A

s the cover depicts, even in the depths of a Pennsylvania winter, inspiration springs eternal at Shannondell.

Of course, there’s a reason we’re an optimistic bunch. Whether it’s enjoying a dip in our indoor heated pool while watching the snow fly through the windows ... walking to the Performing Arts Theater for a concert in our shirt sleeves ... or taking the elevator to the bakery for an early morning cup of coffee while those outside our gates slip and slide their way to a Starbucks ... it’s easy to appreciate life here regardless of what mother nature throws at us. So, bring it on.

We’ll be in a pair of shorts down in the Fitness Center for a Classic Yoga or Stretch & Strength class. Or, we could be joining friends for our weekly Billiards, Poker or Rummikub

game. Then, again, we might be heading to the Woodcarving or Arts & Crafts studio to put the finishing touches on our latest work of art. Not that we haven’t been known to get sidetracked into the library or the clubroom bar to catch the latest news.

And if you ever doubt that inspiration doesn’t shine through all at Shannondell, look no further than the stage of our Performing Arts Theater. From the Romance of Broadway and Concertmaster David Kim to the Music of Greece and Ira & George Gershwin, entertainment – our entertainment – remains in the spotlight this winter. Exactly as it should be.

AquaBata Let’s rev-up your water workout with aquatic interval training! This class utilizes short bursts of higher intensity exercise with bouts of rest. It’s the hot item in the fitness industry now, so give it a try.

AquaBlast Begin your day with an aqua blast! We’ll challenge your balance and strength in the water with a mix of aerobic moves incorporating body position changes both with and without equipment.

AquaFit A 100% in-the-water cardio-fitness class that will have your heart pumping and your body grooving to the music.

Gentle Waves With a wide-ranging focus – including range of motion, balance and strength – this gentle-on-the-joints, non-impact water session is a good choice for a variety of fitness abilities and will leave you feeling good.

Hydro-Pilates A non-impact strengthening & stretching class that uses precise movements requiring breathing and muscle control. Pilates in the water helps to develop trunk stabilization, enhances muscle strength, corrects posture, and relieves stress.

Boot Camp This is a more intense session using weights and higher reps where we move onto the next muscle group/exercise with very brief (if any) rest between cycles.

Cardio Kickbox (beginners welcome) A total-body workout where you’ll learn to punch and kick your way to a healthier heart, a stronger core, and enhanced confidence! Be ready to move.

Cardio Move In this cardio class, we’ll get your feet moving and heart pumping. Get ready to march, step-touch, kick and more.

Core & More

It’s the perfect mix for improved fitness fast! We’ll alternate between free-standing aerobics and strength exercises with weights. Please note: this is a chair-free class with all exercises performed standing without support.

Be ready for floor/mat work that focuses on stretching, strengthening and lengthening exercises designed to improve posture, build core and abdominal strength.

Enjoy a healthy mix of stretching, strengthening exercises, even some aerobics all while remaining seated. We end the class with mild but effective standing leg exercises.

Let our staff help you plan indoor or outdoor routes and distances so you can keep in step.

Classic Yoga Traditional Hatha yoga suitable for all. Floor/mat work is emphasized in this class. A great choice for core strength, flexibility, and relaxation.

Guided Relaxation (for all fitness levels) Seated relaxation and breathing instruction will guide you in letting go of any stress. Suitable for all fitness levels, this session will leave you refreshed and relaxed.

Lower Body Toning Strengthen the muscles from the waist down with a combination of standing and seated exercises.

Mat Pilates Strengthen and lengthen your core muscles with traditional Pilates moves on floor mats. You’ll also learn to stabilize core muscles with proper Pilates breathing.

Mind & Balance In this class, you’ll learn exercises that challenge your balance and activities that stimulate your brain for a complete mind and body workout.

Seated Tai Chi In this class, we’ll enjoy the same benefits (de-stressing, improved balance) of Tai Chi, all while remaining seated in chairs and wheelchairs.

Seated Yoga Practice Hatha yoga while also enjoying the support of a chair. Learn postures and breathing techniques that build core strength, flexibility, and improve balance. You’ll leave relaxed and wanting more.

Strength in 30!

Here’s a quick way to stay fit. We’ll tone upper and lower body muscles that influence skeletal strength and support using a variety of weight exercises – all in 30 minutes.

Stretch & Strength This class includes a bit of it all – a few seated stretches and strengthening exercises followed by a series of strengthening reps while standing.

