Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects offers complete architectural services for projects of many types and sizes. The firm was founded in 1971 and has since grown. The experience of the partners spans several decades and includes museums, libraries, multi-unit residential, and many houses big and small throughout New England and New York. They listen to their clients. Understanding and interpreting their needs, dreams and aspirations is key to the architectural expression of a building project. They believe appropriate design develops through active, ongoing interaction with the client. For them, architecture is a delight and each new project an adventure. They enjoy the challenges presented by a broad range of projects. Their emphasis on the appropriateness of a design to its setting; on the craft of making buildings; and on responsive service is universally applicable to many building types. They appreciate a full range of architectural languages and styles. They enjoy the play between memory and invention. Design can incorporate the continuity of traditions and the excitement of the new. They enthusiastically embrace low-energy building and sustainable practices.

This year-round house sits on a rocky shoulder of a Cape Ann cove. The approach from the west only hints at the dramatic view that unfolds to the east. The house is oriented east to west, allowing for a dramatic enfilade of rooms to culminate in spectacular ocean views to the east. The view is withheld upon arrival, where the driveway is greeted by a courtyard and sheltered garden. The broad side of the house faces south, letting the procession of rooms on the first and second floors bask in natural light. The living room, master bedroom above, and lower level library each uniquely frame the picturesque view to the north and east, where the lawn tumbles down into craggy rocks and ocean below. A multi-story open staircase dramatically lights the core of the house on all three levels. A

balcony suspended off the living room recalls a ship’s prow and provides another space from which one enjoys the striking view. The house responds to its natural environment as well as the Shingle style traditions popular to the region. The stone foundation seems to grow out of the boulders on the rocky site and supports the wood-framed house. The site abuts the land of the historic, nineteenth century Peabody & Stearns house, KragSyde. The glass-filled stone archway at RockSyde pays homage to this famous neighbor. The choice of cedar shingles and dark green trim also echoes the local shingle style tradition.

Island off the New England Coast Chip Riegel

Island House distills the essence of its seaside summer community. Its neighbors, which date from the 1880’s through the 1920’s, are light-hearted and picturesque but understated vacation houses. Island House picks up on these traditions and updates them to accommodate the requirements of modern living. The clients wanted a new take on local shingle style traditions for this seaside vacation retreat. The round tower and gently flared gambrel roof give the sense of swelling volumes characteristic of the shingle style. The strong, continuous eave line helps to root the house to its site. This house takes full advantage of the ocean view with its large windows and French doors. The dramatic repetition of pointed dormers places paired windows on an angle to better capture the sweeping views to the water. A band of windows on the entry side wraps around the conical tower and continues onto a dormer, visually linking the separate forms. The rooms on the main floor flow easily one to the next. The kitchen opens onto the family sitting and dining area, the center of informal family living. All the main rooms face the water.

This seaside vacation house is from an essay in the imagery of New England shingled resort architecture. It belongs to a private association of about thirty-five houses occupying a small island connected by a narrow causeway to the Massachusetts coast. An architectural review committee with a handbook outlining recommended materials, colors, roof pitches, and window types oversees and approves new designs and also enforces the observance of building envelopes that have been drawn for each lot on the island. Architects’ design had to follow the letter of the law and also honor the spirit of the place. It was important to be a good neighbor in this close-knit community. The other houses, the oldest of which date back to the late nineteenth century, are simple and quiet. Though not necessarily small, they are generally horizontal in emphasis. Architects’ design uses a gambrel roof to bring the eaves down low while accommodating four bedrooms on the second floor.

The view of the water is to the north. They made the main part of the house a long, thin “bar”, giving the living room, family room, and two main bedrooms three exposures to take advantage of the north view and the southern sun. To create a place of arrival and a sheltered spot for a garden they organized a onestory wing of guest bedrooms and a separate garage around an entry courtyard. They set up a symmetrical approach centered on the stair tower of the house, with matching light monitors on the garage and guest wing flanking this axis. The monitors act as welcoming lanterns in the evening. The play of symmetry and asymmetry, formality and informality, was prompted by their clients and was partly a reference to their grandparents’ house across the island.

The office of Andre Tchelistcheff Architects bases its practice on conceptual refinement, attention to craftsmanship, detail, and stylistic fluency. With a rich portfolio of Classical work, ranging from historic restoration to new development, their experience has cultivated an approach to Classical design that is at once historically attentive and formally expressive. Every project is carried through with a fresh perspective, and as an opportunity to produce designs that advance the classical tradition. They develop resonant and elegant design solutions, best suited to the specific location as well as the historical, financial and programmatic parameters of the project. A goal of each project is to create rich and diverse architectural experiences, in details small and overall, in harmony with the locale and ideals of the client. The office has worked on significant private residences, including town houses in New York City, waterfront homes in the Hamptons, hotel concepts and designs for the St. Regis brands and André Balazs Properties. In addition to the North East region of the United States, projects have been located in the Caribbean, Utah, Florida, California, and Moscow, Russia.

