INTENT This portfolio is a glimpse of my short yet compelling journey through architecture while pursuing MS in Pratt Institute, New York and undergraduate course at Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies, Mumbai (K.R.V.I.A.) and professional working experience in and around Mumbai. Over the past six years of formal architectural training and subsequently working in offices , my perception of architecture and life has undergone a dramatic shift. Architecture for me, is not about physical spatial demarcation but a method of questioning and reinterpreting reality through a continuous process of learning and un-learning .It is a tool to tackle socio-politicaleconomical condition at the same time. At K.R.V.I.A. I was constantly involved in projects that dealt with incremental scales of design in both urban and rural contexts. The studios involved synthesis between the built and unbuilt , landscapes and structural systems. The design ideas were supplemented by strong background research at all stages. At Pratt Institute, I took this understanding forward with experimentation with digital media, amalgamating new avenues of interdisciplinary learning with core design. The projects are a conscious effort to address an urban idea with architectural intervention. This book is a brief attempt at exhibiting this entire process of architectural learning through selected projects which have greatly impacted in realigning my role and approach as a designer of built environment with a fresh and seemingly better attitude every time. -sharan suresh babu

The proposed design is a multipurpose surface, which deals with the ideas of human form, enclosure, as well as the filtration of light and air .The segmented aluminium panels are strategically creased and cut to allow the manipulation of each individual panel. This designed flexibility provides the opportunity for variation across all panels. The singular panel design, with its variation of openings, allows for desirable lighting conditions within the installation while simultaneously serves as an interactive vertical wall. The faceted wall reaches upward and outward to extend overhead and become both vertical and over head enclosure of the space. The panel system is designed to enable for various static human postures , areas are created which encourage human relaxation, whether in a leaning or seated position. Certain areas of the surface create a moment of pause for the patrons, allowing for variation in mobility while experience the space. Users are more likely to leisurely travel through and contemplate the material and spatial composition developed through the folds. Thus, the material becomes less of a surface and more of a usable experiential space. The location of the installation, directly adjacent to the translucent glass panels of the gallery, lends itself to the utilization of the natural light, which pours in from above. The light is wielded in such a way that a sense of directionality is achieved, guiding the patron through the installation in a methodic fashion. The light filtration also enhances the experience of the “pause-points of patron relaxation.

ater and Culture | The New Brooklyn Waterfront Museum . Studio Critic : Henry Smith Miller and Michael Licht Project type: Parametic skn | Cultural | Public | 2013 New York City is in a continuous cultural flux since its genesis, and art forms have always been a medium of showcasing the cultural phenomenon of that time period. A contemporary art museum is an suitable intervention in a deteriorated neighborhood to be a stimuli of growth and reflecting the ambitions and aspirations of a society. The effort is to erode the boundaries of a thought that makes a museum a sacred box. Taking in to consideration its location and proximity with a highly volatile elements of water, wind and sun which has very strong characteristics of erosion and testing the elements in its path. ATER : Wetland Aquatic Theatre : Education And Recreation Studio Critic : Philip Parker, Chirs Kroner & Hart Marlow Project type: Academic | Experimental Design | Public | 2013 The edge between land and water is crumbled , allowing for the mutual permeability and exchange of qualities and new set of intractable symbiotic relationship ,which never existed in the previous scenarios. The Surface reacts to underlaying intense scenarios on the site . The different phases of the changing surfaces enabled me to identify similar and dissimilar qualities of spaces seen In , Along and Through the surface. These are few of the identified qualities: zones of accumulation , convergence and intermittent. Zones of exposure ,display and Lines of river water in motion agility, zones of recreation and traverse, zones of interlock etc.

Design Team: SBP Architects and Planners. Project type: Residential | Vernacular | Traditional| 2013 Traditional villa in kerala is in the outskirts of the city .The spaces have been inspired by certain traditional keralite houses called ‘naalu kettu’, meaning the four parts house with a courtyard in the centre circumscribed by a passage connecting all the major spaces of the house. Thus the design provides for adequate natural lighting and efficient ventilation system.

XPERIMENTAL HOUSING PROTOTYPE : HYBRID LIVING IN MUMBAI Studio Critic : Nemish Shah Project type: Academic | Thesis | Individual | 2011 The study was aimed at understanding the evolution and change in configuration of housing typologies in Mumbai. The various international and national case studies of mass group housing revealed the various possibilities of liveable spaces under their own unique context. The design for a mixed density housing catering to the working class population was proposed based on the inferences of these analytical case studies and study of living and site conditions of people residing in Mumbai. The proposal intended to create a comfortable living module of public housing through the collection of people’s aspirations and the understanding of evolution of housing in the city.

Anju Chaya Project type: Airport | Public Landscape | Individual |2010 The intent of the project was to design an international airport, along with domestic facilities for the city of Aurangabad bearing in mind the historical, social and cultural context of the city. The proposed design aimed at making the airport more accessible and a public space with necessary security measures. The proposal tries to satisfy the programatic functioning of an airport but also tries to understand how a bird prepares to launch it self into flight and how an airport can signify this act of launching . Simultaneously giving the people of the city a platform to view this action and relate to this new civic facility.

loped Terraces : Neighborhood Resource Centre, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Studio Critic : Quaid Doongerwala Project type: Public | Cultural | Individual | 2010 The project was developed after a study of the inner city of Dehradhun. It was located at the junction of the main highway of the city with one of the busiest market streets. The project provided for public amenities like a bank, local goods shop, post office, ward office, trade union office along with the primary programme of a library. The dense uban frabric dectates the formal actions on the built enviorment , and the use of locally availbale textures and material forms the important aspect of the project. The need for porus accesibility and climatic study carves the site like a monolithic block as if the building emerged from the ground .

ree Spirit : Progressive Artist Museum, Nariman point,Mumbai. Studio Critic : Pinkish Shah Project type: Mixed use | Cultural | Museum| Individual | 2009 The project was to design a Museum to house the work of artists after studying the Progressive Artists Group of Bombay. The site chosen was the National Centre For Performing Arts, on the sea front and hence becomes a part of the pedestrian plaza between the proposed and NCPA. The idea was to break the traditional notion of museum and make it. accessible to general public in a direct and an indirect medium. The design exemplifies the free spirit of the progressive artist movement. The idea is of the three threads of circulation space found on site ,which glides, floata, intertwine and knot within it self in the beezy enviorment forming an intricate network of intense performance.
