LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT DEAR FRIENDS,
I
t is with tremendous pleasure and satisfaction that I welcome you to the 20th Anniversary of the North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival at the Carolina Theatre. In this year of major strides in equal rights and major changes to Durham’s landscape, this anniversary offers us an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come, and to consider what the future may hold. I recently had the opportunity to look back on the news reports from when this festival began in the mid-’90s, when government officials previewed films to determine their suitability to be shown in a cityowned venue. There were those who protested the festival’s creation as a “moral issue, a family issue.” While I don’t begin to believe those sentiments have faded for many, I believe that the visibility of our community through events like NCGLFF has helped, over time, to change minds, to win hearts and to help us all become more respected and accepted members of our community, wherever that may be. I can’t let this anniversary pass without acknowledging the volunteers who, for two decades, have screened thousands of films, hosted events,
8 T H E C A R O L I N A T H E AT R E
welcomed our guests and given their time and their passion to make this festival so beloved. I also want to thank our donors and sponsors, who have so generously supported this festival for so long, ensuring that it continues to be a successful effort of our nonprofit. Finally, to the staff who have worked so hard behind the scenes for so long — particularly Jim Carl, the Carolina Theatre’s Senior Director. Jim has been part of the process of every one of these 20 festivals, and his coordination of films and filmmakers is what allows the rest of us to enjoy this remarkable event. This year’s selection process was an epic task. For its 20th anniversary, NCGLFF will include 150 unique films, including a record 40 features. Over nine days, we’ll present 118 screenings. Friends often ask, “What should I see?” I don’t participate in the selection process, so the films are often as new to me as they are to you. It helps me enjoy the festival just as one of our guests would. But I can tell you what I’m looking forward to, based on previews or what I’ve read, or the inside scoop I’ve been given.
Upstairs Inferno, the documentary about the 1973 arson fire that killed 32 patrons at a New Orleans gay bar, looks to be an incredibly powerful reminder of the danger and tragedy that so many experienced in the past. We’re extremely fortunate to have a special screening of I Am Michael, the new James Franco feature that tells the story of gay activist Michael Glatze, who renounced his homosexuality. In Drag Becomes Him, acclaimed Seattle drag performer Jinx Monsoon becomes a national star on RuPaul’s Drag Race. And Tab Hunter Confidential reaches back into the 1950s closet to share the story of the heartthrob’s secret life. We’ve put together an incredible festival to celebrate the past 20 years, and I hope you truly enjoy it. I thank you all for your support for two decades, and I look forward to many more. Regards,
Bob Nocek, President/CEO Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.
LETTER FROM THE SENIOR DIRECTOR DEAR FRIENDS,
T
his was supposed to be a temporary job. A few months — they told me — just until we find somebody else, they said. Liars, all of them. That was the spring of 1996. For 20 years, I’ve been awaiting relief. Here’s what happened: The guy who was supposed to run this festival took a job in South America two months before the first-ever NCGLFF. The higher-ups asked me to step in, thinking I had some idea of what my old boss had planned. I had no idea what he’d planned. I’d never been to a film festival. The last slightly-queer film I’d seen in a theatre was Psycho III. Luckily, none of this mattered at the Carolina Theatre in 1996. Nobody else had ever been to a film festival, so I didn’t have to worry about a lack of experience. Producing a festival is hard work. Who figured it would be such hard work? Somebody handed me a stack of movies, pointed toward a telephone, and said, “Start calling filmmakers, kid. Book something.” Book what? I knew nothing about producing a festival; nothing about how it should be put together, and there is no training program for that —
not at a local theatre and not at a university. I learned that, in festivals, you did what a movie producer did, and then you did things a movie producer didn’t. The producer doesn’t have to care about projectors and playback devices, or the lack of them. He doesn’t worry about protestors, film scratches or power outages. You are supposed to be there when festivals suddenly go dark, because although staff can evacuate audiences from the building, they can’t stop CEOs from climbing onto roofs to make public speeches and maybe fall to their deaths. Also, the producer doesn’t have to mess with booking equal numbers of gay films to lesbian films; trying not to speak about transsexual when the movie is about transgender, or jotting down tracking numbers for 70-pound packages being shipped to Kyrgyzstan, wherever that is. All the producer has to do is everything necessary to make sure the film gets made, and then submit it to a festival. Somewhere along the way, things began to make sense, bit-by-bit. It was not love at first sight. I remember interviewers asking
me — and not quite gently — why North Carolina needed a gay and lesbian film festival. I remember the first time I threatened to yank a film because the director was making a spectacle of himself. Over time, I learned to have no fear about speaking to audiences. Making a fool of myself in front of a large group of people, rather than one at a time, which is normal, has become commonplace. When you’re doing something you want to do, then and only then does your work become believable. So, it’s 2015 and NCGLFF is one of the most-respected LGBT fests in the country. I never expected to still be here. Amazement does not do justice to this moment. I have the best temp job ever. Does North Carolina still need a gay and lesbian film festival? More than ever.
Jim Carl, Senior Director Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.

