ulapati Suta completed the narration of the Bhagavata Purana to the monks gathered in the Naimisha forest. As he was about to get up and leave, Shaunaka, the leader of the monks, asked: “We listened to Bhagavata with devotion and are pleased. We need a small clarification. How did the son of sage Mrukandu attain immortality? How did he manage not to perish in the great floods of Pralaya that marked the end of an eon?

It is said that he saw lord Vishnu sleeping in the ocean. Tell us about him.

We are bursting with curiosity.”

Suta was pleased by the entreaties of the monks and sat down to narrate the story.

At this point we digress from Bhagavata Purana to Skanda Purana to get some details of Markandeya‟s life.

HTCC‟s 8th anniversary celebrations started with a banquet and culminated with the devotional program, the Sudarsahanam Homam. The annual banquet, organized under the leadership of Anandhi Upendran, was a

by performing severe austerities. Impessed by his devotion, Lord Shiva granted his wish with a choice: an ordinary child with a long life or an exceptional one with only sixteen years to live.

Mrikandu chose the latter and named the baby boy Markandeya.

Markandeya mastered all that there was to learn as a child. As his sixteenth birth day approached, he sought refuge in lord Shiva by chanting the great mantras.

The lord of death, Yama, also known as Kala, the ever-marching time, arrived at the destined time to take away Markandeya. He found the boy in tight embrace of the Shiva Lingam. Kala swung his noose around the boy which encircled the Lingam.

Lord Shiva, who is beyond space and time instantly conquered Kala and blessed Markandeya with eternal life. Thus Markandeya remained

sixteen while the world around him was subject to the vagaries of evolving time. Now back to Bhagavata Purana and Kulapati Suta. Suta continued: “Markandeya was destined to die at the age of sixteen.

The Lord smiled and vanished. Markandeya searched in vain for the Lord, and as he stayed in his hut at the shore of Pushpabhadra, a big storm came with high winds.

Lightning flashed and the rains came like water from an elephant‟s trunk. The floods enveloped the earth.

As the boy swam in the deluge, he witnessed the Lord sleeping on the leaf of a peepul tree as a baby, sucking his toe. (continued on Page 2)

Medicinal Plant of the Season– Khair Ranjana Sharma Khair

Binomial Name: Senegalia catechu Common Names: Khair, Kachu, Khadir, Katha tree, Cachou, Cutchtree, Black cutch, and Black catechu Parts Used: Heart wood, extract katha, Stems, Bark, and Leaves Khair tree is very useful in the dental problems. It gives relief in dry cough. It is also given in stomatis, Anaemia, Leprosy, Bronchitis, Pruritus, Diarrhoea, Polyuria. Its wood contains catechin, catechutanic acid and tannin. It is used externally for

ulcers, boils and eruption of the skin. The juice of the fresh bark is given in haemoptysis. It is used to treat painful throat and cough.

The pale yellow mucilaginous gum exudes from the tree yield one of the beast substitutes for Khadir-Sar, Lavangadi vati, Chandanadi-vati, and Kutajarishta

true gum arabic. The wood extracts are used for tanning and dying Khaki. Its wood is used as the raw material in the raw industry. Its wood is used in ship building. Its wood is even a food for bees. We see in each of you one or more of the divine qualities that Lord Krishna describes in Chapter 16 of Bhagvad Gita - the quality of fearlessness, steadfastness, truthfulness, purity of heart, charity, self-sacrifice, kindness, modesty, compassion, to name a few. During the past month, we continued the tradition of reciting Akhand Ramayan nonstop for 24 hours at the Mandir in April. Holi celebrations were held at the Mandir. We also saw our members help keep our community clean on the Clean-up Columbia day. We are still working on the summer program offerings. Stay tuned! World– Renowned Bharata Natyam Dancer visits Columbia Meera Chandrasekhar

R

aagas of Columbia organized a Bharata Natyam performance by A. Lakshmanaswamy on Saturday May 17, 2014, cosponsored by Abhinaya of St. Louis. The program was held at Columbia College.

