The names are meant to highlight that a name is more lasting than a photograph. A photograph represents a person at a specific period in time, but a name references all phases of someone’s life.

The simple nature of carving into the land creates a journey in which the visitor can experience overwhelming density.

The thin profile of the wall is intentional, so that the perception of the monument is as part of the land, and that it is understood to be revealing something, rather than closing off one portion of the land from another.

Designer: Maya Lin Location: Washington DC Project Year: 1982

Completed in the early 1980s, the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial was commissioned as part of a competition with over 1400 submissions.

The winning design proved to be controversial and significant in the history of built American monuments.

The winner of the competition was Maya LIn, who was a twenty-one year old student at Yale University. She completed the project design as part of a funereal architecture course, and submitted it to the national competition as part of the assignment. Ironically, she received a “B” for the project.

The initial design of the project came as a sort of “intuition” to Lin after visiting the site. Through

the research in her class she had determined she did not want to design a monument that carried a message about the lives lost, rather than a more general message about a leader’s victory. She wanted to capture the honesty about the reality of war and loss, and create a rememberance for those who served and those who died.

Another aspect of the design included the description of a journey “A journey that would make you experience death and where you’d have to be an observer, where you could never really fully be with tthe dead. It wasn’t something that was going to say, ‘It’s alright, it’s all over’, because it’s not.”

Upon visiting the site, Lin had an impulse to cut into the earth. She describes this as “I imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in the earth with a polished, mirrored surface.” She also knew that the need for the names would become the memorial.

Upon receiving the commission, Lin moved to

Washington DC, to head the design and construction efforts. There were many critics of the design before the construction, and Lin had to overcome many hurdles to achieve the final design intent. Once construction had been completed, and the design was realized, the critics seemed to dissappear and people were taken by the experience and emotional procession the monument had on the average visitor.

The reflective surface of the stone brings focus to the rough surface of the names. The names are meant to be smaller in scale to create focus and intrigue from the user. Lin wanted to highlight that a name is more lasting than a picture. A picture represents a person at a specific period in time, but a name references all phases of someone’s

The monument is one of the most visited monuments in the nation, and has a sombering effect on it’s users. The simple nature of carving into the land creates a journey in which the visitor can experience overwhelming density. They begin to reflect on the two worlds they are experiencing and start to compare life and death. The names of the lives lost are extremely significant to the design. If the names were not listed, there would not be the deeper contemplation of someones background. There is also a large effect that the amount of names has on someone visiting the monument. They begin to percieve the turmoil the country faced during a specific period of time, and find gratefulness in those names who fought.

to maximize the sense of living in the landscape, as well as resemble early mountain shelters that are located in this region. The owners are not New N Zealand residents, so the structure is intended to be used by various people throughout the year.

The largest space of the small retreat is the open Kitchen and Living Room. Surrounding these public spaces is a main sleeping space, a bunkroom, bathrooms, and service. The

covered roof top, and follow a stair down to the entry level. The stair splits the massing, and the user experiences a procession through a schist rock portal.

Due to the site’s remote location, on-site wastewater management is used, as well as a bottled gas energy source. Water is sourced from a nearby mountain stream, tank stored and UV 2 filtered. Electrical power is provided to the site.

The exterior materials are meant to express a cubic form inside of the mountain. The interior is meant to feel “cave-like”. The southwest oriented mountain slope was chosen for its views, but causes problems with solar access in the winter. The heavyweight construction provides significant thermal mass, and there is heating set within the insulated floor slab, to provide additional comfort in the winter.

PROJECT INFO: Location: Boulder, Colorado Glenn Murcutt is the architect for the Fletcher Page House located in Kangaroo Valley, Australia.

The project is a narrow linear house that is exposed to views, responds to daylighting strategies, and is cooled by cross ventilation.

The project is oriented east west, and the more solid face is equator facing. This face utilizes solid materials to capture thermal heating, and displays significant openings which provided daylighting, without causing large heat gain within the space. Clerestory windows at the top of the equator facing facade let light in, and an angled window at the kitchen allows for light to come in appropriately without creating glare and uncomfortable lighting.

The design of Square’s new offices in San Francisco is inspired and based around the design of a city. The company required that there be a member of the design team who wasn’t a designer, that would check assumptions of the designers affecting human interactions. This person’s role was defined as the head of “office experience”. Through design, the layout of the human interactions was defined in terms similar to the layout of a city: The main hallway is described as an “avenue”, a coffee bar in the middle acts as a “town square”, location of office spaces are labeled as intersections such as “6th and Ashbury”.

1 DAYLIGHT PRECEDENT STUDY

The design motivates people to interact casually in unscheduled ways, just like public spaces within a city. In the San Francisco office there are small, informal meeting rooms intended for quick off-the-cuff style meetings.

When addressing the company’s global presence, the defenition and design of these small informal meeting rooms transforms. In San Francisco they are referred to as “cabanas”, whereas in Tokyo they are referred to as “tatami rooms”. All of the design elements are meant to underscore Square’s key values of collaboration and transparency. 2

SCHOLAR MEDITATION SPACES Located above the scholar residences, the meditation spaces occupy the highest point in the project. Therefore, their location is closest to the mountains and provides unique opportunity for reflection and meditation.

SCHOLAR RESIDENCES Each scholar residence includes a private bedroom, bathroom, and small work space. Once side of the residences is the circulation corridor in which the user experiences a double height space and planes of light. The other side of the residences are the exercise areas and lap pool.

1 STRUCTURAL AXONOMETRIC DRAWING The floor structure is comprised of concrete decking on concrete joists.

FLOOR STRUCTURE

Load bearing walls were established in early phases of design, and were used to define distinct spaces such as scholar residences, ciruclation, and mechanical areas. These areas allowed for solid floor to ceiling walls, and eliminated the need for columns.

LOAD BEARING WALLS

Round concrete columns are located at the grid intersections, where the horizontal structure is not supported by load bearing walls.

COLUMNS

Concrete beams are placed on each grid line and supported by the concrete columns.

The beam depth is increased in areas where the span is greater than the typical grid dimension (i.e. Assembly Hall).
