Dearly Betrothed,
e are gathered here to celebrate your engagement – congratulations! Crafting a wedding celebration that feels meaningful and joyful is no small feat – it’s a delicate balance of merging families, honoring traditions, staying on budget and reflecting your unique love story. While the journey can be overwhelming, the rewards are immeasurable when you see your vision come to life surrounded by those who matter most.
I’ve had the privilege of guiding countless couples on this path in my role helming Heart of NC Weddings for 15 years, during which I’ve experienced many life milestones myself, including an engagement and traditional wedding in my 20s, followed by motherhood in my early 30s and then … divorce. I’ve been a single mom, a bridesmaid, a bachelorette party planner and an online dater over the past near-decade, all the while working on this wedding guide, documenting changing wedding trends – from the luxury peak to the pandemic pause to the new “anything goes” frontier of today.
And now, like you, I’ve experienced life’s greatest joy: falling in love with the partner of my dreams. Our recent wedding, like so many others, reflected our unique circumstances. As it was a second marriage for both of us, we opted for simplicity, intimacy and speed – planning a meaningful elopement ceremony that honored not just our love, but also the new family we were creating with his and my children. My nuptials reinforced what I’ve always believed: There’s no one “right” way to celebrate (even if you publish a weddings magazine!). Your wedding should be authentic to you.
At Heart of NC Weddings, we’re here to guide and inspire you. Our publication isn’t just about providing pretty pictures and trendy ideas (though you’ll find plenty of both) – it’s designed to offer real, practical inspiration and advice crafted by an incredible community of wedding vendors located right here in North Carolina. Each is someone who we’ve met, worked with and trust, so you can plan with confidence. We’re proud to act as your personal word-of-mouth reference, whether you’re searching for a florist who can create jawdropping arrangements, a caterer who will impress even the pickiest of palates or a dress shop that fits your vision perfectly, you’ll find names we genuinely stand behind in these pages.
From the editorial side, we’ve put together stunning stylized shoots and culled a group of real North Carolina weddings that reflect the latest trends –modern, elegant, whimsical and everything in between. Our planning tips are grounded in the realities of local pricing and timelines (start with our Marriage Map on page 18!), ensuring they’re practical and actionable as you build your budget and schedule.
Our hope is that this magazine serves as a starting point in organizing your thoughts and ambitions for the big day. Use these pages to discover vendors who speak to your heart and style, then explore our website and digital channels for even more resources and insight. Every connection you make here is rooted in a shared commitment to quality, creativity and ensuring your wedding is truly unforgettable. From one newlywed to another soon-to-be, I send you heartfelt wishes for joy, peace and love as you embark on planning this incredible celebration.
I am touched to see this mindset so clearly in today’s couples. The world we live in now, shaped by digital connectivity, inflation and rapid societal shifts, has given rise to a new generation with fresh perspectives and priorities. I’ve come to appreciate the resiliency, creativity and individuality of today’s weddings, having observed the transformation closely over the past few years and experienced it on a personal level.
Warmly,
JENNA PARKS

Marriage Map
Newly engaged and not quite sure where to begin? We’re here to guide every step of your wedding planning journey and connect you with the trusted professionals who can bring your dream day to fruition! Let’s review the big-ticket tasks you’ll need to tackle on your way to the altar.
DOLLARS AND CENTS
Defining your budget is an essential task you should complete before inquiring with any vendors. Sit down with your fiance, and talk about what you’re comfortable spending and whether any family members will be pitching in. What priorities do you have for your wedding day? Figuring this out early will help create clear objectives throughout the rest of the process.
GATHER YOUR PEOPLE
Your guest count will impact everything from venue selection to catering (and it also affects budget – keep that in mind, too!), so get a realistic idea of how many people you plan to invite. As you do this, consider the loved ones you want by your side on the big day, and ask them to be members of your wedding party or to take on any special roles you’d like them to fill, such as officiating your vows.
PICK YOUR AESTHETIC
Now for the fun part! Hone in on your vibe –edgy, traditional, formal, romantic, eclectic, etc. – and then consider if you want a theme to reflect your love story or a shared interest. This defined vision will help guide your vendor selection.
VENUE SEARCH
Choosing the location of your ceremony and reception is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. Start your research here in our magazine and online, but don’t stop there! Attend open houses (we share several in our weekly emails!) to tour locations you’re interested in. Be mindful of what’s built into the venue fee (like catering, overnight accommodations and more), as this will determine the additional vendors you’ll need to book. Once you’ve secured the venue or venues where you’ll host your celebration and set a date, the details can start to fall into place.
BUILD YOUR TEAM
There’s significant legwork required to research and book quality wedding pros, but don’t stress – this is where we can help! Learn about local vendors in the pages of this issue and browse the guides on our website for even more recommendations. We advise booking your wedding planner first; they will be a valuable resource as you fill in the rest of your vendor team.
GET ONLINE
A wedding website is a useful tool to keep guests informed. We recommend you create one to share answers to FAQs, travel details, information on local attractions, room blocks, registry links and more.
PLAN YOUR CEREMONY
Beyond the logistics, spend time planning out how you’ll make your ceremony your own. Decide if you’d prefer to write your own vows, stick to a traditional or religious script, or incorporate unique elements to symbolize your union. Consider other cultural traditions you may want to include in the wedding.

Take Our Advice
“Keep in mind that this isn’t a strict month-bymonth timeline, because North Carolina couples are planning their weddings on all kinds of schedules these days. The idea of a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to wedding planning just doesn’t apply anymore.”

SEND SAVE-THE-DATES
We’re fans of thoughtful and beautiful paper products, since it’s the first element of the event your guests will experience – this is a good place to include a link to your wedding website, too. Add a personal touch by using photos from an engagement photo shoot – also a perfect opportunity for a trial run with your hair and makeup team and photographer.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!
There are a few more tasks to handle while the excitement builds: Attend any final attire fittings and spa or salon appointments; organize tips to be distributed to service vendors during the event; plan for any pickups and returns that need to be made; and complete your vows if you’re writing your own.
Budget
Breakdown
ou may have dreamt about the fun aspects of your wedding since you were a kid. We aren’t here to burst any bubbles, but there are realities you’ll need to face when it comes to the costs of making your big day happen. The first step in planning your wedding – even before you pick a venue – is to outline your overall budget.
The tricky part is that no two weddings are alike. If you splurge on your fantasy florals, that cost may take up a larger portion of your budget than the average couple’s, but you’ll just need to adjust other expenses to accommodate that choice. We encourage you to prioritize spending on what matters most to you – what we don’t advise is breaking the bank and regretting it later. Sit down with your partner to determine a realistic budget and stick to it.
Coastal Credit Union Vice President of Marketing Michelle Shelton suggests opening a dedicated bank account
for wedding expenses – Coastal’s Go Green checking account is a good option, she says – to track costs and stay on budget.
“Utilize our financial planning tools to help you and your partner estimate and prepare for wedding costs, combined finances and future goals,” Michelle says. She also advises discussing your credit scores, spending habits and whether you want to merge accounts or keep them separate. This will help prepare you for your financial future as a married couple.
VENUE + CATERING
Most couples spend the largest portion of their overall budget – often 30% to 40% or even more – on their ceremony and reception venue(s) and catering. The percentage will be on the higher end of that range if the venue fee includes bar services, accommodations or other additional costs beyond the rental of the space itself.
Hidden Costs
Even after budgeting for all the wedding vendors you need to hire, don’t forget these additional expenses!
• Tipping those who go above and beyond for you, while not required for most vendors, is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation. It’s appropriate to tip service vendors like catering staff, bartenders and drivers.
• Taxes and gratuity – gratuity may be included in your invoice, but this isn’t always the case, so ask if you’re not certain.
• Travel expenses
• Honeymoon costs
DECOR
Floral design, lighting and party rental costs will generally account for the next largest chunk of the budget, around 15%. Keep in mind that costs can vary significantly if you need a full tent build-out or if items like tables and chairs are included in your venue rental fee.
PHOTO + MOTION
Expect to spend 10% to 15% of your budget on your photographer and videographer.
JEWELRY + FASHION
Wedding attire – including your wedding bands and accessories – should account for about 10% of your total costs. However, if you choose a couture gown or opt for multiple outfits, this amount may increase.
ENTERTAINMENT
Couples typically spend about 8% of their budget on entertainment, which may include a photo booth, ceremony musicians and other options.
WEDDING PLANNING
Planners vary in cost depending on the level of service you require. See page 160.
PAPER, DESSERT, TRANSPORTATION + MORE
The remaining portion of your budget should cover stationery costs, your hair and makeup team, cake or dessert baker and transportation services (if required).
vibe check
ith so much inspiration available at your fingertips through social media, deciding on the perfect aesthetic for your event and choosing a theme that reflects your love story can be challenging. One thing’s for sure – getting on the same page about this with your partner is an important first step to take before you inquire with a floral designer, party rental supplier and other vendors.
• Start with the mood. Brainstorm (independently from your partner) a handful of adjectives that represent the overall vibe you want the day to take on. What do you want guests to remember when they look back on your wedding? Forget what you think your mother or friends will expect –this is about your desires and dreams for your big day. Here are a few modifiers to get your gears turning: extravagant, comfortable, romantic, playful, experimental and intimate.
• Choose a level of formality. If this seems tricky, think about the attire you envision yourself wearing on your wedding day. The gown or formalwear you pick should dictate the formality of the event as a whole. Keep in mind that formality doesn’t only apply to clothing – it can influence decor as well.
• Consider the season. If you’re truly stuck, let the season of your event inform decor, dining and attire choices. For example, apple cider doughnuts and seasonal veggies are fitting fare for an autumn wedding.
PIN THIS, NOT THAT
Pinterest is a seemingly endless trove of ideas and perfectly arranged wedding details. We suggest browsing the site to generate a gallery of visual references. These don’t need to be exclusively wedding photos – gather images that showcase textures and tones that appeal to you. Use them to inspire the overall vibe of your event.
Don’t be surprised, however, if what you see on Pinterest is not realistic for your wedding. This may be the case for a number of reasons. Your budget and the scope and season of your event may not align with the epic floral arrangements or personalized paper products you see.
In addition, bringing a photo to your florist or cake baker and asking them to replicate a specific design is not something we recommend. Not only will this leave you disappointed if their take differs from that exact likeness, but it’s likely infringing on the intellectual property of the creatives who conceptualized the design in the first place. If you’ve done the research to scope out vendors who fit your style and preferences, trust that their expertise and passion will deliver a result you’ll love.
Beauty & Fashion
Cost
Wedding gowns may range from $800 to as much as $20,000 for couture styles, but the average cost is about $3,500. Formalwear rentals start around $190. Purchasing formalwear or a custom suit is significantly more expensive.
Consider
Made-to-order gowns may take up to eight months to arrive after ordering, so start shopping nine months to a year in advance of your wedding date. Aim to rent formalwear no later than three months in advance.

Alexandra Grecco
The New York City-based designer founded her bridal line in 2014 after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology. “We’ve carried Alexandra Grecco since the beginning,” says Gilded Bridal owner Susan Langford
Susan says that Alexandra Grecco gowns typically fall into one of two aesthetics: effortlessly sophisticated, or intricately detailed, whimsical and playful. These made-to-order silhouettes break from traditional bridal styles, offering modern, highly customizable options, Susan adds.
The two dresses pictured on the right are part of Alexandra Grecco’s 2025 collection, which is inspired by the quiet stillness and draping of classical sculpture, and the poetic movement of lightweight silk. Both embody the resplendent elegance and beauty synonymous with the label.
Madeline Couture
Designer Madeline Gardner’s styles are nothing short of show-stopping. She’s known for “over-the-top, voluminous ballgowns that are still classic,” says Nell Todd, owner of the New Bern, North Carolina, shop Thornbury Brides. These dresses are as comfortable as they are glamorous thanks to impeccable interior corsetry, Nell adds, ensuring you feel your best from the first look to the final dance.
UC Models’ Colombe Martin stuns in a strapless ballgown with a rose motif, showcasing Madeline’s hallmark flair for unexpected texture and intricate embellishments in her singular couture creations.

Truvelle
“Truvelle is committed to ethical fashion and sustainability,” Susan says. “They are dedicated to minimizing waste in the production of their gowns and to being ethical in how they employ people to create them.”
Each Truvelle gown is handmade at the Vancouver, Canada, atelier. “When you get your dress, the name of the person who made it is handwritten on the tag,” Susan adds.
Model Sarah Hesselink wears a floral jacquard ballgown (one of six dresses in Truvelle’s 2025 collection) that offers convertibility and customizable elements, two qualities that continue to be popular in bridal fashion. The bow straps can be worn three different ways – off the shoulder, on the shoulder or not at all – and the bustier bodice with exposed boning (a style that’s extremely à la mode this season, Susan says) can be designed with either a zipper or lace-up closure.

Beccar
UC Models’ Laila Hudgins is radiant in a floral lace gown from Beccar’s spring 2025 collection.
“[Beccar produces] some of the highest-quality dresses I’ve ever seen,” Nell says. “They’re detail oriented, and they always have veils to match, which I love.”
Beccar’s romantic and feminine silhouettes also offer adjustments to suit personal preferences.
“There’s a lot of flexibility,” Nell says. “If you see a fabric you love in one of their skirts, it can be put on a bodice for you. They’re great at making custom changes, but what [impresses me most are] their fabrics. They use very unique fabrics and laces, and how these are applied in their designs is, to me, masterful.”

Stella York
“‘Stella’ means star in Italian, and I think the goal of Stella York is for [anyone who wears their gowns] to feel like a star on their wedding day,” says Heather DiMasi, owner of White Bridal Boutiques. “A lot of Stella styles are runway worthy, yet approachable from a style perspective. There’s still a timeless aspect to them. They’re inclusive in pricing and sizing as well, and I love that about Stella York.” The puff sleeves and structured bodice of the pearl organza ballgown modeled by Sarah exemplify many of the elements currently filling dress shops. “We’re going to see a lot more of [these features] in 2025, for sure,” Heather says.

THE PERFECT MATCH
It’s become more popular than ever for wedding parties to don a variety of colors, patterns and styles rather than identical garments. This strategy is sure to result in dynamic photos, and the freedom to choose silhouettes that they feel most comfortable in is a thoughtful gesture your friends will appreciate. Be intentional when mixing shades, textures and styles in order to ensure cohesiveness. Stick to one dominant color or a few complementary tones. Also consider asking a few members of the wedding party to wear a solid color to complement lively prints. And, if both sides of the wedding party are wearing gowns, dressing one side in patterns and the other in solids can subtly indicate which member of the couple they’re accompanying.
SHOPPING TIMELINE
You’ll want to order wedding party attire at least six months in advance of your wedding date, according to Rachel Harrell, owner of Bella Bridesmaids Raleigh. While some dresses may take only a few months to arrive after ordering, she says, it’s best to have at least a month for alterations, and you don’t want to risk late delivery!

