BorninTokyoin1937,LarryPoonsfirsttrainedattheNewEngland ConservatoryofMusic,beforeattendingtheSchooloftheMuseumof FineArtsinBoston.HeundertookhisfirstsoloshowinNewYorkatthe famousGreenGalleryin1963,andin1965hisworkwasincludedin MoMA’seradefiningexhibitionTheResponsiveEy
Ourexhibitiontakesthevisitoronajourneythroughthreedecades, watchingthedevelopmentofPoons’stylefromthe1970swhentheartist startedmovingawayfromgeometricabstractimageryonmonochrome backgroundstowardsthefreerstyleofpaintingforwhichheis recognizedtoday.WebeginwithwhatthecriticMichaelFriedcalled ‘theelephantskinned’paintings,theirsomberpalletandheavyfeel achievedwiththickimpastobuiltupwithfoamandrubberobjects,the paintpouredonthecanvas.Thesegivewaytothechaoticcolourand formofthelate'90s,whenPoonssplashedandpouredthepaintonto therollofcanvas,beforecroppingtheimagetorevealthefinished composition.Finally,intheearly2000sweseeworksofthinlylayered paintwithglimpsesofquietcanvaspeepingoutfromthevividcolour applieduncharacteristically withapaintbrush.
Poons’workisincludedinmajorcollectionsworldwideincludingthe MetropolitanMuseumofArt;LACMA;theArtInstitute;thePhiladelphia MuseumofArt;andtheTate.
