Limina: the threshold of experience
Until 26 January 2014
A Queensland University of Technology and Pinnacles Gallery co-curated exhibition. The Games of Art investigates how artists are using the mechanisms of games and art to reflect and express the socio-cultural ideas of our time. Games are no longer recognised merely as forms of entertainment or toys, but are increasingly accepted as cultural artefacts that contribute critically to cultural discussions. This shift illustrates how games have become a platform for creative expression and conceptual thinking about the world around us.
18 July - 14 September 2014
Uli Liessmann’s Life Unframed is a showcase of the last ten years of the artist’s dedication to his art practice. Featuring works on paper, the exhibition holds a mirror to society; while Uli has developed his own narratives for all of the works, the gamut of issues they address can be interpreted in any number of ways, dependant on the viewer’s own personal experiences.
Dr. Donna Foley’s exhibition Limina explores the threshold of experience of new places over a decade of travel. The exhibition is, in essence, a travelogue, the layout representing pages or even chapters of a book, each exploring often invisible elements that contribute to the physiographies and psychographics of a place. An enduring interest in the relationship between the visual and verbal persists, however, Limina is perhaps a more ambitious exploration of experience through the use of visual stimuli and metonym to trigger responses beyond the visual.

7 February - 30 March 2014 Glide is a collaboration between Townsville-based interdisciplinary artists Robert Crispe, Michelle Hall and Jo Lankester, inspired by the Lilienthal Glider. Together the three artists will present a large scale wing and digital mapping exhibition which will fill the Pinnacles Gallery space, transforming it into a floating, otherworldly experience.
The 2014 Children’s Exhibition centres on the vibrant and engaging sculptures of Melbourne-based artist Troy Emery. The sculptures depict animals as we’ve never seen them before, using impossible combinations of form, colour and materials. Troy Emery: into the wild explores the complex relationship between animals and humans, with humans often viewing animals not only as living things, but also as companions, and as decorative objects through fashion, patterns and taxidermy.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.

Renegades: Outsider Art is a KickArts Contemporary Arts touring exhibition created in partnership with Arts Project Australia and funded by Visions of Australia. Outsider Art is an emerging genre that describes art forms derived from improbable or marginal places, arising from raw impulse and urges of the heart. Featuring a kaleidoscope of images and artists’ stories, the works in Renegades come from makers with intellectual disabilities, others in community care, psychiatric settings, outer geographical reaches, and free spirits. The show underlines the creativity of ‘unlikely’ makers, mostly lacking academic instruction.

The exhibition Australian Modernists features works from the City of Townsville Art Collection – such as 2014’s signature image by James Wigley – which stem from one of the most celebrated and turbulent art periods in the nation’s history. Modernism, having been introduced to Australia in the mid-1910s through migrants and overseas exhibitions, lasted five decades and coincided with world wars, severe economic depression, and major advances – both technologically and socially.
31 October - 7 December 2014 Curated by Enviropairs, TREE features works by artists Bernadette Boscacci, Kath Cornwall, Marion Gaemers and Robyn Sweeney. The exhibition’s central motif unifies each artist’s profound interest in the natural environment. Whether exploring growth and seed distribution as a metaphor for trade and networking; utilising the tree as a collaborator; or reading scars as marks of experience, each artist explores notions of sentience.

Lankester’s work is represented in the National Gallery of Australia Print Collection, Artbank, and in public and private collections throughout Australia and overseas.
In Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill, Queensland artist, Sue Smith (who lived in Townsville in 2011-12) composes her own ukiyo-e, a floating world of contemporary experience. The paintings contemplate the bittersweet beauty of experience, with the timeless, immoveable hill as backdrop to the constant flux and impermanence of all things.