John Saladino and Associates

This project involved a renovation and additions to an existing 650.3 square meter ocean front residence on Long Island, New York. The original house was a clash of styles built through the 1970’s and 80’s. Architects’ objective was to unify the discordant massing and variety of exterior materials. They used a consistent exterior treatment of cedar shingles, and added many new doors and windows, as well as deeper overhangs and

wraparound porches. The existing inverted boat roofs and square towers were retained and treated with the same siding and roof material. Removing partitions and opening up the entry hall and dining room to the view of the beach and ocean, the interior was completely renovated. John Saladino and Associates provided the interior decoration.

A new residence situated on a 129,499.4 square meter farm overlooking the Head of the Harbor on the Long Island Sound, New York. The client, an inventor and astronomer, requested a shingle style house that would accommodate the needs of his family, various workshops, and an astronomical observatory. The 2043.9 square meter residence was

designed to straddle two slopes bisected by an abandoned 18th century tree-lined lane from the harbor. Taking advantage of the views, the lower level under the first floor terrace was excavated for an indoor pool and accessory spaces, with the main public areas of the home above, oriented towards a meadow and the harbor beyond.

An 1672.3 square meter landmark Beaux Arts townhouse located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York. It was originally designed in 1916 by the noted architect and interior decorator Ogden Codman, Jr., who was co-author with Edith Wharton of the influential book The Decoration of Houses , published in 1897. Andre Tchelistcheff Architects were commissioned, in association with the office of David Anthony Easton, to fully restore the residence after decades of remodeling and neglect. All of the electrical

and mechanical systems were completely overhauled, while keeping intact the essential characteristics of the original house. Beyond the porte cochere there is a car turntable and hand operated lift in the garage, enabling several vehicles to be parked in the basement below. The historic facade, registered with the New York City Landmarks Commission, was restored to exacting specifications. The result of the renovation serves the needs both for a contemporary family and grand entertaining.

公司成立于 1982 年,有三个合伙人:McKee Patterson(美国建筑师协会 会员)、Stuart Disston(美国建筑师协会会员、美国绿色建筑认证资质)、 David Austin(美国建筑师协会会员),以及包括 5 名注册建筑师、3 名绿 色建筑资质认证工程师和 14 名绘图员(设计师)在内的 24 名员工。 Austin Patterson Disston Architects is a full-service architectural and planning firm with offices in Southport, Connecticut and Quogue, Long Island. Founded in 1982 the firm includes three partners: McKee Patterson, AIA, Stuart Disston, AIA, LEED GA, and David Austin, AIA, and a staff of 24, 5 registered architects, 3 LEED certified and 14 draftspersons/designers. The firm's work is largely focused on bespoke residences. "We feel confident doing a broad spectrum of styles and types: renovations, restorations, additions and new residences," notes Mr. Patterson. Their design approach respects the integrity of both the built and natural contexts that make every building site unique. The partnership brings to each project a thorough knowledge and understanding of architectural precedent and fresh design solutions that are appropriate to a project's context and responsive to the clients' needs and aspirations. "I would not say that the firm has a particular‘ cookie cutter ’style," explains Mr. Disston, "I can tell you what others have said: our work has an intimate scale, that even our larger houses do not seem imposing and that our interiors work together and are well tailored in their material detail." An AIA design award won by the firm includes a statement from jury member Terence Riley, then Curator of Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. ''At a moment when many architects are interested in history, this is a rare house to hit a note of authenticity and not simply stylistic revival. The architect knows the traditional language of architecture and deploys it quite well, and also knows when to slow down.'' They believe the statement aptly describes the philosophy behind their work.

Westport Residence

The design intent for this new residence overlooking the beach in Darien, Connecticut was to recall the relaxed and gracious early 20th century seaside life the shingle style embraced. Porches grace the front and side entrance. Two double-floor porches call for lounging. Built-ins and window seats encourage reading and gazing out at the water. Both the prominent corner site and sustainability concerns dictated the concept of a main house and a series of outbuildings: the pool/guest house and garage with playroom above. Architect McKee Patterson, AIA, chose to divide the program, placing the property in a historical vernacular of farmhouse with barn and outbuildings.

The interior spaces meet the homeowners request for both formal and informal spaces. “ There is a purposeful progression of textures from formal to informal,” notes Patterson. The paneled foyer, library, office and dining room with painted coffered ceiling are the formal rooms, while the living room with its mahogany bar, rustic thin-stone fireplace and more detailed ceiling makes the transition to the house’s more informal spaces. The kitchen and breakfast areas feature exposed wooden beams unpainted American clay walls and broad painted wooden wainscoting.