The performance, entitled Tirupathi – the Lord of the Seven Hills, explored the relationship of the devotee with Lord Venkateshwara. The production was thoughtfully worked out and executed by Shri A. Lakshmanaswamy with the guidance of resource person, eminent scholar, Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao. The dances included select pieces in various languages including Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil, Oriya, Sanskrit, and Telugu.

The audience was enthralled by the expert execution and the

deep devotion of the dancer. Although he was the single person on stage, he expertly conveyed many characters in complex stories by small changes in his stance and expression. It was certainly an evening not to be missed.

The dancer, Lakshman, was born in Malaysia, and drew great inspiration to learn and perform Bharatanatyam. Initiated into the art under Guru Smt. Veera Venugopal of Bharatha Kalanjali, Malaysia, and later, moving to Chennai, he came under the direct tutelage of the well renowned and highly acclaimed Guru K. J. Sarasa at “Sarasalaya”. He has also had the opportunity to learn under the greatest stalwarts in the field - Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, Prof. C. V. Chandrashekar and abhinaya exponent Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. He continues his journey into Bharatanatyam as a performer of great repute and a much sought after teacher. He heads “Nrithyalakshana” an institute for classical arts in Chennai where he imparts training in Bharatanatyam in its most authentic and pure form.

Sri Sudarshana Homam Hema Srinivasan

S

udharshana Homam is one of most sacred among all homams and is performed for the wellbeing, peace and prosperity of the community at large. As part of the annual devotional program, for the year 2014, we performed Sri Maha Sudarshana Homam at Shanthi Mandir on April 12, 2014. This is a first for HTCC. Sri Sudharashana Homam was conducted by “Sudharsana Sreeman” Sri. S. V. Iyengar. He is visiting US from India to conduct various such devotional activities. In addition, on Sunday, April 13, he also gave

a lecture on Bhagavad Gita on Sunday and later a lecture on Ramanuja and Panguni Uthiram (which fell on April 13, 2014 this year). Some of the people who attended this lecture also continued these recitations once a week for the next four weeks. “ Sudarshanam” is the name of the Chakram or Discus of Sri Mahavishnu, which you will see him holding in his hand in many of the pictures. It is always ready to help and protect the devotees of Vishnu. It is worshipped in all temples as a separate deity affectionately called “sudharshanar”. Yoga Corner Ritcha Mehra Chaudhary

T

his time In “Yoga Corner” we will learn about the asana called “Ardha- Purvottanasana” also known as Tabletop, Crab, or Half Reverse Plank.

This asana is a variation of “Purvottanasana” and is more suitable for beginners and people with less core and upper body strength.

The Sanskrit word “Ardh” means half; “Purva” means east and “Uttana” means “intense stretch”.

The ancient yogis considered the front side of the body the "east" side since they practiced yoga facing the sun as it rose from the east. Therefore “Ardha- Purvottanasana” literally means "Half Intense East Stretch” as it stretches the entire "east" side of the body.

Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you. Keep your arms resting at your sides 2 Bend the knees and place the feet flat on the floor 3 Place the hands several inches behind your hips. Keep them shoulder-width apart 4 Keep the palms flat, facing downward and point the fingertips towards your toes.

5 Press firmly down with your hands and feet.

Straighten your elbows, and lift your hips up toward the ceiling. Important: Only lift your hips as high as your body allows. Never force the pose 6 Draw your shoulder blades firmly into your back and lift your chest. Try to bring your chest, torso, and knees into one straight line, parallel to the floor 7 Keep your thighs engaged throughout the pose. Keep the legs firm but do not squeeze your buttocks. Distribute the weight evenly on all ten toes. Do not roll to the outer edges of your feet 8 Keep your arms straight and fully engaged 9 If you are comfortable here, then slowly drop your head back so the crown of your head faces the floor 10 Hold for 5-10 breaths.

You can start by holding onto the edges of the chair seat and then lift into the pose Breathing-rhythm: Relaxed controlled breathing Benefits: 1. 2. It helps strengthen the core and abdomen muscles.

