Long gone are the days of going to the arcade to hang out. I used to take a good chunk of the five dollar allowance my parents gave me every week with me down to the arcade down the road to play video games with my friends. We would spend hours there every Saturday afternoon playing our favorite racing games, fighters and just hanging out.
Around the time I went away to college, I saw a bunch of the local video arcades heading out of town as well, including the neighborhood arcade I grew up with. While the realization that times were changing hit me a little hard, I figured that there would still be ways to enjoy at least the sentimental value of playing those old games again.
Just out of curiosity, I went to an auction site to see what one of these machines was selling for. Much to my disappointment, I found that many of these old arcade machines went for thousands of dollars. Not only were these things not affordable for the average person, but there’s no way my wife would also something that big and clunky into our apartment.
With those plans shattered I began to look elsewhere for my arcade game fix. With another quick search I found that there are plenty of sites out there that offer arcade style games for people to play online for free. I was genuinely excited to get to play my old games again on my PC. After a little more checking I found that these were not really the arcade games I grew up on, but instead cheesy Flash based games that were a weak substitute for the real thing.
I decided just to settle for them anyway and to try to be content. But then, I started noticing that my computer was running very slow and some of my programs were not functioning properly. Long story short, these sites had actually installed dangerous software onto my computer without my knowledge! Needless to say, I was pretty unhappy about that one.
After I got the software removed—I’ll spare you the gory details—I gave this whole arcade game on the computer thing one last effort. This time however, I was able to discover MAME emulators. Finally, what I had been looking for! These programs simulated the arcade game experience right there on my PC! I was even able to find copies of the games that I had grown up playing and saw them on my screen right there in front of my very eyes!
While the emulators were a little difficult to work at first, I found a great front end at Gameex.com that made the whole process a whole lot simpler. All my settings related to video or graphics or anything like that were handled for me and the games look great every time. My third party controller was even supported. I’m pumped! So glad that I get to finally play my arcade games again.