NCGLFF SPECIAL EVENT
5 LESBIANS EATING A QUICHE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19: 7:30 P.M. | FLETCHER HALL TICKETS: $15; INCLUDED AS 10-PASS OPTION
It’s 1956 and the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein are having their annual quiche breakfast. Will they be able to keep their cool when Communists threaten their idyllic town?... Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood’s outrageous new comedy, 5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche, received its Triangle premiere this summer when Tiny Engine Theatre Company performed the show at Common Ground Theatre in late July. Director Paul Sapp and a cast featuring Noelle Azarelo, Erica Heilmann, Liz Webb, Laurel Ullman and Pimpila Violette will reprise their roles when Common Ground Theatre and the N.C. Gay + Lesbian Film Festival present this uproarious comedy on the stage of the Carolina Theatre’s historic Fletcher Hall during the 2015 NCGLFF. “Its raw and magnetic dementia seems destined to attract a cult following.” –The New York Times FOR MORE INFORMATION:

THE DIRECTOR’S CUT
(US, 106 MIN; CATEGORY: MEN’S)
Studio 54! In 1998, director Mark Christopher created a cinematic monument to this ostentatious mixture of Art Deco and plush, frivolous 1970s hedonism and drug-induced 24-hour party people. Prior to its release, the studio made the film more “mainstream” by eliminating all the things that would have made it great. 54: The Director’s Cut is a reintegrated version that is weightier, darker, more drug-addled and, above all, queerer than the version that received the nod at the time. Ryan Phillippe, Neve Campbell, Salma Hayek and Mike Myers shine like the ’70s. AUGUST 14 AUGUST 16

THOSE PEOPLE (US, 89 MIN; MEN’S)
Budding artist Charlie is so hung up on handsome, vain BFF Sebastian that when asked to paint a self-portrait, he can only deliver yet another painting of his friend. In the wake of a scandal that envelops Sebastian after his father goes to jail, Charlie moves into Sebastian’s luxurious Manhattan apartment, the perfect setup for getting closer to the object of his affection. But Sebastian is like a mirage, always just out of reach; so when Charlie meets Tim, a Lebanese concert pianist, Charlie is intrigued as well as attracted. TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL (US, 90 MIN; MEN’S)
America was a very different place in the not-so-distant, golly-gee past of the 1950s, as vibrantly recalled in this thoroughly entertaining new documentary on formerly closeted Hollywood heartthrob and golden-boy idol Tab Hunter. His stunning blue-eyed, blond-haired California surfer looks got him cast in frequently shirtless roles that propelled his career into superstar status. Hunter became the prototype for future young idols; so did the studios’ desire to hide his and others’ gayness. AUGUST 14 AUGUST 19

UPSTAIRS INFERNO (US, 100 MIN; EVERYONE)
On June 24, 1973, a gay bar in New Orleans called the Up Stairs Lounge was deliberately set on fire, resulting in the largest gay mass murder in U.S. history. Despite the staggering historical significance, few people know about the tragedy. Thirty-two people were killed and some bodies were never identified. No one was ever charged with the crime. The devastation was compounded by the homophobic reactions and utter lack of concern by the general public, government and religious leaders. This documentary brings humanity into the headlines by shining a light into the very painful effect the tragedy had on survivors, witnesses and loved ones. Some of the people interviewed have never publicly discussed the fire until now. Featuring 20 powerful interviews, Upstairs Inferno is different than any other project the public has ever seen about the fire. AUGUST 22

Brink details the horrific aftermath of a vicious homophobic attack on a young man. . . . Sixteen year-old Noam auditions for a school play despite his parents’ disapproval. From the moment he steps onto the stage, he falls in love with Shay, who is also competing for the main role. . . . Winning Dad is the story of a young man who tricks his homophobic father into a camping trip with his secret boyfriend. Colby’s dad knows his son is gay, but he doesn’t like talking about it. He respects it, but ignores everything about that aspect of his son’s life. He doesn’t even know about Colby’s long-term boyfriend, Rusty. Increasingly committed to Rusty, Colby hatches a plan to trick his father into camping with Rusty under the pretense that Rusty is his straight friend and future business partner. Colby is convinced that, given the chance, his father and his boyfriend will get along great. AUGUST 15 AUGUST 20
(US, 1939, 101 MIN; EVERYONE)
An intriguing mix of horror and romantic comedy, You’re Killing Me demonstrates what happens when narcissistic, wannabe Internet star George meets Joe, a monotone serial killer. George catches Joe’s attention, and they immediately begin dating. While all of George’s friends agree that Joe seems a bit strange, George claims his new beau “isn’t scary, he’s gorgeous.” As George’s friends start to disappear, the remaining group takes matters into their own hands. Directed and co-written by Jim Hansen (creator of The Chloe Videos with Drew Droege), this gay mixture of Dexter and Gilmore Girls blends witty banter, pop culture references and good old-fashioned gore. You’re Killing Me will have you laughing hysterically as you cover your eyes in fear. AUGUST 15 AUGUST 22