Look and feel your best on your child’s big day
eddings are milestones for parents of the couple just as much as they are for the celebrants themselves. You’ll want to feel comfortable and confident as you fulfill a crucial role in guiding and supporting your child through this life transition. Read on for our best tips for selecting an ensemble to wear to your child’s nuptials!
LOOK AHEAD
Mothers of the couple should aim to order their dress six to eight months in advance of the wedding according to Mary-Kannon Jefferson Gosnell of Kannon’s Clothing, a specialty clothier that was founded by her great-grandfather in 1916. Kannon’s now operates womenswear and formalwear shops in Raleigh’s Village District.
This time frame leaves plenty of wiggle room for alterations, MaryKannon says. However, many shops carry attire that you can purchase off the rack if you have a tighter schedule. Kannon’s keeps a variety of sizes and style options in stock for this purpose. Order formalwear rentals no later than three months ahead of the big day, but start shopping even earlier if you’re seeking color and fabric options outside traditional blacks and blues.
“There are those who like to get all their shopping out of the way early,” says Keith Smith, operations manager of Bernard’s Formalwear in Durham, North Carolina. “We love those people.”
ALTAR EGO
to these old-school rules, but it can be helpful to be aware of them. We all know white and ivory are off-limits for mothers of the couple, and, until recent years, so too were black and red. Traditionally, the mother of the bride chooses attire first so the mother of the groom can pick a garment that won’t clash or look too similar.
TRUST THE PROS
Feeling overwhelmed by options? Relax! There are experienced folks who can guide your selection.
“To satisfy the needs of parents, we fall back on what we do best: offer [top-notch] products with exceptional knowledge and unrivaled customer service,” says Bruce Liles, owner and president of Liles Clothing Studio. The Raleigh outfitter (situated in North Hills) is equipped to clothe parents in anything from full dress cutaway for formal weddings to linen suits for casual affairs. Kannon’s customers enjoy one-on-one appointments through the store’s social occasion department, allowing for a highly personalized shopping experience.
Ask your child about the theme, formality and color palette of their event. You get the final say in what you wear, of course, but this is their celebration. Respect their wishes for how you’ll dress if they provide specific instructions.
CODES OF CONDUCT
Southern wedding etiquette dictates specific guidelines for parents. Not all modern couples expect their parents to adhere
À LA MODE ATTIRE
Silk taffeta and shades of green are trending this season for mothers of the couple, Mary-Kannon says, and traditional silhouettes, blue hues and off-the-shoulder styles remain popular.
BE YOU
Coordination with the wedding party and other parents is paramount, but don’t let this stop you from letting your individuality peek through. Use accessories to make your look your own. Consider clutches, wraps, jewelry, colorful bow ties, patterned socks and pocket squares.
COMFORT & CONFIDENCE
“Comfort is so important,” Mary-Kannon says. “You will be in these clothes for hours. Often, women narrow it down to two dresses that each look amazing. I always [advise choosing] the one that’s more comfortable.” Ultimately, you’ll be your best self when you feel at ease in what you’re wearing. – by Annie Ham

Complete your wedding day ensemble with jewelry worthy of the occasion
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Durham’s Jewelsmith specializes in custom jewelry design and heirloom makeovers. If you’ve inherited pieces from loved ones that are damaged or don’t match your style, take advantage of this unique opportunity to transform them into something fresh and wearable.
QUIET LUXURY
If your wedding palette is neutral or you’re pairing jewelry with a dramatic gown, delicate diamonds or pearls provide the perfect touch of understated glamour and elegance.
Create a cohesive, monochromatic look by choosing earrings, a bracelet or a necklace that feature the same stones or metal color. “Blue is traditional, but it’s fun to pick an unusual [stone] color, one that might be represented in your flowers or decor,” says Jewelsmith designer and sales associate Mary Coleman.
TIMELESS TRENDS
Your engagement ring will naturally take center stage among your wedding day adornment and help inform the rest of your jewelry choices.
“Recent trends in engagement rings are giving retro vibes,” Mary says. “Yellow gold is reigning supreme! Three-stone rings are back, as are wider bands paired with marquise and emerald-cut stones. I love mixed metals and colored center stones. My personal favorites are upcycled diamonds and vintage- or rosecut stones with personality.”

STRIKE A BALANCE
If bold, statement jewelry catches your eye, you’re in good company. A showstopping piece can shine even brighter when paired with color-coordinated gems or more delicate accessories, ensuring the focus stays on you and your dress.
“The ‘Kissing Ring’ has a name that evokes love,” Mary says. “The two stones are close enough to almost touch – a prelude to a kiss. As an engagement ring, this style can be very symbolic. Sometimes clients will have a sentimental family stone to use, while their partner wants to add a new stone, representing the past and present melding. Combinations of stones and metal [that could be used in this design] are endless, and two different shapes, sizes or colors work well.”

Finn Plastic Surgery
rom the moment clients step into our office, we make it clear that our goal is their happiness and well-being,” says Courtney Cochrane, marketing director for Finn Plastic Surgery. This commitment is especially steadfast for to-be-weds, she adds, noting that the team aims to ensure patients feel relaxed and confident knowing they are in expert hands. The practice, which was founded in 2010, employs board-certified surgeons who provide a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical treatments, prioritizing transparency and exceptional care.
Many wedding clients choose the popular HydraFacial, which delivers a radiant glow with no downtime, Courtney says, along with other treatments like SkinVive, Broadband Light and Botox. The providers develop detailed, customized timelines to meet each patient’s needs, regardless of the services they select. Finn also offers medical-grade skin care routines and recommendations for at-home product use and post-treatment care so that your complexion will be at its best on the big day.
“Many of our patients tell us they feel seen, heard and valued, which is something we take pride in maintaining across every interaction,” Courtney says.
Reign Beauty
eign Beauty specializes in wedding hair and makeup with a mission to serve clients of all skin tones and hair types. The company provides continual education to its team and collaborates with diverse clientele to ensure representation that is true to its brand, a core value since Marissa Davis founded the business in 2021.
Wedding clients typically begin their Reign Beauty experience with a trial run to test and perfect their desired look for the big day. Marissa explains that Reign’s artists take a holistic path to planning wedding day glam, taking into account elements like attire, floral arrangements, decor colors and venue location.“Rather than taking the approach that the artist knows best, we share our knowledge while respecting your personal preferences,” Marissa says. “We like to think of ourselves as your weddingday best friends, dedicated to bringing your dream look to life.”
Safe Keeping
Preserve your wedding day attire for years to come
ou’ll probably invest significant time and money shopping for your wedding attire and having it tailored to fit you like a glove. So, what should you do with it after you’ve tied the knot?
Decide if you’re comfortable passing your garment along to a family member, to-be-wed or someone in need. Many consignment shops have special sections for dresses and formalwear.
If you choose to keep your gown or formalwear in your own closet or hold on to it so you can pass it down to a family member in the future, it’s key to take the necessary steps to clean, preserve and protect these garments for the long term.
It’s just a fact – after a day filled with dancing and sweating, your wedding attire will need laundering! We recommend entrusting your garments to a professional cleaner who is experienced in caring for such pieces. This is much different than cleaning an article of everyday clothing! You’ll want to make sure any dirt that might have accumulated during your photo session in a meadow or a stain left from a spray of Champagne is carefully and delicately removed without damaging the fabric. Even if you don’t notice any visible stains, coming into contact with a variety of elements throughout your wedding likely left behind residue that will cause visible staining over time even if they are undetectable at present. Don’t wait – have your garment cleaned as soon as possible after your big day!
environmental factors,” says Brian Harrell, president of A Cleaner World. “By offering both options, clients can choose the service that aligns with their specific goals for their wedding gown, whether that’s personal use, sentimental value or potential resale.”
Medlin-Davis Cleaners prioritizes cleaning and preserving garments with sustainability in mind, and works to adopt updated methods as new technologies become available. “We listen and adhere to our customers’ preferences and use the myriad cleaning technologies at our disposal to ensure the very best care for every garment,” says Medlin-Davis President David Makepeace. David says that Medlin-Davis most often wet cleans wedding gowns it receives. “If we do choose to dry clean a gown, we use a solvent called Greenearth,” David says. “It is a silicone-based solvent that is chemically inert and breaks down into carbon dioxide, sand and water at the end of its useful life.”
In addition, Medlin-Davis employs professional tailors who can repair any damage that your dress sustained throughout the wedding day.
It’s also important to note that cleaning and preservation are two unique processes. “Gown cleaning ensures the dress remains in excellent condition for short-term use, while preservation is a safeguard against the long-term effects of time and
Similarly, A Cleaner World launders each garment with a unique approach depending on the state it’s in and other factors, “including the type and age of the fabric, the intricacy of the weave, lace and embellishments, the types of stains present and the exposure of these to environmental elements,” Brian says. After your garment is sparkling and fresh, there are options for preserving its beauty for the long haul. A Medlin-Davis associate can help you decide whether an archival, acid-free storage chest or a 100% muslin storage bag is best suited to your needs, and both of these are guaranteed to protect your attire for 50 years.
Catering
& Bar
Cost
Expect to pay about $65 to $140 per person for food with labor gratuities and taxes included.
Bar pricing varies depending on the alcohol you choose. Beer and wine only for 100 guests starts at $3,000. A midtier liquor package costs about $5,000 for the same amount of people.
Consider
Look to book a caterer about nine months in advance of your wedding. Some venues offer inhouse catering and bar services, or may require you to select from a list of approved vendors. Remember that labor costs may fluctuate depending on the service style you choose. For example, you’ll pay more for labor if you want to serve a plated meal, since your caterer will have to hire a higher number of servers. The same goes for the bar – the final cost will rise if you require more bartenders or want them to be on-site longer.
On the Menu
he Triangle boasts talented and inventive caterers who can serve up anything from a farm-to-table Tuscan feast for a summer wedding to Thai-inspired stations that will spice up any winter gathering. Let’s take a look at the main factors to consider when planning your meal, plus a few fresh, original ways to feed your guests.
CREATIVE CUISINE
Many caterers offer curated lists of dishes from which you can build your wedding day menu if you don’t already have a clear picture of what you’d like to serve. Rocky Top Catering, for example, offers a wide variety of dishes to choose from. These range from Mediterranean to Middle Eastern and are organized by seasonal availability. However, if you’re looking for something outside the options presented, they’ll
gladly brainstorm a custom menu with you, as will many Triangle caterers. “We try hard to give the couples exactly what they want for their special day,” says Southern Harvest Hospitality Group Director of Sales Rachelle Howard
“The mini stuffed peppers [pictured right] are an example of something that was not on our menu, but a guest requested,” she adds.
HL Catering Company works hard to continually refresh menus with inventive concepts. “We pride ourselves on constantly creating new menu items … from our liquid nitrogen frosé station to savory, salted blue corn waffle cones filled with tater tots, beef short rib and Gruyere beer cheese, we love innovating to make our clients’ wedding food dreams come true,” says HL co-owner and chef Houston Loper.
“We are always changing up our menus and playing with new dishes,” says PoshNosh Catering owner and executive chef Coleen Speaks. “But, [clients always love] our chickpea and tomato pani puri with cilantro chutney. So much flavor in a tiny bite!”
SERVICE STYLES
The way that food is dished up at your event is just as important to consider as the menu itself. There may be a variety of ways your caterer can serve your guests depending on the layout of your venue. Each style has distinct perks and drawbacks, so discuss the options thoroughly with your vendor team!
Since the symbolic gathering of two families over the dinner table is what the wedding meal is all about, why not serve guests in a fashion that promotes camaraderie? “My favorite [serving style] is definitely family style,” Coleen says. “This allows guests more varieties of food, creates a natural fellowship via
sharing platters and is by far the most efficient to serve.”
Stations are an interactive, fun option that can feed large numbers of people efficiently by allowing guests to choose the shortest of a few lines rather than having to wait for one buffet. “Stations, when done correctly, allow more mingling and catching up [than other options]! They offer a dynamic approach for your celebration,” says Vicki Tong, senior catering sales manager at Rocky Top Catering.
Nicole Flynn, marketing director of Catering Works, points out that stations also “allow for a more customizable menu for each guest rather than a single entree selection.”
Plated service is, of course, the most elegant way to serve a meal, and ensures that guests won’t have to stand in line waiting for their turn. If you want to provide an elevated fine dining experience, just know that you’ll probably pay more in labor costs.

Some caterers are pushing the boundaries of traditional food service and coming up with new solutions. “Instead of open buffets or stations, we love the idea of small, composed plates assembled behind a bar top,” Houston says. “We feel like it brings a sense of elegance to the service. The focus is on the final, composed dish and not the display, so it doesn’t take away from the beauty of the flowers and the [overall] design.”
ECO-FRIENDLY EATS
Discuss how to minimize food waste with your caterer if prioritizing sustainability throughout your event is important to you. Some food service styles will inherently minimize waste compared to others – for example, stations, buffets and family-style setups allow guests to choose their own portion sizes and toppings, resulting in less waste.
Nicole says that Catering Works “focuses on sustainability daily by sourcing [local ingredients], working with CompostNow in our kitchens to eliminate food waste, and utilizing compostable serving utensils or real china rather than plastics.
We care deeply about the source of our ingredients and reducing the carbon footprint of food miles.”
Taking seasonality into account is another way you can plan your wedding menu with sustainability in mind. Choose dishes that center on ingredients that will be in season and readily available during the time of year your event takes place. “PoshNosh is hyper-focused on seasonal, delicious food,” Coleen says. Similarly, many of Saladelia’s dishes include locally sourced and seasonally appropriate foods. For example, the flavor of the housemade jam included with the charcuterie platter (pictured on page 80) rotates throughout the year – cranberry with pearl onion is available during winter, and strawberry is typically offered during summer months.
Tasteful Trends

PRE-CEREMONY REFRESHMENTS
Welcome your guests with creative small bites and sips ahead of your vows. This is a fantastic way to kick off your celebration and let your loved ones know they’re in for a truly special experience. Plus, you’ll be more likely to avoid a crowd of people waiting for the bar to open when cocktail hour begins.
CUSTOM DETAILS
Think one step further than the food and beverages you’re serving. Customized products like drink koozies, napkins, drink stirrers and even decorated Champagne bottles that can serve as party favors will all leave lasting impressions on your guests.
LATE-NIGHT BITES
“We are seeing a lot of late-night snacks, such as a nacho bar, popcorn bar or soft pretzel bar, as well as assorted dessert tables,” Rachelle says. If you want to give your guests a boost to fuel the fun, consider a coffee bar or espresso martinis.
PLEASING PAIRINGS
Catering chefs are creating bold food and drink combinations that pack a punch of flavor and color in petite, eye-catching sizes.
CHAMPAGNE TOWERS
Newlyweds are opting to pour celebratory bubbly towers together as traditional elements of the reception, such as bouquet and garter tosses, have declined in popularity. Use classic coupe glasses, or switch things up with sparkling rose and berries, like the tower pictured on page 221.
Questions to Ask a Potential Caterer
• Do you have a minimum?
• Have you catered a wedding at our venue before?
• Which cuisine(s) do you consider your bread and butter?
• Can we create a fully customized menu?
• How do you handle food allergies and/or sensitivities?
• When would the menu need to be finalized, and when would final guest counts, entree selections or information for allergy accommodations be due?
• What sizes of plates, which utensils and quantities of dishes will be needed (specifically for station-style service)?
ake your bar a focal point of your reception and a welcoming gathering spot for guests!
First, determine whether your venue requires you to purchase a bar package in-house (and whether there’s a minimum cost). We highly recommend you seek out an experienced provider if you need to hire an outside vendor – a professional will anticipate your needs, offer advice and assist you in crafting a well-rounded bar menu that will please every guest.
Brewmasters Mobile works with couples to customize bar setups and services while coordinating and supplying all of the necessary items, from ice and cups to bartenders.
“[Our team] has years of experience working at weddings and draws from bar expertise at our five restaurants, which helps us stay up to date on popular drinks,” says Molly Youssef, who coowns the business with her husband, Morkos Youssef.
“Our team of bartenders are the main vendors that your guests will interact with,” Molly adds. “They are fun, friendly and get drinks out quickly so guests can continue enjoying themselves throughout the evening!”

