BACKGROUND The biennial festival, The Percivals, is North Queensland’s own portrait celebration, and grew from a single competition staged at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in 2007. From 2008, The Percivals became a biennial painting competition, and 2014 saw the most significant expansion of the project with the introduction of a photographic competition held at Pinnacles Gallery. Townsville’s galleries pride themselves on being firmly embedded in the Townsville community and since its inception The Percivals has been an open competition for artists. While showcasing the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by Australian artists, the competition has also given many emerging artists and residents from Townsville and around Australia an opportunity to engage with portraiture and share their expressions of themselves and those close to them. Thanks to the generosity of Glencore and other sponsors, the painting prize has
steadily grown in stature and prize monies over the years, from $3,000 in 2007 to the current $40,000 acquisitive prize. DUOMagazine has sponsored the $10,000 acquisitive photographic prize since the exhibition’s introduction in 2014. The significant value of both of these prizes has seen The Percivals attract entries from within and outside the region, including a number of international entrants. Across the years participating artists have presented varied styles and approaches to the contemporary portrait - from abstracted images and cool conceptualism to smooth realism and the energetic aura of thick, impasto oils executed with broad brush and palette knife. The variety of works presented means there is something on show to suit every taste, while the growing suite of acquisitive prize winning works now held in the City of Townsville Art Collection is indicative of this impressive range.

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize Perc Tucker Regional Gallery 6 May - 10 July 2016
DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize Pinnacles Gallery 13 May - 10 July 2016
2016 saw The Percivals maintain the momentum created in 2014, when the exhibition was first presented as a citywide celebration of portraiture.
local government area, in celebration of Townsville’s 150th anniversary (T150).
This year’s festival was once again underpinned by two major exhibitions; the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize presented at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, and the DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize presented at Pinnacles Gallery. The exhibitions both proved popular, enticing entrants from within the Townsville region, all corners of the country, and international applicants. A challenging pre-selection process resulted in 145 paintings whittled down to 94 works for display in the final Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize, while 61 photographic portraits were selected from an initial 112 entries in the DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize. A publication depicting all finalists’ works was again produced for The Percivals. Beyond the major $40,000 acquisitive painting prize and $10,000 acquisitive photographic prize, an additional prize was offered in 2016 for each exhibition. These prizes were open only to artists residing in the Townsville local government area, who had depicted a sitter who also resides in the Townsville
Complementing the major exhibitions were a number of public programs, fringe activities and linked exhibitions. These included talks by the respective exhibition judges, Ross Searle (former Director of both Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and the University of Queensland Art Museum) and Professor Anne Marsh (Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne); an In-Conversation with artist George Fetting and his sitter, media personality Lee Lin Chin; the annual Philip Bacon Guest Lecture delivered by esteemed guest Kim Sajet (Director of Washington D.C.’s National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian); numerous workshops tailored to all ages; roving portrait artists; gala launches; sponsor’s previews; the ever-popular Glencore Percival Animal Portrait Prize; street art projects; and a collaborative paste-up project with local community group LensCap Crew. More detail about these various projects is included later in this Exhibition Summary. Combined, The Percivals recorded over 20,000 guests through the major exhibitions and public programs, with many more viewers of projects in the urban environment. The festival also enjoyed considerable coverage locally and nationally.

