AEON This redesigned air purifier reduces environmental impact by 70% compared to the current model. Sustainability | 5 months

Strategies Utilizing the Okala method, the original unit is torn down and itemized, in order to create a life cycle analysis to which concepts can be compared with. A strategy is developed, where areas that will drastically reduce environmental impact are developed into concepts.

Material Impacts: Secondary recycled aluminum and cork are the primary materials. Manufacturing: The extruded body houses the necessary ducting and mounting points, reducing part count Distribution: The cork ribbing acts as product packaging when in transit, requiring thinner cardboard boxing. When in use the ribs act as finning for air. Longevity: Easy to remove washable filter cartridge, existing overbuilt internals and durable materials allow for a long life. Ageless design language. End of life: Easy to dismantle ribbing and internals due to extrusion housing, where everything can be pulled out horizontally and recycled.

Why Cork?

11

monumental air The design language creates a sense of radiance and monumentality. The contrast between high tech aluminum and a tree bark are conversation starters that engage the user and create a long term bond.

12

Elegant touch based control simplify interaction with LED’s that indicate state. Washable filter greatly increases lifespan of device and is easily accessible via a tray.

13

PAANEE This water bottle aims to bring comfort and uplift the homeless population of San Jose, by having water perform multiple functions. Social Issue Solution | 5 months

17

Humanizing data Using City census data, the target user is discovered and further interviews shed light on their needs and perspective on the problem. Qualitative research on how user’s utilize items, further provide an understanding of street life.

5000+ total homeless

75% un-sheltered

18

3950 2+ years on the street

80% mentally ailed

92% of street homeless are men

40% have addiction

“Even though I’m homeless, style [and being cool] is still important” “I wish I had something that makes me relatable and grounded [in society]” “Keeping hydrated is my biggest [everyday] struggle on the street ” -interview with Grant, homeless for 6+ years & recovering addict

19

A deep dive Having established that hydration is the main issue facing a large segment of the street homeless, a deeper investigation is launched to validate that hypothesis. Mind mapping and more quantitative research help find pain points. All research led to a set of requirements for concepts development.

access

containment

storage

dosage

Public drinking fountains are within the daily 2 mile trek that the homeless endure. The issue is filling 4-6 bottles in a manner which was never intended.

Plastic PET bottles are everywhere and are not fit for long term use and exposure to UV degrades the chemistry, leading to contaminated water. Furthermore there is no sense of stability in a PET bottle.

Shopping carts & backpacks dominate this space and space is at a premium. Having individual bottles is a nuisance and after being exhausted of their contents, become an inefficient way of storing water.

Doctors recommend 2L of water per day for optimum health. Street life and addictions only impair temperature regulation and raise the daily dosage.

20

MAIN REQUIREMENTS...

Easy carry | Integrate into other useful items | Multiple fill methods | Recommend /Track how much to consume | rugged | Break away from bottle form

THAT SHOULD... Keep water contaminant free | Ergonomic | Low price, High value | Permanent long term | Perform more than simply containing water | Aesthetics

BUT MAY ALSO...

Filter water | Replace entire bottle collection with one product | Connect with user on emotional level | Humanize | Provide temperature control

The product must uplift the user and act as an object of inspiration and pride; something that affirms their humanity. The chosen factors are vanity and adaptability. Vanity is seen through the lens of fashion and how this bottle will catch the attention of the public, instead of simply allowing this issue to be ignored. Adaptability is crucial, the bottle must do more than holding water, for it to be desired and cherished. Existing means 21

Making water do more Inspired by down jackets, the concept of having water in connected pockets & perform comfort functions, began here.

Water is stored in bladders atop the shoulders to act as padding for backpack straps and allow quick access for drinking. Relation to fashion accessory can create opportunity for homeless artists to create statement pieces to raise awareness.

Water is stored in encapsulated sections that can be rolled into a bottle or stored flat. The surface area can be used as a sitting surface. The objective here is for water to conform to a variety of storage spaces.

finding character Ideation & detailing focused on creating a form that confirmed the inspiration and functionality of a protective case that allows external attachments.

Initial concepts dealt with determining how to focus on the modularity of the case: shape coding, drop in pieces or sliding pieces. A sliding rail was seen as the most secure

40

Weight will play a significant factor with modules, thus the actual case is lightened by means of a skeletal construction.

A T-channel allows secure module fitment. Power and data are provided through contacts that meet, akin to a camera hotshoe or electrified third rail.

Anodized 6061 Aluminum is the selected case material for rigidity for thin features and requisite precision for the rail. 41

Vital technology

Four key vital signs determine health status. Changes in these values will indicate health issues. Heart Rate: Rate and Rate of change can indicate stress or infection.

Temperature: Variations may indicate infection.

Oxygenation: Hemoglobin levels are indication of absorption of oxygen.

Blood Pressure: Overall heart health and activity levels.

SPONSORED UI/UX PROJECT This digital UI/UX project involves creating an online training module for a Seattle based caregiver volunteer service to improve their new recruit’s knowledge of what volunteering entails in a more efficient and fun manner. Interaction Design | 5 months Team of 3 students + 1 faculty advisor

Understanding the client

Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC) serves as a link between the people in the community who need help and those who are able to help. Their Volunteers provide transportation, caregiver support and assistance to seniors and others. Essentially, they help fill in the gaps so that people can live as independently as possible. This online training module will guide them in what they can do as a volunteer.

prototyping Wireframes are created to work out the logic and structure of interaction and navigation. Furthermore, any repetitive or unintuitive interacts are observed and sorted. Wireframes are created in Axure to view interactions in real-time.

A majority of content is in animated video form. As a result, consistent iconography is developed to convey information along with a narrated track, kindly recorded by a former MSNBC radio host. This engages the user and facilitates active learning and maintains enthusiasm.

76

Content is finalized in narrated video form for complex content and interactive icon matching for simple content. The content consists of the key points taken from the organization’s handbook on procedures and discussion with the clients.