SIGNATURE SIPS
Signature cocktails have become ubiquitous at weddings in recent years. It’s easy to see why: offering just a couple of cocktail options limits decision fatigue for guests and streamlines service, leaving more time for celebrating!
There’s plenty of inventive ways to craft a signature cocktail menu. Here’s a few ideas to stir your imagination:
• Focus on seasonality. Lavender lemonade spritzers are perfectly refreshing for a spring soiree, and what could be more fitting for a fall gathering than spiked cider?
• Stick to a theme. Go all-in on a specific theme or drink – for example, a martini bar could feature espresso martinis plus classic gin and vodka versions. Tie it all together with customized signage, drink stirrers, napkins or coasters.
Consider This
“Keep in mind [when hiring your bar provider] that you’re paying for more than the alcohol itself,” Molly says. Your vendor will provide guidance during the planning process and manage ordering, transportation of supplies to the venue, setup, efficient service via experienced bartenders, breakdown, liquor liability insurance and more.
After you’ve hired your bar supplier, determine whether you’d like to stick to beer and wine or treat your guests to an open bar. Molly says that a standard selection should “include a few beer options ranging from easy drinking to IPAs, two to four wine options, one to two hard seltzer and cider options, and liquor.” This ensures there will be something for everyone to enjoy, without overwhelming guests with too many choices. Plus, if you, your partner or a VIP guest are partial to a particular drink that’s not widely popular, Brewmasters will make sure to have a small stash of it on hand!
• Next-level presentation. If we eat with our eyes first, shouldn’t the same rule apply to drinking? Serve your signature drinks via a specialty shelving display or decorate your bar with extra florals for added drama.
• Think outside the box. If you really want to wow your guests, incorporate an unexpected offering, such as a bourbon tasting bar.
MOCKTAIL MAGIC
You can still have fun with your bar menu if you don’t drink or some of your guests are sober. Booze-free beverages like sparkling lemonade, kombucha and even creative mocktail versions of popular drinks are showing up on wedding bar menus left and right, and are another great way to tie in seasonal or personalized touches.
Cakes & Desserts
Cost
For cake, expect to pay $6 to $9 per slice. Cost varies for mini or individually sized items, but a good rule of thumb is to budget $5 to $9 per person for a dessert bar.
Consider
Book your baker no later than four months before the wedding or as early as one year in advance, especially if you want to ensure your top pick is available or your date is during a peak season. Ask about what may or may not be included with your order, such as specialty rental displays or cake stands, delivery and setup fees, and anniversary cakes. If you select a nontraditional dessert but still want the ceremonial element of cutting a cake, don’t forget to factor the additional cost into your budget. Most bakers offer sheet cakes – also called kitchen cakes –that can be added to your package.
Delectable Desserts
Bakers share tips and trends that are sure to leave a sweet impression on your guests
edding cakes have evolved into more than just dessert as couples continue to prioritize personalization in all aspects of their weddings. Modern cakes offer a special opportunity to embrace creativity, whether you opt for an artistic masterpiece or a simple but impactful design.
The key is to find a baker who can incorporate your style, vision and flavor preferences into a showstopper that reflects your unique love story – and will leave guests raving long after the last slice is served. These North Carolina bakers are mixing up new trends, from unexpected color palettes to mini bites, that take the cake.
MINIMALIST ELEGANCE
Uncomplicated designs still have a strong presence in the world of weddings. The Mad Hatter’s Café & Bakeshop showcases this with a stunning white buttercream cake featuring a modern, scalloped shape. “It’s simple but so elegant,” notes owner Fida Ghanem
Minimalist designs like this one pair well with mini cakes, cupcakes, cookies and other desserts that Mad Hatter’s offers, Fida adds. Couples can go as simple or intricate in their cake and cookie design requests as they want depending on their budget.
VICTORIAN VIBES
“Vintage designs [in various versions and styles] have been a lot of fun to decorate. We think this has been a popular choice because couples seem to be gravitating toward incorporating nostalgia and tradition in their weddings,” says Mindy Davisson, who co-owns Edible Art Bakery & Dessert Café with her sister,
A Lambeth design by Edible Art Bakery & Dessert Café is both sweetly sentimental and on trend. Photo by Fancy This Photography
Erin Seabolt. “It is sweet, sentimental and classic.”
These highly decorated cakes feature ribbon-like accents known as Lambeth- or Victorian-style piping. The classic, intricate decoration technique, which originated in Europe in the 1800s, creates texture and dimension – a bold contrast to the look of perfect, clean lines that many modern cakes exemplify.
ARTISTIC AND SCULPTURAL
A cake that looks like a work of art can be a true statement piece that acts as part of your reception
decor. Geometric shapes, abstract designs and textured elements are all ways your baker can incorporate your event design into your dessert. Ruth Drennan of Ruth Drennan Cakes is all in favor of this shift toward cakes that are “more like edible art,” she says, with layers of intricate and 3D elements, such as her specialty: lifelike sugar flowers.
In addition, “sugar flowers are a great choice for couples who want to preserve their cake toppers,” Ruth says. When properly stored in an airtight container, these faux blooms can keep indefinitely.
NATURAL BEAUTY
The trend of incorporating organic, natural elements remains strong as cakes adorned with fresh flowers, pressed edible blooms and even herbs continue to take center stage. Stephanie Richardson of
S. Richardson Cakes mentions that locally sourced stems or those with special significance are popular among her clients. “Using flowers from your family’s garden adds a personal and local touch to any cake,” Stephanie says.
FLAVOR INNOVATIONS
Forget traditional vanilla and chocolate – unexpected flavor pairings can both tantalize the palate and reflect a couple’s complementary traits. Erin says Edible Art’s matcha and white chocolate combo along with a lavender and lemon option are growing in demand. “My current popular wedding flavors are orange cardamom and summer berry,” Stephanie says.
Though, Ruth advises if you’re opting for multiple flavor combos, it’s essential to consider how these cakes will be served. “It’s better to have one
option if each person is being served a slice of cake,” she says. “But if the cut cake is part of a dessert table, then anything goes!”
PETITE SWEETS
Gone are the days of a single towering cake being the sole dessert option. Offer your guests a dessert table overflowing with a variety of flavors and styles like cupcakes, macarons, mini cakes and cookies.
STAR POWER
Vibrant shades, from deep jewel tones to metallic accents, can create a bold look that’s light-years from a traditional white cake. Gold leaf, stenciled designs and edible gilding will turn any cake into a statement piece sure to make a memorable impression.
VEGAN & GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS
Many couples are seeking ways to make their weddings more inclusive for attendees. The good news is the vegan and gluten-free options available are just as luxurious and flavorful as traditional desserts. Fida has leaned into this by offering delicious vegan treats like lemon petite dessert bites. These options ensure that every guest, regardless of dietary restrictions, can enjoy a sweet treat at the end of the evening.

Entertainment
Cost
Ceremony musicians average $600 for a soloist and $1,200 for a group. The price increases the more musicians and time you book. Upper-tier DJs in the Triangle start at $3,500 and can go up to $6,500 or higher depending on add-ons. Mid-tier DJs start around $2,500. Live bands cost anywhere from $3,500 to $10,000. Expect to pay $700 to $1,250 for a photo booth.
Consider
For both practical and aesthetic reasons, consider the size and layout of your venue in relation to the musical entertainment you select. If you have a guest list over 100, you’ll want a professional DJ or live band who can read the crowd and keep the party going. Your entertainer will control the flow of the evening, so it’s essential to hire a reliable, experienced pro.
our wedding can be as simple or as extravagant as you desire, but no matter the scale, remember that your choice of music and additional amusements will keep the energy high and contribute greatly to making your event a celebration remembered for years to come.
Start by selecting the musical centerpiece for your celebration: Will it be a live band, an ensemble or a DJ? A DJ might be the ticket for a high-energy dance party, while a live band can charm a mixed crowd of friends and family. Collaborate with your vendor to choose a music genre that complements your event’s mood, then consider what other elements you’d like to add to entertain and delight your loved ones, such as a photo booth where guests can mix and mingle while they wait to share congratulations and catch their breath between songs.
LIVE BANDS
Get the StartedParty
Make your celebration unforgettable with music and entertainment
Live music can elevate your celebration in unforgettable ways. Allyson Tucker and Samuel Dilks experienced this firsthand when they connected with ECE Raleigh, an agency that connects couples with live performers ranging from soloists to 22-piece bands.
The two were matched with a few live music options for their Raleigh wedding reception; they ended up choosing The Dundies, a four-member band from Lynchburg, Virginia, who perform a diverse repertoire that includes oldies, country tunes and current hits.
“We looked through the song lists they had, and we [saw that The Dundies] had most of the songs we like and the newest music in their playlist,” Allyson says, adding that she and Samuel also checked out online videos of the band. “The band aligned well with our tastes.”
Allyson says she and Samuel met with the band two days before the wedding to review final song selections and compile a “no-play” list. “We wanted [the reception] to be fun and upbeat,” she says. “I still have people tell me, ‘That band was the most fun!’”
Allyson advises that engaged couples prioritize their own musical preferences when selecting a band to ensure that they enjoy the song selections. “I’ve been to other weddings where the parents of the couple had more of a choice in the band,” she says, noting that when that happens, much of the music can be unfamiliar to many in attendance.
SPEAK NOW
Audio guest books, like the one from ZimZoom Photo Booth (pictured below) are a sweet way for your loved ones to leave well wishes. Some vendors, such as Spark Photo Booth, offer a dial-in feature that allows anyone unable to attend your wedding to leave a message. These audio files can be saved digitally and even shared on social media.
FREEZE FRAME
“What we offer is not only entertainment, but also heirloom-quality photos that will last you a lifetime,” says ZimZoom Photo Booth
owner Meredith Stern Photo booths have evolved far past the dark, enclosed booths you might have once posed in. Today, openair setups allow for customizable props and printing options, and it’s not uncommon to see 360-degree video booths and even roaming devices. All produce high-quality images that you and your guests have access to immediately via both physical prints and digital galleries.
Meredith encourages couples to think creatively about the setting for their photo booth, which can be highly customized. “You’re not limited to a backdrop,” Meredith says. “Let’s say you have a really fun couch where people can sit, or that you can take group photos at”– this setup extends beyond the limitations of a traditional photo booth, she explains, enabling creative poses and accommodating larger groups of guests for even more fun.
ZimZoom also provides newlyweds with an extra physical print of every photo their guests took at the end of the event.

DJS
Wedding DJs are professional entertainers who can read the crowd’s energy and adapt the music to keep guests on the dance floor. They also serve as emcees, directing the flow of events throughout the evening.
Stylus S.E. owner Jason Huggins specializes in high-energy parties tailored to each couple.

“What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong
“We’re not just providing a playlist, we’re providing a performance,” Jason says. “We have the unique skill set, the experience and the music to do that.”
Jason says that Stylus’ goal is to customize a once-in-a-lifetime experience for every client by incorporating curated lighting, special effects and music selections to match the couple’s vision and the venue’s ambiance. These elements can have a profound impact on the vibe of your reception, and an experienced DJ can truly transform the mood of the room.
“All that really matters … is whether or not we can pack the dance floor and make sure everybody is sweaty, tired and happy by the end,” Jason says. “The crowd tells me everything I need to know without ever having to say a word.”
CEREMONY & COCKTAIL HOUR MUSIC
Hiring an instrumentalist or small ensemble to perform during your ceremony is a nobrainer if you and your partner love the experience of live music. Keep in mind that you’ll need to add to your budget if you want the musicians to play through cocktail hour.
Harpist Sarah Cavaiani of Hummingbird Harmonies performs classic as well as modern love songs at weddings, crafting personalized playlists based on each couple’s preferences.
“I spend quite a bit of time getting to know couples throughout the booking and planning processes,” Sarah says. “I ask about their
vision, the mood they want to set, the genres of music they like and any special requests. This all helps me design an event that is unique to that couple. I mention a few things I like to play, but I find the most joy in creating the perfect [playlist] for my clients.”
Sarah says she personally loves to play cinematic music from movie soundtracks, especially romantic films like “Gone With the Wind,” “The Notebook,” any Disney or other Nicholas Sparks movies, and also “Forrest Gump.” Sarah ’s even been asked to play “Still Into You” by Paramore as brides walk down the aisle.
“That’s super fun, because it’s a song they really love, and it also translates well to an instrumental version,” she says. “The harp is so resonant in a way that other instruments aren’t. I think there’s something that reverberates with people with that particular sound, and you can’t replicate that with recorded music.”
NEW FRONTIERS
Spark Photo Booth owner Katie Cox says the use of AI portraits is a rising trend she’s noticed in the corporate event industry that she’s excited to see wedding clients embrace.
Spark offers the option to use cutting-edge facial recognition technology that applies filters to guest portraits, creating a unique and personalized result. A guest may decide to generate a portrait with their face shown in a retro yearbook frame, for example, or appear against an AIgenerated background in any setting, from a Victorian castle to an ’80s scene. Algorithms can instantly adjust lighting, color balance and clarity to further enhance images.
Spark offers a few interactive options – in addition to its open-air photo and video booths – that take wedding entertainment to the next level. Spark’s custom mosaic wall blends individual guest photos into a large picture of your choosing. Another option is a custom memory match featuring images collected from the couple, “maybe photos from their childhood or engagement pictures,” Katie explains. These are used for a
high-energy, interactive touchscreen game that includes a live leaderboard.
“I love being part of the event industry,” Katie says. “We’re [always] evolving.”
LIVE PAINTING
Stationer and artist Ashley Triggiano sets up her easel at events and weddings to paint beautiful watercolor and acrylic scenes. She added live painting to her offerings seven years ago (learn more about her stationery business starting on page 130). Ashley says she most frequently will paint a depiction of the ceremony, venue, bridal bouquet or a portrait of the couple.
Ashley preps her canvas ahead of time and says that she will typically paint for three or four hours during an event. This is usually enough time to complete the artwork, but if it’s a more detailed or larger canvas, she’ll complete it in her studio and send it to the newlyweds. Once finished, Ashley digitizes the painting so that prints can be shared with family and friends, and even used for thankyou cards! – by Anna-Rhesa Versola
Flowers & Decor
Cost
Couples in the Triangle, on average, pay $3,500 to $8,000 for full-service floral design, but many vendors will accommodate smaller or larger budgets. Some high-end designers have minimums starting at $5,000 to $6,000.
Decor is a blanket term for anything that elevates your setting, such as candles, which a fullservice floral designer will provide. See page 185 for party rental information.

into [that] and highlight the natural beauty of the space,” says Something Fabulous co-owner Trent Crumpler. “We look at elements that would create cohesion throughout the setting, [rather than those] that are going to compete.”
Vibrant color choices perfectly complement the vibe of this Durham, North Carolina, warehouse. Jewel tones of ruby and amethyst, plus a bewitching blue, feature in shimmering linens from Curated Events Raleigh and glittering wedding party gowns from Bella Bridesmaids Raleigh. Gold accents sparkle in flickering candlelight, bringing even more texture and magic to the scene.
Floral design and specialty rental company Petal & Oak – operated by TC Hospitality Group, the same folks behind The Cotton Room – supplied these
vivid florals that dazzle from every angle. Chrysanthemums, roses and carnations in striking shades intertwine throughout these unique arrangements.
“Couples are increasingly looking to reflect their personal style rather than adhere to traditional wedding norms,” says Melissa Powers, Petal & Oak’s creative director. “Unconventional color palettes allow for more creativity and individuality in design.” The deep wine and plum-colored blossoms pictured here are mitigated by soft pinks and greenery, she says, noting that additional balance is provided by the locale. “Industrial venues with raw and edgy aesthetics provide a striking backdrop for bold color choices. The contrast between the space and vibrant
colors can create a dramatic and memorable setting.”
Melissa also says that The Cotton Room’s high ceilings allow for tall, geometric metal structures, where flowers and string lights coalesce in eyecatching installations. Plush, cobalt couches from Petal & Oak’s extensive inventory of lounge furniture provide a place for imaginary guests to sit a spell.
Astral depictions shine throughout decor details as the evening proceeds. Menus take on lunar shapes, and sun- and mooninspired sips carry the theme into cocktail hour, followed by dinner, dancing and cake – a three-tier masterpiece by S. Richardson Cakes, adorned with smatterings of gold to mimic a starry night sky, can be seen on page 101.
Petal & Oak’s expertise in both floral design and rentals provided the perfect foundation to bring Something Fabulous’ vision for this romantic, moody soiree to life. This comprehensive approach to decor allows Petal & Oak to offer “a tailored experience where each detail is considered, ensuring that the floral elements align perfectly with the overall aesthetic of the event,” Melissa says. “It’s about building a relationship with clients to understand their needs and bringing their ideas to life through creativity and expertise.”

