Listed Buildings Shape Architecture has a wide experience of extending and re-working listed houses. From the elegant apartment created over the Hansom Cab pub in Kensington to the contemporary addition to Grade 2 listed Rickham House in Bray. We have also undertaken smaller projects to Grade 2 listed properties such as new sliding glazed doors and landscaping at Linum Cottage also in Bray and a small rear extension and internal remodelling at Inverness Terrace in Bayswater. Common to each project is the improvement of light and space and the play between the existing and the new structures, each drawing benefit from the other. Allied to a greater openness onto garden spaces and the exchange of views between.

Hansom Cab Kensington, London
The Hansom Cab is a Grade 2 listed public house in the London borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Our project has seen its conversion into a luxury apartment and the provision of additional accommodation to the public house. A new brickwork structure was built out over the existing flat roof to extend the pub’s accommodation and also to allow trading to continue. A new internal entrance was formed to access the flat. The internal layout has been re-worked with much care to create an elegant apartment. All work being carried out in liaison with the listed buildings officer.

Linum Cottage Bray, Berkshire
Linum Cottage is a Grade two listed house in Bray. Shape Architecture, having been recommended by other clients in the village of Bray, obtained planning permission for the insertion of large sliding folding doors into the existing faรงade and a landscaped garden area. Alongside further changes to the interior this has opened the space up onto the garden.

“Shape Architecture opened our eyes to a number of new ideas, beyond (but importantly including) our original brief, which we are very pleased and excited about. Introducing contemporary elements into a Grade II listed building isn’t always easy, but the listed building consent was granted without a hitch and we already have a start date in the diary. We can highly recommend Shape Architecture - even though ours was probably one of the smaller projects in their portfolio, it was treated with the same respect and professionalism as larger contracts, which wasn’t the case with other architects we approached.” Louisa and Steve Yeoman, Client