John Bessler Photography

It was an excellent match, a client who was an Anglophile and had lived in England and an architect, also an Anglophile, greatly inspired by the work of Edwin Lutyens, the British Arts and Crafts movement and English manor houses in general. The result is a 743.2m2 house “detailed but not overdone,” “broadly connected yet individuated spaces,” notes architect McKee Patterson, AIA, of the Southport-based Austin Patterson Disston Architects. This early 20th century British architecture accommodates a variety of details and materials which met with the client’s sensibilities. Set on a back lot away from the road, the drive leads to the front door and garage wing in an L-shape. The rear of the house presents the main view, overlooking an open field, and terraces sloping down to the pool. The facade presents a handful of materials that along with its astute scale create a house that is simultaneously unpretentious and grand. The exterior starts with stucco panels with heavy timber and upper wood shingles, moving to a lower level of thin stone and a foundation of several courses of red brick. Details on the exterior are abound. A course of round brick provides a protecting ledge against the rain; the peeks of the rear and garage feature charming dovecote vents. The interior as well features a variety of materials and details that work to fulfill the architect’s desire to balance this large house with an intimacy of scale. Public spaces are open to each other yet distinct spaces, all with detailed paneling: foyer, living room, formal dining room, library, and an inglenook, a small seating area off the living room around an open hearth glass mosaic fireplace. This type of intimate space was often found in Arts and Crafts houses. The daily used family spaces are easily accessible yet separated from the public spaces: the breakfast room, butler’s pantry, and kitchen, another gem with its large custom table sheathed in a pattern of walnut and burled walnut veneers and steel framed ceiling.

Taking inspiration from the Greene and Greene masterpiece, the Gamble House, this private residence represents a fusion of the Prairie and Craftsman movements. Hallmarks of these two distinctly American architectural styles include simplicity of form, use of local natural materials, and the visibility of handcrafted elements. Designed to appear as an extension of the land, the exterior is clad in a combination of red cedar shingles and ledger stone. A series of low-pitched roofs with broad overhangs and exposed brackets and rafters emphasize the home’s horizontal lines. Stone piers and massive timber columns with decorative metal banding support expansive porches. Ledger stone walls and columns unite the interiors and exteriors while wormy chestnut floors and cherry wood trim serve as a foundation for the natural color and materials palette. The home’s most dramatic space is a soaring two-story living room with wall of windows that overlooks an immense koi pond and gardens. On the opposite

wall, a large balcony balances the openness of the room. The steel beam that runs the length of the room was wrapped in wood and metal strapping, giving it the appearance of stacked timbers. At the far end of the room, a large rock, which was quarried on site and serves as the mantle for the ledger stone fireplace, underscores the home’s connection to the land. A team of talented artisans replicated elements from the Gambel House that include the curving cloud lift beam between the kitchen and living room, the central stair with intricate mortis and tenon joinery and the stunning Tree of Life stained glass triptych in the entry. Asian influences include dragon fly and lotus flower details on the metal work and decorative tiles, rain chains and lanterns.

An estate home of formal grandeur reflects the earlier era of Atlanta in the 1920s when her foremost families provided their homes with opulent public facades that all could be visually enjoyed from the public domain. Following Beaux-arts design principles, the five bay facades in the center surround the giant order columned temple. The excellent craftsmanship of sculpted limestone walls and trim is especially evident in the 4-meter Corinthian columns. Taking three years to quarry and sculpt in Indiana, they are the largest monolithic limestone columns in the city. The entry surround displays a composition of Italian Mannerist detailing with broken pediment, swags, cartouche and strapwork over Doric fluted columns. The garden facade recalls the inspiration of eighteenth-century Neo-Palladian work in England. The interior rooms are aligned in a formal layout with the entry axis terminating in the two-story salon. From the circular entry hall another cross axis connects the dining room with the library. The double-cube-height of the library with its walnut and iron

circular stair is inspired by George Vanderbilt’s Art Library in Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Jacques Brunet of Paris, former head of the French Iron Workers Guild, designed the wrought iron and bronze openwork and handrails throughout the interior and exterior of the home. His most dramatic work occurs in the majestic stair balustrade composed of gilded birds, cherubs, and floral motifs. All entertainment spaces are accessed from the terrace level and include a billiard room and pub, wine cellar and tasting room, home theater, shooting gallery, and an outside swimming pool. This project received a Shutze Award for Excellence in Craftsmanship from the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). The ICAA is the United States’ largest and most respected organization focused on classical architecture and design.