You could call it a little “Get up and Go.”

Tai Chi A great class to improve balance, Tai Chi uses slow and flowing body position shifts, deep breathing techniques and harmonious movements to teach the body how to move and think in a new and different way.

Yoga Balance We’ll warm-up with a seated stretch followed by 10 minutes of standing balance exercises combined with guided relaxation techniques – all yoga based.

TALKING FIT! Monthly talks focus on a variety of fitness topics, including what living a healthy and active lifestyle means and how you can make the right choices for your long-term well-being. Look for dates, times, and locations on your Activities calendar. All are welcome!

Yoga Essentials It’s amazing what gentle movements and conscious, controlled breathing can do for your well-being. This is a wonderful class for those recovering from illness, injury, grief or simply working to better manage the stresses of life. Join us and discover your healthy “center.”

GREAT COURSES Understanding the Inventions that Changed the World (Part 3 of a 3-part series) Wednesdays: Jan. 10 – Feb. 14, 2 p.m.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) We wrap up this most interesting 3-part series by examining what may be the single most important technology artifact of the 20th century – the Model T. From Henry Ford, our attention next turns skyward to the Wright brothers and Kitty Hawk. By the time we focus on radio and TV, PCs, the Internet and social media, the rate of change seems to accelerate with each major development. So, it’s only fitting that we conclude by considering the nature of progress and what it means for the years ahead. Professor Bernard Carlson (UVA) co-edits Inside Technology for MIT Press and serves on the Board of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Turning Points in American History (Part 4 of a 4-part series) Wednesdays: February 21 – March 28, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) Fridays: February 23 – March 30, 10 a.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) This final session begins with the turning point in WWII – the Battle of Midway. Following the war, we examine suburbanization and the Cold War. The 60’s bring radical changes in civil rights and environmentalism. As we approach the series conclusion, developments seem to accelerate with advances in technology due to the birth of the PC. By the time the age of terrorism begins with 9/11, we have a better appreciation of the cause and effect that these pivotal events have on U.S. history. Professor Edward O’Donnell served as the lead historian for the US Dept. of Education’s Teaching American History grant. He also provides insight for the History Channel, PBS and others.

A History of Eastern Europe (Part 1 of a 4-part series) Wednesdays: April 4 – May 9, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) Fridays: April 6 – May 11, 10 a.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) Referred to as the “Other Europe,” this region is rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. To truly understand Eastern Europe today, we must examine its past in the broader context of world history. This first session starts by examining the migrations that created the diversity of languages and cultures ... the impact of a divided Poland ... and the political ideologies that paved the way for the world wars of the 20th century. Professor and author Dr. Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius (UT) also served as a research fellow at the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace.

A New Secret Room Inside the Great Pyramid?

Jewels of the Pharaohs

Breaking News – Scientists discover mysterious “void” in Great Pyramid of Giza! This would mark the first discovery of a major space inside the ancient structure since the 1800s.

We’ll examine the pyramids of Giza in detail, including new data surfacing since this exciting find was announced. In the process, we’ll answer the question, “Is it even possible for the Great Pyramid to hold such secrets for 4,500 years?”

While most people are familiar with the solid gold funerary mask of King Tutankhamun (King Tut), many are unaware of the stunning array of jewelry that spans virtually all of ancient Egyptian history.

Ancient Egyptians – especially royals – liked their “bling,” meaning these rulers appreciated the beauty of jewelry just as much as we do today. This richly illustrated discussion brings to life the world of ancient Egyptian jewelry, including how we should interpret these impressive pieces. This is one lecture that is literally dripping in gold!

Women in Ancient Egypt March 2, 2 p.m. (Bradford Movie Theater) Like many ancient populations, ancient Egypt was a male dominated culture. However, women were not silent witnesses. In fact, both royal and non-royal women held important positions in ancient Egyptian society, including several who ruled as pharaohs. This lecture illuminates the role of these women, including rulers such as Hatshepsut – the second historically confirmed female pharaoh. Hatshepsut extended Egyptian trade and oversaw ambitious building projects, most notably the Temple of Deir el-Bahri (one of the architectural wonders of ancient Egypt) where she would later be buried.

Adventures in the Deserts of Jordan & Tor Faraj April 6, 2 p.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) This lecture takes us deep into the Jordan desert to a rock shelter site known locally as Tor Faraj.