Flower Power
Florals designed to transition from ceremony to celebration can maximize both your budget and the beauty of your chosen blooms
By Renee Ambroso Styled by
omantic roses – the timeless symbol of love – and locally grown dahlias star in a lush altar display created by Katie Wright-Thomas, owner of KatieDid Florals. These stunning stems are set to capture attention during the ceremony, but with careful planning, they can also bring beauty to other parts of the wedding day.
“These pieces are designed and engineered to be repurposed for the reception in multiple applications,”
Katie Wright-Thomas designed these organic, garden-like arrangements with versatility in mind. The pair of tall vases make an impactful statement flanking the altar, while the floral meadows add visual interest along the aisle. Together, they can also be reimagined as a cohesive backdrop.
Katie says. “Most weddings, even luxury ones, repurpose florals [to enhance different phases of the celebration]. The key is to hire a knowledgeable wedding floral designer who knows how to execute a floral flip.”
Consider This
You’ll pay a bit more in labor costs for your florist to remain on-site to execute a floral flip, but it’s more budget-friendly than paying for additional blooms. “The pros are numerous,” Katie says. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fixed a broken boutonniere, replaced a stem in a bouquet after an energetic pre-ceremony photo shoot or helped the cake designer style flowers. Your florist is part of your team, and we love to be part of your whole day.”
The tall vases and low meadows shown here can smoothly transition to decorate a fireplace mantle, sweetheart table or cake display. They also make for striking photo booth backdrops, centerpieces and more.
“An experienced wedding florist is not only a designer, but a logistics and timeline expert, horticulturist and engineer who knows how to use floral mechanics creatively to make long-lasting, purposeful designs that can be beautiful in [multiple settings],” Katie says.
Bud Vases & Candles
Delicate bud vases that spotlight a few blooms each are a classic option for any tabletop. EW says filling a table with a few of these will cost around $55 to $65, depending on flower selection. Keep in mind that your floral design team will also provide candles to complete the look. In this setup, petite votives are mixed in with taller options to create a warm, layered glow and cover the space among vases. “The votive candles sit close to the table, which gives lower lighting,” EW says. “Pillar or floating candles fill in the next level, and then you have light coming from overhead or accent lighting.”

ariety is essential to a visually dynamic reception design, says Bloom Works director EW Fulcher. He suggests combining bold and more subtle elements to achieve the beautifully balanced and elegant decor pictured here.
“You could create a really high-impact look by placing, for example, four of the statement arrangements around the edge of the dance floor or perimeter of the reception space,” EW says. “This provides variety in size and height, so that each table doesn’t look the same. It’s a great way to stay within your budget, and at the same time, gives you the ability to use some larger pieces in the mix.”

Compote Bowl
This low dish is ideal for round tables, offering a perfect vessel for medium-sized centerpieces, which EW says cost about $65 to $95 each. Snapdragons, spray roses, bright zinnias and vivid ranunculus, among other varieties, draw the eye in this particular arrangement.
Statement Centerpiece
Of course, you can’t go wrong asking your florist to go all out with a show-stopping design if it’s within your budget.
“In high-profile arrangements, we use various sized blooms to [create interest] and highlight a focal point flower, like the large dahlias [shown here],” EW says. Prices for such pieces from Bloom Works range from $95 to $200 for a centerpiece of this size, he adds.
Paper & Gifts
Cost
Your paper budget should include invitation suites, escort cards, menus, programs, signage, welcome bags or tags and favors. Many stationery designers have a base cost of about $2,500. Depending on the paper and detail options you pick, costs can be much higher.
Expect to pay $1,000 to $4,000 for 100 fully custom invitation suites. Semi-custom suites start at $500 for 100 and go up to $2,000. Fully custom day-of items can cost $1,500 to $3,000, while semi-custom options range from $500 to $1,500 for a wedding of around 175 guests.
Gifts and favors for your partner, wedding party, parents, guests and vendors should be included in your estimated gifting budget.
Consider
Book a stationer no later than eight months in advance of your wedding to account for production and shipping time, since you’ll need to send savethe-dates no later than six months in advance (or as early as one year).
If you want custom designs, you’ll need to book your stationer eight to 14 months in advance.
THE INVITATION SUITE
If you want a fully custom design, book your stationer as early as you can so that they have time to get to know you as a couple and produce a concept that best reflects your desired aesthetic. “Your invitation is your guests’ first hint at how your wedding is going to look, and whether it’s going to be casual or formal,” says Terry Smedley, who founded stationery business Beau Papiere after offering paper design for clients of her wedding planning collective, Bess + Beau Wedding and Event Design
Your invites can be as minimal as an invitation insert and a single envelope, or intricate and highly detailed with as many as ten unique components. What you and your stationer choose to include should be based on your budget and specific needs, including the details you need to communicate to guests and what information you need to gather from them. An experienced stationer can guide you in formatting the proper language for your invites while composing a beautiful design.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Local stationers craft exceptional paper products to make your day unique
The traditional components of a polished invitation suite include:
• Outer and inner envelopes. The outer envelope originally served to protect the invite from wear and tear back when a long journey through the postal system may have involved trains and saddlebags. These days, destruction is less of a concern, and an outer envelope can be used to display a functional address, while the inner envelope is used to indicate a guest is invited or where children’s names can be included.
• Envelope liner. This is the first detail guests will see when they open their invite. Use this as an opportunity to display your wedding crest, a venue illustration or a pretty pattern.
• Invitation. This insert, typically 5-by-7 inches or larger, lets guests know who is hosting the wedding, who is getting married, as well as when and where the event is taking place.
• Details or insert card. This is where you can share specifics on accommodations, the reception location (if different than the ceremony venue), transportation options, your wedding website and registry links.
• RSVP card. The traditional way for guests to let you know if they plan to attend your wedding. If you’re serving a plated dinner, this is where they should indicate their meal choices, too. “The response card can also include transportation needs, dietary preferences or fun prompts like ‘I’ll dance if you play …,’” says stationer, live painter and watercolor artist Ashley Triggiano. If you’re hosting multiple events throughout the wedding weekend, details for those can be included here, as can a link for digital RSVPs if you’d rather collect responses that way.
• Return envelope. Not required if you’re expecting digital RSVPs.
• Belly band. Traditionally, this material is wrapped around the suite to hold all of the elements together. Modern options are endless: ribbon, translucent or printed vellum and twine are popular.
• Wax seal. A classic finishing touch.
PRINTING METHODS
There are a variety of techniques available, and each has something unique to offer!
• Digital printing: This is the most cost-effective option that also has the quickest turnaround, making it a clear winner if you’re working with a strict timeline! Digital printing also offers an incredibly wide color palette and endless opportunities for customization in ways that just aren’t realistic through other printing methods.
• Thermography: Slightly more expensive than digital printing, this method mimics the look and feel of engraving at a more affordable price point. Color range is limited, but thermography works well on many types of paper. It can also be combined with other techniques, like watercolor artwork and digital printing, throughout your invitation suite.
• Letterpress: This classic printing style is elegant and provides a luxurious, tactile experience for guests. Any color of ink can be used. “Letterpress is a completely unique look and feel,” Terry says. “It’s generally [printed on] thicker card stock. However, letterpress is also exponentially more expensive than digital designs.”
ASSEMBLY
Once you’ve made all your paper and design choices and your invites have been printed, there’s still one big task left to do: assemble and mail each one! This is more complicated than you may think, since each invite needs to be addressed accurately and prepared with the proper amount of postage.
“A lot of stationers don’t offer assembly, since it’s pretty labor intensive,” Terry says. “We [do in order] to provide continuity all the way through to the day of. The fact that our team are also wedding planners helps because we work to make sure we’re getting things done on time and correctly. We’re making sure everybody’s sending their RSVPs back, and that invitations didn’t get lost in the mail or returned to sender.”
DAY-OF PAPER
What your stationer can create for you doesn’t begin and end with your invites – most will be happy to design matching menus, escort card displays, programs, welcome bag tags, place cards, bar signs and more. Retaining your stationer to design these day-of products means they can develop a cohesive overall look and feel that aligns with your wedding aesthetic and the details of your invites.

Welcome Bags
It’s only polite to acknowledge the time and expense your out-of-town guests have undertaken to be present for your celebration, so show them a little Southern hospitality! We love the idea of asking your stationer to create a customized bag tag and insert that could include helpful tips like a list of local attractions, a map of the area, transportation details and a weekend itinerary, all matching the rest of your wedding paper.

It’s traditional to give parents a day-of gift. Pick something sentimental to show your gratitude for the effort and time they’ve put in to be there for you leading up to and on your special day. For a touching present to give your parents after the wedding, Kivus & Camera offers parent albums as an add-on to wedding photography packages.

Vendors
You should be sure to tip service vendors, like your hair and makeup artists, bar and catering staff and anyone delivering equipment (if a service charge is not included in your contract). Tips for other vendors like your planner or photographer are not expected unless the service is above and beyond, but it’s a nice gesture to give them a thoughtful gift.
Party Favors
While it’s not mandatory, this is a kind way to thank guests for attending. Photo booths are entertainment that do double duty, providing keepsake prints that guests can take home with them. Some vendors, like ZimZoom Photo Booth, offer fun, magnetic prints and retro kaleidoscope keychains!
Photo & Motion
Cost
Average wedding photography and videography packages range from $3,500 to $8,000. Full-day packages for many luxury photographers in the Triangle may be $10,000 or higher.
Consider
Packages may or may not include engagement or bridal sessions, photo albums, video trailers, drone footage, film photography and more, so discuss these with your photographer or videographer before you book them. Packages with shorter time frames cost less.
Aim to book a photographer and/or videographer a year in advance, or as soon as you’ve set a date.
Framing Your Forever
ou’ll likely spend more face time with your photographer and videographer on your big day than any guest, so it’s imperative that your personalities are compatible. Meet our recommended pros and learn a bit about them:
John Branch IV Photography
aleigh native John Branch IV began capturing celebrations in New York City in 2014, blending his background in audio production with a natural eye for photography. “I tried other genres, but engagement and wedding photography really stuck with me,” he says. John returned to the City of Oaks with his family in 2018 and continued to sharpen his skills, including videography. “I love what’s called hybrid shooting, or shooting photography and videography at the same time,” he says. “My overall approach and posing [prompts I give] are very motion-based – which leans toward videography – and makes the couple feel less stressed about switching from [one format to the other].”
John’s priority is creating a relaxed atmosphere that puts celebrants and their loved ones at ease on the big day. “I want couples to feel like I’m not just their vendor, but a part of their family, which helps everyone feel more comfortable [in front of the camera].”
At the end of the day, he’s a true romantic. “I’m [so] invested in my couples,” he says. “I definitely cry at weddings all the time. This is a little more than just a job.”

• Browse full real wedding galleries and films to see how the vendor you have in mind captures an entire day – from decor and details to the dance party – rather than relying solely on their social media highlights.
• Pay attention to how they’ve photographed weddings at your venue or during the same season as your event.
• Check for examples of their work in both outdoor and indoor settings, particularly when flash photography is required.
thrive on the energy of a wedding day,”
Danielle Volk says. “I love that no two [celebrations] are ever the same, and each is going to be a unique challenge, because you never know what the weather is going to do. … You have to be able to think on your feet and make magic for your couples, no matter what happens.”
Danielle discovered her passion for photography as a journalism student at UNC. She focused on portraiture and family sessions after graduation before shifting her career toward weddings. Her family’s return to the Triangle in 2013, after living in Japan, marked a turning point. “I pivoted almost exclusively to weddings [then],” she says.
Danielle’s galleries feature vibrant, true-to-life colors. “I want to ensure [my clients’] photos will stand the test of time,” she says, “so that when they look back in 10 or 15 years, they won’t feel like their pictures fall into a trend that has since gone out of style.” Beyond capturing beautiful moments, Danielle prides herself on being a problem solver for her couples; whether it’s fixing a wardrobe malfunction or easing pre-wedding stress, she’s there to ensure the day runs smoothly.
The Chase Collective
olby Chase was working as a church worship director and Whitney Chase was a nurse at Duke University Hospital when their paths first crossed. They tied the knot and, a few years later, Whitney began wedding photography as a side hustle. “It quickly became my passion that fueled me,” she says.
The business grew rapidly, thanks to Colby’s entrepreneurial spirit. “He encouraged me to try committing to [photography full time],” Whitney says. “He joined me [as a videographer] within a couple of months, after realizing how comfortable couples were when both of us were present during photo shoots, creating a double-date atmosphere.”
Now, their ability to seamlessly balance photography and cinematography is central to their process. “After [collaborating on] more than 140 weddings together, we work perfectly around each other to prioritize both our couples’ images and video without wasting their time having to do everything twice,” Whitney says. “Plus, their photo gallery and wedding film complement each other with cohesive editing styles.”
Whitney’s type A personality drives her to create organized day-of timelines and manage logistics of the business, while Colby “is always wearing his creative hat,” she says. “We are constantly encouraging each other to push boundaries, learn new things and improve to better serve our couples,” she adds.
Rae Marshall Photography Richard Barlow Photography
ae Coale picked up a camera at age 13 and “never put it down again,” she says. Her years of experience – she’s documented more than 500 weddings – shine through in uniquely emotive images.
“What makes me different is my artistic eye,” Rae says. She takes note of color, framing and location in order to capture images that “tell the full story of your day with a cohesive vision behind the art,” she says.
Rae values a balance of candid and posed images. “I like to get a mix of dramatic shots and fun, lighthearted ones,” she says. “I believe both are necessary to fully capture [a wedding day].” Her talent for creating avant-garde, sophisticated compositions is matched by her ability to encourage natural movement, resulting in striking photos that never feel stiff. At her core, Rae is driven by a desire to capture the warmth in people. “I fall in love with my couples’ stories and how I can translate those into long-lasting imagery of the things that matter.”
Fancy This Photography
astern North Carolina native Nikki Whitt Belch, a graduate of N.C. State University, founded Fancy This Photography in 2013.
“Once I realized that I could attract couples who … [aligned with] my ethos and my morals, I knew I could photograph weddings [with confidence],” Nikki says.
Nikki is known for her down-to-earth presence and warm personality, and effortlessly puts her subjects at ease while capturing images that feel like individual works of art. Her talent lies in preserving authentic connections and heartfelt moments.
Fancy This Photography had grown so much by 2020 that Nikki welcomed partner photographer Sarah Martin, followed later by Amanda Law and Courtney Collins, who completed this fabulous foursome. Nikki believes the team’s depth is a key strength. “When couples inquire with us, they tell us a little about themselves, and then I try to match them with the best photographer,” she says. “We also have more availability [on popular dates and during peak seasons].”
ichard Barlow’s career as an architect laid the foundation for his sharp eye for composition, but it wasn’t until he picked up a camera that everything “just clicked,” he says – pun intended.
Richard’s early work, displayed at Durham’s CenterFest and the Third Friday Durham Art Walk & Gallery Crawl, quickly drew attention for its crisp style and thoughtful framing. He began documenting weddings in 2009 and quickly earned enough business to allow him to transition into full-time professional photography.
Richard’s work has graced multiple Heart of NC Weddings covers over the years, and he’s become highly sought-after as both a commercial and wedding photographer for his editorial style as well as his experience and professionalism.
Richard, who’s witnessed hundreds of weddings, still finds joy in every event he documents, and he treats the couples who invite him to be part of their special day with the utmost care. “I love seeing all of it happen through their eyes each time,” he says.
Sarah’s photojournalism background and adventurous spirit make her a great match for creative couples planning unique weddings.
“Courtney and I do a lot of classic portraiture, though my work leans a bit moodier than [Courtney’s],” Nikki says. “Amanda’s style is also classic, but she’s really fun and outgoing, and a calming force [on wedding days].”
lyssa Kivus and John Kivus met as students at UNC’s School of Law, where they quickly bonded over a shared passion for photography. Elyssa had honed her skills in photojournalism, while John pursued it as a hobby. They embarked on a group photo walk, capturing landscapes and street scenes on one of their early dates, and soon, they were inseparable.
Elyssa later revived her photography passion to document weddings for friends, and eventually, clients. “I was miserable practicing law,” she says, “and in 2017, I had enough wedding and portrait work coming in to quit [that profession].” Kivus & Camera took shape, with John – a full-time attorney – stepping in as Elyssa’s primary second photographer and tech support.
“I have a fairly journalistic approach, but love really colorful, fun [compositions],” Elyssa says, adding that she enjoys working with couples who are excited to celebrate with their loved ones and who understand that, while their wedding is special, “it’s one of many amazing days in their lives.” Kivus & Camera