This stately stone residence is reminiscent of homes found throughout villages along the Dordogne River in southwestern France. Perched romantically on hillsides along the river’s edge, these structures are characterized by simple massing constituted of natural stone veneer with cut stone accents topped by flat red clay tile roofs. With its romantic and enduring qualities, the style perfectly lends itself to this home’s setting atop a wooded knoll along the Tennessee River. Through application of native materials similar to those found along the Dordogne, the home represents a regional translation of the style that is particularly well suited to its lush site. Existing serpentine brick walls, piers and wood gates at the entry drive were refurbished to create a suitably romantic approach through the gardens and woodlands of the property. As seen in the Dordogne region, the home is an amalgam of charming farmhouse rusticity with the thoughtful refinements of a chateau. Marked by minimal ornamentation and simple massing, the beauty of the symmetrical facade and subordinate structures is exhibited through the use of creamy yellow, rough-cut limestone from Wisconsin and flat-flashed clay roof tiles. Carved limestone provides an elegant counterpoint as exhibited at the breezeway columns, in the front entry surround,

and throughout the structure as window, door, and niche sills and lintels. Additionally, the decorative wrought iron ornamentation of the mahogany front door and transom echoes the iron detailing of the railings at the balconies and porches. The beauty of craftsmanship is also evident in the hand-forged steel and glass doors on the back elevation of the home that overlooks the river. Forming a cohesive whole, the interior architecture also embodies a blending of the rustic and refined. Public spaces are finely detailed as seen in the trim and millwork of the living room and library, in the hand-carved limestone mantle in the living room, in the wrought iron railing of the main stair, and in the groin vaults at the front entry and gallery. Family spaces exhibit a decidedly more rustic feel. Examples include a rough-cut limestone fireplace surround in the den, and stained reclaimed oak ceiling beams, corbels, and door headers in the kitchen and breakfast room. Inspired by the inimitable qualities of the Dordogne region, this home retains the timeless romance of the style, while incorporating domestic materials and responding to the finest attributes of its setting.

John Umberger, Mali Azima

Drawing inspiration from the crescent shaped elevation of Sir Edwin Lutyens’ Greywalls in Gullane, Scotland, this arts & crafts style house bridges the gap between traditional aesthetics and contemporary living. Initially viewed from an axial approach, the majestic main body of this 1,570 square meter home welcomes guests with its circular drive and symmetrical formality; while the smaller adjacent wings provide more intimate spaces for the residents and ancillary services. Inside, the private rooms balance the stateliness of the foyer, grand salon, and kitchen and keeping room, giving this large estate an unexpectedly homey quality. Upon entering through the curved stone facade, two cantilevered stone staircases flank the foyer and frame a view into the formal grand salon and beyond to the rear yard. Further into the private quarters of the home, the architecture assumes a more relaxed feel, always maintaining a strong relationship to the exterior landscape through the use of oversized windows. Richly stained oak flooring underfoot and timbers overhead further evoke the sense of history and connectivity to the land in an understated and elegant way.

True to the Regency style of early 19th century Britain, this 1,300 square meter private residence pays homage to the classical ideals of its Greek and Roman roots. An intentional lack of exterior ornamentation emphasizes the thoughtful scale, balance and proportion of the classic five-part structure. A palette of mahogany, cut limestone, and thickly coated brick reflects solidity and refinement. Subtle details, such as the decorative design found on the home’s circular windows and iron railings, reinforce the

orderly aesthetics of the Regency period. The clean lines and simple forms of the interior architecture and furnishings serve to create a cohesive whole. This project received a Shutze Award for Excellence in Residential Design over 929 square meter from the Southeast Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). The ICAA is the United States’ largest and most respected organization focused on classical architecture and design.

Jim Bartsch

A careful blending of the new and old elements, anchors this design firmly in the past while creating a modern sensibility and a promise of the future. The entry to this 2,350 square meter Italianate Villa is deliberately understated, allowing the house to reveal itself in a sequence of events. The winding private driveway leads to an intimate walled arrival court anchored at each corner by one-hundred-year old olive trees. The entrance facade, pilasters and front door are a Palladian derivative and are proportioned in the classical Tuscan order. The dramatic circular entry hall is 6-meter in diameter and features a winding cantilevered stair leading the eye upward to a full half dome and oculus. This detail is rarely seen because of the level of complexity and craftsmanship required for proper execution. A strong axial relationship draws the eye inward from the entry hall to the double-height salon and out to the skyline views. While classically proportioned and appointed in the highest quality materials, there is minimal architectural ornamentation and a subdued palette throughout. This technique creates an elegant backdrop for the owner’s collection of fine furnishings, art and antiques.

