St. Francis Xavier ARCHITECT’S SUBMISSION
In this submittal Shape Architecture has looked at the creative opportunities offered by the redevelopment of classrooms in the Xavier building. Our proposal concerns a limited intervention that addresses the key issue of space, light and views between the classroom and the corridor. The proposal is itself simple, adaptable, expandable and repeatable. It is by virtue of this careful approach that the proposal can react to budget constraints and site issues. We suggest a series of developed glazed slots in the vertical and horizontal planes along the length of the corridor. A rhythm of changing views, light and sunlight, with a sense of space and a connection between Corridor, Classroom and Courtyard. IN FORM The glazed slots are a simple form in contrast to the fine detail of the existing windows whose pattern they project into the corridor. They can be located in existing door openings no longer required or in newly formed openings. They could provide light into the rear of the ground floor classrooms with a simple adaption to the ground floor storage zone. IN DETAIL The glazed slots will bring daylight and sunlight through the classrooms and into the corridor. They will provide a feeling space, light and views and connect the peripheral corridor to the heart of the school. The number, location and size can be varied. The surface effects can be varied from a semi opaque surface to the simple addition of polychromatic film to bring the colour spectrum played on the corridor wall. Rhythm can be explored through spacing and also varying the angle of the vertical section. An integrated design approach would see the glazed slots as cues for added colour, signage and artificial light. A vertical section to each side of the glazed slot can house LED lights that shine brighter as the level of natural daylight diminishes.
