What's On Spring/Summer 2020

WELCOME TO WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE Welcome to the Wentworth Woodhouse Spring/Summer What’s On Guide. As we enter this, our fourth year on site, we are able to respond to feedback from our visitors, helping us to understand who our audiences are and why they attend. This has allowed us to take the most popular events and develop them further whilst also ensuring that we are reaching new audiences with interesting and innovative ideas so as to ensure everybody is able to enjoy Wentworth Woodhouse. Our mission is to provide as much access to the site to as many groups as possible, and to find creative ways of engaging audiences with the incredible heritage Wentworth Woodhouse offers, sharing the stories this great house has to tell, be it through specialist tours, cinema, talks, lectures and even costumed balls! I am sure you will find numerous reasons to visit, and do know that with every event you attend, cup of tea you purchase and donation you may give, you are supporting us on what has to be the greatest heritage challenge of our generation. I look forward to joining you at the events included in this guide.

RESTORATION & DEVELOPMENT The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust purchased this grand house and 83 acres of grounds in 2017. Our aim is to improve this historic site so that it meets the demands of the 21st century, whilst retaining its historical integrity for future generations to enjoy. When we took over the site, we found that the Mansion, Stables, Riding School, Camellia House and the 83 acres were in a critical state of decay, with buildings harbouring asbestos, collapsed drains, dry rot and leaking roofs. With just one phone line, an intermittent internet connection, a handful of committed staff and a single vacuum cleaner, we began the mammoth task of raising this phoenix from the ashes. More than 100 investigative condition reports have been carried out — examining dry rot, timber, stone work and masonry, ecology, asbestos, plasterwork and floors — giving us a greater understanding of the issues we face as we regenerate and repair the site.

Anyone visiting the site recently and over the coming year will clearly see the scale of the restoration works taking place, given the enormous scaffold that now completely engulfs the central part of the historic East Front. The Phase Two contract being delivered by Robert Woodhead Ltd, forms the largest phase of the Treasury funded emergency works project. The scaffold will be in place for a further six months with the roof top work visible to those on the roof top tours who will also see the restoration to the urns taking place at ground level. We expect roof works to be completed in the summer 2020. We have recently introduced some temporary lighting to improve entry and exit to the house and we hope to make further improvements to our temporary car park. Over the coming years, these will be further developed to help support the growing popularity of the house. We thank all our visitors for bearing with us while we improve the house and the grounds.

Endless corridors, dark passageways and ghostly footsteps await you as you spend the night ghost hunting inside Wentworth Woodhouse with Haunted Happenings. Wentworth Woodhouse has been home to some of Britain’s most powerful families and has an ill-fated history being home to Thomas Wentworth, who met his untimely demise as advisor to Charles I. With family feuds, rivalry and many skeletons in the family closet, this house is a place of mystery and intrigue. Haunted Happenings will be working in the most active areas of the house during these overnight ghost hunts, where people have encountered ghostly footsteps, heard children laughing, and seen doors open and close by themselves. With so many recorded paranormal sightings and ghostly activity in these areas, we

hope to uncover the reasons behind who or what is haunting Wentworth Woodhouse. You will be the investigators for the night and will work in small teams to detect hauntings in this fascinating place. You will be given the tools and skills needed to elicit any paranormal activity from the areas we are working in and every opportunity to have your own ghost hunting experience. GEORGE & DRAGON

EXPLORE THE AREA

The George & Dragon is a traditional family country pub located in the heart of the historic village of Wentworth, South Yorkshire and has been serving the local community as an inn since 1804. With the house now open to the public and the Wentworth Garden Centre & Historic Walled Gardens open to visit, the village is a truly hidden gem; a destination in its own right, and a walker’s paradise. Visiting for the first time? Why not make the George & Dragon a central part to your visit? The pub offers an extensive menu of home cooked food, including classics

such as steak pie and fish and chips as well as a multitude of vegan and gluten-free options. Those fancying a tipple will be delighted to find a selection of traditional ales and lagers as well as over 30 gins and an array of malt whiskeys. Only two miles from Junction 35 of the M1 and within easy reach of the commercial centres of South and West Yorkshire, the George & Dragon is a great place to visit for a day out or relaxed evening drink or meal in a congenial environment. Your hosts Sarah & Mick look forward to your visit.