Poised high above the Chattahoochee River, the family estate nestles into the natural beauty of its varied terrain. The site suggested an architecture of subdued formality and thus the architects considered the work of the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and the Philadelphia firm of Mellor, Meigs & Howe as sources for inspiration. The approach to the house winds through a pine and oak forest. With cleft-faced Indiana limestone, Vermont slate roof and mahogany door and window trim, the building mirrors the native coloration of its surroundings. The arrival court is placed unpretentiously below the crest of the hill and the house’s asymmetrical massing creates the image of an estate grown over time. The magnitude of the country manor cannot be gained from any single view. A colonnaded trellis leading past a lap pool to a screened garden house breaks the extent of the garden facade. Views to the river below are gained from terraces and

planted pathways leading to a second garden house. The interiors mirror the significance of natural materiality already evident on the exterior of the house. Plain plaster walls are accented with smooth or rough limestone trim, and floors vary from wide heart pine boards to antique French terra cotta tile. The scale of rooms varies from intimate to grand. The projecting octagonal shape of the breakfast room accents the entry facade and is accessed immediately from the foyer. The intimate room inspired by the far more grand Winter Garden at Biltmore House in Asheville visually opens upward with a glass ceiling suspended between mahogany trusses and outward through mahogany French doors. The heart of the home is shaped like a medieval hall with clearstory windows, heavy timber trusses and a massive fireplace with a squared timber mantle supported on stone corbels.

John Umberger, Blayne Beacham

The Regency period, which flourished in Great Britain from 1811–1830, marked a time of renewed interest in the classical ideals of Greek and Roman culture. Relying more on sculptural massing, decisive detailing and careful proportions, this home pays homage to the refined elegance of the Regency style. The center of the home is flanked by two projecting wings that, along with low brick walls and hedges, define the fore court. The entry to the home is marked by a curved portico with a balcony and Palladian window above. A traditional combination of white brick with black custom wrought iron gates and bundled columns give the exterior a crisp aesthetic against the verdant backdrop of the landscape. The parapet roof, oriel window, and entry door with the rectangular transom and side lights are also details common to the period. The entry foyer, with its black and white marble floor and a curving Greek key cornice, set the tone for the home’s understated interiors. A sweeping stair leads up to a custom skylight that fills the main and upper floors natural light. Traditional moldings and paneling imbue the home with a sense of history and formality, while ebonized wood floors are an unexpected modern counterpoint on the main level. True to Regency style, each room features large windows that make skillful use of natural light and offer views to the gardens. House From Pool

John Umberger, Blayne Beacham

The variety of design solutions apparent in the work of Mitchell Studio reflects the many diverse environments around the country where the work is located. The range of regional influences, from climate and landscape, to building traditions and materials leads to a varied palate of form and detail. However, for Mitchell Studio the familiarity with the language of traditional architecture is not an end in and of itself but a point of departure. While there is a consistent classical backbone to the work, each project displays an interpretation of the language that is inventive and original. Process at Mitchell Studio also grows out of the traditions of the architectural past, beginning with a reliance on drawing as a medium of exploration. From the first conception of plan and elevation, to the curve of a molding profile, all the design works start with pencil and paper. The approach translates to built work that reflects a practiced draftsman's sensitivity to the weight of a line and the composition of light and shadow. It also demands a close look at every component part of a design to ensure a consistent, highly - crafted sensibility, an instance that every part informs the whole. There is no signature style in the work of Mitchell Studio, but if there is one characteristic that identifies a Mitchell Studio project is a consistent focus on proportions, and more specifically a proportion that scales to its inhabitants. It is builder's tradition rooted in a historian's familiarity with the language of architecture.

A summer house in the tradition of the turn-of-the-century cottages on Lee avenue and Lily Pond Lane, occupies land that offers access to the village and sweeping views across a salt water pond and the Atlantic Ocean. The design mixes the Georgian detailing typical of the oldest homes in the village with the informal massing of those that line the beach. Bent in plan to embrace an entry courtyard to the north, the house unfolds along the south to take maximum advantage of the ocean breezes and the summer sun.

Inside, the house is open and elegant. The paneled stair hall spills into a living room and dining room suite that are articulated with arched openings and coffered ceilings. A broad porch on the south side unites all of the first floor living spaces. Only one room wide for most of its length, the house is flooded with light from sunup to sundown.

Greenwich, CT

In the tradition of country houses built by New York City families at the turnof-the-century, this grand house is both serious and welcoming, muscular and elegant. On the entry side a symmetrical facade, marked by twin gables and a pair of field stone chimneys, is softened by a porch that stretches across the front elevation. On the reverse, those same gables extend into the landscape, bracketing a south facing terrace that extends living space into the garden. While the plan of the first floor is organized by a central axis that runs from the front door through the living room fireplace to the terrace beyond, to either side of the axis, the composition is more informal. The procession from front to back is accentuated by changes in section that juxtapose grand rooms and the more intimate. As the organization of the plan becomes more informal away from the central axis, numerous eddies in the circulation result in unexpected gathering spaces.

Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects/Builders (PSD) is an integrated architecture and construction firm led by architect and builder Peter Polhemus, AIA, founder and CEO; builder Aaron Polhemus, President and COO; and architect John R. DaSilva, AIA, Design Principal. As an integrated firm, PSD is a single entity that is both a professional architecture firm and a general contractor (sometimes called design/build). Through decades of experience, the firm's principals have learned that integrated architecture and construction services result in more harmonious working relationships and greater

Selected Work efficiencies than typical design/bid/build methods. Open, clear and honest communication that fosters trust and confidence is critical to PSD's success. Their approach streamlines the process of design and construction and takes architectural design beyond the pure realm of fine art into the more complex realm of practical art. The firm's commitment to excellence in both design and construction affords their clients budgetary, functional, and aesthetic value that is unmatched in the region in which they work - primarily Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and coastal Southeastern New England. This commitment, along with thoughtful management and highly creative thinking, is at the heart of their work. The result is a unique integration of timeless design and skillfully crafted construction. PSD also strives to meet clients' needs through creative approaches to aesthetics, site planning, context, program, regulatory constraints, and sustainability. The firm embraces these challenges, with all of their complexity and potential conflicts, because they understand that this leads to work of enduring value and substance. Site selection, integration of architecture and landscape, and permitting, are critical components in the successful outcome of every project. The distinguishing characteristics of each site are important factors that influence the design, and local regulations impose restrictions that must be thoughtfully addressed. PSD's experience in these areas, and their multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving, enable them to shepherd sensitive projects through difficult permitting. Many of their projects require one or more regulatory approvals (Conservation Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, Historical Commission, Board of Health, etc.). PSD assembles a team of appropriate consultants specifically suited to the regulatory needs of each project. This may include an attorney, engineer, landscape architect, and environmental consultant. PSD organizes and leads the team to maximize client investment, while remaining sensitive to regulatory realities and aesthetic goals. Inspired by the distinctive landscape and vernacular architecture of New England, PSD draws from a broad range of architectural history to create fresh interpretations of traditional approaches. The careful consideration given to each project is reflected in designs that are in harmony with the land, relate appropriately to both the neighboring context and the continuum of architectural history, and optimize light and view. The firm strives to create memorable, sustainable architecture with timeless appeal. Imagination, beauty, wit, playfulness, comfort, integration with the context, and precise functional accommodations are signature qualities that define their work. In the words of Robert A. M. Stern, renowned architect and educator: “The work of Polhemus Savery DaSilva beautifully melds the traditions of New England with the way we live today, affirming that an architecture of place trumps an architecture preoccupied with passing trends.” The value of PSD's work has been recognized through numerous regional and national awards for architecture, construction, and business management. They were named the National Association of Home Builders' 2010 National Custom Home Builder of the Year. They have been published widely, featured on several television shows, and are the subject of two books, Shingled Houses in the Summer Sun: The Work of Polhemus Savery DaSilva (Images Publishing, 2011) and Architecture of the Cape Cod Summer: The Work of Polhemus, Savery DaSilva (Images Publishing, 2008). The architectural design and construction process is extremely complex and can be fraught with uncertainties, risk, and potential for error. By providing a carefully formulated and fully integrated design and construction process, with intellectual ideas and artistic vision at its core, PSD helps clients avoid these problems. They offer greater control of each step, from inception to completion, than is possible with the design/bid/build process. This single source approach affords financial, functional, and artistic value that is unmatched in New England.

The property into which this house is nestled is off a winding dirt road in a hilly, remote, and wooded part of North Chatham on Cape Cod. Other than a fisherman’s shack at the water’s edge, no other structures are visible from the house. The clients were inspired by broad-roofed bungalows in wooded mountainous settings of the American West, the Adirondacks and rural Europe. They sought a grand woodland cottage that, while atypical on Cape Cod, still sat comfortably on their site specifically, and in the region generally. Polhemus Savery DaSilva Architects designed and built a unique and eclectic house based on these inspirations and on the special characteristics of the site. In the design, the large overhangs, exposed rafter tails, and Gothic tracery all recall the sheltering canopy of the surrounding trees. These elements also suggest the architecture of old family camp bungalows in northern New England, and allude to the Gothic Revival communities of the mid-19th century (such as Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard). Other influences came from 19th Century New England mill buildings and broadly gabled shingle style and Arts and Crafts houses. The rural, informal location is reflected in the layout of the house. On both sides the screen walls envelope a porté-cochère, under which the main entry door is located. Beyond the porté cochère is an auto court that serves two separate garages, one connected directly to the mudroom/secondary entrance and one connected, via a back-stair, to the owner’s painting studio above. The eclectic nature of the architecture reflects the eclectic tastes of the owners who collect both abstract and representational paintings, art glass, and model trains. The grand entry/stair hall is open to an art gallery space on the second floor. The gallery is above the porte-cochere and behind the screen walls, and connects to the studio to the southwest. On the entry side of the porté-cochère the plan contains densely configured service spaces (mudroom, laundry, etc.). Beyond them, the first floor stretches out southeast to northwest, with sweeping views and access to a deck that joins these living spaces outside. The jewel-box like sunroom on the first floor is a get-away at the far northeast corner of the site. It is pulled away from the main mass of the house to capture direct sun as much as possible. It is angled in plan to both face an opening in the trees to the view and to highlight the special nature of the space.

