LOCATION :
THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART HISTORY : In the late 1920s, three progressive and influential patrons of the arts, Miss Lillie P. Bliss, Mrs. Cornelius J. Sullivan, and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., perceived a need to challenge the conservative policies of traditional museums and to establish an institution devoted exclusively to modern art. They, along with additional original trustees A. Conger Goodyear, Paul Sachs, FrankCrowninshield, and Josephine Boardman Crane, created The Museum of Modern Art in 1929. Its founding director, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., intended the Museum to be dedicated to helping people understand and enjoy the visual arts of our time, and that it might provide New York with “the greatest museum of modern art in the world.” THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. MoMA has been important in developing and collecting modernist art, and is often identified as one of the largest and most influential museums of modern art in the world. MoMA's collection offers an overview of modern and contemporary art, including works of architecture and design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books and artist's books, film, and electronic media.. The MoMA Library includes approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs, over 1,000 periodical titles, and over 40,000 files of ephemera about individual artists and groups . The archives holds primary source material related to the history of modern and contemporary art.

What Is an Art Gallery An Art Gallery is a small business that sells the art it exhibits. The profits made from sales will cover the operating costs to run that business, and, in a successful gallery, will also turn a profit. An Art Gallery also has a stable of artists unified by some criteria such as tone or feeling of the artworks; a common background of the artists; or a shared style, technique, medium or similar outlook. Artists typically receive payment for their work when it is purchased, minus a percentage taken by the gallery for representing the artist and showing his or her work You can learn plenty in art galleries. A really good art gallery will have "people-friendly" staffers on hand who can tell you all about the art that you're seeing in addition to some things about the artist.
TYPES OF GALLERY : Art Dealers – These galleries are selling art purchased for on selling; they may also, sell on consignment from collectors and artists..
art gallery: HISTORY OF ART GALLERY B.C. ERA : Wealthy Roman collectors of engraved gems (including Julius Caesar) and other precious objects often donated their collections to temples.
12 A.D : In Europe, from the Late Medieval period onwards, areas in royal palaces, castles, and large country houses of the social elite were often made partially accessible to sections of the public, where art collections could be viewed. The treasuries of cathedrals and large churches, or parts of them, were often set out for public display.
Commercial Galleries – these are for-profit, privately owned businesses dealing in artworks by contemporary artists. Galleries run for the public good by cities, churches, art collectives, not-for-profit organizations, and local or national governments are usually termed Non-Profit Galleries

The British Museum
The Uffizi art Gallery
18T H--19 TH CENTURY : In 1753, the British Museum was established and the Old Royal Library collection of manuscripts and artwork was donated to it for public viewing. In Great Britain, however, the corresponding Royal Collection remained in the private hands of the monarch and the first purpose-built national art galleries were the Dulwich Picture Gallery, founded in 1814 and the National Gallery opened to the public a decade later in 1824.
20TH CENTURY : Works on paper, such as drawings, pastels, watercolors, prints, and photographs are typically not permanently displayed for conservation reasons. Instead, public access to these materials is provided by a dedicated print study room located within the museum. Various forms of 20thcentury art, such as land art and performance art, also usually exist outside a gallery. Sculpture installation has grown in popularity, whereby temporary sculptures are installed in open spaces during events like festivals.
Studio Gallery – Galleries continually exhibiting the work of a single artist with exhibition space attached to the artist‟s studio
Online Galleries – webpages with art for sale, these are not really galleries because there is no interaction, aside from sales, between the gallery and the artist or the gallery with the public.
Co-op Galleries - Co-op galleries are different still. A co-op gallery usually involves a group of artists who work together to show their work, promote the gallery, and sometimes offer community art classes or workshops. Some co-op galleries will even have studio space available for their members to create artwork on site
Vanity Galleries - vanity galleries is that most of them have a reputation as just that - a gallery in which someone has paid to show their work. vanity galleries don‟t promote and develop relationships with artists like reputable commercial galleries do

The lighting challenge faced in today‟s museums and galleries is to achieve a balance between the quality of the lit environment - no matter what is being displayed - and the level of energy used during the life of the installation. The „display lighting mantra‟ detailed here shows the balance that is needed between visibility, interest, preservation and environmental considerations.