Dr. Steve spent a full summer here as part of a team excavating this site that dates back to the time of the Neanderthals. But, Neanderthals in Jordan – is that even possible? We’ll uncover the answer as we examine the findings from this dig, including numerous unpublished photographs taken by Dr. Steve. Join us for a true archaeological adventure!

This session will focus on the recorded changes, including those in the news and other, less well-known and reported effects influencing our weather and biosphere.

The Evolution of Photography By Chris Karfakis Tuesday, January 23, 2 p.m. (Location to be determined) Join us for an interesting look through the viewfinder of photography past and present. We’ll cover the rich background of historical images, the evolution of image creation and manipulation, and study the stars of the craft. We’ll also discuss how big names in the industry like Kodak and Polaroid missed the digital wave and what technology holds for the next stage of photography. Chris is a native of Philadelphia and longtime camera bug, collector and photography expert.

While “Fake News” seems to be a very contemporary issue, it’s anything but. We’ll dig into the background stories that help to explain some of the issues that command our attention on virtually every news day. In this popular class, each session will focus on a different topic, including: Monuments, American Demagogues, Korea, Venezuela, Immigration, and Fake News. Michael Simeone has taught at Temple University and Widener University. ($30 for residents)

Thursday, January 25, 2 p.m. (Location to be determined) Bone detectives, also known in scientific circles as Forensic Anthropologists, can play pivotal roles in criminal cases. But, how exactly do these scientists use bones to solve crimes and what takes place when a skeleton is discovered?

Experts from the Mutter Museum will answer these and other questions when they come rattle a few bones in January.

Fans of the Bones TV series can, once again, get their skeletal fix since the popular Fox show concluded.

As historian and Professor Thomas Flagel has said, “Foreign policy achievements should stand as monuments to skillful negotiation where human reason engineered stability out of turmoil.” So, which presidents have owned that skill and reason?

Starting with Washington’s Atlantic Wall in 1793, we’ll study US foreign policy through the administration of George H.W. Bush ending the Cold War in 1990.

Whales Reason and Have Feelings Like People

By Dan Knaub Thursday, April 26, 2 p.m. (Location to be determined) Whales and humans have plenty in common. The larger of the mammals come in a variety of sizes and have different behaviors. Whales also create different behaviors and languages within their own cultures, same as humans. One of those altruistic behaviors is the protection of other species at their own expense. We’ll explore fascinating episodes of humpback whales protecting other species from predators and explore the diverse personalities of several individual whales.

Jeffrey Uhlig Artistic Director & Pianist, Broadway & Concert Series Jeffrey Uhlig performs regularly with many outstanding singers and instrumentalists including members of The Philadelphia Orchestra, The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Uhlig studied piano with William Masselos and Gaby Casadesus and studied art song literature with Dalton Baldwin. He received a Master of Music Degree from West Chester University.

It’s a special evening of heartfelt Broadway classics and original songs written just for Marian.

Marian Murphy Powell An accomplished singer and theatrical artist in classical music, Marian has also been featured with orchestras around the world, including the Shanghai Symphony. Favorite roles include: Cosette in Les MisĂŠrables, Christine in Phantom and Marian in The Music Man, among others.

Ms. Powell is also a successful recording artist.

Her most recent recording Amazed by You includes original songs written by pianist and composer Matthew Qualye. Marian currently resides and teaches vocal training in Collegeville.

Philadelphia’s Favorite Leading Man Jeffrey Coon (vocalist) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) February 16, 7:30 p.m.

A decades-long star of the Philadelphia Theater scene returns to the Shannondell stage.

Jeffrey Coon A 10-time Barrymore nominee for Theatre Excellence, Mr. Coon has performed in close to 100 professional productions with the Walnut Street Theatre, Arden Theatre Company, Philadelphia Theatre Co., People’s Light & Theatre Co., Prince Music Theatre, Fulton Theatre Co. and many others. Mr. Coon has also toured nationally, appearing at prestigious regional houses such as Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre and Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars. Upcoming shows include Lend Me A Tenor at Act 2 Playhouse in Ambler and Parade at Arden Theatre Company.

A star of Off-Broadway charms us with songs both romantic and dramatic.