WENTWORTH GARDEN CENTRE Wentworth Garden Centre is set within the extensive former 18th century kitchen gardens and pleasure grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse. After World War II, the garden sadly succumbed to decades of neglect and decay, but the creation of the garden centre in 1976 was the garden’s salvation. A continuous programme of investment over the past four decades has seen the garden restored to its former glory. Careful cultivation and a staged programme of renovation and regeneration have seen the gardens elevated to RHS Partner Garden status. Visitors can now enjoy the pools and cascades of the Rock Garden, the topiary and herbaceous borders of the Italian Garden, as well as discovering the Millennium Maze and strolling through spring borders and a 75-metre-long wisteria arch. We are committed to further restoration work and development to bring these little known, yet truly beautiful, gardens back from the brink. We hope that you will derive as much pleasure from visiting

the gardens as we have over the years and through visitor support and our own investment we can leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. The garden centre’s success and reputation has been built upon the choice and quality of plants on offer year-round and you may be surprised to learn that a large proportion of our plants are produced here on-site in our three-acre expanding modern nursery. Browse our large plant area, stocked with an unparalleled selection of plants, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on-hand to inspire and assist you. We host a variety of events throughout the year. Be sure to check our website and social media to find out what’s instore, including Easter egg hunts, prize trails, animal encounters, family farm activities and more!

ROCKINGHAM ARMS Surrounded by miles of peaceful countryside, the Rockingham Arms is a 19th -century listed building offering oldfashioned charm alongside modern comforts, home-cooked local food and local beers and ales. The spacious beer garden proves very popular on sunny days and is a great location to bask in the sunshine after a walk around the village. With tribute nights, wine tasting and comedy evenings, this historic public house is the ideal venue for those wanting a home-cooked meal, a traditional pint or just somewhere to rest after a day in the village.

The pub offers daily food deals and features up to six guest beers on handpulled pumps, including some from Wentworth brewery. The venue is 3 star rated offering overnight stays, with rooms providing a bed and breakfast service. A flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi are included in each of the bright and refurbished room. Rooms are located in the country house opposite the main pub building.

CORPORATE We now have corporate social responsibility packages available suitable for both small and larger businesses. Your corporate group can help our teams in the garden or house to undertake important project work.

This can contribute to your corporate social responsibility objectives, for example community work or environmentalism, and provide fun team-building experiences.

OPPORTUNITIES An example day can include: Coach drop off at the front door and free coach parking thereafter. A tour of the grand state rooms, including the Whistlejacket Room and Marble Saloon. Talks, such as by our longest-serving resident and staff member, Bob Mortimer. Bob worked with the Earls Fitzwilliam as, among other roles, a carpenter. Learn the stories of the family first-hand and hear unique takes on the house’s strange and fantastical world during the past half century. Food packages and unique dining spaces for your group. A tour of the gardens rarely seen during the house’s time as a private residence. Your group can be guided through our Repton-designed garden and discover such wonders as the Camellia House and Ionic Temple.

Around half of our volunteers come from Rotherham, but others travel from Doncaster, Sheffield, Barnsley and Leeds. We have volunteers of all ages and from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some help us out once in a while, some help once a week and quite a few are here more often. We are now looking to expand our Housekeeping and Hospitality volunteer teams. Housekeeping volunteers support our Housekeeper by helping with general cleaning, vacuuming, dusting and tidying the large areas of the house currently used by the public. The role also includes helping to get the house ready in advance of and after an event. This could be a wedding, a private function or one of the many inhouse events hosted by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust. The housekeeping team supports us as extra eyes around the vast house, reporting any issues directly to the

Housekeeper so that they can be tackled sooner rather than later. Hospitality volunteers support our Hospitality Officer to offer a warm welcome to our group visitors. As we grow in popularity, coach companies and organised groups are starting to visit in greater numbers and we offer delicious buffets in a private room to make the experience just that little bit extra special. Facilitating tea and coffee and helping with the clearing up afterwards also forms part of this role. Washing up is key – a typical group might generate over 400 individual items that need washing, drying and putting away. To be part of our volunteering family, you’ll need to be at least 18 and enjoy getting stuck in to a variety of tasks, sometimes perhaps quite different to what you were expecting as the demands of the house change very regularly.

FRIENDS OF WENTWORTH WOODHOUSE The regeneration of Wentworth Woodhouse is arguably the greatest heritage project of our generation. Over the next two decades this exciting project will provide visitors with an opportunity to engage with the historic features, buildings and gardens in innovative and diverse ways, providing intellectual access for all, not just the few. The development will provide opportunities for training, upskilling, academic study and work experience. It will be a beacon for learning, for new approaches to integrating heritage and business. But the enormity of the challenge should not be underestimated. Your support is vital and we invite you to join us on this journey by becoming a Friend of Wentworth Woodhouse.