Picture-Perfect Possibilities
Discover the Triangle’s top spots for your engagement shoot and how to plan a session to remember
tell couples that an engagement session is like a first date with your photographer,” says Danielle Volk , founder of Danielle Volk Creative . “Your photographer is the one vendor you’ll spend the most face time with on your wedding day, so it’s a great way to get a sense for your posing style. And, you’ll want to make sure they’re somebody you connect with, who you’ll be comfortable having in getting-ready suites with you and during those emotionally charged moments of your wedding day.”
Fancy This Photography founder Nikki Whitt Belch agrees. “The purpose of [an engagement session] is twofold: It gives the photographer a chance to get to know the couple, and it gives the couple a chance to take professional photos that aren’t in formal attire. These images can be used for save-thedates and the wedding website.”
CONSIDER THIS
• Is there a restroom or changing area available?
Think about the vibe of your wedding venue when it comes to selecting a setting for your engagement portraits. “Use this as an opportunity to add variety in your overall photo/video collection,” says photographer Richard Barlow. He recommends choosing a location or activity that’s part of your day-to-day life as a couple. “I’ve done engagement sessions at CrossFit gyms, at breweries and on hikes. … This is an easy way to help let your guard down and get the really good photos to happen,” he says.
• Do you need a pet-friendly location?
• Is a permit or appointment required?
• Does the location close at a specific time?
Elyssa Kivus of Kivus & Camera takes a similar approach. “I want an engagement session to feel like a date that I’ve been documenting,” she says. “I encourage couples to think about things they genuinely enjoy doing together, whether that’s being out in nature or, for a couple who like spending time playing video games, we could have a photo session at home. … I want your personality to shine through.”

The 164-acre museum park is dotted with beguiling sculptures. “The museum is a beautiful location, and it does have a visitor center where you’re able to change outfits,” Danielle says. You’ll encounter a variety of backdrops for your portraits here. “There’s the structural elements of the museum itself and the art pieces, and also a lot of natural, open spaces,” Danielle says.
Elyssa recommends visiting ahead of time to narrow down your favorite areas. “[Choosing] two to three locations will make the session more efficient,” she says. Also keep in mind how far from the parking area you’ll be. “If your session is during summer, you won’t want to be walking very far,” she adds. “[And], for those final moments around sunset, make sure you’re finishing up close to the parking lot.” The park closes at dusk year-round.

Also note that an expansion is ongoing through early 2026, which may impact logistics and which parts of the gardens are open to visitors.

Restaurants & Bars
A photo session at your favorite eatery or the brewery where you had your first date can make for fun, sentimental images, but may require a little extra planning.
Elyssa says she often schedules engagement sessions on weekday evenings for ease. “Sometimes crowds can be cool, but some couples feel awkward if there are lots of people watching them.”
Consider how comfortable you feel taking photos in a public setting, or arrange for your session to take place before opening or after closing for a more intimate experience.

Parking is easy at one of three decks on campus, but avoid scheduling your session when there’s an event taking place at the neighboring Durham Performing Arts Center or Durham Bulls Athletic Park. CONGER + BENSON
Aclassic palette of gold, green, black and white brought Katie Conger and Harrison Benson’s wedding to life. The high school sweethearts kept their love strong through college and exchanged vows on Nov. 18, 2023, at the historic Saint Mary’s Chapel in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their journey to the altar began with a romantic engagement in Charleston, South Carolina, culminating in a beautiful ceremony just eight months later.
“We didn’t have much time to plan a wedding, which was a little stressful,” Katie says. “We got so lucky with the vendors that were available, and it turned out perfectly.”
The couple chose Fancy This Photography after viewing founder Nikki Whitt Belch’s portfolio, including wedding galleries she had captured in similar chapel settings.
“Nikki was so sweet and fun, and made us feel comfortable and beautiful,” Katie says. “She felt like our best friend [during the event, and] everyone adored her. [Nikki is] so lovely and amazing and such a talented photographer.”
One of the highlights of having hired Fancy This, Katie says, was that she and Harrison received a sneak peek gallery of photos the day after their wedding.
The special day included many traditional elements. During the reception at Carolina Country Club, the couple unearthed a bourbon bottle they’d buried a month earlier – a Southern wedding custom thought to ward off storms. “The weather was absolutely beautiful on our wedding day,” Katie says. “It was 75 and sunny in the middle of November!” – by Lauren Rouse

Stacie Lawson and Jose Labra Escudero matched on Tinder in February 2020. Jose was scheduled to deploy with the Marines two weeks later, but the pandemic changed his plans, and he and Stacie continued getting to know one another. “It’s crazy to think that if we hadn’t met during that brief window, our lives would be completely different,” Stacie says.
On March 15, 2024, the pair wed at downtown Raleigh’s Market Hall – an easy pick for the couple. “We knew immediately that Market Hall was right [for us],” Stacie says. “You can feel the history in that space.” Madison Martin of Something Fabulous Weddings & Events provided support as they planned from out of state. “The flow of the day was perfect,” Stacie says. “Madison made sure everything happened when it needed to, and we didn’t have to worry about a thing.”
Stacie and Jose’s pup, Bronson, greeted guests as the ceremony began. At the altar, Bronson and Stacie were in for a surprise.
“[Up till] the night before the wedding, Jose had long hair past his shoulders,” Stacie says. “You can imagine [my shock] walking down the aisle to see him with a fresh haircut and in his uniform. It literally took my breath away.” Photographer Kivus & Camera preserved Stacie’s reaction, and many other magical parts of the day, like the wedding bands being passed among loved ones to bless with a prayer or wish.
“Kivus & Camera captured everything beautifully, from the tender, sweet moments to the fun, party vibe of the reception,” Stacie says. “There is so much love and happiness present in all of the photos.”

OGBO + ZHAO
Dikenna Ogbo and Jane Zhen Zhao’s relationship spans years and continents. It began at UNC, where the couple met at a campus ministry. Two years later, their friendship blossomed into romance while Jane was studying abroad in Singapore and Dikenna in France. The couple dated long distance for three years before Dikenna proposed in 2023.
Colby Chase and Whitney Chase, the husband-and-wife photography and videography team behind The Chase Collective, captured the splendor of the big day on May 2, 2024, at Oxbow Estate. “They were super easy to communicate with,” Jane says. “Whitney and Colby were very fast in their turnaround, both in responding to our messages and [in how quickly they delivered] photos and videos.” She says Whitney and Colby were relaxed and flexible throughout the wedding day, allowing for last-minute changes and putting everyone at ease. “The wedding party felt comfortable and not anxious about having their photos taken,” Jane says. “They were incredible.”
The ceremony incorporated scripture and prayer read in Igbo and Chinese and was arranged in a unique circular design.
During the reception, guests captured memories with ZimZoom Photo Booth and enjoyed mouthwatering Nigerian cuisine and Asian sweets and snacks – one of several ways Jane and Dikenna paid homage to their respective cultures. “We tried to combine both sides of our family. We had a [Chinese] tea ceremony for my side, and the Nigerian music, food and dancing for his side,” Jane says. – by Izabella Counts

Wedding Planners
Cost
Full-service planning and design fees can range from $5,000 to $14,000 depending on the scale and specifics of your event. Some full-service planners will charge a base fee plus a percentage of your overall budget. Partial planning services range from $4,000 to $6,000. Month-of planning or event coordination starts around $3,000.
Consider
If you try to save money by planning yourself, you’ll likely end up spending a valuable commodity: time. If you choose to hire a professional, do so as soon as possible after determining your guest count and wedding month. An experienced planner will save you time, money and stress in the long run.
Keep in mind that planners vary in price based on level of experience. Each has a unique perspective and background – for instance, some are more designoriented, while others are more organizational. Remember to ask about taxes or administrative, service or travel fees that might be included.
Calm in The Chaos
Take it from us – hiring a wedding planner could be the smartest decision you make for your big day
f I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if my life was really like JLo’s in the movie “The Wedding Planner,” I would probably be able to afford a Tesla by now.
I have seen many types of events over the years. Whether the bulk of the logistics leading up to the big day were being overseen by the catering manager, venue manager or mother of the bride, one thing has always remained the same – during the wedding, there needs to be a point person on-site who is solely focused on the overarching timeline and flow of the celebration.
My mom likes to say that, as a wedding planner, I am like a maid of honor for hire. Someone who has overseen every revision of the timeline, who will ensure that you actually sit down and eat during dinner and who knows that your Great Aunt Sally should under no circumstances be left chatting with your new mother-in-law.
In addition to these unofficial responsibilities, your planner will manage vendor communication in the final days leading up to the wedding, confirm rental, catering and floral orders to ensure everything is accounted for, help navigate inclement weather planning and any last-minute changes, and see to it that even if something goes wrong, there is a team of professionals in place who will mitigate those problems with ease.
Regardless of whether you’re looking for a full-service planner or someone who will step in to assist during the last 60-90 days (not day-of coordination, which doesn’t really exist, but that’s a soapbox for another day), the No. 1 piece of advice that I like to share with couples when they are in the beginning stages of planning their wedding is to define their top three priorities.
Before booking any vendors, you and your fiance should independently sit down and rank your top three priorities for your wedding weekend. If there is overlap among your six items, move those to the top of your combined list.
If you both decide that food is the most important part of the day, but you don’t care as much about florals and decor, you now know where to appropriately allocate your budget.
Meagan Culkin has spent the past 17 years contributing to and executing events. She began working at country club banquets, then evolved into operating an online bakery while planning weddings on the side. In 2011, she opened her own planning company, Magnolia Collective, and “grew a team that is much more organized and patient than I am,” she says. Eventually, Meagan made her way into the world of consulting and educating fellow wedding professionals, and joined the Heart of NC Weddings team in early 2024.
We can share industry averages about how most people spend their wedding budgets (see page 24 for a full budget breakdown), but ultimately, it is your day and your wedding should be reflective of your personality, style and what’s most important to you.

ou’ll be in safe hands with any of the experienced vendors recommended in this chapter. However, not all wedding planners offer identical services. Use this guide to help you determine which level of service best fits your needs and budget.
Full-Service
Seeking support from start to finish? A full-service planner will have your back and provide comprehensive assistance, from brainstorming the perfect color scheme to mocking up floor plans and a timeline to make sure the day is executed seamlessly. Seek out a full-service planner as soon as possible after getting engaged to make the most of their guidance. They’ll take care of countless details so you can focus on celebrating!
Full-service may include (sometimes for an additional fee):
• Budget management
• Event design
• Vendor coordination and logistics
• Attending venue tours and vendor meetings
• Managing an inclement weather plan
• Coordinating your rehearsal dinner and welcome party
• Planning honeymoon travel
Partial-Service
This level of support may be ideal if you’ve already made some progress in securing a venue and some vendors but still need hands-on help. You’ll be in the driver’s seat for some tasks, and your planner will take the lead elsewhere. You’ll still benefit from your planner’s professional guidance and logistical advice, but at a lower price point than fullservice planning.
Month-Of
Even if you’re comfortable handling most of the details yourself, we wholeheartedly recommend calling in a pro to help manage all the moving pieces. In reality, there’s no longer any such thing as day-of, or even month-of, planning; coordinating a wedding weekend requires vendor communication and management starting two to three months in advance.
Venue Coordinator
Many venues require a venue coordinator to be on-site during weddings, but know that their role is very different from that of a wedding planner. A venue coordinator will oversee any venue-specific details, like load-in, load-out and staffing.
Meet the Planners
nce the initial euphoria of being engaged wears off and the reality that you’re about to plan one of the most significant days of your lives sets it, it’s perfectly normal to wonder where to begin. This is when you should turn to an experienced professional.
“Try to level-set with a planner early on,” says April Pyatt, founder of Socialite Events. “This will help minimize sticker shock. The more [knowledge we can share with you quickly], the less overwhelming the process will be.”
Whether you feel equipped to handle the bulk of the details on your own or prefer to share your vision and then leave the rest to the pros, book your planner as soon as possible so that they can guide you in establishing your budget, priorities and generally set you up for success.

PLANNING MANTRA “Efficiency makes me happy!” – Diane Haskett
Diane Haskett founded Vui Co., formerly Bustled Events, seven years ago. The business rebranded at the beginning of 2025 to better reflect her vision. “It took us a good four to six months to brainstorm a [new] name,” Diane says. “[Vui Co.] is a reflection of my heritage. I’m Vietnamese, and ‘vui’ means ‘fun’ in Vietnamese.”
Diane says she’s known for being “full of energy without any caffeine.” She uses that drive to go above and beyond expectations, ensuring each guest or fellow vendor has what they need during an event.
But the job is a rewarding one. “The perk of being a planner is being able to witness so many wonderful moments in the lives of our clients,” Diane says.
Anthem House
Sisters Dana Kadwell (pictured left) and Courtney Hopper (pictured right) began planning weddings in 2006. The duo subsequently partnered to open a venue called The Bradford and several other weddingrelated business ventures. Amanda Honeycutt joined Anthem House as creative director in 2022, and she, Courtney, Dana and the collective possess decades of combined experience executing events of all sizes. Anthem House offers bespoke packages tailored to the needs of each couple.
“[Our couples] trust us to create meaningful experiences that set the stage to tell their story,” Amanda says.

PATEL + WARD
Kunal Patel, who moved from Karjan, India, to North Carolina at age 7, met Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina native Grace Ward while both attended UNC Wilmington. The couple was introduced through mutual friends and started dating in 2019.
Kunal proposed to Grace in 2023, and together they embarked on planning a fete that would include traditions from both of their respective cultures.
After settling on Rose Hill Estate as the backdrop for their vows, Grace and Kunal hired Chad Biggs Event Planning & Design “My now-husband and I came to Chad Biggs with a million unrealistic dreams for our all-day affair with two ceremonies, two meals and a huge guest count,” Grace says. “Chad and his team were absolutely brilliant. Chad created the most perfectly curated day we ever could have imagined. To top it off, the team were diligent in researching Indian weddings.”
The couple prioritized the traditional elements of both ceremonies while providing a lavish experience for their 300 guests. “Chad had experience with fusion weddings and was able to recommend culturally competent options, such as an Indian DJ who could provide music from both cultures,” Grace says. “I highly recommend Chad and his team for any wedding – American, Indian or otherwise.”
On May 11, 2024, the big day began with the baraat – the groom’s processional entrance on horseback – and concluded more than 12 hours later with a sparkler send-off. After their exit, Grace says, “I told Kunal it was the richest I had ever felt, and that we would be rich as long as we have family and friends who love and care so deeply about us.” – by Rebecca Savidge

ALLEN + DEBO
High school sweethearts Bella Allen and Brad Debo grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and attended Orange High School. Brad proposed at Bella’s family lake house, surprising her with a picnic on the dock and an upgraded diamond for the ring they chose together.
The pair wed at The Merrimon-Wynne House on Jan. 14, 2023. “I had always loved [the venue] and its aesthetic but wasn’t sure if it would be the right fit until we toured it,” Bella says. “[That’s when I] instantly knew it was the place we’d get married.”
Bella stunned in a classic ballgown while Brad and his groomsmen sported traditional tuxes. The bridesmaids wore attire from Bella Bridesmaids Raleigh, while the couple’s moms both dazzled in ensembles from Kannon’s Clothing
Bella says that Anthem House Creative Director Amanda Honeycutt and her team were invaluable in helping to fulfill their vision of an elevated event. “We worked with Amanda and her team for over 15 months, so we formed a close friendship,” Bella says. “[They ensured] the design was elegant and timeless so that we can look back on it in 50 years and still be obsessed.”
Guests enjoyed Mexican cuisine, the couple’s favorite, for dinner. HL Catering Company provided the meal, along with churros and chocolate for dessert.