Jim Schubin Winner of the International Lotte Lenya Singing Competition, Jim Schubin recently completed an acclaimed national tour of The Sound of Music. Mr. Schubin also starred in the role of Matt (the boy) in the Off-Broadway hit The Fantasticks and has performed in numerous regional theaters, including Cape Playhouse, Barrington Stage and the West Virginia Public Theater. A graduate of Emerson College, he also created the role of Phillip Gardner in HBO’s series Boardwalk Empire and is a member of the Platinum Album group Teatro.

Jessica Lennick recently performed with the Opera Camerata of Washington (D.C.), Chesapeake Chamber Opera, and Center City Opera Theater. Additionally, Ms. Lennick has premiered many pieces, including Mark the Music (Smith) and A Weeping Woman (Solitro). She made her radio debut with WRTI in their Philadelphia Music Makers series, and made her television debut on Articulate with Jim Cotteron on WHYY. As an orchestral soloist, Ms. Lennick recently appeared with the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra for their Mozart Requiem.

Jody Kidwell Ms. Kidwell was a winner in the third Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, and was later chosen

by Mr. Pavarotti to appear in Luisa Miller, filmed by PBS. Ms. Kidwell has also performed themajor concert works of Verdi, Beethoven, Rossini, Elgar, DeFalla,Mahler and Mozart with the North Carolina Symphony,The Las Vegas Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and The National Symphony of San Jose, Costa Rica and Bogota, Columbia.

It’s an evening of soothing musical discoveries for Oboe, Oboe d’Amore, English Horn and Bass Oboe.

John Symer

Oboist Corinna Wiedmer-Symer studied with Richard Woodhams, Principal Oboe with The Philadelphia Orchestra. With degrees and awards from both The New School of Music and Temple University, Ms. Wiedmer-Symer is a long-time substitute musician with The Philadelphia Orchestra.

She has also served on the faculties of Lehigh University and The College of New Jersey.

John Symer began his career with Paul Covey building oboes after graduating from Eastman School of Music where he studied under Robert Sprenkle. Mr. Symer has appeared many times with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, and recently played a bass oboe of his own making with the New York Philharmonic. John holds an AB from Dartmouth and has studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

Brahms to Bernstein: An Evening of Timeless Classics Cristina Nassif (soprano), Markus Beam (baritone) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) March 9, 7:30 p.m.

Timeless is, indeed, the word as classic arias, art songs and Broadway scores fill the Performing Arts Theater.

Cristina Nassif Singer and actress Cristina Nassif has been seen in works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Strauss’s Four Last Songs, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. She has performed leading roles in the U.S. and abroad, including performances at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, London’s Royal Albert Hall and China’s Shanghai and Shenzhen Concert Halls.

Ms. Nassif received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Maryland and an Artist Diploma from The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Markus Beam With a growing list of roles in both the U.S and Europe, American baritone Markus Beam is establishing a name for himself in the opera world.

Appearances by Mr. Beam include Die Zauberflöte and Rossini’s Figaro, and Bach’s B Minor Mass at Avery Fisher Hall. Mr. Beam is the recipient of the Dixie Drechsler scholarship from the American Berlin Opera Foundation and is also a Regional Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

The Beguiling Bassoon Emeline Chong (bassoon) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) April 6, 7:30 p.m.

After enjoying these delightful works from Ms. Chong, you’ll wonder why the Bassoon is rarely heard as a solo instrument.

Emeline Chong While studying under Daniel Matsukawa, Principal Bassoonist in The Philadelphia Orchestra, Emeline Chong won first place in Young Artist Competitions with the Southeastern Symphony Orchestra and Ambler Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Ms. Chong performs regularly with other professional orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony, Opera Philadelphia, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. A graduate of Curtis Institute of Music, Ms. Chong is currently Second Bassoonist in the Symphony in C orchestra.

Masterpieces from The Literature David Kim (violin) & Jeffrey Uhlig (piano) March 22, 2:30 p.m.

In the most anticipated concert of the year at Shannondell, the Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra returns playing masterpieces from the literature for Violin and Piano.

David Kim Violinist David Kim received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. In 1986, he was the only American violinist to win a prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In 1999, Mr. Kim was named Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In 2008, Mr. Kim was awarded the C. Hartman Kuhn Award, given annually to “the member who has shown ability and enterprise of such character as to enhance the standards and the reputation of The Philadelphia Orchestra.”

Mr. Kim is also a soloist with orchestras around the world.

The Charles Salinger Trio January 22, 7:30 p.m.

The Music of Greece January 9, 7:30 p.m.

