THE HISTORY OF:
47
Chop Sticks
3/4 Page
Chopsticks, two long thin sticks, were developed as early as the 3rd Century BCE in China. The Chinese word for such implements meant “quick ones,” or “quick sticks,” so the English translation became “chopsticks.”
It’s possible that chopsticks were developed when people cooked their food in large pots which retained heat well, and hasty eaters broke twigs off trees to retrieve the food.
By 400 BCE, a large population and dwindling resources forced people to conserve fuel. Food was chopped into small pieces so it could be cooked more rapidly, thus using less fuel.
Also the Chinese had a food tradition, believing that it was barbaric to serve food that resembled the original animal and uncouth to carve up a carcass at the table. The Chinese took care of that unseemly chore out of sight in the kitchen
and served food already diced and sliced, ready to eat, so there was no need for knives and forks at a Chinese dinner.
Confucius may have influenced Chinese utensil selection with his nonviolent philosophy and discouragement of knives at the dinner table.

Or False?
Asperagus Fries?
PHOTO: Dan Winters-Health Magazine
False to date anyway...
I don’t see ordering a large “Mc Asperagus Fries” at the Drive-thru anytime soon. -lol
Why this has not happened is probably obvious on many levels yet I do believe it should be a fact! Cost and demand:
1- Cost is probably around Too High.
2- Demand is probably very LOW.

Produce Codes
What is a Price Look-Up (PLU) code? PLU codes are 4 or 5 digit numbers which have been used by supermarkets since 1990 to make check-out and inventory control easier, faster, and more accurate. They ensure that the correct price is paid by consumers by removing the need for cashiers to identify the product; e.g., whether or not it is conventionally or organically grown. They are primarily assigned to identify individual bulk fresh produce (and related items such as nuts and herbs) and will appear on a small sticker applied to the individual piece of fresh produce. The PLU number identifies produce items based upon various attributes which can include the commodity, the variety, the growing methodology (e.g. organic) and the size group.
The 4-digit PLU codes for produce are assigned randomly within a series of numbers within the 3000 and 4000 series. There is no intelligence built into the 4-digit code. For example, no one number within the 4-digit number represents anything in particular. The 4-digit codes are for conventionally grown produce. 5-digit codes are used to identify organic or genetically modified produce. The prefix of ‘8’ would be placed in front of the 4-digit code for genetically modified produce and the prefix of ‘9’ would be placed in front of the 4-digit conventionally grown code for organic produce. You will not see the 5 digit codes in the PLU codes database since they are simply prefixes added to the conventionally grown produce PLU codes.
PLU codes are assigned by the IFPS (International Federation for Produce Standards) after rigorous review at both the national and international levels.
What is the International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS)? The International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) is composed of national produce associations from around the globe.
The long term objective of the federation is to improve the supply chain efficiency of the fresh produce industry through developing, implementing and managing harmonized international standards. source: http://www.plucodes.com/faqs.aspx#q1

Don’t treat the servers badly. It makes you look common.
Don’t eat chicken or chops with your fingers.
Don’t point with your cutlery.

“The Food” Etiquette Lesson #6:
You must not start eating until everyone has been served.
If there are a large number of guests, the hostess may indicate that you may begin before everyone is served.
If this is the case, you should begin.
If you take a mouthful which contains something you cannot swallow, you should excuse yourself and remove it in privacy. Absolutely do not do so at the table table and never place it in your napkin or on your plate for a ll to see.
If you are eating something that has stones or pips in it, you may use your forefinger and thumb to remove them from your mouth. Place them on the side of your plate.
You must never use a toothpick at the table, nor should you blow your nose.
If you have something stuck in your teeth that you must remove, excuse yourself and go to the bathroom to remove it. It is also acceptable to remove bones with your fingers.
Do not salt your meal before you have tasted it; it is an insult to the chef/ hostess.
Small pre-dinner snacks must always touch your plate before being put in the mouth. Do not take it from the serving tray and put it straight in your mouth.
