A BIG HOUSE IN A LITTLE VILLAGE
Front. It has a total length of 606 feet, making it one of the longest country house façades in Europe.
Wentworth Woodhouse has a long and fascinating history. The original Jacobean house was the home of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, whose death warrant was signed by Charles I in 1641.
OVER 1,000 EMPLOYEES
When Thomas Watson-Wentworth inherited in 1723 he began building the western range in the English Baroque style. It soon went out of fashion, so, in 1734, before the West Front was finished, Henry Flitcroft was commissioned to build the Palladian East 04
DID YOU KNOW?
Wentworth Woodhouse HAS ONE OF the longest country house façadeS in EUROPE
As the house grew in importance and welcomed guests including royalty and the political elite, the 4th Earl Fitzwilliam altered the two wings by adding a third storey in 1782. The house boasts more than 360 rooms. In 1841 over 1,000 people were employed, ranging from coal miners, carpenters, masons and farm labourers, to gardeners, housekeepers, and more unusual jobs such as rat catcher and state bed maker. Wentworth Village was almost entirely dependent on the Big House, as it is known locally. WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE WHAT’S ON GUIDE - SPRING / SUMMER 2019
COAL MISFORTUNES
Coal helped to make the Fitzwilliams one of the richest families in the country, but fortunes turned when the industry was nationalised in 1947. After World War II, Lady Mabel Fitzwilliam, sister of the 7th Earl, brokered a deal to lease most of the house for an educational establishment. From 1949 to 1979, the house was home to the Lady Mabel College of Physical Education. The college later merged with Sheffield City Polytechnic, which eventually surrendered the lease in 1988.
HOUSE IN DECLINE
The house and 83 acres of land were put on the market in 1989 and were bought by Mr WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE WHAT’S ON GUIDE - SPRING / SUMMER 2019
Wensley Haydon-Baillie, a businessman, who lived here for 10 years. In 1999 it was bought by Mr Clifford Newbold, who embarked on a long programme of restoration. Following his death, the house was put up for sale and was bought by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust in 2017 for £7million. Wentworth Woodhouse is now a popular venue for guided tours, weddings and events, as well as a location for film and TV productions. The Trust are embarking on an ambitious project to repair and preserve the house and open more spaces to visitors. The total project is estimated to take 20 years and cost approximately £130million. 05

WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE WHAT’S ON GUIDE - SPRING / SUMMER 2019
RESTORING THE HOUSE, STABLES AND GROUNDS
some of this restoration work in action as part of our exciting rooftop tours programme (coming summer 2019).
The focus of the Trust’s work is to preserve and restore this grand house and extensive grounds. Our aim is to improve this historic site so that it meets the demands of the 21st century, whilst retaining its historical integrity and heritage for future generations to enjoy.
Work on new signage, car parking and lighting is also underway, though it may be some time until these are fully realised as there is much planning and fundraising to do.
Since the Trust took ownership in 2017, more than 100 investigative condition reports have been carried out – examining dry rot, drains, timber, stone work and masonry, ecology, asbestos, plasterwork and floors – giving us a greater understanding of the issues we face as we regenerate and repair the site. Work on repairing and replacing 4.2 acres of worn out roofs has begun and plans are now in place to begin major redevelopment of parts of the stable block.
All the work undertaken is being guided by specialist consultants, including structural, mechanical and electrical engineers, plaster and sculpture conservators, paint analysis and timber decay specialists. Please bear with us as we undertake these vital works and join us on this exciting journey to restore Wentworth Woodhouse to its former glory. JULIE READMAN

WENTWORTH GARDEN CENTRE HISTORIC GARDEN Wentworth Garden Centre is set within the extensive former 18th century kitchen gardens and pleasure grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse. After World War II, the garden sadly succumbed to decades of neglect and decay, but the creation of the garden centre in 1976 was the garden’s salvation. A continuous programme of investment over the past four decades has seen the garden restored to its former glory. Careful cultivation and a staged programme of
renovation and regeneration have seen the gardens elevated to RHS Partner Garden status. Visitors can now enjoy the pools and cascades of the Rock Garden, the topiary and herbaceous borders of the Italian Garden, as well as discovering the Millennium Maze and strolling through spring borders and a 75-metre-long wisteria arch. We are committed to further restoration work and development to bring these little known, yet truly beautiful, gardens back from the brink. We hope that you
will derive as much pleasure from visiting the gardens as we have over the years and through visitor support and our own investment we can leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
GARDENING The garden centre’s success and reputation has been built upon the choice and quality of plants on offer year-round and you may be surprised to learn that a large proportion of our plants are produced here onsite in our three-acre expanding modern nursery. Browse our large planteria, stocked with an unparalleled selection of plants, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on-hand to
inspire and assist you.
GIFTWARE Visit our gift shop to browse beautiful displays of clothing, kitchenware, books, greeting cards, artwork and more. Our buyers work tirelessly to source an unparalleled range of original and unusual, ontrend homewares from wellknown brands such as Dora Designs, Bomb Cosmetics, Emma Bridgewater and Parlane amongst many others. WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE WHAT’S ON GUIDE - SPRING / SUMMER 2019
People volunteer with us for many reasons – most often, as a way of giving something back to the community and the satisfaction of knowing they have contributed towards the house and its preservation for future generations. Volunteering with us gives you: • a challenge and an opportunity for personal development • an opportunity to learn new skills or to use your life-long skills • an opportunity to meet others and to make social contact.
At the same time our shop has proved popular and has moved to a larger space. Find the perfect present or memento, with many gifts made exclusively for the house and others taking inspiration from its historic furnishings and fabrics.

Visited the lovely tea room and sampled the sandwiches and scones whilst out walking in the area ... the house is beautiful and the tea room is a fantastic addition. The food was lovely (scones were to die for) and all at a very reasonable cost too. Served by lovely people and we can’t wait to return for one of the tours.
What a lovely day for gardening @Wentworth_ House. Sun lotion applied - in February?

Having only recently heard about this hidden gem I was fortunate enough to pay a visit. I went on The Garden Tour and one of The House Tours, both were led by a very knowledgeable, interesting and humorous guide called Reg. He gave us a huge amount of information, all of which was fascinating. The grounds are extensive with spectacular views and the house is incredible.