The owners of this house have eclectic tastes. She is an interior designer and he is the former CEO and current chairman of Knoll, the classic modern furniture manufacturer. They came to Polhemus Savery DaSilva requesting a place that was historically rooted, as if it “had always been there”, but that would also comfortably accommodate contemporary art and furnishings. They expressed their love of English country cottages as a starting point for the design, but requested a version compatible with a Cape Cod seaside setting and with their large, park-like property. The layout of this gracious home is half of a “butterfly plan” (a familiar device in the design of English country houses). Two wings project out at 45-degree angles from a rectangular body parallel to the waterfront. This plan type maximizes views from a site that has harbor views wrapping partly around it. The wings capture direct sunlight at ideal times of the day for different spaces (eastern light for the kitchen, western light for the living room and adjacent cocktail-party terrace). The front of the house acts as a backdrop to an expansive garden with a long winding drive. The porch that runs the entire length of the facade provides a welcoming layer, that is partially of the outdoors and partially of the indoors. The back of the house and its wings address the expanse of the harbor and Nantucket Sound beyond, reaching out in a dynamic gesture scaled to this vast seascape. The shingled exterior, with its crisp

white trim, retains a sense of the Cape Cod vernacular while alluding to great shingle style houses of a century ago. The interior and landscape spaces and their sequence are designed with large scale entertaining in mind. One is welcomed by an elongated entry/stair hall; a bright space for art work, a grand reception hall, and a circular organizer. The hall is dramatically lit from above by a skylight and two classic Louis Poulsen “Artichoke” light fixtures. At the end of the hall, the house opens its arms to the view, with living and formal dining spaces to one side and kitchen and informal dining spaces on the other. These expansive rooms are contrasted with an inward focused library at the front of the house. On the exterior, pools and terraces framed in natural stonework offer tranquil oases for conversation and relaxation. In 2010 Polhemus Savery DaSilva was given a Bulfinch Award, named after the great early American architect Charles Bulfinch, for the house. The jury praised it as a house that “…successfully references Cape Cod vernacular, nineteenth-century shingle style and the fine designers of the English Arts and Crafts houses…The American and English precedents fit the character of its seaside location. The detailing and craftsmanship are excellent.”

While the site for this house appears broad from the waterfront, the buildable portion, after zoning and wetland setbacks were followed, was tight for the owners needs. The space available was a triangular plateau downhill from the street and another property, and uphill from the waterfront. Like virtually all remaining undeveloped waterfront lots on Cape Cod, it was a challenge. The clients liked rambling shingle style houses and, to the extent possible on the tight site, Polhemus Savery DaSilva provided one. The central gambrel-roofed portion that faces the apex of the site’s buildable triangle houses the entry, stair, garage, mudroom and laundry room. These functions don’t need a water view, although the entry does have a peak through the depth of the house out to the view. Two wings, set back from the central mass, angle away to fit into the triangle and to rotate the rooms within toward the down-river views. On the water side of the house, the central gambrel disappears and becomes a full two-story linear bar connecting the rotated end pavilions and maximizing windows that face the view. First and second floor porches with playful details are cut into the bar to gain outdoor covered spaces and to add character and variety. The house is for summer living for a family of four plus an older couple who occupy an “in-law” apartment in a wing of its own. It has a private entrance but also direct connections into the house and onto the waterfront porch. Below the apartment

is a playroom with walk-out access to a swimming pool and terrace area that are nestled into the low-point of the site to protect them from the wind. The wing on the opposite end of the house contains the living room on the first floor and the master bedroom on the second floor. Both wings appear from the water as octagonal pavilions with their own centralized roof shapes and individual character. A whimsical mermaid weathervane, loosely based on an historical example from a sea-faring town in Maine, stands atop a cupola that is open to the in-law suite below. She is designed to point her finger in whatever direction the blowing wind dictates. She has, however, defiantly decided to point only toward the Bay of Biscay off the coast of France, from whence her lover, Samuel de Champlain, came in 1606. He stayed with her on Cape Cod for a while and she fell deeply in love with him, but alas, the lure of the sea once again called out to him and he left her. Despite knowing deep-down what all mermaids know – that sailors can’t be trusted – she misses him still and spends her days longingly gazing out over the pond for him. Sometimes, late at night, she comes down off her perch and cavorts with the oysters in the depths of the pond. They enjoy her so much and they often follow her when she returns to the cupola before day-break. No one has ever seen this but the owners are sure it happens because every-once-in-a-while they find an abandoned oyster shell next to her.