AWARDS The winner of the 2016 Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize was announced at a gala celebration at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, which attracted 609 excited guests. Lisa Adams from Queensland was awarded the $40,000 Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize for her stunning self-portrait Revelation. Local artist Barbara Cheshire was the recipient of the $10,000 Townsville 150th Anniversary Portrait Painting Award for her impressive portrait of Loma Thompson. The Townsville 150th Anniversary Portrait Painting Award celebrated that achievements of the region’s artists and unearths the unique stories of the local sitters they portray. It was a particularly fitting result, as Cheshire was also the inaugural winner of The Percivals in 2007. Judge Ross Searle, a former Director of both Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and the University of Queensland Art Museum, had an incredibly difficult task. The 2016 Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize exhibition showcased works by both established and emerging artists, with a multitude of styles and mediums displayed across both levels of Perc Tucker. Lisa Adams was elated with winning the $40,000 Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize, stating “I try to create honest paintings that speak both about my own personal experience as well as the larger human condition. Love and loss, success and failure, anguish and happiness, violence and tenderness, are all talked about in my work.”
Paul Taylor, Manager, Glencore Townsville Copper Refinery, announces the 2016 winner of the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize
Mr Searle was incredibly impressed with the quiet beauty of Adams’ artwork, of which he said “the strong narrative element in Lisa Adams’ painting connects to her personal journey as an artist and the resolve and commitment she brings to her work. Her processes recall the approach of Photorealists such as the American
Chuck Close who, in the 1960s and 1970s, conscripted photographs as the basis for their paintings. While grounded in reality, Adams’ frequently fantastical imagery has seen her work compared with Surrealism.” Paul Taylor from Glencore said, “Glencore are delighted to once again partner with Gallery Services, Townsville City Council to deliver the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize. This exhibition is clearly a highlight in northern Australia’s arts and cultural calendar and undoubtedly one of Australia’s leading portrait prizes. My congratulations to Lisa Adams as the winner of this year’s Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize.” Local artist Barbara Cheshire was honoured to win the Townsville 150th Anniversary Portrait Painting Award. Cheshire’s winning work was a portrait of Loma Thompson, a tireless community crusader and Cheshire’s mother-in-law. Cheshire said of Loma, “She was heavily involved in the establishment of Kindergarten Headstart and the Townsville Women’s Shelter long before government funding was available for these services, and they relied on the hard work of volunteers. Ever the quiet achiever, Loma retrained as a secretary when her children grew older, and went to work at the Townsville Teachers College, and then James Cook University until she retired in 1987. Whilst working there she undertook study and graduated with a BA majoring in History and French in 1986. A survivor of breast cancer, Loma turned her energies to helping other women who underwent surgery for the same disease, providing post-operative support as a hospital visitor for the Breast Cancer Support Group. When her husband needed treatment for prostate cancer, Loma became active in the Prostate Support group as well, helping out with the Relay for Life and other support functions.”

Impressed by Cheshire’s work, Mr Searle commented, “it has been said of Barbara Cheshire that, in every work, the driving force remains the same: representing ‘complete human experience’ – the marriage of the physical and the spiritual. Thus, we have the integration of senses and soul. This recognition and celebration of the spiritual is a theme that has underpinned much of Cheshire’s artistic career. The portrait has a photorealist optic that seeks to enter into the inner world and outer visage of the subject.” Shane Fitzgerald, Manager Gallery Services, congratulated both winning artists, stating “both Lisa Adams’ and Barbara Cheshire’s works stand out in an incredibly strong field of finalists. I would also like to thank our esteemed judge, Ross Searle for his hard work in choosing the winners.” Fitzgerald was also pleased to announce “as both the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize and the Townsville 150th Anniversary Portrait Painting Award are acquisitive, both Revelation and I Remember will be entering the City of Townsville Art Collection. They will be beautiful and powerful additions to the already impressive portrait collection held by the City”.

A week following the launch of the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize, Brett Canet-Gibson was awarded the $10,000 DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize for his stunning portrait The Life of Riley. Local artist Chrissy Maguire was the recipient of the $5,000 Townsville 150th Anniversary Photographic Portrait Award for her fun and unique portrait Monty and his Man – Pipe, avoiding Box Jellies by standing still. Professor Anne Marsh from the Victorian College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne had an incredibly difficult task in selecting the winners. Professor Marsh was impressed with the diverse array of styles and approaches to photographic portraiture taken by artists, stating “The Life of Riley is a contemporary portrait encapsulating the strength, defiance and fragility of youth. Here a young male, soon to be adult, appears to search out the gaze of the viewer but it is uncertain whether he sees us. His eyes seem strangely vacant or preoccupied, the set of his mouth and the flare of his nostrils suggest a degree of hostility as he looks out from this frame and into a world. But the emotion is ambiguous: sadness, distain, distress and distrust vie for attention”. Brett Canet-Gibson said his winning portrait highlighted an important social issue; bullying. “Throughout the last year leading up to his teenage years, Riley had been mercilessly bullied at school. He had been knocked out inside the classroom kicked, punched and verbally abused in the schoolyard, and followed and harassed on his way home,” said Mr Canet-Gibson. “After endless meetings with the School Principal to no avail, Riley’s parents decided to sell the family home and move away from the area. Taken in his backyard, this image was made on the evening prior to their departure for New Zealand.”