GWYNN + JACKSON
Jermond Jackson proposed to Jacqueline Gwynn at a family gathering in Lake Norman, North Carolina, after the couple had been dating for almost 15 years.
On May 27, 2024, the pair exchanged vows at ZincHouse Winery & Brewery in Durham, North Carolina, the city where they’d first met. The couple had quickly fallen in love with the 87-acre property, which includes sprawling vineyards and contemporary buildings. They subsequently hired April Pyatt, founder of Socialite Events, to help organize and execute their dream event.
Jacqueline and Jermond met with a handful of wedding planners before finding their perfect match in April. “She was so nice that I felt comfortable with her immediately,” Jacqueline says. “She had a quick turnaround time on our initial consultation and understood everything we were going for.”
Jacqueline says April advocated for her and Jermond’s interests while attending vendor meetings and helping them to select the rest of their team.
On the big day, navy and rose gold tones reigned throughout the details, from the wedding party’s attire to the place settings.
“I wanted to sparkle and shine on my wedding day,” Jaqueline says. She turned heads in a Dany Tabet gown from Raleigh’s White Bridal Boutiques, while Jermond and his groomsmen donned navy suits.
Jacqueline says the meal – including black and blue ribeye, stuffed chicken and a baked potato bar from caterer Cake Couture Boutique – was a highlight, as was dancing with her new husband during their reception. – by Annie Ham

DAVIS + EVANS
John Davis and Monte Evans’ serendipitous meeting could have been a movie scene. The setting: a local bar. The plot twist: Monte, who was being set up on a date, hit it off with John instead.
Six years later, on May 11, 2024, the pair tied the knot at Heights House Hotel in Raleigh, North Carolina. The couple say they immediately knew the elegant boutique hotel would be the perfect setting for their big day. “The grandeur and historic charm of the house itself exudes a modern sophistication combined with vintage warmth that truly can’t be found anywhere else,” John says.
The grooms also had full confidence in Something Fabulous Weddings & Events
“Trent Crumpler, Ashley McElroy and Madison Martin of Something Fabulous demonstrated unparalleled professionalism and creativity throughout the entire process,” John says. “They took the time to understand our vision and preferences and offered suggestions that elevated our event into something truly magical. Their ability to coordinate various vendors, manage timelines and structure the planning process into digestible bites ensured a stress-free experience for us and our guests.”
John and Monte opted for a classic blackand-white theme with personal touches, like photos from their relationship displayed around the venue. Beau Catering dished up Southern favorites like shrimp and grits and oatmeal cream pies – a nod to John and Monte’s shared North Carolina roots. BROTHERS + MELVIN
Altria Melvin and Medford Brothers found common ground instantly – both had attended high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In April 2023, Medford proposed by surprising Altria with all of her favorite foods: popcorn, chocolate, breakfast and coffee.
Altria and Medford enlisted the help of wedding planner Angela B. Cameron, founder of An Event Lady Production, to ensure a smooth and stunning event. “Relax and plan with no stress by making sure you have a proper team to support and guide you,” Altria advises engaged couples.
Angela says the pair trusted her wholeheartedly. “They understood the value of planning and the importance of staying within their budget while prioritizing what mattered most,” she says. “Family was at the heart of their celebration.”
Angela helped plan an elegant weekend at River Landing in Wallace, North Carolina, where the couple’s friends and family enjoyed on-site accommodations. River Landing’s Mad Boar Restaurant & Pub hosted the rehearsal dinner, and the pair exchanged vows at the clubhouse veranda on Aug. 24, 2024.
“Altria and Medford fully embraced the beauty and versatility of River Landing,” Angela says. “They transformed the veranda into an intimate ceremony space, while the foyer offered an elegant setting for cocktail hour, complete with a photo booth and cocktail tables.” Decor in olive green, chianti, sand and ivory contributed to a welcoming feel. In addition, a custom monogram decorated the invites, cake, dance floor and the couple’s attire, resulting in a cohesive overall design. – by Lola Oliverio

HASKETT + WOLK
Chris Haskett and Diane Wolk met in 2016 at a workout boot camp. Their friendship grew over time, and they started dating in 2017. That same year, Diane founded Vui Co. (formerly Bustled Events), blissfully unaware that one day she would use her planning prowess to design her own spectacular wedding. When the pair got engaged, they began searching for a venue that would offer accommodations on-site for their elderly guests. The Umstead Hotel and Spa checked that box and more. “As soon as you pull in, you feel like you’re transported to a destination,” Diane says. “You feel the tranquility and peacefulness of the space.”
The Umstead’s lawn provided ample space for the unique, circular ceremony setup Diane envisioned, carefully arranged to highlight the unity of her and Chris’ blended family. “We didn’t want the ceremony to be short and sweet,” she says. “We wanted people to hear about our journey, what our second love meant to us and [the importance] of having our kids be part of that [rather than rushing right to the party].”
Unfortunately, scattered showers loomed during their big day on May 17, 2024, so the celebration was relocated indoors. (Let this serve as a reminder to always, always make a rain plan!) Chris, Diane and their children held hands in a circle, promising to love, support, grow and laugh with one another. Then, each family member poured a unique color of glass shards into a vessel that was later transformed into a vibrant sculpture. “It was very important to us to have our kids be part of the ceremony and see

the importance of our families coming together,” Diane says.
Fare provided by The Umstead was a highlight as the evening continued. “All of my guests raved about how their steak and fish were cooked perfectly,” Diane says. “The food was stellar.”
Guests danced off their exceptional meal beneath an intricate installation created by Bowerbird Flowers & Apothecary and Get Lit Event Lighting. Cakes, cookies and tarts from La Recette Patisserie lined a decadent dessert table, and the couple surprised Diane’s brother with MilkLab boba tea (one of his favorite drinks).
Pops of fuchsia featured throughout the reception decor, and vivid pink joined aqua in the table settings and centerpieces. “I wanted to go with what was true to myself. I gravitate toward brighter colors because it matches my personality,” Diane explains. “Those colors reflect who I am and what I wanted to see.” The lively palette was also a nod to the couple’s shared love of the beach. “I grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, and Chris grew up in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina,” Diane says. “The blue really tied in our love for the ocean.”
Diane relied on her personal sense of style and self while planning, which ultimately resulted in an event that was “elevated but still fun,” she says.
Implementing mood boards, she adds, helped to solidify her early ideas into a cohesive design. “Creating these was really helpful to me to visualize and put it all together,” she says.
Diane relied on her longtime personal friend and Bowerbird Flowers & Apothecary founder Diane Joyal to create intricate floral displays for the event. “There’s so many beautiful [flower varieties] out there,” Diane says. “I wanted the texture of [many different] flowers and all of the color that spring offers.”
Linens, chairs and glassware rented from Curated Events Raleigh plus lounge seating and other items from Greenhouse Picker Sisters enhanced “the whole feel of the experience,” Diane says.
Diane encourages couples to build a reliable team of vetted professionals no matter the scale or scope of their wedding. “When you hire these vendors, you’re hiring them because you like what you’ve seen [of their work],” Diane says. “So trust in that and trust in the person you hired to do what they do best.” – by Izabella Counts
Rentals
Cost
Basic linens start around $23 each, while specialty patterns may cost as much as five times that. Chair prices vary by style, with popular Chiavari models costing about $10 each. China, glassware and flatware rentals range from about $0.65 to $2 per piece, while chargers cost $2 to $3 each. Larger items like sofas, bars, bar backs, umbrellas, arbors, dance floors and more vary in price, so work with your party rental supplier to estimate the total cost.
Consider
Your rental needs will largely depend on your venue’s layout and features, including what it provides, such as tables, chairs or tents, as well as the number of guests you’re inviting. Be sure to ask your supplier about taxes, service fees and delivery charges that could impact your final expenses.
Set the Stage
Elevate your wedding day with party rentals ranging from essential tableware items to statement decor pieces
ental selection can be overwhelming because it’s a lot of decision-making in a realm that’s unfamiliar to most couples,” says Curated Events Raleigh Director of Sales Alyssa Ruth. “We’re so proud to have a talented team of event consultants who can guide you through the process, answer questions about what works aesthetically and functionally, and make the rental journey as joyful and effortless as possible.”
We suggest you rely on party rental professionals, along with your wedding planner, venue coordinator, floral designer and other vendor team members, to guide you in selecting the right rentals and determining the quantities you’ll need. Your venue’s characteristics will play a major role in this decision, as some rentals may be provided, while others may not. If you’re planning a full tent build-out, keep in mind that transforming an outdoor space into a comfortable setting for dining and dancing requires significant infrastructure. Even if your venue provides tables,
chairs or certain tabletop items, you may want to add specialty pieces like an eyecatching escort wall, colorful glassware or an upscale lounge vignette to enhance your reception design.
COCKTAIL HOUR
It may seem obvious that you’ll need tableware for guests to dine on during the reception and chairs for them to sit in for the ceremony, but don’t forget to provide additional furnishings for cocktail hour.
“Oftentimes couples will not account for enough furniture, leaving guests to juggle appetizers and drinks,” says American Party Rentals Senior Event Specialist Natalie Bell. “We recommend bumping up the number of standing tables and highly encourage adding low pub tables (four-seaters) into the mix – your older guests will thank you.”
LUXURIOUS LOUNGING
“If space allows, adding a lounge vignette is a great way to create a comfortable setting for guests and add color and texture to the overall room design,” Alyssa says. “[This
also] gives guests a thoughtful place to spend time together if they aren’t inclined to be on the dance floor.”
TRENDING TABLESCAPES
“I am seeing a lot of green and blue color schemes,” says Julie Lutje, a certified event rental professional at Best Tents & Events. “Our green Sultan’s Garden chinaware has been heavily [requested] because it is so unique yet elegant. Velvet linens are also popular as they provide a textured but simple look. Another thing I personally love are Champagne towers – our Symetrie Champagne coupes are just perfect for this!”
Alyssa agrees that vibrant tabletops are making waves in current wedding design. “We’re seeing lots of colorful linen selections and statement china full of patterns and bright colors,” Alyssa says, noting that Curated Events Raleigh regularly adds new items to its inventory to provide couples with plenty of options.
Alyssa advises carefully considering how your tableware will enhance the overall impression of the reception decor. “Think about what your dinner table preset will look like, as this is the first ‘wow’ moment when guests walk into the reception,” she says. “Will there be plates, chargers, menu cards
and maybe a preset salad course? Or, if you’re having a station format dinner, will any tabletop items be preset at the table, or will they all be at the stations?” Decide which items will be part of the initial look and which will appear after guests sit down to dinner.
“If you love the look of your dinner plate, but you’re serving a plated entree, you should consider renting a second dinner plate per guest to use as a preset show plate,” Alyssa says. “These small additions can make a huge difference in how detailed and impactful your overall design is. Guests may not remember each tiny detail, but they’ll remember the big picture when it all comes together beautifully.”

Your Chariot Awaits
Logistics play a huge part in shaping your guests’ experience. Here are some tips for making travel the smoothest part of your big day.
RESERVE EARLY
High-quality transportation options book up quickly, especially during peak wedding season. Look to reserve your preferred vendor as soon as you confirm your wedding date and venue, or no later than six months in advance. Your guests have probably traveled from near and far to be present at your event, so make sure nobody will have to wait around for an Uber at the end of the evening!
COMMUNICATE CLEARLY
Make sure to provide guests with detailed schedules, pickup and drop-off locations and other transportation details in advance. Include this information in your invites and share via your wedding website to avoid any last-minute confusion and to reduce the risk that any guests traveling on their own are late. Also confirm these details with your transportation service ahead of time, especially if your venue has restrictions on parking or loading, to reduce delays.
CONSIDER COMFORT
Think about the length of time guests will be traveling. Features like air conditioning, comfortable seating and refreshments (such as water or soft drinks) can make a big difference, especially in particularly warm or cold weather.
THE RABBOTT
Rachel Abbott, owner of The Rabbott, brings a fresh approach to the Triangle’s party bus scene. The Rabbott – a clever twist on Rachel’s first and last name – offers customizable services designed to make wedding days, bach parties and other events memorable, enjoyable and worry-free. With nearly a decade of experience – and personal insight as a recent celebrant herself –Rachel says it’s important to look for a transportation service that provides great energy and attention to detail.
For example, Rachel takes a proactive approach to route planning, researching venues and identifying potential traffic issues for those needing transport among multiple sites. She then crafts a detailed document outlining times, dates and guest counts so couples can relax and enjoy the day.
Rachel welcomes custom requests, too, like the digital slideshow she arranged for a couple to play on the bus TV for their guests during the ride. The Rabbott’s other amenities include leather bench seating, LED lighting and a Bluetooth sound system, plus thoughtful touches like a mini fridge, complimentary drinks, an emergency sewing kit and more.
Rachel’s dedication to her clients has led to unforgettable moments, like the time a bachelorette group invited her to join their dinner after bonding throughout the day. “I was so touched that they invited me to hang out with them instead of waiting in the bus!” she recalls.
ACCOUNT FOR BUFFER TIME
Traffic, detours and unforeseen delays can throw off even the best schedules. Your planner should build a few extra minutes into your day-of timeline, but an experienced transportation vendor will be familiar with local traffic patterns and parking, helping to ensure everyone arrives relaxed and on time.
DESIGNATE A POINT OF CONTACT
Ask your wedding planner or someone else you trust to coordinate with the transportation vendor on the wedding day. This person can manage any last-minute questions so that you can enjoy the day without interruptions.
CONSIDER ACCESSIBILITY
If you know you have guests with mobility challenges, be sure to discuss any specific accessibility needs with your transportation company in advance.