The bend in the Oyster River is the ideal setting for a shingle style home. Here is a landscape under a big open sky that fosters dreams of relaxation and fun – dreams that once led to a historical architecture called the shingle style. This late 19th Century invention was the first architectural style to originate in the New World. While it was quickly influential nationwide, its heart was in coastal New England where it was developed for people seeking a casual lifestyle at the beloved seashore. Still today, the character of the shingle style is the most reflective of the balance of rugged and gentle of the New England coast and its beaches, dunes and marshes – highlighted by the crisp summer sun. Polhemus Savery DaSilva was fortunate to be able to call on the shingle style, updated for contemporary living, for the home they designed and built at the bend in Oyster River. The best historical shingle style houses appear as if wrapped with a shingle membrane that was incised, like wallpaper, for openings. They were mostly of weathered wood, but also included classical elements. Polhemus Savery DaSilva employed these ideas, materials and forms. The roof appears light and curvaceous – like a balloon about to float away or a sail billowing up. The curved roof minimizes the confrontation a vertical house makes with a horizontal landscape. It appears to be yielding to the constant breeze off the water, just like rolling waves yield to the crest of a sloping beach. A row of simple columns keeps the forms tethered down. These classic shingle style ideas were combined with the Cape Cod vernacular – grey shingles, white columns and white grid window sashes. The white here, however, is a creamy version to soften the contrast and allow the grid of the windows to be strong but not overwhelming. The home has a panoramic view over the Oyster River, a tidal river that, at the bend, runs parallel to Nantucket Sound. Boats travel up and down the river, and shell

fishermen ply its waters. The dynamic movement of, and on, the river is balanced by the calm of the barrier beach (undeveloped except for a picturesque lighthouse) that separates it from the Sound. The back of the site is on a salt pond. Every room in the house captures a beautiful view of nature, despite the fully developed aspects of a peninsular location just a short distance from Chatham village. The porte-cochere separates the main house from the garage and guest suite above. Under the porte-cochere is a side entrance that leads to the mudroom and a private guest suite entrance that leads to a small stair. Above the porte-cochere is an office and a balcony that connects the main house to the guest suite. The typical front-to-back plan relationship (front facing street, back facing a private yard) would not be effective on this site, where the best views are perpendicular to the street. Requirements of setting back wetland also limited the width of the house that could run parallel with the waterfront. The plan configuration resolves these issues and allows all major rooms to participate in the best, south facing views. The footprint of the house could not, by regulatory mandate, exceed that of a previous house on the property. This constraint forced the architects to be judicious in allocating square footage, and led to a compact, yet still gracious plan. The entry porch is just deep enough to give the feeling of a traditional front porch. The porte-cochere is just big enough for a car to pass through. The environmentally sensitive site required careful shepherding through a complex permitting process. Despite the constraints, the result is a grand estate where the casual elegance of the historic shingle style sets the stage for relaxed, contented, sun-drenched living.

This year-round retreat was designed to house a family of four, extended family, frequent guests, and extensive collections that include works of fine art, decorative art, and furniture by historic and contemporary Cape Cod artists. It was decorated entirely by the owner with objects assembled over a lifetime. The house sits on a knoll surrounded by some of Cape Cod’s most beautiful land and waterscapes. Two lighthouses, two harbors, Nantucket Sound, and the open ocean are all visible from the house. A historic circa-1900 Cape had been moved to the property in the 1940s and partially surrounded by additions. Polhemus Savery DaSilva’s design strategy was to remove all but the original historic house and to use it as a wing on the new house. It now has a fully restored dining room and study and new circulation space connected with the rest of the house. It is an antique that is both a container of and a piece of the owner’s prized collection. The owner sought a house based on American Georgian architecture, but one accommodating a contemporary family lifestyle and the spectacular setting. A hip-roofed central portion with four large chimneys (the “New Georgian”) is flanked by two wings that enclose an entry court. One wing is partially made up of the historic house (the “Old Cape”), which was reoriented so that it fronts the approach from the road. A second, new

front door is located at the center of the Georgian facade. The courtyard is entered under a bridge that connects a new garage, and television room above, to the Old Cape. On the harbor side the house confronts the broad land and seascape as a bold and complex object with its face to the water. The building’s expanse is articulated by porches and bays added to the underlying Georgian box form. The central bay reaches toward the harbor to capture the panorama and to bring light in from multiple directions. The detailing of this bay was inspired by the sterns of the sailing ships that historically “staged” in the adjacent “Stage Harbor”. The great ships sometimes sailed around the world and brought back worldly influences, and this is reflected in the Asian inspired railing that surrounds the balcony of the “stern” . The house is clad in Alaskan yellow cedar shingles (similar to the regionally typical white cedar but available in longer lengths) and red cedar boards, with red cedar shingles for the roof. The entire mass has weathered to a silver grey color, which softens the relationship of the house to the land and the seascape. The only colors on the exterior are deep red on the window sash and doors, and reddish brown in the brick. The wall shingles are taller than typical. Their 20.3cm exposure to the weather, rather than the typical 12.7cm, reduces the overall scale of the house.
