Situated in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the Classroom of the Future is one of a series of pilot projects commissioned by the DFEs that explore the future design of educational buildings. Through its striking and innovative form and variety of materials, it seeks to engage and inspire the children. Elements such as the stair and lift are boldly described and break up the volume of the biosphere to create a series of semi private spaces. Various materials are placed against each other to describe a variety of textures and colours. The route to the classroom winds up through plants, telescopes and within the clear skin of the ETFE cushions. Dividing the curved geometries of the biosphere and teaching pod is the jagged geometry and form of the experiment zone over which the telescope and astronomy dome sit. The classroom is lined with curved timber.