The brother-sister Greek duo Stavros & Maria bring their “full band� sound to Shannondell in 2018. Using midi arrangements as the backdrop for his live performance on keyboards, Bouzouki, guitar, and bass, Stavros joins with Maria adding outstanding vocals to Greek dance music. Opa!

Joining Charles on clarinet is Dave Posmontier (piano) and Dave Brodie (bass) for an evening of Jazz hits from the 20s, 30s and 40s, including the music of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and, as always, a sing-a-long or two. Bring your dancing shoes!

Al Harrison Dixieland Jazz Band January 30, 7:30 p.m.

It’s a return engagement by the always popular and swinging Dixieland Band of Bill Schilling (piano), Bill Stumm (bass), Chic Spirell (drums), Fred Scott (trombone), Joe Midiri (clarinet) and, of course, Al Harrison (trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn).

It’s a show unlike any other, combining the art of marionettes designed and performed by Joseph Cashore in a series of scenes set to beautiful music by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi and Copeland. Mesmerizing!

As a strong baritone and gifted guitarist, Charlie Zahm has become one of the most popular performers of Scottish and Irish music worldwide.

Joining Charlie on stage is fiddler Tad Marks, fellow guitarist Steve Hobson and the fabulous Drummond Sisters performing Celtic dances.

Hello, Dolly!

It’s one of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals, opening in 1964 and revived four times since (most recently in 2017 starring Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce). It’s the story of Dolly Levi – a mover, a shaker, a meddler and matchmaker – the boldest, brassiest diva of all time. Relive the magical moments between Dolly and the miserly Horace Vandergelder, and sing along to the hits we all know and love. You’re sure to be impressed when you hear these local middle school (7th & 8th grade) students. This impressive string ensemble has been awarded the “Judges Choice” award for the highest scoring orchestra at the Music in the Parks competition.

The Wind Symphony of New Jersey March 26, 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Dr. Robert Streckfuss, Professor of Music Emeritus (Delaware), these 42 musicians perform works including Roman Carnival Overture by Berlioz, Victory at Sea by Rodgers and symphonic Gershwin melodies Rhapsody in Blue, Cuban Overture, and An American in Paris among others.

Duo Impromp2: 4-hand Piano Works April 10, 7:30 p.m.

Award-winning pianist and composer Jennifer Nicole Campbell joins Ukrainian pianist and chamber performer Dasha Bukhartseva in sharing their love of 4-hand piano works. After meeting at Peabody Conservatory during undergraduate studies, Jennifer and Dasha made their 4-hand debut in early 2017 to stellar reviews.

Between the two, they have appeared on numerous TV and radio networks, including PBS and NPR. Don’t miss these two star pianists performing together.

This high-flying 7-piece Vintage Jazz Band, featuring Ben Mauger on Trumpet and Cornet, returns with a selection of songs made famous by popular Jazz greats Armstrong, Waller, Beiderbecke, Whiteman and the one and only Jelly Roll Morton. You might even hear a little Ragtime.

Philadelphia Bronze Concert April 23, 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Hyosang Park, and drawing ringers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, this ensemble of advanced handbell musicians performs 7-octave works on Malmark bells and chimes like you’ve never heard. In the words of one reviewer, “Simply masterful.”

Ken Lelen Presents Torch Song Embers April 24, 7:30 p.m.

(Ashcroft Movie Theater) It’s a concert of wistful, memorable and bittersweet songs for folks who idolize these romantic treasures, begotten heartbreakers and the “one who got away.” Join Ken for this sentimental musical journey.

Crazy for You, with music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, is based on the 1930 musical Girl Crazy. The 1992 Broadway Premier took home Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. Elizabeth Butler directs Methacton’s production of this zany rich-boy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy set in a rundown theater in Deadrock, Nevada. Gershwin hits include I Got Rhythm, Naughty Baby and Someone to Watch Over Me among others. If you love Gershwin (and who doesn’t), you can’t miss this memorable show. ($11 for residents) 65

Masterpieces in March He started playing the violin at age three, began studies with the famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay five years later, and went on to receive his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. Of course, we’re talking about David Kim, Concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

In addition to appearing as soloist with the Orchestra, Mr. Kim has performed with orchestras around the world.

We’re always humbled and excited when he chooses to return to the Shannondell stage and this year is no exception. Don’t miss this highly-anticipated concert of masterpieces from the literature for violin and piano by fellow Philadelphia resident and renowned musician, instructor and professor David Kim.
