THE BLUE FLAME CITY
PROJECT INFORMATION This studio investigates the effects of a city inside of a building. We compact the town of Barrow, AK (~4500) into one single building.
SITE Barrow, AK is the northernmost human settlement in the United States. 60% of the local inhabitants are of native Alaskan heritage, and have been living continuously in this location for thousands of years. The other 40% is largely working in the petroleum industry. With no roads leading up to this town, the only way in and out of Barrow is by airplanes. This condition makes goods extremely expensive – and drives locals, even those with full-time jobs, to sometimes hunt and gather.

THE BLUE FLAME CITY
HISTORY/CONTEXT The Phalanstère, an idea initially written by Charles Fourier in the 19th Century, was a proposal for a fictional city with 500-2000 people living inside of one architecture. The idea of the Phalanstère became a philosophical position that considers an economic, social, and political entity that required all citizens to work at the best of their abilities in order to survive. In such remote and autonomous locations such as Barrow, AK, we will explore the effects of this thought experiment. Whittier, a southern Alaskan city that is a city inside of one building, one can easily identify the many positive attributes of living in one collective building in extreme conditions. For instance, heat-loss efficiency, energy conservation, artificial light, and political organization are just some of the potential advantages of a project like this.

PROJECT DISCRIPTION A blue flame flickering on the stove is normal for everyone back home and cooking. But it is, actually, not normal. What behind is a huge energy system invisible normally. Especially for Barrow, which itself is one of the birthplaces of the blue flame and part of the reason why everywhere else has the blue flame, which means, the natural gas supply. There will be one day, natural gas will run out. People who rely on the little blue flame, the most normal energy supply, will have to find another way to survive. In the most extreme environment like Barrow, Alaska, People in the city can not live with individual energy source any more, they have to move together to gain more heat and live with community based sources. Here we find a hidden secret for living, heating and food growing, which is going down. The whole city is UNDERGROUND. We live submerged in the net of the energy system. The program definition is in accordance with the energy. Except for basic architectural program, the energy generators and human in motion are also included. By grouping architectural programs into heat absorption and heat emission, architecture is becoming the composition of energy order. In other words, the form and function follow the energy.

Each greenhouse serves as a main program of each community. People within their own community grow foods, plants and feed animals in the greenhouse. Inside it, large amount of hot air is generated. The hot air slowly rises, and heats up the chimneys. 1650 apartment units are located along the perimeter of the chimneys, they get directly attached to the rising hot air.

People in Barrow transfer from industrial based society into agricultural based. They share foods and daily supplies at the markets, which are located around the greenhouses, and serve as the main circulation between different communities. THE NO-NEGOTIATION THEATER
PROJECT INFORMATION In the current atmosphere of political turmoil, this studio explores the design of theatres in contested areas of New York City. Taking as precedent the local tradition of drama in its varying formats we will propose Replicas or Critical Typological Corrections to historical theatres of the architectural avant-gardes from the XXth and XXIth centuries that consider current architectural, cultural and political affairs.
SITE East village, NY, is the neighborhood has become a center of the counterculture in New York, and is known as the birthplace and historical home of many artistic movements, including punk rock and the Nuyorican literary movement. It has also been the site of protests and riots. In recent decades it has been argued that gentrification has changed the character of the neighborhood

THE NO-NEGOTIATION THEATER
HISTORY/CONTEXT Taking Bertolt Brecht’s Epic Theatre as primary reference, Epic Architecture aims to encourage architects to address current polemical issues from the discipline, the city and beyond. The idea is to create architectural artefacts that more than resolving problems render them visible, more than showing good intentions rise questions and instead of being pragmatic are designed to create an estrangement effect that would transform its users in critical observers of architecture and reality.
PROJECT DISCRIPTION The east village has the higest density of Airbnb hosts within New York city. The Aribnb process changed a lot since it came in.The oringinal start point is sharing. But it became a kind of commercial operation. The Ikea style decoration became popular all over the world because of the convinient of assamble and low price. Thus, bad-influenced things happened and disturbed the local life pace.

PROJECT DISCRIPTION This theatre was to address the flexibility of performance and daily use. Traditionally, drama exceeds mundane world. However, behind the daily image, there is an enormous system hidden, which is the rules dominate life implicitly. This part of daily is the motivation of drama. When drama intervenes in architecture, it discards the form of buildings, and pushes away the daily function. The space conveys something intangible and expresses the different characteristic. In other words, drama revives architecture. How can the building act? When the sun rise and the shadows flickered in the space, the building provides a stage for stories, and also becomes a performer. This theatre is not only a drama inside, but also a scrip to combine the surroundings together. The linear plan form makes every part of the building juxtaposed with each other to respond the surroundings differently. At the same time, because of this building, the whole environment around will become a mosaic of daily activities. Every piece has its own life course, but contrast and converge through this theatre.

CONTEXT Through investigations on site, we concluded three main dark corners which we call it "The Side Face" of this area. How to define the side face of a building depends on which side is the front face. Through the topology study, we found that the space in side face area is enclosed and introverted, mostly remained by surrounded buildings. This situation aroused our interest to make further study about the side face. Moreover, the different layers of the side face, including social, policy, mentally and physically. First, the activities held by the temple are not integrated into local residents' daily life; second, refrigeration industry, which is the pillar industry in that region, is located in the edge of the religious culture; thirdly, at the level of architectural space, the space outside temple wall is inactive but with potential, leaving it self-governed by the residents.

PROJECT DISCRIPTION This project is aimed to revive the region atmosphere and preserve refrigeration industry at the same time, although sometimes they cannot coexist. Then improve the local living condition which is the common problem in old district. The structure of this urban design project is a cross. On the one hand, based on the wall we organized a new tourist route to strengthen the connection of two temples and improve the religion atmosphere. On the other hand, we transform the building form of refrigeration industry on Haizhu Bei Road from disarray to intergrate. Also to keep pace with the historical environment, we adopt the traditional Guangzhou commercial building type.

HISTORY/CONTEXT During 1950s, many "Dayuan" rise everywhere in Chinese cities which classify people who work together to live together. It is the first transformation of social network. After 1980s, such collectivism declined which loosen people's connection. Additionally, in 1990s, there is a new social network built online. However people still need face-to-face social activities and also a place to redefine social activities. This little house is built for professors in 1950s. The architects are the first generation of international students who studied in German and came back going for their homeland’s construction. They are also the first generation who encountered the Modernism architecture in China. This house was influenced by Adolf Loos apparently. The main characteristic of this house is the stair in the middle which organized various space with different height.

PROJECT DISCRIPTION

HOME needs to be redefined, to return to its impor tant role in the society. It should not only be a container or the commodity in housing industrialization. Home can be the best connector of face to face social activities. Home can be the intersection of the different division of society and the base of culture and life. Furthermore, a home as a connector can rebuild the social network in a community and the whole society. After researches in the old district of Guangzhou, the typology that combines commercial and residential is served mostly as a community center. People gather and exchange information there. In Gossip center, I add the commercial function to the private house. So the house is not introver ted anymore. It creates a place for physical social activities where gossip is also a positive element.