Venues
Cost
North Carolina wedding venue rentals vary greatly in cost. The biggest factors determining how much you’ll spend are the size and season of your event. Popularity and location may also affect pricing. Room or venue rentals may cost anywhere from $4,000 to $12,000. All-inclusive venues range from $10,000 to $30,000.
Consider
Remember that nonpeak dates and weekdays may be significantly less expensive than Saturdays, especially in spring and fall.
A blank slate rental is very different from an all-inclusive venue fee, which may have costs for overnight accommodations, catering and bar packages, party rentals and more incorporated into the bottom line. While it may seem more expensive to book an all-inclusive site, keep in mind that you’ll need to pay for all of these things separately if they’re not included in your rental fee.
Ask about vendorspecific policies (including preferred vendor lists), payment schedules, cancellation protocols, overtime fees, insurance, liquor policies and add-on costs.

serene atmosphere, cultivated through decor in blue and buttery yellow tones, greets guests at The Distillery. The Garner, North Carolina, event space has a modern, industrial feel that’s perfectly suited to the innovative design of this mock gathering.
Venue owner Chad Biggs – also the founder of Chad Biggs Event Planning & Design – embraced the versatility that The Distillery offers, he says, while orchestrating this classic yet forward-thinking photo shoot.
“The beauty of an expansive, industrial space lies in its adaptability,” Chad says. “It serves as a refined canvas that allows every wedding to become a unique masterpiece.”
This particular masterpiece was driven by Chad’s vision of a timeless aesthetic inspired by the style of Ralph Lauren and infused with a relaxed Floridian vibe. “We wanted guests to step into a

space that invites them to pause and soak in the significance of the moment – a gentle, serene ambiance that mirrors the calm yet exhilarating journey of two people beginning a new chapter together.”
Sky blue, soft greens and bursts of yellow mingle in floral print linens from American Party Rentals. “Each fabric selection was intentional, combining classic patterns with refined textures to create a setting that’s warm, inviting and slightly bold,” Chad says. These materials are paired with organic elements like bamboo fronds and white orchids, plus delicate chinoiserie.
The Distillery’s open floor plan allows the theme to flow seamlessly from room to room and revelers to progress from ceremony to cocktail hour to dinner with ease. “Couples and their
guests remain immersed in one beautifully cohesive environment, avoiding the need for transitions or weather-related adjustments,” Chad says.
Each wedding at The Distillery begins in the luxurious lounge, where couples and their loved ones can relax and prepare for the day ahead. The White Room hosts ceremonies and receptions in its generous 7,500-square-foot space with lofty ceilings and clean lines. While models (and real-life husbands) Brian Gainey and Tyler Gainey are pictured in intimate embraces in these images by Rae Marshall Photography, the room is spacious enough for 300.
The setting allowed for bold arrangements by Heritage Floral Design to reach new heights. Graceful bamboo stalks act as a unifying element throughout the decor, Chad says, elegantly framing the aisle, altar and reception setup.
Tables set with fine china, glassware and flatware from American Party Rentals are accompanied by classical centerpieces featuring hydrangeas, roses and greenery, as well as whimsical, spherical shrubs that add a funky twist to the scene.
“Every detail we design is a reflection of the couple’s journey, their personalities and their dreams,” Chad says, reflecting on the day. “Curating a wedding as unique as each couple’s love story is an absolute privilege and the heart of what we do.”

Fur-ever Love
Four fun ways to incorporate your pups in your wedding day
here are a number of creative and memorable ways to include pets in your event, whether you want them front and center or honored through subtle details. However you choose to incorporate your furry friends, you’ll be happy you did!
PAW-FECT PRINTS
Make your pets the mascots of your big day! Commission a local artist or stationer like Ashley Triggiano to paint or sketch your pets. These illustrations can be utilized for bar menus, place cards, embossed napkins or even your invites.
ENGAGEMENT PORTRAITS
A pre-wedding photo shoot is a perfect chance to capture special memories with your pet if they aren’t allowed at your venue or otherwise can’t take part in the day itself. Read our tips for planning a successful engagement photo session on page 144.
CEREMONY COMPANIONS
If including your pets in the ceremony is essential to you, determine before you book a space whether dogs are allowed inside the venue or on the property. And be sure to ask if there are rules about whether they can remain on-site while food is being served. You should also consider if your pup is comfortable with crowds, unfamiliar environments, sitting still for more than a few minutes and when they’re separated from you.
Pet concierge services like Dogs Like Ash make it easier to involve your dog in your special day. A handler can bring your dog
to the venue, watch them until it’s time to walk down the aisle or pose for portraits and take them for potty breaks! Dogs Like Ash also offers boarding, so that you can set off on your honeymoon without worry.
GIVE BACK
Honor your pets by including opportunities to donate to local animal rescue organizations in your registry. You can even bring adoptable dogs to your cocktail hour or reception! Dogs Like Ash partners with Second Chance Pet Adoptions to bring adoptable pups – dressed in snazzy accessories – for guests to meet.

European aesthetics and grandeur set the stage for an unforgettable celebration at Britton Manor in La Grange, North Carolina. This English-inspired estate, situated on 80 acres of lush gardens and picturesque landscapes, opened to the public as a premier event venue in 2023. The circa-1990 family home, which is owned by Stephen Hill, exudes old-world charm and sophistication, offering a stunning backdrop for weddings. “Britton Manor isn’t just a venue, it was someone’s home, making [it] a desired space to come and retreat with family and friends while experiencing one of the most important days of one’s life,” says Britton Manor Executive Director and Lead Designer Kandis Harvey. “We don’t want guests to feel like they have to rush [through their wedding]; we want each couple to feel the magic and charm that this private estate has to offer.”
This styled showcase, designed by Heart of NC Weddings Editorial Shoot Creative Director Amy Plant-Perdue, highlights the manor’s striking architecture and sprawling grounds. “The property is expansive, and there are so many unique spaces that lend themselves to a number of different uses,” Amy says. “There are multiple areas that could function for your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception … you can have a lot of fun with it, and your wedding can look completely different from anyone else’s.”
The color scheme, featuring dazzling berry and pink tones, complements the venue’s landscape and is reflected beautifully in the Knock Out rose bushes that
dot the property. Lavish arrangements by David Zelaya of Dazel Florals command attention in this romantic setting and further enhance the lush design. “I knew this was a color palette that would work well here,” Amy says. “The space, especially the Glasshouse and the open lawn, is neutral enough to allow for decor in almost any hue.” This dynamic scene was captured by Colby Chase and Whitney Chase, the husband-and-wife photography and videography team behind The Chase Collective.

Amy’s design philosophy centers on working with the venue’s natural aesthetic. “I never go against a venue’s looks,” she says. “… I like to lean into its vibe. Britton Manor is luxurious, maximalist and meticulously manicured in terms of the lawn and the landscaping. So, I designed an event that would go along with that … one that felt opulent and maybe a little bit over the top, while incorporating current wedding trends.”
Amy utilized David’s Garden for an alfresco ceremony setup
facing the pergola and organized a lavish reception featuring cascading florals and a late-summer menu crafted by Funky Fresh Catering inside the venue’s glass-enclosed greenhouse (more details on page 242). Delicate china, linens and glassware from Best Tents & Events in neutral tones allowed the bold blooms to take center stage.
Beau Papiere also contributed to the polished sensibility. Owner and lead designer Terry Smedley provided a unique escort card display that was carefully mounted on one of the garden’s statues, creating an eye-catching focal point.
“Our goal was to create a cohesive look that would be striking, yet refined, and still reflect the timeless aesthetic our brand is known for,” Terry says. “The vibrant pink and red tones offered a chance to embrace current trends while ensuring that the stationery remained sophisticated and wellsuited to the overall vision of the photo shoot. The invitation suite in dusty blue added a soft element in contrast to the bright colors, creating an overall harmonious feel.”
Beau Papiere’s bar signs encourage guests to sample cocktails by Brewmasters Mobile – a cherry gin and tonic and a Tom Collins, specifically – and incorporate illustrations plus a floral crest with elegant white ink on a pale blue background, echoing the look of the invitation suite.
Of course, a wedding celebration is mostly defined by the people it honors. Edwin Barnes and I took on that role for this editorial, donning stylish looks fitting for the dashing affair. Bernard’s Formalwear supplied a white tuxedo, and White Bridal Boutiques showcased two breathtaking dresses – a Lazaro gown with romantic, laser-cut lace and a matching cathedral veil, and a Stella York organza ballgown with chic, puffy sleeves fit for a princess.
“When I look at [the Lazaro], it screams Victorian meets modern to me,” says White Bridal owner Heather DiMasi. “It’s romantic, it’s timeless, it’s elegant. It’s also got a little diva thrown in there.”
Hair and makeup by Reign Beauty’s Marissa Davis was tailored to the enduring style of the event. A sleek bun brings focus to the Lazaro gown’s high neckline (and, Marissa says, is ideal for the unpredictable weather of a fall or winter wedding), while a bold red lip that aligns with the color scheme offers a classic, yet dramatic, look perfect for any season.
The day’s resplendent flair certainly set the bar high for my and Edwin’s own 2025 wedding. We might even borrow the Champagne tower concept – which overflowed with berryinfused sparkling rose, a delightful twist on the traditional bubbly –for ourselves.
Tucked away on 80 acres of lush gardens and majestic landscape views. Prepare to be swept off your feet by the sublime beauty and timeless elegance of Britton Manor, eastern North Carolina’s premier wedding venue. Nestled in the heart of North Carolina, our manor boasts of unparalleled charm and a rich history that will add a layer of enchantment to your special day.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Booking a room block at a hotel near your venue is a good idea if you have many guests traveling from out of town. Doing so means the hotel will ensure there are rooms set aside on the dates of your event, and your guests will oftentimes enjoy a group rate and additional perks, like flexible check-in or check-out time. It also removes the stress of researching hotels for out-oftowners who are unfamiliar with the area and streamlines transportation if most of your guests are staying in the same place.
You’ll find the Triangle is home to many stylish, outstanding hotels, from luxury stays like The Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary to boutique options like The Mayton, also in Cary, The Durham Hotel and Heights House Hotel in Raleigh.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
Landon Estate (depicted above) is slated to open in spring 2025 on Polenta Road in Clayton, North Carolina. Owners Blake Gotliffe and Megan Gotliffe named the venue after their son, Landon. The Gotliffes, already wellknown for their Under the Oak Catering services, have catered to numerous local weddings since 2017.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to not only have a catering business, but to [own] a venue and be able to operate both out of the same [location],” Blake says.
The Gotliffes purchased the circa-1828 Sanders-Myatt House – the second oldest existing home in Johnston County, North Carolina – in March 2024, with plans to renovate the 3,500-square-foot house and transform its 4-acre property into an event venue.
Updates to the home include expanding the existing porch into a wraparound design and converting two bedrooms and an exterior addition into two spacious dressing suites. Historical details, like the original
hardwood floors, will be refinished and preserved. The venue will feature a catering kitchen and connect to the newly constructed Main Hall via a nearly 3,000-square-foot bluestone patio once renovations are completed. The 6,300-square-foot Main Hall will offer several spaces for guests to mingle and celebrate; a great hall, with exposed wood beams and elegant chandeliers, will be the largest space, complemented by a cocktail lounge with a stone fireplace and bar. The outdoor kitchen on the patio will include an Argentine grill and wood-fired pizza oven, allowing the venue to offer a distinctive open-fire catering menu. Three mobile bars will allow for creative indoor and outdoor service.
The property will offer a total of three outdoor ceremony sites as well as options for indoor vows. In addition to weddings, Landon Estate will host fundraising and community events for the Autism Society of North Carolina, with 10% of its profits benefiting the organization.
Raleigh’s Baucom House exudes mid-century modern charm. The venue’s name pays homage to the Baucom family, who owned and farmed the land from the early 20th century until the 1960s. The estate once spanned several hundred surrounding acres, most of which is now owned by the City of Raleigh.
College friends and business partners Michael Paramore and Keith Rogers purchased the circa-1967 estate in January 2021. Eager to breathe new life into the vacant yet picturesque 14-acre property, they embarked on an extensive renovation project.
The co-owners aimed to preserve the 5,300-squarefoot ranch’s mid-century aesthetic while incorporating contemporary updates. “Our goal from day one has been to capture the charm that [we could envision] both inside and outside of the home,” Keith says. “We wanted to achieve this without sacrificing modern luxuries.”
The makeover included a complete redesign of the primary bathroom and kitchen. “The kitchen was originally very closed off, with low ceilings and metal, robin’s egg blue cabinets,” Keith says. “We raised the ceilings, tore down a massive wall, redid or relocated all the cabinets, tore up the old floors and made several other related upgrades.” A few of the original cabinets, freshly restored and powder-coated, are featured in the new kitchen island.
The house now offers two spacious getting-ready suites: one with a lounge and bar perfect for pre-wedding brunch – plus a
roomy vanity area – and a second featuring a billiards table, video games and a mini bar.
Additional upgrades include fresh paint inside and out, new white oak floors throughout (except for in the living room, where the original 9-inch oak boards with handmade walnut pins remain), along with plumbing and electrical updates.
The original 1,600-square-foot red brick patio provides a serene setting for an alfresco cocktail hour, while ceremonies take place under the shade of towering oak trees on the lawn. Michael and Keith also added a permanent 5,000-square-foot reception tent with concrete floors large enough to host up to 250 guests.
Graham Settle acquired Spring Hills Farms Estate & Events in 2020. This scenic property in Carthage, North Carolina, was once one of the largest black truffle producers in the United States. It now offers three- to five-night stays for couples seeking an unforgettable wedding weekend immersed in nature. Guests can enjoy walks, lawn games, fishing and other recreational activities across the estate’s 250 acres.
The ceremony site features an arbor crafted from cedar trees grown on the property, offering views of the 15-acre Morses Lake. Nearby, a 20,000-squarefoot sod pad allows for tented receptions with pleasant views of the lake, rolling hills and hay fields.
A two-story cabin, built in 1971, includes a full kitchen and king-sized bed, serving as both accommodations for overnight guests and a place for the wedding party to prepare on the big day.
Renovations are underway to transform a viewing deck overlooking the truffle fields into a comfortable space for rehearsal dinners and welcome parties. They are scheduled to be completed by February 2025.
Syed Yousuf and Samreen Nawaz , owners of Cary’s Kababish Café, purchased 19 acres in Siler City, North Carolina, in 2021 with plans to construct an elegant venue.
The 7,200-square-foot Splendour Event Barn is slated for completion by early 2025 and will offer a lavish interior featuring seven chandeliers imported from Turkey, epoxy floors and a second-floor dressing suite. In addition to the barn, a serene outdoor site will be available for ceremonies and cocktail hours, and a second climate-controlled barn on the property houses another getting-ready suite. Guests will enjoy the convenience of more than 200 parking spaces adjacent to the main barn, and couples who tie the knot at Splendour can select catering from Kababish’s Pakistani and Indian menu or hire an outside caterer.

