division is smaller, we’ve always chosen bulls that that could go to work on both the cow herd and the heifer pen, with maternal being the # 1 focus every time. I can’t remember the last time we pulled a calf out of a black cow, and the bulls have always been multifaceted enough to work anywhere we put them. TR Blackbird 2110K is a stouter made daughter of our Hi Def 168G bull, and comes from a long line of great uddered, great footed females. Her service sire is a super long made, awesome dispositioned bull we got from North Point Angus. This should really make a nice cross.
Deer Valley Growth Fund daughter with a yearling index of 132. She is feminine and clean-fronted from a line of cows with consistently good fertility. The service to Rainmaker 4404 should be interesting as his progeny have caught the eye of many over the last year. Legendary and Limelight close up in her pedigree. Think of the possibilities!

We gave Shane free reign in the heifer pasture and did he spot a good one here! Timeless females are exactly that and she will make a mother cow no doubt. Service sires are a collection of great genetics selected to enrich the program going forward, Showman, Ashland, Growth Fund and the list goes on!