Professor Marsh, who said “Monty and his man – Pipe is a quirky black and white fine art print that tells a local story about living in Townsville. Maguire’s skill as a photographer is clear in the subtle shades of grey and the textural detail of fur, skin, beard and water. But it’s the subject matter that gives the picture its narrative power as we start to imagine the life of the man with his dog. There’s a nonchalant ‘being here’ that gives the image a Zen sensibility but it’s saturated by an ordinariness that would shake off such pretensions”. Ms Maguire said of her work, “I asked Monty’s friend if I could photograph him and he enthusiastically agreed – we discussed the possibility of evening sunlight (no) and we decided on the highest tides in the morning. It was a wonderful shoot and I wish I could show the rest of the story. The day came – it was grey and bright all at once – and Monty put on a great show. He is the old king pin of the dogs”.
During The Percivals, Helen Caldwell was announced as the winner of the Glencore Percival Animal Portrait Prize exhibition for her work, Staying Alive. Sunday 10 July marked the closing of The Percivals, and following that came the announcement of the final two prize recipients voted for by exhibition visitors. Rosana Kersh, a noted Townsville-based photographer, took out the Townsville City Council People’s Choice Award for her work, an image of her brother Sean titled Big Kahuna. The photograph collected a winning total of 41 votes. Tessa McOnie from Fremantle, Western Australia, was the successful artist in the Townsville City Council People’s Choice Award from the Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize for her work Untitled. McOnie received 223 votes in a competition designed to enable exhibition visitors to voice their opinion on the best work on show.

DUOMagazine Publisher/Owner Scott Morrison said “DUOMagzine is proud to once again be supporting the DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize”. Shane Fitzgerald, Manager Gallery Services congratulated both winning artists, saying “2016 marks the second year of the DUO Magazine Percival Photographic Portrait Prize and the award is growing in both strength and popularity. This year we received entries of the highest calibre from right across Australia”.

FRINGE EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS Coinciding with this year’s display of The Percivals were a series of Fringe Events and Linked Exhibitions, expanding the reach of the event beyond the Gallery setting into the public realm, and establishing a true festival of portraiture.
As such, LensCap Crew made a small selection of founding families in the region, with each participant focussing their attention on one or two families, sourcing photographs, and penning short historical overviews.
The Glencore Percival Animal Portrait Prize provided a fun exhibition that aimed to share the spotlight and capture the personalities of our scaly, feathered, and furry friends. Importantly, the exhibition also continued to encourage accomplished works that clearly illustrate the affection with which we view our pets and wildlife.
The resulting project included 24 pasteups from historical photographs installed at 16 CBD locations, and 8 locations in suburbs connected to the depicted family. A map was produced to enable viewers to locate the works, while a small publication proved extremely popular.
The biennial exhibition, which offered a $1,000 prize, has continued to enjoy support from major sponsor Glencore, and is warmly received by Townsville residents. The 2016 winner was Helen Caldwell for her work Staying Alive. The exhibition was launched and the prize announced at a light lunch function, which also included a wildlife display by Ranger Dan of Billabong Sanctuary. Following on from Faces of Townsville, the highly successful collaboration with ABC Open undertaken in 2014, Gallery Services teamed with local community group LensCap Crew to present Families of Townsville. The project took portraiture to the streets, and through research conducted by LensCap Crew also traced the history of some of the city’s founding families, coinciding with Townsville’s T150 celebrations. LensCap Crew is a small community group with a shared passion for storytelling projects, and Families of Townsville was not intended to investigate every significant family that has helped build our city. Simply, too many people have made lasting contributions.
Extending on the figurative paste-up focus, Gallery Services also worked closely with acclaimed Australian street artist Baby Guerrilla to conceive and install a new work in Ogden Street. In discussing her practice, the artist stated, “Over the past couple of years I have sought to create a series of works liberated from the constraints of the standard picture plane. My intention is to make my work appear to defy gravity and to evoke a sense of wonder, freedom and escape.” Baby Guerrilla’s new work complements other Ogden Street works by the RUN Collective, Beastman, and ROA, creating a key CBD attraction for locals and tourists alike. A further outdoor exhibition, The PEOPLE’S Percival, was displayed on the flags lining Flinders Street in Townsville’s CBD. The portrait images were submitted by members of the public whom wished to recognise and celebrate a family member, friend or colleague. Further initiatives included an exhibition of photographic portraits by local students, investigating wearable art, displayed in the Townsville Bulletin Square light boxes, and an interactive sticker trail throughout Flinders Street.