The 1893 House, located at 516 N. Blount St. in Raleigh’s historic Capital District, is undergoing a renovation that’s set to finish in early 2025. This grand neighborhood flourished in the late 1800s, bolstered by the construction of the nearby North Carolina Executive Mansion in 1883.
The 4,900-square-foot 1893 House will showcase a new addition, a speakeasy-style basement bar and a contemporary interior transformation while preserving key historic details.
“We wanted to do a full [renovation], keeping some of the historic charm but adding modern comforts,” says developer and project
manager Philip Forbes. Certain details, like the 130-year-old windows and the slate roof, will remain intact, complemented by luxurious upgrades to fixtures and finishes in the bedrooms, bathrooms and parlors. Interior designer Tula Summerford of Design by Tula selected bold, modern materials, including a striking marble accent wall in the foyer, to create a glamorous atmosphere. Highlights include a pink bar with LED lighting on the main floor and vintage chandeliers that enhance the home’s ambiance.
The four-bedroom property is available for full rental, offering privacy for intimate gatherings such as rehearsal dinners for up to 75 guests. Additional amenities include on-demand concierge service, complimentary hairstyling from a licensed cosmetologist for up to eight guests, customized grocery and beverage stocking prior to arrival, daily turndown service and more.
NEWS AND UPDATES
A new Hartley Botanic greenhouse was installed within Britton Manor ’s extensive landscaped gardens in spring 2024. This elegant structure, called the “Glasshouse,” provides an additional elevated setting for ceremonies of up to 90 guests and receptions for about 65 at the La Grange, North Carolina, venue. The Glasshouse, which is climate-controlled for year-round use, will gain additional shades in 2025 to enhance cooling during warmer months. The building also features a unique floor design that matches the entryway of Britton Manor’s main house, creating continuity among the venue’s spaces.
Step back in time and into love at Baucom House. Located in Raleigh, NC, our mid-century modern estate from 1967 offers contemporary luxuries alongside historical charm. With two distinct wings for bridal prep, scenic outdoor ceremony spots under ancient oaks and a beautiful white tented reception area, Baucom House is where your mid-century modern wedding dreams come true!
The Carolina Manor House in Fanklinton, North Carolina, enhanced its property with grapevines and a charming gazebo (crafted from cedar trees that once grew on-site) in May 2023. The venue plans to complete a second planting of the vineyard using two-year-old vines in February 2025.
Knightdale’s Haven Farm unveiled a new pavilion in April 2024.
The structure, nestled next to Haven’s chic white barn and serene horse pasture, seats up to 125 guests for ceremonies or accommodates about 140 for standing events and cocktail hours.
Don Neal and Joann Neal, owners of The Cornealius Properties in Goldsboro, North Carolina, completed construction of Heritage Hall in April 2024. This 4,000-square-foot reception venue, which features a catering kitchen and restrooms, is designed primarily for couples tying the knot at the LewisAtkinson Home (one of The Cornealius Properties’ ceremony sites), although some choose to showcase its cathedral-style windows as the backdrop to their vows.
Other additions to the property include a new, open-air pavilion that adjoins the Lewis-Atkinson Home, as well as a new 900-squarefoot getting-ready suite inside a converted country store. The space offers a cozy retreat complete with a billiards table, foosball table, kitchenette, sleeping loft and bathroom.
The Neals also acquired a 9,500-square-foot building half a mile from the venue, which was renovated to house six guest suites, a banquet room and a French market-style patio. The property, called The Cornealius Inn, opened to guests on Nov. 1, 2024.
Chapel Hill’s Union Grove Farm added a new open-air pavilion in late 2024. The 2,400-square-foot structure, originally a barn that came from Georgia, was moved to the property and now sits beside the venue’s tranquil pond.
The pavilion combines rustic charm with modern sophistication, boasting eight large windmill fans and string lighting that creates a warm ambiance perfect for ceremonies, cocktail hours or dinner and dancing. It comfortably hosts gatherings of 200 to 225 guests.
Raleigh’s 1705 East underwent a renovation and rebranding, reopening as Millbrook Manor in September 2024. The event venue, operated by Rocky Top Catering, expanded its full-service bar and lounge, providing more space for cocktail hours and events. The ballroom also gained square footage with the removal of a wine cellar and is now large enough for 200 guests. Other cosmetic updates include new light fixtures in the foyer and dining room, fresh paint and new carpeting.

ees trickle through Haven Farm’s orchard on a bluebird day in May, coaxed forth by spring’s temperate visage and the allure of sweet exploits. Striped umbrellas cast gentle shade over a gathering of imaginary guests on the neighboring patio.
Real-life spouses Micah Beachy Gilkeson and Taylor Gilkeson tied the knot just two days prior to portraying nearlyweds in this happy scene. Micah, wearing a custom Be Everthine gown with a lacy bodice and removable full skirt, sports an updo and peachy lip by hair and makeup team The Bardot.
Taylor’s classic ensemble from Bernard’s Formalwear follows suit with a cheerful peach bow tie.
“The Bardot team was incredibly talented, kind and professional,” Micah, who owns her own social media and marketing business, M Creative Society, says. “Thanks to their expertise, I felt confident and beautiful throughout [the day]. ”
The festivities began under Haven Farm’s newly completed pavilion (more details on page 244) before transitioning to the patio for an alfresco cocktail hour, followed by dinner and dancing beneath the barn’s modern five-piece chandelier, custom-crafted from a tree that once grew on the farm.
Haven’s handsome barn, charming stable – which serves as one of the venue’s two getting-ready suites –and firepit are a natural extension of the property’s past life as a working equine farm. Even today, goats, horses and miniature donkeys graze and meander on a portion of its 40 acres in Knightdale, North Carolina.
Subdued gray tones and black accents define the venue’s “country chic” personality, according to Director of Sales and Services Jaclyn Hamilton, and set it apart from other barn venues in the Piedmont that lean more traditional.
“Because the venue has a lot of existing black in its barn doors and windows, I wanted to make
sure this spring-focused design would feel natural in the space,” says Heart of NC Weddings Editorial Shoot Creative Director Amy Plant-Perdue. These moodier colors temper pastel arrangements by Heritage Floral Design and the on-trend bow motifs adorning the invites, attire and a Sugar Euphoria cake.
Paper products perfected by Lauren Wilkinson of Wilkinson Creative Co. strike a delicate balance between current and classic. “We used the color palette and scalloped edges to bring in a playful and trendy feel,” Amy says. These touches are anchored by timeless stationery features, including a custom monogram, floral patterns and cursive lettering.

to balance the lush florals … that feel like a mini garden,” Amy says.
This whimsical style plays right into Heritage Floral Design’s wheelhouse. Co-owner and lead florist Chris Batts excels at creating lush arrangements with vibrant color and texture. Low, dish-like vessels hold overflowing meadows at the head table set with Party Reflections linen, glassware and fine china, “giving the feel of a container garden,” Amy says. Pairing this romantic decor with Haven’s rustic and contemporary spaces alike achieves a look that’s both current and timeless. reat food and gracious hospitality are cornerstones of any memorable celebration, and these qualities shine at every Melrose Knitting Mill event. The lovingly restored warehouse on downtown Raleigh’s North Dawson Street, which was reimagined as a venue in 2014, is managed by Umbria Hospitality Group. It has become a go-to for unforgettable rehearsal dinners and weddings together with its ground-floor eatery, Mulino Italian Kitchen & Bar (which originally opened as the Moroccan-influenced Babylon Restaurant in 2009), offering a delightful dining experience with carefully curated menus and a warm, welcoming Southern charm.

The circa-1900 structure served as a textile mill for three decades before sitting vacant for the better part of the next 80 years. Today, its turn-of-thecentury craftsmanship is on full display. Gracefully arched windows framed by umber brickwork, exposed beams and vaulted ceilings punctuated by dripping chandeliers create a warm, inviting ambiance for up to 180 guests.
The ocher tones across Melrose’s walls, wood floors and ceiling provide “a clean, neutral base upon which to build,” says Amy Plant-Perdue, editorial shoot creative director for Heart of NC Weddings. This balanced backdrop allows for the playful collision of pattern and color like those featured in Curated Events Raleigh’s newest collection of exclusive linens, lounge furniture and tabletop rentals highlighted throughout this editorial.
“There are four different textures and patterns layered together in the place settings,” Amy says. Keeping the palette limited to shades of blue and yellow helped maintain cohesion overall while embracing variety. “I also look for similarities in patterns that tie them together,” Amy says, adding that scale is also a factor to consider. “The linen in the Jayden Indigo pattern is a really large floral print, so we chose china with more delicate patterns,” Amy says. The menus, designed by
stationer Ashley Triggiano, fan open for easy reading, adding a unique touch to each place setting.
Tall floral arrangements by The English Garden, making use of branches to mimic trees, soften Melrose’s industrial elements while also filling the space between tables. “This concept brings the outdoors inside,” Amy says. Greenery also takes center stage in asymmetrical altar arches, adorned with peonies and dainty chamomile daisies, where real-life spouses Alexis James and Tevin James exchange vows with a view of downtown.
“The large windows flood the space with natural light, making Melrose a dreamy indoor ceremony spot, especially during the off-season when outdoor locations would be extremely hot or cold,” says photographer Danielle Volk. Lounge chairs, an unconventional but luxurious choice for ceremony seating, offer comfort for guests and can be repurposed for later in the evening. The third-floor space
is made reception ready while cocktail hour takes place in Mulino’s lush courtyard. Amy suggests maximizing the use of specialty rentals in multiple phases of the event to streamline logistics and get the most value.
While revelers mingle, the couple and their entourage pose for portraits on Melrose’s front steps. Alexis dazzles in a Gilded Bridal gown, its intricate beadwork leaving a lasting impression. “The soft, flowy fabric definitely stands out in a more industrial space,” Amy says. Glossy waves and neutral glam makeup by Reign Beauty accentuate this off-the-shoulder style. Tevin shines in an emerald suit from Bernard’s Formalwear while the wedding party wear jumpsuits and dresses from Bella Bridesmaids Raleigh for a stylish, modern touch.
The evening continues, and guests strike poses at ZimZoom Photo Booth’s customized Pro Booth while DJ Stylus S.E. sets the tone for a lively celebration as local wedding pros gathered for our annual mixer following the photo shoot. Attendees enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and a mini chicken-and-biscuit station, and left with personalized mini Champagne bottles handpainted by Ashley, each its own tiny work of art.

“Heat is the greatest factor to consider for coastal events in the summer months. Not only will this affect your guests, but flowers will wilt at a faster rate and ice will melt, so consider starting the festivities later in the day to make for a more enjoyable experience overall.”

BEACH CEREMONIES
Picture yourself strolling down a sandy aisle, the rhythmic waves of the Atlantic Ocean serenading your steps as you meet your soul mate. If this dreamy backdrop speaks to your heart, an oceanfront wedding could be your perfect match! North Carolina is home to beautiful beaches (find more Outer Banks-specific info on page 280), but there are a few logistical details you should be aware of if you want to get married on one:
• Check the permit requirements for the area where you’re looking to host your event. Each location has different laws – for example, Cape Hatteras National Seashore requires a special use permit (and a fee of $100 to $200) for a ceremony of any size. Yes, this includes beaches adjacent to private properties on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands, and south of the town of Nags Head on Bodie Island!
• Public beaches don’t have a maximum guest count, but most aren’t available for private rental, meaning you’ll be competing for space with beachgoers, and there’s no guarantee of privacy. Private beach access is the only way to ensure privacy for your ceremony.
• You absolutely need a plan for what you’ll do if the weather is not working in your favor!
• Keep in mind that there may be higher levels of humidity near the ocean. This means paper menus, place cards and signage will be damaged more easily if not protected by a frame.

The vibrant coastal city of Charleston, South Carolina, is a mere few hours from our state’s capital. It’s a popular location for bach parties due to its bustling nightlife, but it also shines as a full-scale wedding destination. The Holy City’s streets are lined with exquisite architecture and enchanting settings that exude Lowcountry charm. Couples and guests alike can enjoy the city’s fabulous culinary scene and moderate weather during their stay as well.
• Visit Charleston can supply copies of the Official Charleston Area Visitors Guide to include in welcome bags for any out-of-town guests who may be new to the city. These can be shipped to you ahead of the wedding, mailed to guests or even delivered to your hotel. The guide includes insider tips, maps and other essential information for exploring Charleston.
• Your guests will have no shortage of things to do, from walking tours to sightseeing cruises to visiting the South Carolina Aquarium. History buffs can explore the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, while shoppers can browse the city’s boutiques, antique shops and clothing stores.
• Book your venue and local vendors as early as possible. Both in- and outof-state couples flock to Charleston, and with its stellar reputation as a top vacation destination, demand is high during peak months.
NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA
In New Bern, North Carolina, “streets lined with Spanish moss and 180-degree views of the [Trent and Neuse rivers] create the perfect wedding backdrop,” says Visit New Bern Executive Director Melissa Riggle. Indeed, this coastal town – which was founded in 1710, making it the second-oldest European-settled colonial town in the state – offers a variety of stunning venues.
• Options here range from palatial and grand (Tryon Palace offers a total of 10 distinct event spaces) to historic homes (Amelia Grove, The Jarvis at 220 and The Gardens at Isaac Taylor) to modern waterfront locations large enough to accommodate hundreds (the Riverfront Convention Center of Craven County).
• Your guests will enjoy staying in the historic part of New Bern’s charming downtown, which is filled with cafes and antique shops, while the more modern Five Points neighborhood is home to breweries, galleries and more to explore. Encourage first-time visitors to take a trolley or walking tour, and keep an eye out for life-size fiberglass bears (the city’s mascot) decorated with hats, flags and flowers at various spots around town. Booking a tee time at one of New Bern’s myriad golf courses or arranging a boat outing may be of interest to your guests as well.
• New Bern is also home to Thornbury Brides, one of North Carolina’s premier wedding gown shops. Take a peek at several couture dresses from Thornbury pictured in our fashion editorial, which starts on page 36.
OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA
The Outer Banks is undeniably one of the most scenic and naturally beautiful parts of our state. This strip of islands boasts hundreds of miles of pristine beaches, plus resorts, historic mansions, waterfront restaurants and more. These are a few key details to keep in mind if you’re looking to host a wedding here:
• Use the Outer Banks Wedding Association as your go-to resource for planning an event in this region. We recommend attending its annual Wedding Weekend & Expo, which features dozens of coastal wedding vendors and venues.
• Yes, hurricane season is a legitimate factor to consider, but don’t let the possibility of a storm discourage you from tying the knot on the coast. Be sure to purchase insurance and have a backup plan in place in case bad weather threatens your big day.
• We recommend avoiding scheduling your wedding on the beach during the height of summer for a couple reasons. First, this is peak tourist season, which means guests will have to contend with increased traffic and higher prices for accommodations. Plus, the heat can be uncomfortable for outdoor ceremonies in formal attire.
• Tides change day-to-day and from one season to the next. Account for this when selecting your ceremony site or tent location, and know that it may need adjusting closer to the wedding date.
• Finally, be aware that coastal weather can be unpredictable. Winds may require you to weigh down linens and anchor floral arrangements with sand, rocks or ceramics. Sunscreen and bug spray are essentials to have on hand to ensure a comfortable celebration!
A magnificent 130 mile string of barrier islands, the Outer Banks is a place a breathtaking natural beauty, charming seaside towns, and endless possibilities. Plan your wedding with us! Learn more at obxwa.com.
WeddingUnveiledWisdom,
We chat with a 2024 bride who shares key takeaways from her journey down the aisle
Did you have a good idea of what kind of event you wanted to host when you got engaged?
We knew that we wanted to plan an intimate event for close friends and family – something more than just one day, so that everyone could really get to know one another! Our biggest hurdle was choosing a location. We are adventurous and have many places that mean so much to us, so once we decided on Key West, Florida, it was much smoother sailing – pun intended!
As someone with experience in event planning and the wedding industry, did you feel confident taking on the planning?
I felt confident [with] the order of vendors to reach out to and in managing them leading up to the wedding. I also love design! Hiring a planner to do purely event management (but who was always on call to help!) kept me from ever feeling too stressed.
What were you surprised by?
I was surprised by how time-consuming [wedding planning is]! There’s lots of second-guessing, but that’s why having a great planner who will be there to calm those thoughts is so worth the money.
If you could turn back time, is there anything you’d do differently?
If I could go back, I don’t think I’d change anything, because it all led to the beautiful wedding we had – except using time more wisely, since we planned it in six months!
Dana Statkun-Howley is a wedding planner and coordinator with Events by Emily, an event planning company based in the Triangle. She previously worked as an account executive for Heart of NC Weddings and, prior to that, as an event sales manager for 21c Museum Hotel and lead event planner for The Catering Company. Dana married Chard Howley on Feb. 11, 2024, aboard the Argo Navis catamaran in Key West, Florida. The couple met on their first day of college at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and began dating a few years later.
How did you make your wedding day a reflection of you and your partner? What choices did you make to incorporate your personalities, your values or your histories in the day?
Chard has been going to the Keys with his family for 20 years, so it’s a special place for them, and over the years we made so many amazing memories there. Every choice we made, from location (at sea!) to the thought put into [our guest list] all felt very right to us, and we were not afraid to make it our own and go against tradition. As a planner, I love the little details, but once we did a sunset sail in 2023, we knew we wanted to put our money toward that experience so our guests could enjoy that all together!
What choices were you happiest with in the end?
That we planned three days of events. Friday was the bachelor/bachelorette party, Saturday we had our welcome reception, then Sunday was the wedding. It really [made space for] our guests to get to know one another, to enjoy vacation and have downtime. I loved the way that the day flowed, from the boat to the trolley to the reception and after-party drinks.
Were there any traditions that were important for you to include or that you sought to modernize?
We did a first look with private vows. We decided to keep those vows between us and asked my sister to recite a poem during the ceremony.
What special steps did you take to help your guests plan their travel and feel comfortable navigating an unfamiliar area?
We had cute welcome bags delivered to everyone’s hotels/vacation rentals that contained a print-out I’d created of all our favorite places to eat, drink, shop and visit on the island. I went a little crazy and sent everyone a Canva link with examples for what to wear to each event as well – worth it!