3. It helps strengthen the back and the muscles surrounding the spine.

4. It helps strengthen the muscles of the wrists, arms, buttocks and legs.

5. It improves the balance and posture.

6. It provides a great counter balance to forward bending activities.

Caution: 1. Always work within your own range of limits and abilities. Do not over do.

Homam and ended with Mahapurnahudhi at 12 noon. Every one participated in the Chakra Sananm, and theerthabhishekam to Sri Sudharsahna Swami or Chakkrathazwar and the Aarti. It was followed by Maha Prasadam.

Shreemad Bhagavad Gita – Part 24 Saroj Mohan

W

e have learned that a Pathbhrashtah yogi is a seeker who has failed while on the path of spiritual practices but he is never destroyed. We will understand what happens to such a seeker, in the following verses.

In the 41st verse Shri Krishna says, “He who has fallen on this path, attains Swarga or the righteous places, dwells a long time and then he is born in a rich, pure, holy and religious family” The life hereafter depends on the life spent in this world now. Those who have performed their duties, unselfishly and with devotion in their hearts, are born in noble and righteous families, where they live in contentment and comfort continuing their Saadhna. Those, who have performed their duties well but with the desire for the fruits of their actions, also go to Swarga or heaven and live for a long time enjoying the fruits of their actions till they get exhausted.

Continuing in the 42nd verse, Shri Krishna says, “Those performing their duties unselfishly also are born in the Yoginamikule, in the family of yogis or wise men. Indeed this kind of fortunate birth is very rare in this world O Kurunandan or the one who delighted the family of Kurus.”

There is the example of Sukhdevji the son of Maharishi VedVyas, who was born as a yogi, but this kind of fortunate birth in this world is very rare indeed.

In the 43rd verse Shri Krishna continues, “There he attains and acquires all the knowledge of his past life, and strives more easily to attain the Parmaatma, the Self, successfully.”

It may seem unbelievable but in the realm of cause and effect this is a wonderful happening. Such a fortunate and wise, but fallen yogi acquires all the knowledge of former lifetime easily and strives ahead more successfully towards self- realization.

Shri Krishna again explains in the 44th verse, the state of the yoga- bhrashatah or fallen yogis, who are born in rich, noble, pure and righteous families as well as those who have done good spiritual practices according to the prescribed duties of Vedas.

Shri Krishna says, “Those fallen yogis who are born in righteous, rich families they too, due to the spiritual practices in their former life, in spite of themselves, feel attracted and move towards Godrealization. Even the Sambudhi Jeegyasu, or an individual with an equal vision for all and eager to know the Reality or the Self, who has done good deeds without a desire for the fruits of his actions, goes beyond the Shabda Brahman or Vedas, and strives for the Lord.”

Whosoever has done good and righteous spiritual practices according to the duties prescribed by the Vedas or the one who strives for blissful, peaceful self–realization,

experience of the Self or Parmaatma instantly. Such a yogi is purified from the sins of all past lifetimes. He attains the highest state or Parmamgatim.

Shri Krishna praises the highest state of the yogi and commands Arjuna to be a yogi, in the 46th verse.

Shri Krishna says, “A yogi is greater and superior to a Tapaswi or an ascetic, superior to Gyanis or men of knowledge, mere scholars, Karmebhay, Sakam karmam\karta, or men of action, (workers doing their actions with a desire for the fruits of their actions). Therefore, O Arjuna, be a yogi.”

In this verse, popular spiritual practices are not being run down. This yoga is declared as superior for a reason. Clearly, only being an ascetic, or a man doing Tapasya with thoughtless self-denial, like fasting, not sleeping, standing on one leg etc. are useless; this should be done with full understanding. The yogi is superior to being a mere scholar who just keeps reading the scripture, give lectures on them endlessly without really understanding the full purpose and meaning of it all. Only, working unselfishly and without the desire for the fruits of such actions; working for the welfare of all is Karmayoga.
