National Monument (MONAS)
This 132-metre-high column is Jakarta’s principal landmark. Topped by a glittering flame, it symbolizes the nation’s independence . The flame is gilded with 50 kilograms of gold leaf. The basement of the monument houses an exhibit of 50 dramatic dioramas depicting the history of Indonesia.

Sunda Kelapa Harbour
The old port of Sunda Kelapa still sees the magnificent Makassar schooners (pinisi). In some respects, the dock scene here has barely changed for centuries, with porters unloading cargo from sailing ships by hand and trolley, although it is far less busy today.

The Old Town
Officially known as Kota Tua, this neighbourhood comprises the original downtown area of Jakarta. Sample local delicacies ranging from GadoGado (Indonesian salad with peanut sauce) to Kerak Telor (omelette with coconut). It is worth popping into the tiny Puppet Museum or hire a colourful bicycle to take photos.

Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park) is a miniature of the Indonesian archipelago There are pavilions representing the cultures of the country’s 33 provinces – from the traditional architectural style in miniature to a wonderful display of cultural items and exhibits.