NCGLFF HISTORY 1995-2015
The Carolina Theatre is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival. Over the past 20 years, the event has featured many memorable moments:
1996 THE INAUGURAL NCGLFF
1996 HAMMER TIME
Current Theatre Senior Director Jim Carl stepped in to run the inaugural NCGLFF in August of 1996. Just eight films were selected for the three-day event. Carl kept an event program – complete with his notes – from that first festival. The onepage publication now has a permanent home inside the historic museum in the theatre’s lobby.
It didn’t take long for the fledgling NCGLFF to encounter its first glitch. “We had projection problems all of that first weekend,” Carl said. “Some of our projection equipment for the 16 and 8mm films was ancient, and we had film breaks and sound issues.” For the first screening of the opening night of the first festival, filmmaker Barbara Hammer screened her Nitrate Kisses for a sizable crowd inside the theatre’s majestic Fletcher Hall. Nearly right after the film started, the sound went out and the staff had to stop the show. “(Hammer) jumped up on stage and talked with the audience, telling them what they would have seen and answering questions,” Carl said.
1995 Q FILM FEST
1997-1998 WE’LL DO IT LIVE
2000 PROTESTS WANE
Before there was a North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival, there was the Q Film Fest. When the annual NC Pride Parade came to Durham in 1995, event organizers asked theatre management to screen gay and lesbian films in conjunction with the Pride march. The theatre agreed, but not everyone was pleased about the event: Some community members felt the content of the films might not be appropriate for all audiences. The protests led to government officials pre-screening the films – and finding nothing objectionable. The ensuing screenings during the Pride event were so successful that the theatre decided to hold an annual gay and lesbian film festival.
By the late ’90s, the theatre added live events into the NCGLFF programming. In addition to the numerous film screenings planned for each NCGLFF, comedians, entertainers and artists like Margaret Cho, Rue McClanahan, Carolina Rhea, Bruce Vilanch, Kathy Griffin and others have appeared in conjunction with the festival.
Protests were a regular occurrence through the NCGLFF’s first few years, as Jim Carl told Audnews.com last year: “I remember in ’96, ’97, ’98 we had protesters on the plaza,” Carl said. “A year or two later, we joked that we needed to recruit some protestors, because the media didn’t want to cover the event anymore unless there was some conflict.”

2001 ATTENDANCE BOOM
2006 NIGHT OF THE HUNTER
2015 NCGLFF AT 20
The sixth edition of the NCGLFF showed a dramatic increase in film screenings and tickets sold. According to theatre records, screenings more than doubled, going from 25 in 2000 to 66 in 2001, while ticket sales increased from 4,450 to 6,600 year-over-year. “It was a dramatic increase,” NCGLFF Men’s Programming Committee Chair Chuck Wheeler said. “We knew then we had arrived as a festival.”
Former matinee idol Tab Hunter appeared at the NCGLFF in 2006, just a year after his memoir Tab Hunter Confidential allowed him to come out after decades of living a double life. Hunter’s screening of Lust in the Dust, the 1985 film in which he co-starred with Divine, remains a highlight for many longtime attendees of the festival.
With more than two decades of hard work, the North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival has become a signature event for the Carolina Theatre and the City of Durham. As thousands of guests once again descend on downtown this August, they will find an event, venue and city all in bloom – and well into a renaissance that is the envy of festivals, theaters and neighborhoods across the country.
2002 HEDWIG FILLS THE HOUSE
2010-2012 PARTIES, BRUNCHES & MORE
Carl and Wheeler both noted a screening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2002 as the single-largest crowd for any screening in the history of the festival.
As the NCGLFF expanded, other events were added to foster a sense of community among the attendees, volunteers and staff. For the 15th Anniversary in 2010, a VIP Reception and Plaza Party respectively added networking and dancing fun to the event. In 2012, the addition of a Filmmakers’ Brunch allowed some of the talented artists who made the trip to Durham a chance to chat about their craft. “Filmmakers from all over the country – Los Angeles, New York City, everywhere – can’t believe how beautiful the theatre is,” Chuck Wheeler said. “We often hear at the conclusion of the festival: ‘We’ve attended many festivals, but this one is the best.’”
