The typeface was born in

to John Baskerville, an Englishman. Living in a family with a passion for caligraphy had a great effect on Baskerville, and it inherited its looks from both traditional and more modern elements. Baskerville became more popular after its father’s death, particularly with its usage in various forms of print in Europe and America.

a LEVEL serif typeface was a great choice for John Baskerville’s creation. Its legibility in larger works of print, as opposed to on-screen writing, was key since computers were not around during its creator’s lifespan.

Ascenders of Baskerville’s typeface practically split the letters in half. Due to the greater x-height of the typeface, ascenders of these letters specifically appear to be very similiar in length & overall appearance.

Descenders on the other hand, appear to be almost identical in length to Baskerville’s ascenders. This characteristic contributes to the success of the use of the typeface in printed books.

Baskerville Bookman Old Style

as a transitional typeface, appears to have a greater width of letters than Baskerville. Letters also appear to have less contrast . Tails of Bookman Old Style are emphasized a lot, making its descenders much more distinct than its ascenders.

was clearly derived from Baskerville’s own typeface. However, it seems to be accepted by readers and designers alike much more than Baskerville, due to significant variations. Some of these include a reduced x-height & capheight, with wider lowercase letters than Baskerville.
